ith final exams in the rearview mirror and the short holiday break upcoming, the University of Massachusetts will try to head into Christmas on a high note. To do that, the Minutemen must beat Rider at 7 tonight as they continue the longest home stand in Mullins Center history. This is the second of a six-game stretch in Amherst.
UMass coach Steve Lappas said the Minutemen aren't overlooking the 4-3 Broncs.
''They're a dangerous team because they can score,'' Lappas said. ''They push the ball up and they have very good 3-point shooters.''
UMass (4-3) will start its fifth different lineup in eight games. Chris Chadwick remains at point guard in place of the suspended Anthony Anderson. Junior big man Rashaun Freeman returns to the lineup at forward after coming off the bench Sunday in a 70-67 win over Davidson.
Chadwick will get a good look at Rider leading scorer Jerry Johnson who scored 12 against UMass last season. The 6-foot senior guard is leading Rider with 14.6 points and 4.1 assists per game.
''They have very good guards,'' Lappas said. ''Jerry Johnson is a very good player. He scores a lot.''
The Broncs have one of the Metro Atlantic Conference's best inside duos in Edwin Muniz and Steve Castleberry.
Muniz, a 6-foot-7-inch forward, is averaging 11 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Castleberry is at 8.9 points and 4.9 rebounds. This will be Castleberry's third game against the Minutemen. He was on the Marist team in 2001-02 that lost to UMass as well as last season's Rider squad.
''Muniz is a tough matchup for our big men because he can play out on the perimeter and shoot threes,'' Lappas said.
Stephane Lasme had a breakout game when UMass won 74-61 Feb. 3 at Rider. He scored in double figures for the first time with 12 against the Broncs.
Rider arrives coming off back-to-back losses to Fairleigh-Dickinson and Delaware after opening the year 4-1, including a win over former UMass coach Bruiser Flint's Drexel squad.

MHERST, Mass. - Behind a career-high 21 points by sophomore Art Bowers (Wilmington, Del.) as well as 21 points and 13 rebounds from sophomore Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.), the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team defeated Rider, 73-63, Thursday night at the Mullins Center. Bowers tallied 18 of his points in the second half as he went 5-for-11 from three-point range in the game.
The Minutemen have now won two games in a row and are 5-3 on the season. The loss drops Rider to 4-4. It was the first time since Jan. 29, 2002 that two Minutemen have scored 20 points. It also marked Freeman's 14th career double-double and seventh 20-point game.
Massachusetts enjoyed its largest lead of the season at 20 points, 49-29, at the 14:29 mark of the second half following a Bowers three-pointer. Rider then began to chip away and capitalized on a UMass scoring drought. The Minutemen went 5:15 without a field goal and the Broncs were able to make the game close. Rider outscored the Minutemen, 14-2, over a 4:55 stretch to make it a 58-52 game with 6:24 left. Bowers broke the streak with a basket at the 6:09 mark and following a missed Rider basket, freshman Lawrence Carrier (San Bernardino, Calif.) drained a three-pointer to give UMass a double-digit lead again. Massachusetts was 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final three minutes to seal the win.
The Minutemen used an aggressive defense in the first half to take a 37-22 lead at halftime. The 22 points by Rider marked the fewest points by a UMass opponent in any half this season. The Minutemen used a quick 6-0 run in a minute mid-way through the first half to take a 16-8 lead at the 12:21 mark. Four points in a row by freshman Jeff "Big Deli" Salovski (Bristol, Conn.) a few minutes later gave UMass its first double-digit lead, 24-13, at the 6:23 mark.
UMass had 12 points off 10 Rider turnovers in the first half. Freeman led the way for UMass with 12 points and six boards in the first stanza. Junior Jeff Viggiano (Suffield, Conn.) had six points and six boards in the first half, but left the game in the second half with a sprained ankle. The Minutemen also had a 24-14 advantage in the paint during the first stanza.
Massachusetts shot 44 percent (24-54) from the field while Rider was 39 percent (25-64). The Minutemen held a 43-32 edge on the glass and tied a season high with seven blocked shots.
Jerry Johnson led Rider with 15 points, while Jason Thompson had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Massachusetts continues its six-game homestand on Tuesday, Dec. 28, by hosting Boston University at the Mullins Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. It will be the 2,000th game in program history. For tickets, please call the Athletic Ticket Office at 1-866-UMASS-TIX.

Mass had two players with 20 points in a game for the first time since Jan. 29, 2002 as Art Bowers scored 21 and Rashaun Freeman had 20. In that game, Shannon Crooks had 21 and Anthony Anderson had 20 vs. Dayton.
� Bowers set his career-high in points with 21. He previously scored 19 vs. Temple on Jan. 24, 2004. His tied his career-best for made field goals, as he also set that original mark in that Temple game. Bowers' five made three-pointers was a career-high as he made four on three previous occasions.
� Bowers went into double-figures for the third straight game with 19. It was his 16th game with 10-or more points in his career.
� After averaging 7.6 points in his first five games this season, Bowers is averaging 16.3 over his last three games. He has also hit 12 of his last 24 from three-point range after starting the year 1-for-23.
� Freeman scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the first half. For Freeman, it was his sixth double-figure game of the season and 30th of his collegiate career in 37 games.
� Freeman's point total was his seventh career 20-point game and second this season.
� Freeman had his 14th career double-double and second this season, as he had 13 rebounds. It was also a season high in rebounds as his previous best was 11 vs. Northeastern. It was his most rebounds in a game since his career-high and Mullins Center record vs. St. Bonaventure on Feb. 28, 2004.
� Before going down with a sprained right ankle, Jeff Viggiano hauled down a season-best seven rebounds along with six points.
� Rider's 22 first-half points were the fewest UMass allowed in any half this season. They allowed Birmingham-Southern 24 in the first half vs. BSC.
� UMass built its largest lead of the season at 20 points (49-29) with 14:33 left in the second half on a Bowers trey. UMass lead Birmingham Southern by 18 (42-24) at the end of the first half for the previous largest margin of a lead.
� UMass is now 7-0 all-time vs. Rider, winning in each of the last three seasons.
� UMass is in the midst of its longest homestand (six games) in more than 70 years, as the school hosted seven home games in a row in 1930-31 at Drill Hall.
� Next game vs. Boston University will be the 2,000th game in UMass men's basketball history. The Minutemen have an all-time record of 1,049-950 heading into the game.
� For UMass, walk-on Nana Ampim dressed for the first time this season. Wearing No. 40, Ampim is a freshman guard, 6-1, 195, who is a native of London, England. He graduated from South Brunswick High School in New Jersey.
� Freshman Olivier Lamoureux also dressed after sitting out the last few games with Achilles and shoulder injuries.

Head Coach Steve Lappas on the win:
I thought our guys played a great defensive game. Our defense is so much improved. The biggest thing for me is that we are a much improved defensive team and I think that showed.
Our first half was a good defensive one. We probably made one defensive mistake the first half. I thought our guys did a great job. The second half got a little crazy. Chris Chadwick had cramps and then Jeff Viggiano gets hurt (sprained ankle). It was like losing two guys, two really important guys.
We had some different combinations on the court at different times tonight, but I thought overall we did a great job defensively.
Lappas on Art Bowers finding his offense:
The odd thing was that for the first two months of practice, before we played a game, he was knocking them down. Then the games started and he just wasn't making them until the Miami game. He's a big part of our team, if Art is hitting shots like that, then the Gonzaga game is a whole different ball of wax. He's important.
Lappas on playing different combinations:
I think more than anything else, the last two games show that they guys are driven with a purpose. I was very worried about this game, with Christmas, players going home, a good team but one with not so big of a name. But I thought we played tremendous with intensity and purpose. I am happy with what I am seeing from these guys. They want to go out there and get something done.
Art Bowers on his game and his improved shooting:
Tonight was about the win. We needed the game. In normal situations I was trying to be aggressive.
They are the same shots (I was taking). When my foot was hurting, I was missing. Now that my foot is better I am making the same shots that I was taking.
Rashaun Freeman on his game against the defense:
I had a lot of chances to kick the ball out in practice. My coaches know that I am going to get doubled every time, so I have to adjust. I am getting a little better at it. Last game I had no turnovers. This game I had three, but I should have had none tonight. I just have to continue to get better and try to overcome the double-teams (I face).
