UMass men's basketball looks to bounce back against George Washington
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 2/4/2012
WASHINGTON, D.C. - With the wounds of Wednesday night's loss at Rhode Island still fresh, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will try to put that game behind it when it plays George Washington at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Center.
“It's always tough after a loss in a game you thought you had a chance to win. It was a tough bus trip back,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “I'm not into psychological games, but the quicker you can put a loss behind you and not let it snowball into anything is important. We have to show some resiliency and the ability to bounce back from a pretty tough game.”
The Minutemen (16-6, 5-3 Atlantic 10) have lost two of their last three road games. Kellogg said to stay among the league's better teams they needed to improve away from Amherst.
“The next game is a road game and we have to try to go down to GW and play well,” Kellogg said. “If we play well we'll give ourselves a chance to win. We have to channel our emotions to play a physical, high energy game on Saturday.”
The Colonials (8-15, 3-5) have had an up-and-down season. They opened the year 4-1 but then lost seven straight. They beat Delaware State and lost to Harvard to close nonconference play at 5-9. GW began Atlantic 10 play at 3-2, but has since lost three straight.
The last loss was encouraging however as they were nipped by Xavier 59-58 Wednesday.
The Atlantic 10 is loaded with good point guards this season and George Washington's Tony Taylor is among the better floor generals in the conference. He leads GW in scoring (13.6 points per game) and assists (4.3), while Lasan Kromah is second in scoring (10.7 ppg) and leads GW with 5.7 rebounds per game.
The game pits the league's highest scoring team, UMass (76.8 ppg), against its lowest scoring outfit, George Washington (61.6 ppg). The Colonials will likely try to slow the tempo as GW is fourth in the league in scoring defense, allowing 65.4 ppg.
While the Minutemen struggled on the glass against Rhode Island, the Colonials are among the worst rebounding teams in the league.
Among the keys for UMass figures to be ballhandling. It's averaged 19.8 turnovers in losses, compared to 14.6 in wins. Sophomore point guard Chaz Williams averages 3.19 turnovers per game in wins, compared to 5.3 per game in losses.

Vinson, UMass Shoot Down George Washington, 86-75
UMass shoot a season-high 55.4 percent.
From UMass Athletics, 2/4/2012
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Terrell Vinson scored a career-high 21 points and led a season-high shooting for UMass as the Minutemen basketball team defeated George Washington, 86-75, at the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday night.
With four Minutemen from the D.C. area, it was Vinson, the Baltimore native who had the biggest impact on the Minutemen's play. He shot 8-for-11 and grabbed four boards to lead four players in double figures.
UMass (17-6, 6-3 Atlantic 10) also shot a season-best 55.4 percent in the game and connected on eight 3-pointers The squad also did a nice job taking care of the ball, committing just 11 turnovers - its fourth-lowest total this year.
Chaz Williams had 15 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Freddie Riley and Javorn Farrell came off the bench to score 12 and 11 respectively. Riley joined Williams with a trio of treys.
GW (8-15, 3-6 A-10) was led by Tony Taylor's game-high 26 and five assists. The Colonials shot 43 pct. but saw their bench outscored by the Minutemen's 28-16.
UMass snapped a two-game losing streak to GW and has not lost consecutive games all season, moving to 6-0 following a loss.
UMass took its first lead seven minutes into the contest on a pair of baskets by Javorn Farrell. His 3-pointer with 12:21 left gave the Minutemen a 17-14 lead.
UMass parlayed some hot outside shooting into a 33-19 edge that included five baskets from outside. The run was capped by a Chaz Williams shot-clock beating ball from about 40 feet with 7:48.
GW responded with a 10-0 run which cut the UMass lead to 33-29 before the Minutemen went into the break with a 40-35 advantage.
The Minutemen came out of the intermission with a pair of fast-break dunks to set the tone for the period. The Colonials cut the deficit to four three minutes into the frame but UMass responded with four points to push the margin back to double digits at 51-41. The closest GW got the remainder of the game was six.
UMass finished with a season-high eight dunks for the second-straight game and netted 12 of its 15 second-half field goals on either layups or slams.
The Minutemen will return home from this two game road swing when they play host to St. Bonaventure on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Strong second half by Terrell Vinson leads UMass men's basketball over Colonials
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 2/6/2012
WASHINGTON, D.C. - First-half foul trouble only left University of Massachusetts men's basketball player Terrell Vinson fresh for the second half Saturday.
Vinson was visibly angry when he was called for his second foul with 4 minutes, 35 seconds remaining in the first half. He took that frustration out on George Washington and led the Minutemen to an 86-75 win at the Smith Center.
Vinson had 14 of his 21 points after intermission as he stayed out of second-half foul trouble.
“That was the best he's played in a while,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “When Terrell plays the way he did today we're capable of being a really good team. He's bringing that age and that maturity. He's starting to fulfill the expectations I had for him when he got here.”
The Minutemen (17-6, 6-3 Atlantic 10), who have been inconsistent on the road and have had trouble putting teams away, at least temporarily put both problems behind them Saturday.
“Our guys showed some resiliency and really made plays to finish the game off,” Kellogg said. “I'm really happy. Road wins in the this conference are really hard to get.”
Vinson, a junior from Baltimore native with over 20 friends and family in the building, was glad that he matched his career scoring high close to home. “It felt like I was back at St. Frances” Academy, Vinson said of his high school. “It felt good.”
A 3-pointer by Vinson put UMass ahead 62-50 with 9:25 left but the Colonials used a 10-4 run to stay in the game with 6:59 remaining.
The Minutemen, who have let healthy leads sicken quickly this season, stayed in control by scoring seven of the next nine points capped by a Freddie Riley 3-pointer to bring their lead back to double digits at 73-62. The lead hovered around 10 the rest of the way as UMass had an answer for every uprising by George Washington (8-15, 3-6 Atlantic 10).
The Minutemen host St. Bonaventure at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Mullins Center.
During their pre-game shoot-around, UMass practiced an alley-oop out-of-bounds play from underneath the offensive basket. They used it in the game as Javorn Farrell lofted a perfect lob to Raphiael Putney, who slammed it home.
Farrell contributed 11 points, four assists and two steals, and Riley added 12 points.
Tony Taylor paced the Colonials with a game-high 26 points and five assists.
The Minutemen got a lift in the first half with six 3-pointers, including three by Chaz Williams (15 points) who made one from just in front of half-court as the shot clock wound down.
UMass build a 14-point lead early, but George Washington used a 10-0 run to get back to within 40-35 at halftime.
Minutemen withstand foul trouble for Terrell Vinson, Raphiael Putney
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 2/6/2012
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Foul trouble for Terrell Vinson and Raphiael Putney has spelled trouble for the University of Massachusetts basketball team in recent games.
So when the two Minutemen each picked up two fouls in the second half, there was reason for concern Saturday at George Washington. A similar script led to a disastrous loss at Duquesne in January.
But Javorn Farrell and Freddie Riley both delivered their best performances in a while to give UMass a lift in the first half Saturday, and the Minutemen went on to an 86-75 win.
“Freddie played a very good game tonight and deserved to play more,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “Javorn gave us some very good minutes throughout the game,”
Vinson and especially Putney, who played just four first-half minutes, were rested for the second half and helped the Minutemen pull away. Putney had all eight of his points and seven of his eight rebounds in the second half.
“It let (Putney) rest a little bit and when he's fresh, he's a very good basketball player,” Kellogg said.
Farrell, who is from nearby Woodbridge, Va., finished with 11 points, his first time in double figures since Dec. 22 against Davidson.
“I just tried to play good defense and that got me rolling on offense,” Farrell said. “Normally when my family comes out we lose, so this is good.”
Riley, who had not scored in double digits since Jan. 5 against Fordham, had 12 points. He made three of five 3-point attempts and is seven-for-14 from that range in the last three games, a sign that his recent shooting slump could be behind him.
“If everybody is hitting we're a dangerous team,” Vinson said. “As long as we get defensive rebounds and defensive stops, we're good.”
STANDINGS - The win moved UMass back into a four-way tie for second place in the Atlantic 10 with Saint Louis, La Salle and Xavier at 6-3. Temple is in first at 6-2.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen will play St. Bonaventure at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday The Bonnies, who were idle Saturday, are 12-8 overall and 5-3 in the Atlantic 10.
CROWD - Thirteen years after then-President Bill Clinton saw UMass play the Colonials at the Smith Center, the teams have downgraded in the politician department as Washington, D.C., Mayor Vince Gray, a George Washington alum, was among Saturday's 3,143 fans. … Former Minuteman Will Herndon also was in the crowd. … Jesse Morgan had a career-high seven rebounds.
