Boilermakers wear down the Minutemen

ANCHORAGE - The Purdue University pressure wore down the Minutemen in an 82-69 victory, as Boilermakers advance to Carrs Great Alaska Shootout finals.

Player of the game Chad Austin led Purdue with 20 points, five rebounds, and 4 assists.  University of Massachusetts star, Lari Ketner pulled down 10 rebounds and dropped 14 points but was bothered by foul trouble throughout the game.  Tyrone Weeks who led the Minutemen to victory over Southwestern Louisiana Wednesday only scored eight points.

Purdue Head Coach Gene Keady said his team shooting efficiency made the difference in the game.

"Chad Austin hit some big shots," he said.  "He needed to."

In the first Quarter, UMASS held the score tight despite a difficult Boilermaker press which forced a five second violation and one shot clock expiration in the first five minutes of the game.

The Minutemen found themselves down by only one point with less than a minute to play in the quarter before Purdue exploded into a 14-0 run which lasted nearly five minutes.  The scoring was highlighted by a Brad Miller dunk which also drew a foul and PU's Alan Eldridge knocking down a 3-pointer seconds later from the right baseline.

UMASS cut the lead as low as four points early in the third quarter, but behind a strong Purdue offense which had four players scoring in double figures, the lead was quickly extended and never again dropped below 10.

Minutemen Junior Guard Charlton Clark said UMASS knew the game was going to be physical and they just wanted to put the ball in the basket to make it a close contest.

"We just got the short end of the stick tonight," he said.

UMASS Head Coach Bruiser Flint said he was disappointed with his teams shooting and said when you shoot 32 percent from the floor against a quality team like Purdue, your going to lose.

"Everything they had was close to the basket, it wasn't like they were shooting 3-pointers." he said.
