UMass eyes Bronx win
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/21/2004

A game at Fordham for most men's basketball teams in the Atlantic 10 has represented a breather, a likely win and a chance for players to get some confidence back.

The Rams have provided no such luxury to the University of Massachusetts.

For the past two years, Rose Hill Gymnasium has been the scene of two of the Minutemen's worst defeats.

In the 2001-02 season, the Rams came into their Jan. 12 meeting with UMass on a five-game losing streak in the midst of a season that would see them finish last in the A-10.

But previously unknown Adrian Walton exploded for 25 points as Fordham stunned UMass 95-86.

Last year, the Rams came into the game at 1-10 on a 10-game losing streak. The most recent loss was an 87-54 pounding at the hands of Holy Cross.

UMass appeared to be on the verge of turning its season around. Fresh off an upset of North Carolina State, the Minutemen were 5-6 and hoping to get to .500.

Fordham won only two games last year and one of them came Jan. 5, 2003, when the Rams beat UMass 80-67. That time, the previously unknown standout Ram was Anthonique Wilson who had a career-high 14 in that game.

This year, the Rams are 4-18 and 1-10 in the Atlantic 10 play. They enter Saturday's game at 1 p.m. on a nine-game losing streak, a stretch that included some national press when Fordham was caught using walkie-talkies to try to get advanced knowledge or Xavier's plays in a 74-52 loss.

The Minutemen are hoping to avoid a third Bronx disaster.

''I haven't won there,'' Anderson said. ''You go in there and you feel like its a team that's beatable. I'm going to tell these young guys that we can't go in here sleeping. We've lost three in a row. This is a win we need.''

Lappas said he isn't as worried about the past as he is about the team's energy level as it heads into its final five games and the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

''I hope that we're not wearing out now,'' Lappas said. ''In the seven, eight games since we've been playing like this, Jeff Viggiano has had to play 35 minutes underneath banging around. We have to be careful right now. We're trying to scale back in practice right now because of the grind. But our young guys really need the practice. You're kind of damned if you do and damned if you don't.''

One of Viggiano's banging opponents will be Fordham's Michael Haynes, who is averaging 17.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Both lead the Rams.

''We know Haynes is a great player. We know we barely pulled it out here, so it's going to be tough,'' Anderson said.

The Minutemen had a big lead when the teams played Jan. 28 at the Mullins Center, but had to hold on late to hold off the Rams 76-60. Haynes had 28 in that game to lead Fordham, while Art Bowers and Rashaun Freeman each had 18 for the Minutemen.

FREEMAN HONORED - Freeman was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches District 1 Second Team. District 1 includes all of New England. Freeman is the only first-year player in the district to be honored.

UMass loses to Rams
By Mike Marzilli, The Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 2/23/2004

BRONX, N.Y. - On Saturday afternoon, the Massachusetts men's basketball team delved further into ineptitude than ever before, and it was not a pretty sight.

Before 2,232 at the historic Rose Hill Gymnasium, the Minutemen fell 75-61 to a lowly Fordham squad that had been losers of nine in a row.

Amidst questions of which direction the program is truly heading, UMass (9-15, 2-3 Atlantic 10) coach Steve Lappas tried to remain upbeat.

"I'm disappointed, but I'm not discouraged," Lappas said. "I still feel our young kids have a lot left in their tanks.

"We didn't play well, especially defensively in the first half. We dug a big hole, and it was certainly a tough one to get out of."

Now losers of four in a row, the Minutemen face the daunting task of hosting undefeated No. 2 St. Joseph's on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. It is the first of four remaining games for UMass, which is now guaranteed a losing record both in the Atlantic 10 and overall for the third consecutive season. The frustration is beginning to mount.

"I don't think anyone's going through the motions," junior captain Anthony Anderson said. "The effort is there, we just aren't getting it done and it isn't getting any easier."

"I knew we'd have ups and downs," freshman guard Art Bowers added. "But I never expected anything like this."

The Rams (5-18, 2-4 A-10), who had lost their last nine contests by an average of 19 points prior to yesterday, beat UMass for the second consecutive year at Rose Hill - the oldest facility in Division I.

Fordham, which shot 65.4 percent in the first half and 53.8 percent on the game, was led by leading scorer Michael Haynes' 18 points. Point guard Drew Williamson - inserted into the starting lineup in place of injured starter Jermaine Anderson - chipped in with 15 while backcourt mate Derrick Breyland added 14 points and five assists.

The lone bright spots for the Minutemen included a team-high 15 points from freshman Maurice Maxwell, along with 11 points each from guard Chris Chadwick and sophomore forward Jeff Viggiano.

Another area of concern for Lappas, however, is the play of five-time A-10 Rookie of the Week Rashaun Freeman. The sophomore forward scored just four points and eight rebounds, and was benched in favor of Stephane Lasme for all but six minutes of the second half.

Freeman has shot just 8 for 27 in his last four games.

"I'm very concerned about [Freeman]," said Lappas, who did not seem opposed to the possibility of removing his leading scorer from the starting lineup. "Obviously, [opponents] are watching tape and doing things defensively on him, and he's struggling."

The Rams took it to the Maroon and White from the outset, repeatedly slicing through UMass' man to man defense to turn an early 10-9 advantage at the 15:13 mark into a commanding lead with a 17-4 run.

The Minutemen eventually shifted to a zone, but Fordham was able to alter its focus to the perimeter and connect on five of nine attempts from beyond the arc in the first half to jump out to a 39-20 lead at intermission.

The Rams took their largest lead of the game with 35 seconds remaining in the opening frame, when a Haynes 3-pointer made the score 39-18.

"Our defense in the first half was awful," Lappas said. "Our man-to-man has taken a hit in the last month, because we've been practicing five or six defenses, rather than one or two."

UMass attempted to make a go of it to begin the second half, as five points from Viggiano sparked a 7-0 run. However, Fordham responded with an 11-2 run that pushed its lead to 50-29 with just over 14 minutes remaining, and did not look back.

"We tried to make a big comeback, but it's tough when you dig that big of a hole for yourself on the road," Lappas said. "This is a tough one to swallow, but we have to pick ourselves up and go from here."

Painfully familiar scene for UMass
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/23/2004

BRONX, N.Y. - It's almost eerie how similar the scripts have been.

For the third straight year, an unheralded player on a bad Fordham team had a career-game leading the Rams past the University of Massachusetts 75-61 Saturday at Rose Hill Gymnasium. We didn't play well. We played awful defensively, especially in the first half, UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''You have to be ready to play all the time in Division I.''

The Minutemen knew the history. They talked about it before the game, but they were doomed to repeat it anyway.

This year's Ram hero du jour was Drew Williamson, a 6-foot-4, seemingly slow-footed sophomore guard who was averaging 4.8 points per game off the bench. But starting in place of injured point guard Jermaine Anderson, Williamson scored a season-high 15 points, more than the combined total of the Minutemen's Rashaun Freeman (four points) and Anthony Anderson (six).

UMass was bad defensively and not much better offensively in the first half. The Minutemen trailed 8-7 just over four minutes into the game, but Michael Haynes (18 points, six rebounds) and Williamson led a 9-2 run that ballooned into a 19-6 surge that gave the home team a 27-13 lead.

A 3-pointer by Haynes with 33 seconds left in the half gave Fordham its biggest lead at 39-18, but Artie Bowers' jumper with four seconds left made it 39-20 at intermission.

''We came out in the first half and obviously didn't play well, especially defensively,'' Lappas said. ''We dug ourselves a big hole that was hard to get out of. In the second half, I thought we gave a great effort. We tried to make a big comeback, but it's tough when you dig one that deep on the road.''

Baskets by Bowers and Rashaun Freeman and a 3-point play by Jeff Viggiano (11 points) comprised a 7-0 UMass run to start the second half that brought the Minutemen within 12 at 39-27.

But Fordham answered with an 11-2 run that knocked out UMass. Ram coach Dereck Whittenburg praised his team's resiliency.

''The best thing we've done is kept up the morale of this team,'' Whittenburg said. ''For all we've been through, we're still playing hard. We're starting to understand what it takes a little bit.''

The Minutemen (9-15, 3-9) have lost four straight, their second longest losing streak of the season. They will try to right their seemingly sinking ship at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Mullins Center against No. 2 Saint Joseph's, which is one of only two remaining undefeated teams in the nation.

Maurice Maxwell led the Minutemen with 15 points, while Chris Chadwick added 11.

Freeman only played 21 minutes and scored just four points. Lappas said because of Freeman's scoring struggles, he thought freshman Stephane Lasme was a better option defensively.

''I'm very concerned about Ray,'' Lappas said. ''The last four games he's struggled. Obviously people are watching tape of him. He's got to keep working on (using) his right hand. He works on it in practice every day, but he's hesitant to use it in a game.''

Minutemen hit bottom at Fordham
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/23/2004

BRONX, N.Y. - The question has inevitably been asked after any ugly loss by the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team in recent years. Is this the worst loss in the Steve Lappas era?

Saturday I answered yes. There have been some bad ones, but the 75-61 game at Fordham was the worst.

Against a bad Rams team that was on a nine-game losing streak, the Minutemen looked overmatched.

UMass has lost to bad teams before. It has lost to good teams by lopsided margins, but this was 14-point defeat to a bad team.

Fordham isn't a young team that's going to be good when its guys get more experience either. It's a bad team that won't get better until it gets better players.

Coach Dereck Whittenburg admitted earlier in the year that his team only has four Division I-caliber players.

From its roster that needs overhauling, to its antiquated facilities to the fact that 23-games into the season Alessandro Acquaviva's name is still spelled wrong on the back of his home jersey, Fordham is a ragtag operation.

But on Saturday, the Rams looked-like a postseason bound team against the Minutemen. Fordham's Michael Haynes had to change numbers during the game because he bled on his original jersey. He scored more in each jersey that Rashaun Freeman and Anthony Anderson, UMass' top two scorers, did in the game.

It wasn't just skill things either. Fordham beat UMass to loose balls. The Minutemen's defense was poor, allowing the Rams to shoot 65 percent in the first half and 54 percent for the game.

Any positive energy created by the Minutemen's four-game winning streak a month ago is long gone. If UMass loses at Temple on March 3, the Minutemen will have lost to every team in the Atlantic 10. Considering the margin of Saturday's defeat, it could easily be argued that UMass is the worst team in the conference right now.

Its hard to imagine that most of the UMass players don't want the season to be over. There's little left to play for.

A major miracle would be required for an Atlantic 10 Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth, and a minor one would still be necessary to make the National Invitation Tournament. It can't be easy going out in front of a near-empty Mullins Center knowing that.

Saturday's loss will only add to the growing number of fans who are disenchanted with Steve Lappas, a distraction that will only further the misery of the season's last couple of weeks.

The Minutemen's four remaining games feature an unwinnable contest Wednesday night against No. 2 Saint Joseph's, road games against a good Richmond team and the recently hot Temple Owls, and a home game against St. Bonaventure, which already has beaten UMass once.

This Minuteman team needs me to be right (not always a good proposition). They need this to be their worst loss. They need it to be rock bottom and start building positively. This year is all but over. But any improvement and lessons learned from the remainder of the 2003-04 season could pay dividends in 2004-05 and keep losses like Saturday's from ever happening again.
