+**Derek Kellogg to juggle lineup after Cady Lalanne suspension **\\
+By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 12/4/2012
 +
+AMHERST — With sophomore center Cady Lalanne suspended after being arrested Saturday night, University of Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg was forced to juggle his lineup and game plan for today’s 7 p.m. game against Northeastern at Matthews Arena in Boston.
 +
+Kellogg said he hadn’t decided whether sophomore Maxie Esho or junior Sampson Carter would replace Lalanne in the starting lineup.
 +
+“I think Sampson has done a good job in his minutes. Maxie’s done a great job in his minutes,” Kellogg said. “The reality is I do like Maxie coming off the bench because of his energy, but Sampson’s done some good things. I think we’ll be able to run a little bit more with those lineups.”
 +
+Kellogg said that Lalanne’s absence would mean more time for two freshmen, guard Trey Davis and big man Tyler Bergantino.
 +
+“It’ll give the young guys an opportunity to get some minutes,” Kellogg said. “Trey has earned the opportunity to play. Maybe we’ll go smaller and run a little bit more. Tyler has done some good things in practice. Because of the way the schedule has been laid out I haven’t had the chance to get those guys in. Now I’m being forced to, which might be a good thing down the line.”
 +
+Bergantino said that adapting from high school to college basketball has been an adjustment.
 +
+“Not only physically but mentally. All the running and how hard we go and the speed of the game and recovering,” he said. “I’m getting a little better every day. I still feel I have a long way to go. I didn’t think it would be this hard to adjust, but I’m coming from a slow move-the-ball-around high school to a fast team. It’s a big adjustment. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
 +
+Even before Lalanne’s suspension, Kellogg was hoping for an improved Jesse Morgan. The junior guard has struggled shooting since the Minutemen got back from Puerto Rico.
 +
+“Saturday after the game he came in and shot for an hour by himself. I think he’s committed to being a good shooter,” Kellogg said. “I do think we would have maybe had some different outcomes if he shot the ball a little better in a couple of games.
 +
+“He’s a confident kid,” Kellogg added. “Shooters sometimes shoot themselves out of slumps. I think he’s taken pretty good shots. I’m just waiting for them to go down. Saturday’s 1 for 10 is uncharacteristic for him. If we’re going to go on one of our runs, those are the ones he’s got to make. ... I’m not putting pressure on him to make those shots. Our team needs those baskets to be where we need to be.”
 +
+Morgan was confident the shots will fall soon.
 +
+“I don’t feel like I’m in a shooting slump. I just feel like shots aren’t falling,” Morgan said. “I just needed to get back in the gym and work on the things I’ve been working on. It’s going to come back.”
 +
+The Huskies are 4-3 after dropping their last two games to Charlotte and Maine. They finished second to the 49ers in the Great Alaska Shootout.
 +
+“Northeastern played very well up in Alaska. I think they had some tired legs against Maine (Wednesday) and have had four or five days to get ready for us,” Kellogg said. “It’s a local game against a team that sees UMass as a big game. It’s going to be a tough one, just like Siena was. You’ve got to be ready.”

+**Jesse Morgan's Late Shooting Streaks Men's Hoops Past Northeastern 72-66**\\
+Morgan hits 12 of his 18 points in final seven minutes\\
 +From UMass Athletics, 12/4/2012
 +
+BOSTON - Jesse Morgan scored 12 of his 18 points in the final seven minutes of play as the UMass basketball team overcame a late second-half deficit to defeat Northeastern 72-66 on Tuesday evening at Matthews Arena. After Morgan's fourth three-pointer of the game tied the game 62-62 with just over three minutes to go, the Minutemen received timely baskets from Chaz Williams and Sampson Carter before hitting six consecutive free throws to seal the win.
 +
+The Minutemen improve to 4-3 overall and will be off until hosting Elon on December 15 at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield for the 2012 Holiday Showcase.
 +
+Morgan and Williams each finished with a game-high 18 points, while Carter netted 14 thanks in part to an 8-for-10 effort at the free throw line.
 +
+Northeastern (4-4) was led by four players in double-figures highlighted by Reggie Spencer's 15 points. Quincy Ford (14 points), Demetrius Pollard (12) and Joel Smith (10) rounded out the Huskies high scorers.
 +
+The back-and-forth game featured seven ties and 11 lead changes until Williams' fast-break lay-up with just under two minutes to go gave the Minutemen the lead for go. UMass closed out the game on a 10-4 run.
 +
+The first half was a back-and-forth affair with the Minutemen leading by as many as seven, 18-11, following a Vinson three-pointer with 11:20 left in the half. The Huskies put together an 8-0 run to take a 19-18 at the 8:53 mark. From that point on, the half saw three lead changes and three ties with a Williams' three-pointer with 45 seconds left giving UMass the 30-29 lead at the break.
 +
+Coming out of the intermission, UMass put together a quick 7-0 run to go up 37-29 just under two minutes into the second half. Back-to-back Northeastern turnovers in that stretch led to a Raphiael Putney break-away dunk and a Williams three-pointer in transition.
 +
+Like the first half, the Huskies continued to trade punches with the Minutemen and put together their own 8-0 run following the first media timeout. After Northeastern tied the game 39-39 with 13:58 to go, UMass managed to stretch the lead back to six, 45-39. Chaz Williams hit a lay-up and free throw to convert a three-point play with 12:15 left in the half.
 +
+The teams traded baskets, lead changes and ties for the next six minutes until a Ford three-pointer for Northeastern sparked a 9-3 run giving the Huskies a 61-55 lead at the 4:24 mark.
 +
+Morgan's fourth consecutive three-pointer in that stretch proved the back-breaker as it brought the Minutemen back even with Northeastern 62-62 with 3:05 left in the game.
 +
+Williams hit a fast-break lay-up and Carter tipped in a Maxie Esho miss extending the UMass lead to 66-62. A pair of Williams free throws followed by four straight from Carter down the stretch sealed the win.
 +
+The Huskies missed five straight shots in the final 36 seconds before Ford's lay-up at the buzzer gave the final score.
 +
+UMass shot 47 percent from the floor (24-of-51), while Northeastern hit 35 percent (24-of-68) of its shots). The Minutemen hit four more three-pointers (7) than the Huskies with Morgan's four consecutive in the second half making the difference in the game.
 +
 +NOTES
 +
+  *UMass has won five consecutive road games dating back to the postseason NIT run last year. The last time they won 5-consecutive true road games was in 1997-98 season when Bruiser Flint's second team reeled-off seven-consecutive in opposing arenas.
+  *UMass led 30-29 at the half and is now 3-0 this season when leading at the break.
+  *The game's 7 ties and 11 lead changes are the most in a UMass contest this season.
+  *Sampson Carter made his first start of the season and 23rd of his career. It was his first start since the 2010-11 season. The lineup of Williams, Morgan, Putney, Vinson and Carter was the third different lineup this season.
+  *Nine of the 10 players who dressed for the Minutemen had played by the 10-minute mark of the first half.
+  *UMass shot .471 pct from the floor for its second-best shooting game of the season (.508 vs. Providence). Additionally, the .350 effort from outside on 7-of-20 was the second-best effort from outside this year (.375 vs. NC State).
+  *The defensive effort was among the best all seasons, with Northeastern's .353 overall shooting and .111 3-point shooting the lowest by a UMass opponent in both categories all season.
+  *Chaz Williams finished with 18 points for his seventh double-figure game this year and 56th in his career.
+  *Jesse Morgan also had 18 points to share game-high honors with Williams. He was 4-of-7 from outside, including 4-of-6 in the second half. He made his last four triples, accounting for 12 of 13 during a four-minute stretch when UMass was playing from behind late in the second half.
+  *Carter had a season-high 14 points on 3-of-5 from the floor and 8-of-10 at the free throw line in a career-high 34 minutes. His free throw numbers tied his career-high for both makes and attempts set against Maine on Dec. 8, 2010. His last double-figure scoring game (12 pts.) came against Northeastern last season.
+  *Maxie Esho finished with a team-high nine rebounds - one shy of his career-high set at Siena last Wednesday. He also played 29 minutes for a new career-high after 28 on Saturday against Miami (Fla.).
