 +==== UMass Athletics ====
+**First Half Run Leads Stony Brook Past UMass 71-58 In NIT First Round**\\
+Freddie Riley goes over the 1,000 point mark for his career\\
 +From [[http://|UMass Athletics]], 3/20/2013
+A 17-point run to close the first half gave Stony Brook a halftime lead and the Seawolves never looked back as they defeated the UMass men's basket all team 71-58 in the NIT First Round on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
+The Minutemen finish the 2012-13 season with a 21-12 overall record, while Stony Brook improves to 25-7 and will face the winner of Iowa/Indiana State in the NIT Second Round.
+UMass was led by Freddie Riley who scored 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting as he finished his career as a Minuteman with 1,006 points. Fellow senior Terrell Vinson also hit double figures with 11 points and five rebounds.
+The Seawolves received 20 points from both Anthony Jackson and Dave Coley. Jameel Warney had 16 points to round out the top scorers.
+Stony Brook closed the first half on a 17-to-0 run holding the Minutemen scoreless for the final seven minutes, five seconds. The Seawolves hit nearly 52 percent of their shots, while holding UMass to just 30 percent from the floor. Outside shooting was also problematic for the Minutemen going just 1-for-12 from beyond the arc.
+Jackson's 14 points led all players in the first half.
+The Minutemen led 25-21 with 7:05 remaining in the first half after a turnover led to a Riley alley-oop lay-up. That proved the last time UMass scored in the half as the Minutemen had five turnovers and went 0-for-5 from the field.
+UMass opened the second half with a quick 8-to-2 run thanks to a pair of three pointers from Riley and Vinson. The Minutemen cut the lead to 40-33 just 1:15 into the stanza forcing a 30-second timeout from the Seawolves.
+Riley went over the 1,000 point mark at the 17:07 mark of the half with a three-pointer from the left wing making the score 42-36.
+Three minutes later, Chaz Williams was knocked out of the game with a should injury leaving an already thin rotation of guards to play the balance of the game. Williams finished the game with two points and six assists.
+Despite the loss of the Minutemen's venerable point guard, UMass was able to keep close to Stony Brook thanks in part to a quick five-point swing off a Maxie Esho three-pointer followed by a Riley steal and lay-up at the 7:44 mark.
+Stony Brook answered on the ensuing possession, however, as Jackson hit a fade-way jumper from the right wing to extend the lead back to eight, 59-51, quieting the Minutemen's momentum.
+The UMass line-up took another blow at the 4:33 mark when Terrell Vinson fouled out finishing the game with 11 points and five rebounds.
+The Seawolves pushed the lead back to 11 points but Riley gave the Minutemen another spark of hope with a three-pointer with 1:53 to go making the score 66-58.
+Stony Brook answered with a lay-up, forced a UMass turnover and then hit two free throws on the next possession to push the lead 13 points, 71-58, with 1:24 to go effectively sealing the win.
+For the game, Stony Brook shot 51.8 percent from the floor, while UMass was just 36.7 percent. The Minutemen struggled from beyond the arc the entire game hitting just 6-of-26 three-point attempts.
+  *UMass finished the season at 21-12, advancing to the A-10 semifinals and qualifying for the NIT for the second-consecutive season. It was the Minutemen's second-straight 20-win season.
+  *UMass is now 24-22 all-time in postseason tournaments, 13-14 in NIT games and 4-1 in NIT home games.
+  *UMass trailed 38-25 at the half. The Minutemen are now 3-10 this season when trailing at the break.
+  *UMass shot 1-for-12 (8.3%) from outside in the first half, missing its final 11.
+  *Freddie Riley finished with 16 points, giving him 1,006 for his career. He became the 45th player in school history to reach 1,000 points and third this season.
+  *The Stony Brook defense held UMass to a season low 58 points in their first post season victory in school history. UMass' previous low for the season was 61 points back on Jan. 30 against La Salle.
+  *UMass only shot from the charity stripe eight times, their second lowest total of the season with their lowest amount of attempts being six against La Salle. However the Minutemen were a perfect 8-of-8.
+  *UMass' 12 steals on the night tied their season high for the third time this season. The last time UMass had 12 steals in a game was against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 1.
