Minutemen fall in battle of young guns
By Jim Pignatiello, The Boston Herald, 1/23/2003

PHILADELPHIA - The future of Atlantic 10 basketball was on display last night in UMass' 78-57 loss to La Salle.

The 10 starting spots between the Minutemen (6-11, 0-5 A-10) and Explorers (8-7, 2-3 A-10) were filled with seven rookies, two second-year players and one senior. While neither team is likely to make the NCAA Tournament come March, both teams' core players are underclassmen eligibility-wise.

For now, La Salle's youth has shown its superiority over UMass as rookies Gary Neal and Steven Smith combined for 36 points on 13-for-25 from the floor. The guard/forward duo grabbed 12 rebounds.

Neal leads his team, averaging 17.4 points, while Smith's 13.6 points is good for second among the Explorers.

UMass' youngsters struggled on the evening. Junior Anthony Anderson, who has two years of eligibility following this season, led the Minutemen with 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting, but has been hampered with inconsistency from the floor all season.

Freshmen Jeff Viggiano, Gabe Lee and Mike Lasme, who combine to average 29.2 points when starting, shot just 6-for-19 from the floor for 17 points last night.

Viggiano and Lasme, who is playing with a broken wrist, dished out seven assists in the game.

La Salle increased a two-point lead to a 19 with a 23-6 run that spanned 11:06 of the second half. Six Explorers scored on the streak.

``I'm sure it was a combination of our bad defense and bad offense,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said of La Salle's run.

The UMass offense, which turned the ball over 17 times in the contest, couldn't keep up with the Explorers' fast-paced game.

``It's been the same old story,'' said Lappas, whose team lost its fourth straight and is now 1-8 outside of Amherst. ``You can't put 65 points on the board. It's hard to win anywhere against anybody (doing that).''

UMass had cut an eight-point La Salle lead at the half down to 41-39 after Jackie Rogers sunk one from the charity stripe to complete a 3-point play.

Rogers, the game's lone senior starter, scored 12 points in the game. The Syracuse, N.Y., native has scored in double figures nine times in the last 10 games.

But La Salle played intense defense, something that coach Billy Hahn had been preaching to his team in practices leading up to the game.

``The intensity was the main focus,'' he said. ``That's what we've been talking about in the last two practices.''

Lappas wasn't sure if his team's problems were caused by La Salle's pressure.

``I wouldn't go to the Hall of Fame thinking about how good your defense is against us,'' Lappas said.

UMass' struggles from the free throw line continued. The Minutemen shot 13-for-25 from the charity stripe, something that has Lappas hunting the want ads.

``If you know somebody who can change that, let me know,'' Lappas said of his team's woes from the line. ``I'll pay him whatever I can pay him.''

Junior Marcus Cox did provide some relief, scoring 11 points off the UMass bench. It was his first time in double figures since the season-opener against Indiana at the Maui Invitational. He scored 14 points in that game.

UMass' 0-5 conference start is the school's worst since the 1988-89 season, when coach John Calipari's squad started out 0-6 in the A-10. That squad finished the season 6-13 in the conference.

LA SALLE 78, UMASS 57
La Salle scoring bursts break UMass
By Bob Cooney, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 1/23/2002

PHILADELPHIA - When University of Massachusetts coach Steve Lappas looked down the floor at La Salle's Tom Gola Arena last night, he saw a lot of similarities between his team and coach Billy Hahn's Explorers.

Like Lappas, Hahn is in his second year of trying to rebuild a once prominent basketball program. The coaches are using baby steps, and painfully young and inexperienced players.

If last night's game is any indication, Lappas and the Minutemen have a long way to go.

The Minutemen were schooled last night, 78-57, by a team whose top nine players include five freshmen, two sophomores, and two juniors. Combined, seven freshmen were in the starting lineups.

''It's been the same old song, obviously,'' Lappas said. ''You can't get outrebounded like we did [38-27]. You do that and it's really hard to beat anybody.

''And it really hurts that Micah Brand is playing on only one foot. He's the only guy that can go out and grab 10 rebounds for us.''

Brand, hobbled with a sprained right ankle, played 14 ineffective minutes for the Minutemen (6-11, 0-5 in the Atlantic 10). La Salle improved to 8-7, 2-3.

A quick 8-2 start for UMass, on two baskets each by Jackie Rogers and Gabe Lee, went downhill as La Salle used a 25-9 run to jump out to a 27-17 lead midway through the first half.

Troublesome for UMass was the Explorers' dominance on the boards in the first half. The younger Explorers gained a 22-16 rebounding advantage, which would have been worse had it not been for four consecutive offensive boards by the Minutemen late in the half that finally led to a Rogers follow. UMass trailed at the break, 39-31.

As in Saturday's loss to Xavier, the Minutemen shot the ball well in the first half, hitting 13-of-29 shots, but gave up too many second chances and a pair of silly fouls.

First, Marcus Cox fouled Gary Neal on a made 3-pointer. The 4-point play put the Explorers up 23-13. Less than a minute later, Jeff Viggiano fouled Neal on another 3-point attempt. Neal bagged three free throws and the frustration of the night, and perhaps the season, had Lappas boiling.

''They played tough defense,'' Lappas said. ''But hey, you're not going to get into the Hall of Fame playing defense against us.''

It seemed La Salle wanted to let the Minutemen back in the game early in the second half, as it committed six fouls in the first four minutes, which helped UMass pull within 41-39.

As in the first half, La Salle used a huge run to dismiss any hopes of the Minutemen picking up their first conference win.

Over an 11-minute stretch, UMass made just two field goals and saw La Salle rip off a 23-6 run to take a commanding 64-45 lead. Anthony Anderson led Massachusetts with 13 points, while Rogers added 12 and Cox chipped in 11.

Neal had 19 points and Steven Smith collected 17 points and seven rebounds for La Salle. And so the restoration continues. And it won't get much easier with games at George Washington Saturday and at Dayton Wednesday.

''We have a lot of people injured and a lot of young kids playing on this team,'' Anderson said. ''But coach keeps telling us to keep our heads up, and we will. But it does get frustrating.''

Explorers outhustle Minutemen, end 2-game skid
La Salle used a 21-5 run to take a 62-44 lead and put away Steve Lappas' Massachusetts squad.

La Salle men's basketball coach Billy Hahn calls them energy plays and passion plays. What he means is hustle.

What he means is aggressiveness.

The Explorers showed plenty of both last night at Tom Gola Arena, where they beat Massachusetts, 78-57, for the first time since 1999. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Explorers, who improved to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic Ten Conference.

"I was really concerned because when you don't have any seniors in a senior-leadership role, you can lose confidence by going on the road like that," said Hahn, referring to the back-to-back losses to Xavier and St. Bonaventure. "We focused on it the last two days in practice. We really talked about it.

"When you go on the road and when they jump on you like both of those teams did jump on us early, it takes away a little confidence. What happens is it takes away your aggressiveness."

Aggressiveness shows up on defense, and the Explorers played that particularly well against the Minutemen. Better than they had played it lately, anyway. The Explorers seemed to secure every loose ball and grab every rebound. They played a suffocating zone defense in the second half that made it nearly impossible for the Minutemen (6-11, 0-5) to get off a good shot.

UMass coach Steve Lappas, the former coach at Villanova, seemed more and more perplexed every time something bad happened to his team.

Hahn could not have been happier. But while Lappas agreed that La Salle played well, he also pointed out that it's just not very hard to play good defense against a team like his. UMass entered the game averaging 62.4 points per game and shooting 28.2 percent from three-point range.

"They played good defense, even though we're a tough test with how good your defense is," Lappas said dryly. "I wouldn't go to the Hall of Fame thinking about how your defense is against us, especially with how we are right now. We don't have that many weapons as it is. It's a struggle right now. No doubt."

La Salle had a 39-31 halftime lead before the Minutemen started the second half on an 8-2 run to cut it to 41-39 with 16 minutes, 56 seconds to play.

But the Explorers, like they had done early in the first half after they had fallen behind, quickly turned the game in their favor. Freshman Steven Smith nailed a three-pointer and fellow freshman Jermaine Thomas followed with a basket of his own to give the Explorers a seven-point lead.

Lappas, distraught, called a 30-second time-out. It didn't help.

Explorers freshman Gary Neal stole the ball on the next possession. He got it to Mike Cleaves, who lobbed a beautiful alley-oop pass to Smith.

Smith dunked. The rout was on.

"Coach always tells us that teams make their runs," Smith said. "It's not predictable. It just happens. That's when they made their run. We huddled up and said, 'Yo, let's just lock down.' "

They did. The Explorers used a 23-6 run to take a 64-45 lead with 6:46 to play. Neal led the Explorers with 19 points. Smith finished with 17 and Cleaves had 10. They out rebounded UMass, 38-27.

Anthony Anderson led UMass with 13 points. Jackie Rogers had 12 and Marcus Cox had 11.

"It looked like we were coming back strong," Lappas said. "I'm sure it was a combination of bad defense and bad offense. We did both, instead of just one. Let's just do one during that stretch, and maybe we can stay in it."

Late run too much for UMass
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/23/2003

PHILADELPHIA - Just over three minutes into the second half, the University of Massachusetts had nearly erased an eight-point halftime deficit and trailed La Salle by two. The Minutemen got two chances to tie the game, but Anthony Anderson missed a jump shot and Mike Lasme turned the ball over.

At the other end, La Salle's Steve Smith buried a 3-pointer from the corner, starting a 9-0 run that ballooned into a 23-6 stretch over 11 minutes and 8 seconds. That gave the Explorers a 19-point edge, their biggest lead to that point.

La Salle cruised from there and defeated the Minutemen, 78-57, at Tom Gola Arena.

"It looked like we were coming back strong," UMass coach Steve Lappas said. "I have to look at the tape, but I'm sure it was a combination of bad offense and bad defense."

"I definitely thought we had made a comeback and were going to turn it around," Anderson said. "It's frustrating."

The Minutemen dropped to 0-5 in league play and 6-11 overall. They'll remain on the road and return to action Saturday at 4 p.m. at George Washington when they try to avoid the worst start in A-10 play since the 1988-89 season when UMass started 0-6.

"I wish I could say something different," Lappas said. "It's the same old song. If we can't put 65 points up on the board, it's hard to win anywhere against anybody."

It was only the second game this season that the Minutemen lost when Anderson scored in double-figures. The junior point guard had 13 points to lead UMass. Marcus Cox scored 11 and Jackie Rogers added 10.

Freshman guard Gary Neal led the Explorers with 19 points, while Stephen Smith added 17 and Mike Cleaves had 10.

UMass scored the first six points of the game as Rogers hit a spinning hook and Gabe Lee scored twice in the lane. After a basket by Dzaflo Larkai and two free throws by Rogers made it 8-2, the Explorers sandwiched a 3 by Anderson between two 5-0 runs, giving them a 12-11 lead.

An inside hoop by Rogers briefly regained the lead for the Minutemen, but La Salle scored 11 straight points to lead 23-13 with 10:42 left in the half, putting the Minutemen on their heels for the remainder of the game.

UMass started the second half strong. Anderson hit a 3-pointer starting the 8-2 run that brought the Minutemen within two, setting up La Salle's knockout blow.

UMass continued to struggle at the free-throw line, making just 13 of 25.

"It's been horrendous all year. If you know somebody that can change that, let me know and I'll pay them whatever I can pay them to fix that. We shot more foul shots (in practice) this year than in any year in my career. Maybe we should shoot none," said Lappas, who then committed to the plan. "That is what we're going to do. We're not going to shoot another one all year. That's all we do is shoot fouls. We can't get any worse."

Rebounding still a problem
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/23/2003

PHILADELPHIA - University of Massachusetts coach Steve Lappas tried to go to a man-to-man defense to improve his team's rebounding position, but even that couldn't overcome the Minutemen's recent woes on the glass.

Opponents had been outrebounding La Salle by over three boards per game, but the Explorers outrebounded UMass, 37-21. In five Atlantic 10 games, opponents have grabbed 179 boards to UMass' 136.

"That's one of the reasons we're playing man-to-man because it's easier to rebound when you play man-to-man than in a zone," Lappas said.

Lappas also pointed to Micah Brand's right ankle injury as part of the problem.

"Micah Brand being on one foot definitely isn't helping," Lappas said. "He was one of our two or three leading rebounders all year. He's one of the few guys that is capable of getting 10 rebounds."

BRAND PLAYS: Brand, who was a game-time decision, did see action. He scored four points and grabbed one rebound in 14 minutes of action.

Brand hasn't practiced since he injured his ankle prior to UMass' loss to Rhode Island on Jan. 15.

"I'm thinking of not playing him again until he practices again," Lappas said. "I don't know if we're going to do that. We're risking prolonging the injury and that's stupid. I probably should have just sat him out the last game and this game."

ROOKIE SHOWDOWN: In addition to winning the game, the Explorers also got the better of the battle of the rookies. Explorer rookie starters Gary Neal, Stephen Smith, Jermaine Thomas and Dzaflo Larkai combined for 50 points, an average of 12.2 each, while Minutemen first-year players Gabe Lee, Mike Lasme and Jeff Viggiano combined for 17 (5.7 each).

After shining in his first three games as a starter, Viggiano has come back to earth with the extra defensive attention he's receiving now. He went 0-for-5 from the field and finished with four points.

ROAD RECORD: UMass is now 0-8 against Division I teams on the road. The Minutemen's lone win away from the Mullins Center, came in Maui over Division II Chaminade.

TOUGH 21 SECONDS: In one 21-second stretch, UMass junior Marcus Cox had two turnovers and two fouls, one of which resulted in a four-point play for Gary Neal.

With 11 points, Cox did have his first double-figure scoring game since the season-opener against Indiana.

FIRST TIME: UMass is 0-5 in Atlantic 10 play for the first time since 1988-89 when the Minutemen started 0-6.

MISSED MILESTONE: Lappas had a chance to pick up career-win No. 250 against the same team he got No. 200 against as his Villanova team beat La Salle 80-72 on Jan. 12, 2000. Lappas' next defeat will be No. 200 of his career. His career-record at UMass, Villanova and Manhattan is 249-199.

Since leaving Villanova, Lappas is 0-3 in the city against members of Philadelphia's traditional Big 5 (Villanova, Temple, Penn, La Salle and Saint Joseph's).

MISCELLANEOUS: UMass' 2-for-12 shooting from 3-point range is actually its best in the past three games after going 1-for-15 against Xavier and 2-for-15 against Rhode Island. ... La Salle's Rasheed Quadri and UMass' Raheim Lamb were high school teammates at Boston English. ... The two teams featured players from eight different countries - Canada, England, Nigeria, France, Greece, Mali, Ivory Coast and the United States. ... Former UMass assistant coach Geoff Arnold, who is an assistant under Bruiser Flint, and director of basketball operations Pat Plunket, who now works for Sportstec, were in attendance.
