Big game for rivals at URI
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/25/2006

The rivalry between the universities of Massachusetts and Rhode Island lacks the passion of most series between nearby conference rivals.

Despite the proximity, two annual games and the mutual conference, nobody on either side marks the calendar when the two teams play. UMass fans are more concerned with Connecticut and Boston College, while Rhody supporters are comparing themselves to Providence.

But when the teams meet at 7:30 tonight at the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I., it's a big game, even if casual fans don't think so.

The two teams with postseason aspirations and identical 4-1 league marks are playing for sole possession of second place in the Atlantic 10. In the unlikely event that George Washington loses at Duquesne tonight, the UMass-URI winner would be in first place as the conference slate approaches its halfway point.

The contest starts a three-game road trip for the Minutemen (9-6 overall). Ford said the games present a considerable opportunity.

'Anytime you can go on the road and win, when you are winning at home, it's going to set you up. I've always said you have to win your home games and go on the road and get some bonuses,' Ford said. 'We've got three in a row and they're all going to be tough. Everybody plays their best at home. We have to come out with a better effort than we've had. We can't sit back and think that beating Temple is as good as it gets. We have to improve at every aspect of our game if we're going to win on the road.'

The Rams (10-6) lost their league opener at Charlotte, but have won four straight over Fordham, La Salle, St. Bonaventure and Richmond. They are 7-3 at the Ryan Center.

After finishing 9-21 last year, the return of senior guard Dawan Robinson has rejuvenated URI.

Robinson, who sat out last season with a medical redshirt, started slowly, but has rounded back into form lately. He is averaging 15.4 points and 4.3 assists per game.

Robinson had 26 points Saturday in Rhode Island's 58-46 win over Richmond, the top defensive team in the Atlantic 10.

Robinson has Ford's attention.

'Dawan Robinson is the type of player that can beat you by himself. He's that good. He's got to be one of the top 10 players in our league,' Ford said. 'He's very difficult to guard one on one. He's good from 3-point range. For a point guard he's got size. As an overall basketball player, there's not many better in our league.'

Despite being relatively undersized up front, the Rams have been a good rebounding team and are averaging 6.1 more boards per game than their opponents. Senior forward Jamaal Wise, who also sat out last year with an injury, leads the team with 5.6 rebounds to go along with his 10.8 points per game.

Rhode Island's rebounding skill makes it that much more important for UMass to keep Rashaun Freeman on the floor. Foul trouble has limited the junior big man's minutes in the past three games.

'He's got to be in position better,' Ford said. 'A couple of the fouls he got the last couple games, he was out of position. He was caught trying to recover. Hopefully he'll move his feet and be in the right position.'

UMass swept the Rams a year ago, and URI coach Jim Baron has been impressed with the Minutemen so far this season.

'They're a very good basketball team. They have very good balance, very good athletic ability,' Baron said. 'Jeff Viggiano is playing very well as a senior. Freeman is very physical. Very strong. It's going to be a challenge for us. They've been playing well as of late.'

NO CHANGE WITH MAXWELL - Maurice Maxwell's status remains officially unchanged. The Minuteman junior guard hasn't played or practiced with the team since Jan. 6 when he was suspending for failing to meet athletic department academic standards.

Asked if it was possible that Maxwell could still return this season, Ford responded: 'I really don't know right now.'

Ford said he isn't sure when he would know. The spring semester beings Tuesday at UMass.

Rhode Island 58, Massachusetts 55
From The Associated Press, 1/25/2006

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) -- Dawan Robinson's 3-pointer with three seconds to play lifted Rhode Island to a 58-55 win over Massachusetts on Wednesday night.

The Minutemen's Chris Lowe missed a 25-foot desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Robinson finished with 14 points for Rhode Island (11-6 overall, 5-1 Atlantic 10) which won its fifth consecutive game.

Massachusetts (9-7, 4-2) trailed 53-45 with 1:13 to play but tied the game 55-55 on Rashaun Freeman's layup with 10.6 seconds to play.

Robinson brought the ball up the court and hit an open 3-pointer from the right.

Freeman led UMass with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Will Daniels and Parfait Bitee each had 11 for Rhode Island and Jimmy Baron scored 10.

Jeff Viggiano also had 14 and James Life scored 13 for Massachusetts, including 11 in the final six minutes.

Viggiano sparked Massachusetts with nine points in the first half, including a 3-pointer and a dunk on back-to-back possessions to start a 9-0 run that turned a 14-8 deficit into a 17-14 lead.

Bitee scored the last four points of the first half to give the Rams a 28-22 lead at halftime.

Post-game notes
From UMass Athletics, 1/25/2006

UMass held its fifth straight opponent under 40 percent from the floor as the Rams shot just 37 percent from the field.

* Stephane Lasme had 7 blocked shots which moved him past himself, Lari Ketner (73) and Harper Williams (74) for the fourth-best single-season in school-history with 75. Lasme blocked 72 shots as a sophomore last season. Lasme is fourth in career blocks with 198.

* Rashaun Freeman scored in double-figures for the 12th time in 16 games this season and 58th in his career in 73 career games. Freeman also had a double-double with 10 rebounds.

* Jeff Viggiano scored in double-figures for the fourth game in a row, the second time this season he has broken double-figures in four straight games. He finished with 14, his ninth game with 10 or more this season and 35th of his career.

* James Life also broke into double-figures for the sixth time this year with 13 points.

* UMass went on a 9-0 run midway through the first half holding URI scoreless from 11:38 until 7:00, when Jimmy Baron hit the Rams first 3-pointer of the game. That tied the game at 17-17.

Robinson's trey puts Rams over the top
A 3-pointer by Rhody's Dawan Robinson with three seconds left decides a physical and intense battle with Massachusetts
By Paul Kenyon, The Providence Journal Sports Writer, 1/26/2006

SOUTH KINGSTOWN -- The Atlantic 10 did a good thing, the right thing, when it made sure the URI and UMass basketball teams will continue to play twice each season.

The intensity in the series -- the fun in the next-door rivalry -- is back. It's back big time after what happened last night.

Rhode Island scored its most exciting victory in two years last night, 58-55 over the Minutemen at the Ryan Center. It took a 3-pointer from the right elbow by Dawan Robinson with three seconds left to decide a physical, intense contest that brought back memories of the many great games between the schools over the years.

The teams went at it throughout, battling, bruising and bumping, even exchanging unpleasant words several times. URI led by nine, 51-42, with two minutes left. The Minutemen, who had been struggling with their outside shooting, surged back with the help of three 3-point baskets. They pulled within 55-53 on a trey by Jeff Viggiano with 16 seconds left, then got the ball back when they forced a turnover on the inbounds pass. Rashaun Freeman scored from inside with 10 seconds left to tie it.

Since both teams were out of timeouts, play had to move on. URI inbounded the ball to Robinson, and the team leader did what he has done several times before. He took the ball the length of the floor, under some pressure, pulled up as he reached the 3-point line at the offensive end and drilled the game-winner. UMass came back and Chris Lowe's 23-footer bounced off the backboard and the rim as the buzzer sounded.

When it was over, coach Jim Baron, in a scene reminiscent of several thrillers in the first two years of the Ryan Center's existence, took to the public address system, pointed in all directions and said, "Thank you, thank you" repeatedly to the crowd of 5,032, which still was on its feet cheering.

"That's what Dawan does. He plays to win," said Baron. "He's done that before. He stepped up and made a big-time shot."

"Big-time players make big time plays, and I think Dawan Robinson is a big-time player," said first-year Masschusetts coach Travis Ford. "He means a whole lot to their basketball team."

"It was just freelancing," Robinson said of his game-winner. "I just tried to get to the right spot and get the ball off . . . When I got the ball I looked at the time. I knew we had a lot of time."

The victory boosted URI to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in Atlantic 10 play. The Rams have sole possession of second place heading into their showdown Saturday in Washington, D.C., with George Washington, the unbeaten leader. UMass fell to 9-7 and 4-2.

Robinson led the Rams with 14 points, as well as 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. Parfait Bitee, who had perhaps the best performance of his college career, and Will Daniels each added 11 points, and Jimmy Baron had 10.

The teams went at it from the start, with points hard to come by, as they so often have been in the series. But where that sometimes was because the teams were not as strong as they have been in the past, this one was a match between two good, physical teams.

URI had the upper hand much of the way, although it was never able to break it open. Bitee had a great first half, with his 11 points and 4 steals. Daniels had some big baskets late. UMass, though, used its two big men, Rashaun Freeman (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Stephane Lasme (5 points, 6 rebounds, 7 blocked shots), to fight back. When URI got its lead to 10 midway through the second half, Viggiano (14 points) and James Life (13) hit from the outside to keep the Minutemen in it, then bring them back. Overall, though, defense and rebounding dominated. Both teams shot less than 40 percent.

"I didn't think we played particularly well, but we didn't play well because Rhode Island got after us," Ford said. "I was happy with our effort tonight. We played hard. We know how physical Rhode Island is."

The Minutemen kept clawing and, when they finally pulled even on Freeman's basket with 10 seconds left, they had the momentum. But not for long.

"Give them a lot of credit. They withstood a big run by us at the end," Ford said. "That can be very deflating."

"It's a great team victory," Baron said.

"The whoel game was just real intense. The fans were wonderful," Robinson said. "We just wanted to leave this gym victorious today, and we did."

The good news is the teams will meet again in 10 days. A-10 teams play most opponents once this season. They play three teams twice.

The Rams and Minutemen will have to go a ways to put on as good a show in Amherst as they did last night.

URI Baskeball Notebook: Rebounding and pressure made difference for Rhody
By Paul Kenyon, The Providence Journal Sports Writer, 1/26/2006

SOUTH KINGSTOWN -- Beyond Dawan Robinson's game-winning shot, two other factors stood out last night in URI's thrilling 58-55 victory over Massachusetts at the Ryan Center.

Perhaps the biggest was rebounding. The physical teams came in as the leading rebounding clubs in the A-10.

"We told our players whoever was going to win the battle of the boards was going to have the best chance to win the game," said Rhody coach Jim Baron. URI won it, 42-39. The Rams had 16 offensive boards, which led to 16 points. The Minutemen had 15 offensive boards, leading to 11 points.

"That was a very physical game, a heavyweight job," Baron said. "We had a lot of guys who stepped up and did what they needed to do."

"You saw two really good rebounding teams tonight," said UMass coach Travis Ford. "They are the most physical team in the league. We haven't played everyone yet, but if there is a team more physical than them, we're going to be in trouble."

Each team also had eight blocks. Stephane Lasme, a much-improved player, had seven for UMass. He is third in the country in blocks. To battle Lasme and Rashaun Freeman (10 rebounds) inside, URI used Jon Clark, J.R. Moore and Terrence Mack, and all played well.

The other key for URI was its pressure. The Rams pressed more than they have in any game all season. They forced 15 turnovers, 12 in the first half. They tied their season high in steals with 10, four by Parfait Bitee, three by Robinson.

"We wanted to extend the floor," Baron said. "We watched a lot of tape."

Becoming more visible

Last night's game was televised locally on cable systems in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, the start of an interesting stretch for URI.

Unlike UMass, which had its game against Temple on ESPN last weekend, the Rams have yet to play on the Atlantic 10 network. The Atlantic 10 put together a package that includes eight games involving conference teams on ESPN, 13 on ESPN2 and 29 on the A-10 network, which includes Cox Sports Television and NESN.

URI will not appear on any of the network telecasts until the 20th of the season, Feb. 12 at Fordham, part of the Sunday afternoon package. Apparently, conference officials had confidence URI would be a solid team because the Rams are a big part of the package late in the season. The Rhody games Feb. 18 when Saint Joseph's visits, Feb. 22 at Saint Louis and March 4 at Dayton all are part of the network package. Next Wednesday's home game against Saint Louis also will be televised by Cox Sports, as will the Feb. 8 game when Duquesne visits.

A-10 agreement

The Atlantic 10 announced an agreement yesterday to have the CSTV Network handle all the conference long-term media and marketing rights for all 21 men's and women's sports. The CSTV Network is now part of the CBS Corp. and is the leading digital and cable programming company dedicated to college sports.

"This deal gives the Atlantic 10 more access to placing more games and sports across more platforms than ever before," said Linda Bruno, the A-10 commissioner. "The opportunities that will be available to us will impact everything from recruiting to fund-raising, from team spirit to overall outreach for our student-athletes worldwide. No longer do geographic and schedule limitations prevent us from connecting with everyone who wants to follow Atlantic 10 sports."

The agreement begins in the next school year. At the same time, the conference also announced a multi-year extension to its television agreement with ESPN and ESPN2 for men's and women's basketball.

Double dribbles

The game ball was presented by Sgt. Kyle Gagnon. A URI grad, he is with the 143rd airlift wing, based out of Quonset. He has served in Southwest Asia for most of the last two years in support of both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom . . . With his first points last night, Robinson passed Dave Stenhouse (Class of 1955) for 40th place on the school's all-time scoring list. Robinson also recently passed Ken Goodwin ('49), former teammate Dustin Hellenga and Marc Upshaw . . . Cuttino Mobley's picture was on last night's ticket, part of the centennial celebration in which a former Rhody player is being recognized at each home game this season . . . Kourtney McMenamin, a member of URI's swimming and diving team, was honored at halftime. She is a three-time member of the A-10 commissioner's honor roll, is in five honor societies, and serves on the school's student-advisory committee.

Robinson's last second heroics save Rams
By Evan Crawley, The Good 5 Cigar, 1/26/2006
The Good 5 Cigar is URI's student newspaper

"Big time players make big time shots, and Dawan Robinson is a big time player," said University of Massachusetts head coach Travis Ford shortly after his team lost to the Rams 58-55 on a three by Robinson with three seconds remaining.

The Rams led 53-45 with 1:12 remaining, only to squander their lead by missing free throws and allowing open looks. UMass tied the game on a lay-up by center Rashaun Freeman.

However the Rams responded, prevailing on a three-point jumper by Robinson with three seconds remaining in a tie game. Head coach Jim Baron said of the shot, "I mean, that is what Dawan does."

Robinson said, "I knew it was going to go in, I just had that feeling."

Chris Lowe got off a 22-foot runner as time expired for UMass, but the shot missed after connecting with the backboard and the rim.

With their 58-55 victory, the Rams take sole possession of second place in the A-10, only trailing 5-0 (15-1 overall) No. 14 George Washington.

Robinson finished the game with 14 points, six rebounds, seven assists and three steals, despite a sluggish start in which he scored two points on 1-7 shooting in the first half.

Guard Parfait Bitee picked up the offensive slack for Robinson in the first, scoring all 11 of his points in the half. "Parfait played solid, he played under control and very poised," said Baron.

J.R. Moore came off the bench with a lot of intensity, energizing the crowd with a monstrous put-back dunk off a Kahiem Seawright miss. While Robinson may have shone in the final moments, great team defense was the key to the Rams victory last night.

The Rams forced 15 turnovers, and outscored UMass 21-8 in points off turnovers. The Rams also dominated the Minutemen in bench points, outscoring them 16-3.

Baron described this as a "great team victory." In addition to the great team play, the Ryan Center's crowd of 5,032 played a major role in the game.

Robinson said, "The whole game the crowd was intense, and we just wanted to leave victorious." Baron also addressed the crowd afterwards, thanking them for their support throughout the game.

However, the Rams will not be able to rely on the home crowd for support Saturday afternoon, as they travel to Washington D.C. to face George Washington.

Robinson, who has been beaming with confidence lately after three-straight great performances, will need to play a major role in the contest if they want to derail the division-leading Colonials.

"We are just trying to pile up as many wins as possible this time of the year, and we are looking to get a win at GW," he said.

With a win on Saturday, the Rams will move into a tie for first place in the A-10.

UMass suffers: Robinson rescues URI
By John Connolly, The Boston Herald, 1/26/2006

KINGSTON, R.I. Rhode Island fans are used to having their blood pressure checked before traipsing through the Ryan Center turnstiles. No wonder, considering that for 11 straight seasons, URI has either won 20 games or lost 20 games.

Entering last nights 58-55 victory over UMass, URI fans were accustomed to more of the same after the Rams opened the season at 5-1, then went 1-5 in their next six before extending the current win streak to 5-0. Too bad for UMass that last nights contest wasnt the sixth game in the latest link.

To the Minutemens credit, they nearly ruined URIs mathematical scheme of things when junior forward Rashaun Freeman (14 points) made a layup with 10 seconds remaining to bring UMass all the way back from 10 point down.

URI took possession and the ball wound up in the hands of senior guard Dawan Robinson (14 points), who calmly sank a 23-foot jump shot with three seconds on the clock to cement the win.

I just tried to get the right spot and get the ball off, said Robinson, who was held to 14 points after averaging 23 per game last week on his way to earning conference player of the week honors. I looked at the time. I knew you only need three seconds to get the ball up the floor. I tried to take my time and pick the right spot. I knew it was going to go in.

The stats were fairly even. URI shot 36 percent to 34 for UMass, and the Rams (11-6, 5-1 Atlantic 10) outrebounded the Minutemen (9-7, 4-2) by a 42-39 margin.

One category on the scoresheet revealed UMass problem last night: turnovers. The Minutemen coughed up the ball a dozen times in the first half, leading to a 28-22 Rams lead. URI scored 21 points off 15 UMass turnovers.

That put us in a hole, Minutemen coach Travis Ford said. Thats why we preached about it. Ill be darned, that was pretty much my whole halftime speech. We cleaned it up in the second half.

A Robinson 3-pointer with 10:37 remaining put the Rams up by 10. But Jeff Viggiano (14 points) and James Life (13 points) were brilliant down the stretch for the Minutemen.

Freemans bucket gave the visitors a chance at 55-all. Then Anderson stepped up.

Big-time players make big-time plays, Ford said.

URI deflates UMass
Robinson shot derails comeback
By Christopher L. Gasper, The Boston Globe Staff, 1/26/2006

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Maybe UMass shouldn't make those NCAA Tournament plans just yet.

Following a resounding 60-34 victory over Temple last Saturday, the Minutemen appeared to have turned the corner. But as has been the case since the departure of John Calipari, UMass is just running in place.

The Minutemen took a step back toward also-ran status last night, dropping a 58-55 decision to Rhode Island at the Ryan Center, despite a valiant comeback.

Rhode Island's Dawan Robinson drilled a pull-up 3-pointer with just three seconds left to secure the victory. UMass (9-7, 4-2 Atlantic 10) had rallied from as many as 10 points down in the second half to tie the game at 55 with 10 seconds left.

''Give them a lot credit. They withstood a big run there by us at the end," said first-year UMass coach Travis Ford. ''Sometimes it can be very deflating when you have a lead and another team comes back like that, but they didn't let it bother them. Big-time players make big-time plays and I think Dawan Robinson is a big-time player."

It was a bitter defeat for the Minutemen, who seemed out of synch on offense all night, shooting just 21 of 59 from the floor, but battled back to tie the game on a Rashaun Freeman reverse lay-up with 10.6 seconds left. The hoop came after URI turned the ball over up 2 points, when Jimmy Baron couldn't handle an inbounds pass.

That became a moot point when Robinson, who scored a team-high 14 points, took matters into his own hands.

''When I got the ball, first I looked at the clock and I knew we had a lot of time," said Robinson. ''It only takes three seconds to get down the floor and make a shot. I just tried to take my time, not make any turnovers, and pick the right shot. I knew it was going to go in. It was just one of those shots."

UMass seemed as though it was headed for a loss when it trailed, 51-42, with 2:38 left, but junior guard James Life came to life to resurrect the Minutemen's chances. Life, held scoreless in the first half, scored 8 of his 13 points in the game's final 3:08 and drilled a pair of big 3-pointers to keep UMass alive.

Rhode Island's poor free throw shooting down the stretch gave UMass a chance in a game in which it never looked comfortable. Jeff Viggiano (14 points) cut the URI lead to two (55-53) with a long 3-pointer from the top of the key with 16.6 seconds left, setting up the game's final plays. But the UMass comeback turned out to be for naught when Robinson won it for Rhode Island (11-6, 5-1) with his long-range jumper.

Both teams knew the importance of the Atlantic 10 clash. The winner would have at least a share of second place in the A-10, a conference that has only one true NCAA Tournament lock, George Washington, which is ranked No. 14 in the Associated Press poll. Also, with a win, the Minutemen would have been off to their best start since 1997-98, when UMass jumped out to an 11-5 record under Bruiser Flint.

The Minutemen came with a plan: to pound the ball inside. The strategy may have been sound, but the execution was not. UMass came out cold, missing seven of its first 10 shots, and turning the ball over too often. UMass trailed 28-22 at the half, as URI turned 12 first-half Minutemen turnovers into 15 points. Rams guard Parfait Bitee scored 9 of his 11 points right before the half, as Rhode Island turned a 17-17 tie into a 6-point halftime lead.

For the game, Rhode Island generated 21 points off UMass turnovers and allowed just 8 points as a result of its 12 miscues.

''We wanted to be aggressive," said URI coach Jim Baron. ''We saw what they did against Temple, so we felt that we needed to use our athletic ability against their guards and I thought we did a good job doing that. We wanted to force the issue. "

Rams edge UMass
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/26/2006

KINGSTON, R.I. - Loss No. 7 followed a familiar script for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team Wednesday night at the Ryan Center.

Dawan Robinson's 3-pointer with three seconds left gave the Rams a 58-55 win over the Minutemen and sole possession of second place in the Atlantic 10.

With one minute, 13 seconds remaining, the prospect of needing a game-winning shot seemed almost silly. Stephane Lasme had just missed two free throws and a layup by Jamaal Wise seemed to clinch the win for the Rams who led 53-45.

But after a 3-pointer by James Life, Wise missed the front end of a one-and-one to leave the score 53-48 with 43.2 seconds left. UMass tried to find Life again, but settled for a Chris Lowe floater with 28.4 seconds that made it 53-50.

Robinson made both free throws at the other end, but Jeff Viggiano's long 3-pointer cut the lead to two points with 16.6 seconds left as UMass called time-out. Jimmy Baron raced back to take the inbounds pass for URI, but it skipped off his hands and out of bounds to give UMass possession.

Rashaun Freeman was surprisingly free on the block and the Minutemen got him the ball. He laid it in with 10 seconds left, tying the game at 55-55.

'When he hit that shot, I said 'Oh man,' Robinson said. 'But we had to keep going.'

URI hustled the ball up the floor and Robinson got a clean look.

'Big-time players make big-time plays,' UMass coach Travis Ford said. 'I think Dawan Robinson is a big-time player.'

Chris Lowe raced up the court, but his 23-footer was too strong.

The Minutemen (9-7, 4-2 Atlantic 10), who suffered a similar disappointment against Saint Louis, were frustrated.

'You never want to lose on a last-second shot and that's the second time it's happened to us this year,' Life said. 'We could be 6-0 (in the A-10) right now.'

'The solution is not to get down like that late,' Ford said. 'Give Rhode Island credit - they withstood our run at the end. We played hard. We didn't play particularly well, but we didn't play well because Rhode Island got after us.'

The Minutemen stay on the road for two more games beginning Sunday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Philadelphia to face La Salle.

Freeman and Viggiano each had 14 points to lead the Minutemen. Freeman added 10 rebounds, but struggled from the field shooting 5-for-16. Life scored 13, including 11 in the final six minutes.

Lasme had seven blocked shots, but Ford said he was concerned about his overall play. Lasme scored five points and had six rebounds.

'Look at his stats,' Ford said. 'He gets the blocked shot column pretty full, but we need to get some other columns filled up for him.'

Robinson's 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds paced the Rams (11-6, 5-1 A-10). Will Daniels added 11 points.

Like most recent UMass-URI meetings, the game featured all the grace of a rock fight with a collection of turnovers, fouls and missed shots on both sides. Bad blood from trash-talking and shoving behind the play could make for a heated rematch in Amherst Feb. 4.

The Minutemen got behind with 12 first-half turnovers that contributed to a 28-22 halftime deficit. Free-throw shooting (7-for-13) throughout the game also hurt.

The turnovers 'put us in a hole. That's what I preached about and preached about because that's what happened at Saint Louis. That was pretty much my whole halftime talk,' Ford said. 'I don't talk a whole lot about free throws, but that was unacceptable. We'll do better.'

Viggiano said this loss makes Sunday's game more important.

'We have to bring more focus and more energy. We can't sleep the first 30 minutes of the game,' he said. 'It's very frustrating. We really have to steal this La Salle game coming up. That's a big game for us.'

Top Florida guard headed for Minutemen
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/26/2006

KINGSTON, R.I. - University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Travis Ford still has two scholarships to fill for the 2006-07 season, but he appears to have added his second recruit for the 2007-08 season.

Joey Rodriguez, a 5-foot-10 junior point guard from Winter Park, Fla., has told several recruiting publications that he plans to attend UMass. Rodriguez joins guard Marcus Matthews, a junior at Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., who verbally committed to the Minutemen in October.

Rodriguez, who is averaging 19 points per game, is rated among the top high school players in Florida.

While commitments from juniors can sometimes be tenuous, Ford appears to have a head start on what could be a big class as Rashaun Freeman, Stephane Lasme, James Life, Brandon Thomas and Maurice Maxwell will all be out of eligibility.

Maxwell's scholarship could be available sooner because he has been suspended for failing to meet athletic department academic standards. His return is questionable.

UMass also could land its first Bay State player in recent years. Chris Donald, a 6-foot-4 senior guard from Boston who is averaging 25 points per game at Catholic Memorial, said he plans to attend UMass.

Donald has been recruited by several Division I schools including South Florida and Central Connecticut. He would technically be a walk on for his first season at UMass and would not count against the team's scholarship total next season.

His mother is a state employee at Roxbury Community College, which entitles him to a considerable discount at state schools. He expects to get a scholarship his second year.

''I'll probably redshirt my freshman year, which would be better for me than to go to prep school, so I'll already be familiar with the offense,'' said Donald, who was at UMass' 60-34 win over Temple Saturday. ''I think I'll fit well into the offense at UMass.''

Mo Vasquez, Donald's AAU coach at Metro Boston, said that Donald would be a good fit at UMass.

''He's got a great perimeter game. He goes to the cup aggressively,'' said Vasquez, who coached ex-UMass great Monty Mack early in his AAU career. Donald ''has a ton of upside. He's going to get a lot better. He works hard and does everything he needs to do.''

UMass was briefly in the running for Dexter Gray, the sophomore forward who just announced he was transferring from St. John's, but it appears that he's headed to Iona. Gray is a graduate of Mount Vernon (N.Y.) High School, the same program that produced UMass point guard Chris Lowe. Gray scored eight points against the Minutemen at the Holiday Festival in December.

NEW TV DEALS - The Atlantic 10 announced one new TV deal and extended another beginning next season.

ESPN or one of its affiliates will continue to broadcast selected regular season men's and women's basketball conference games, the conference championship game and potentially other tournament games through the 2009-10 season.

And the Atlantic 10 became the first conference to affiliate itself with CSTV since the college-only network was purchased by CBS. The league and the network signed a deal through the 2010-11 season.

As part of the agreement, CSTV will take over the Atlantic 10 network which broadcasts the conference's men's and women's basketball. It did football games as well, but the Atlantic 10 isn't empowered to make a long-term football deal because the Colonial Athletic Conference is taking over A-10 football beginning in 2007.

The agreement with CSTV covers all conference-related media and marketing rights, including television, radio, video-on-demand, Internet, broadband and wireless.

NEXT UP - The Minutemen stay on the road, heading to Philadelphia for two games. They will face La Salle at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Explorers (10-7, 2-4 A-10) fell at Penn 73-65 Wednesday.

MILESTONE - Lasme's seven blocks gave him 75 this year, which is already the school's No. 4 single season total ever. Marcus Camby has the top three.

Lasme now has 198 in his career, fourth best in school history. He needs just six to catch Lari Ketner at 204.

Freeman's 14 points gave him 1,119, putting him three behind No. 27 Mike Williams on the UMass career scoring chart.

LIFE NO. 5 - After switching to No. 34 for Saturday's game against Temple, Life was back wearing No. 5 because his maroon No. 34 jersey hasn't arrived yet.

MISCELLANEOUS - Former Rhode Island assistant coach and UMass player Tyrone Weeks attended the game.
