Spiders Bullied in Loss to UMass
From Richmond Athletics, 2/14/2024

RICHMOND, Va. — The visiting Minutemen from Massachusetts overpowered the Spiders Wednesday night, sending Richmond to its first loss in 13 games at the Robins Center this season.

“Their physical play and aggressiveness really dictated the game, and we weren't able to find any rhythm offensively. I don't think it was our best game, but I think UMass had a lot to do with that,” said Spiders coach Chris Mooney after the 69-59 Minutemen win, their first in the Robins Center since 2012.

UMass, the larger, longer team, held the Spiders to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field (18-54), their worst in any game over the last two seasons.

“They emphasize being physical,” said Mooney. “And usually we combat that with our pace and our movement and passing and cutting — those kinds of things — to neutralize some of that. Tonight, we didn't do that enough.”

The Minutemen also dominated the boards, grabbing 46 rebounds, 17 more than the Spiders.

“They really attack the glass,” said Mooney. “That was definitely a concern. We can handle that if we're really moving and able to score in a little bit more of a consistent way.”

When Richmond did score, it mostly came at the foul line (16-25) or from three-point range (7-25). The Spiders managed just 20 points in the paint, matching their fourth fewest in any game this season.

Jordan King led Richmond with 11 points, with Isaiah Bigelow (10 points) and Dji Bailey (10 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals) joining him in double figures.

Richmond's only lead came with 11:36 left in the first half, when a three-pointer from King made the score 9-8 in favor of UR. UMass scored the next 10 points to take control of the game, building its lead to 37-24 by halftime.

A 7-0 spurt that included a three-pointer, a pair of free throws, a steal, and an assist from Mikkel Tyne pulled the Spiders within eight at 51-43 midway through the second half, but Richmond surrendered six straight after that as UMass pulled away.

The loss dropped the Spiders (17-7, 9-2 in the A-10) out of first place in the A-10. Richmond now sits behind Dayton and Loyola Chicago (both 10-2).

“We've been very good. This is an incredible team and a fun team to be around and a great team to coach and be part of, and that has to show up. You have to bounce back when you have something disappointing happen.”

The Spiders will return to action Saturday at George Washington, when they take on the Revolutionaries at 12:30 PM on USA Network.
