n the wake of his team's latest heartbreaking loss, a 72-71 defeat at the hands of Charlotte on Wednesday, Massachusetts men's basketball coach Travis Ford went searching for answers as to why his team has seemingly been unable to pull out close games. Ford, however, wasn't able to find any magic solutions that will result in UMass (11-13, 6-7 Atlantic 10) finally getting the breaks in tight contests.
"Believe me, I've talked to a lot of coaches in the last six hours and they just say, 'Hopefully, eventually you'll get them back,'" Ford said prior to Thursday's practice. "It's part of any sport. We're right there. We're close, but these [losses] have been against very good teams.
"It's nothing we're doing down the stretch," he added. "There's some things we can do throughout the game, like not turning the ball over and making our foul shots, but I don't think it's anything down the stretch that we need to change."
UMass is 1-6 in games decided by three points or less this year, and despite the obvious frustration caused by so many tight losses, Ford is trying to keep his team's focus on finishing the season strong.
"There's no question it's frustrating, but I'm proud of how hard our kids are working and competing," Ford said. "We have to keep our eye on the ball and understand that there's still a long season left. There's still some games that we need to take care of. You can only control your future, you can't control the past."
The Minutemen have three games remaining in the regular season, beginning with a noontime clash with Dayton tomorrow at the Mullins Center. The Flyers (13-14, 5-8 A-10) have struggled away from home, as they are 0-6 in road games against A-10 opponents, and just 1-8 overall.
Ford can certainly relate to Dayton's road struggles, as UMass is 3-11 away from the Mullins Center this year.
"We've played one of the toughest road schedules in America," Ford said. "Our team has been presented with some challenges that I don't necessarily know that we were ready for or were good enough to overcome this year.
"We have to stay positive and be realistic with what our team is presented with," he continued. "This is a year where we're really learning a lot about ourselves and about the system, and hopefully it will make us better in the future."
While UMass has not gotten many breaks throughout the season, Ford still believes his team poses a threat in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which begins on March 8 in Cincinnati. The Minutemen are currently tied for eighth place in the bunched up A-10 standings, and Ford knows it will be important for his team to build some momentum heading into the wide open tournament.
"You want to be playing well going into the tournament," Ford said. "That's what it's all about, especially when you're in the position we're in - right in the middle of the pack. We've shown that we can compete with any of these teams. The top three teams in this league [George Washington, Charlotte and St. Louis] have beaten us by a combined six points."
Tomorrow's game should offer a considerable home court advantage for the Minutemen, who are 8-2 at Mullins Center this year, as a large crowd is expected to be on hand for the dedication of the court to the late Jack Leaman, the legendary UMass coach and broadcaster.
"Hopefully there will be a lot of fans here and it will be a great day to honor Jack Leaman and his family," Ford said. "Hopefully it will just be an overall great day and we finish it up with a win."
MHERST -- Not many of the current University of Massachusetts men's basketball players had a chance to meet Jack Leaman. They know the beloved former coach and broadcaster only through his reputation and stories about him.
But senior Jeff Viggiano had got to know Leaman well, before the coach died of a heart attack March 6, 2004. Viggiano said he was glad he will be in the building Saturday when the Mullins Center basketball court is officially named for Leaman at halftime of the game with Dayton which starts at noon.
'It's probably extra special for me,' Viggiano said. 'I got pretty close to him. He was at every practice and always traveled on the bus. I always thought of him as the grandfather of our team. This will be a nice day' Saturday.
Most of Leaman's high-profile former players and proteges in coaching are involved in their own seasons and won't be at the ceremony. UMass expects a good crowd, including former players as well as his countless other friends in the area.
John Calipari, Julius Erving, Bruiser Flint, Al Skinner, and Rick Pitino will have a presence. All five recorded messages for the halftime video presentation. Chancellor John V. Lombardi and Leaman's widow Rita will make remarks as well.
A decal will be placed on the court for the remainder of the season. A permanent Leaman Court logo will be painted on the floor beginning next season.
Current UMass coach Travis Ford said he learned about Leaman from Pitino, his coach at Kentucky.
'Coach used to talk about him all the time. How much he learned from him and how he shaped his career,' Ford said. 'Once I got here I realized, it's not about his coaching, it was about how much people loved him and how much he meant to people as an individual. I've not been too many places where I've seen someone loved and adored as much as Jack Leaman is here.'
While the game seems almost secondary in the eyes of many UMass fans, it could go a long way in determining seeds for the Atlantic 10 Tournament which starts March 8. Both teams are bunched in the crowded middle of the conference standings.
It's been a down year for the Flyers, who at 13-14 (5-8 Atlantic 10) are in danger of ending their six-year streak of seasons above .500. The road has been particularly tough for the Flyers. Including two neutral site games, they are 1-10 away from UD Arena and 0-6 in Atlantic 10 road games.
But Brian Gregory's squad arrives in Amherst winners of two of its last three, including Tuesday's 66-62 win over Xavier at home.
'This is a team coming in with some renewed confidence,' Ford said. 'They're really trying to build off that Xavier game. While we're coming in off a disappointing and frustrating loss, they're coming in on a big time high.'
The Flyers are healthier than they've been in awhile as Monty Scott is back in the starting lineup after missing five games earlier this month.
Scott, a junior forward, is the team's No. 2 scorer at 10.8 points per game behind only sophomore guard Brian Roberts (16.7 points).
'He's one of the best players in the league,' Ford said of Roberts. 'He scores in so many ways. He's tough to stop. He can score off the dribble and they use 10,000 screens to get him open. He's a really, really good basketball player.'
Despite starting a lineup with nobody taller than 6-foot-7, the Flyers are the No. 3 rebounding team in the Atlantic 10. Norman Plummer leads Dayton with 6.8 rebounds per game.
OTHER TEAMS PLAY - The men's basketball team is one of three Minutemen squads playing at home Saturday.
Because of predicted snow, the men's lacrosse game against Hofstra was moved up from 2 p.m. to noon.
The hockey team plays Northeastern at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
NOTES - Stephane Lasme needs three blocked shots to become the second player in UMass history to block 100 in a season. Marcus Camby accomplished the feat all three seasons he was a Minuteman. Lasme is third all-time at UMass with 220 blocks, and three would move him ahead of Harper Williams (222). Camby is the all-time leader with 336.
Five points would move Rashaun Freeman up two spots on the school's career scoring list. Currently at No. 21 with 1,207 points, Freeman is just behind Jim Town and former teammate Anthony Anderson who each scored 1,211 in their UMass careers.
Dayton is the conference opponent with the longest winning streak against the Minutemen of five straight.
Ford has beaten Dayton before. His Eastern Kentucky team beat the Flyers 73-66 to open the 2004-05 season.

MHERST, Mass. - Junior Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) posted a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds and junior James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) tied his career-high of 25 points to lead UMass past Dayton 66-47 on the newly dedicated Jack Leaman Court in the Mullins Center on Saturday. At halftime, UMass held a ceremony dedicating the court to former coaching legend and Hall of Famer Jack Leaman. The Minutemen responded by overcoming a three-point deficit at intermission going on a 19-to-6 run to start the second half and pull away for the win.
UMass (12-13, 7-7 Atlantic 10) pulled back to .500 in conference play, while Dayton fell to 13-15 overall, 5-9 in the Atlantic 10 losing its fourth consecutive road game.
Life shot 9-for-19 from the floor canning five three-pointers. He finished the day with five rebounds, five assists and no turnovers.
As a team, UMass turned the ball over just nine times total in the contest - improving the Minutemen to 6-0 on the season when they commit fewer than 13 turnovers in a game. Along with protecting the ball today, Umass was able to use its defense offensively outscoring Dayton 15-to-3 in points off turnovers.
The inside game worked well for the Minutemen as junior Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) added nine points and senior Jeff Viggiano (Suffield, Conn.) scored eight. Lasme passed Harper Williams for second-place all-time in blocked shots for UMass as he picked up four today. For his career, he has 224 swats - 101 of those coming this season. He is now just the fourth player in UMass history to block over 100 shots in one season.
Warren Williams scored 13 to lead the Flyers as the only Dayton player to reach double-figures on the afternoon.
Both teams played evenly in the first half with Dayton holding the slight advantage at the break with a 29-26 lead. The Minutemen came out firing, though, in the second half going on a 19-to-6 run to start the second half. UMass held Dayton to just 7-of-25 shooting (28 percent) in the period, while the Minutemen were able to connect on 15-of-28 (53.6 percent) from the floor.
After leading 52-42 following an acrobatic, reverse lay-up from Viggiano with 8:09 to play, UMass began to pull away going on an 11-to-0 run sparked by four points from Life and six points from Freeman. Life found Freeman for a fast-break dunk to culminate the run giving the Minutemen their largest lead, 21, of the day, 63-42.
Freshman Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) the Atlantic 10's leader in assists had eight today while committing just two turnovers. Along with his nine from the Charlotte game on Wednesday night, Lowe has posted 17 assists in two games.
UMass returns to action on Wednesday, March 1 when the Minutemen head to Richmond for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. UMass returns home on Saturday, March 4 for its final regular season game and will face Xavier at 4:00 p.m.
Mass dedicated the court at the Mullins Center in honor of the man most synonymous with UMass basketball, Jack Leaman, who coached the team from 1966-79 before serving the athletic department in a variety of roles until his untimely death in 2004.
* UMass went on a 12-0 run early in the second half after trailing 34-30 with 18:23 left in the second half to take a 42-34 lead with 13:28 left in the half, they would never let Dayton lead again. In the run, Rashaun Freeman scored six of the 12 points.
* James Life returned to the starting line-up for the first time in five games and scored in double-figures for the 13th time this season with career-high tying 25. Life has been in double-figures in eight of the last 10 games. He is averaging 14.7 over his last 10 games.
* Life broke the 20-point make for the third time this season and second in four games after a career-high 25 at George Washington.
* Rashaun Freeman scored in double-figures for the 17th game this season and 63rd in his 82 career games. He finished with 19 points including 15 in the second half.
* Freeman had a game-high 12 rebounds to post his 11th double-double this season. He had 12 games this season with 10 or more rebounds including seven of the last 12 games.
* Stephane Lasme moved to a tie for second in career blocked shots with two in the game. He passed Harper Williams (222 in 1989-93) and now stands second with 222. Only Marcus Camby (336) has more in UMass history.
* UMass, which came into the game as the third-leading shot blocking team in the nation (7.4 bpg) swatted 11 shots. The Minutemen lead the A-10 with 188 this season. Dyaton has just 74 this year.
* Dante Milligan had a career-high four blocked shots. He previously blocked three against Saint Joseph's on Jan. 11.
* Chris Lowe had eight assists, one game after he tied his career-high with nine against Charlotte.
* UMass had a season-low nine turnovers. They had 10 against Boston University (12/12) and Duquesne (1/7).
* The game marked the fifth time UMass held its opponent below 50 points this season and ninth time below 60 points.
James Life on halftime:
Coach was angry. He was upset we were out rebounded 18-13 over all, 6-3 on the offensive end. He was mad at the big men. Stephane (Lasme) was sick so that didn't help, but was the big man show at half.
Coach Ford opening statement:
Tale of two half. I was not happy with the way we competed in the first half. They out rebounded us, and were on loose balls. This is too great of a day not t take advantage of it for a great coach and a great man. We turned it around in the second half. I'm really proud of our team today.
Ford on Leaman Legacy:
I learned a lot about him through coach Pitino. Jack helped him grow as a person as a player. It wasn't until that I got here did I really understand what he meant to UMass until I got here. When I did, I learned quickly he that he was what UMass was all about. When people like Julius Erving, Rick Pitino, John Calipari and Marcus Camby have all come through here, but when one guy stands about all these names, it really means something. I've enjoyed getting to know Rita and Laurie. I wanted to impress them and be accepted by them because they have a great love for the school and the program. I showed the players the halftime video to let them know what this program was all about. He's the face of UMass basketball. I hope to be half the coach he was. I just wish I had been around him. It's important to have that visual reminder on the court.
MHERST -- Perhaps the University of Massachusetts should have named its basketball court for Jack Leaman a long time ago. For one thing, it's a worthy tribute for a man who is the school's all-time winningest coach (217-126 over 13 seasons in the 1960s and '70s).
For another, putting his name on the court might bring some of the magic back to a program that hasn't seen the postseason in six years.
During a halftime ceremony yesterday at the Mullins Center that included an appearance by one of Leaman's most notable protgs, John Calipari, the court was indeed dedicated to a man whose name was synonymous with UMass sports for more than 40 years until his death in March 2004. After the ceremony, the Minutemen returned to the newly christened surface trailing Dayton, 29-26. They proceeded to put together perhaps their best half of the season, shooting 53.6 percent, committing just two turnovers, and blowing past the Flyers, 66-47.
''This was too great of a day not to take full advantage," said UMass first-year coach Travis Ford. ''We didn't want to be the ones to spoil it."
Thanks to James Life (25 points) and Rashaun Freeman (19 points, 12 rebounds), the party wasn't tarnished.
''I knew this was a great day for UMass," said Freeman, a junior who got to know Leaman in his first season when the former coach worked on the radio broadcast team. ''He gave me so much in such a little time."
The Leaman legacy was honored with a video tribute at the half, including testimonials from former players Julius Erving, Al Skinner, and Rick Pitino. Pitino's 1996 Kentucky team knocked off UMass's greatest squad in the national semifinals, the last Minuteman game coached by Calipari. Yesterday, Coach Cal jetted up from Memphis to attend the ceremony. ''Jack deserves it," Calipari said, ''and I just wanted to make sure I was here."
Calipari left after halftime, because his fourth-ranked Tigers had a game last night against Tulsa. He had arranged to have two planes available at Westover Air Force Base -- in case one had mechanical difficulties.
As for the Flyers, they basically took off after halftime as well, shooting just 28 percent after intermission, and falling to 13-15 (5-9 in the Atlantic 10).
UMass (12-13, 7-7) plays at Richmond Wednesday, before returning to Jack Leaman Court for its regular-season finale Saturday against Xavier.
''He's what UMass basketball is about," Ford said of Leaman. ''He is the face of UMass basketball. And that says a lot when you've had guys like Julius Erving walk through this campus, and Rick Pitino, Marcus Camby, and John Calipari. When one other guy stands above all the rest -- with those names -- you know you've accomplished something."
MHERST, Mass. | The roof fell in on the Dayton Flyers on Saturday afternoon.
It wasn't from the weight of the snow that blanketed the Mullins Center on the University of Massachusetts campus. It was from the pressure applied by the Massachusetts Minutemen.
After trailing, 29-26, at the half, UMass outscored Dayton 40-18 in the final 20 minutes to flatten the Flyers, 66-47. It was the worst beating Dayton has taken all season, rivaled only by the losses to Miami University and Cincinnati.
The Flyers couldn't function against the UMass defense in the second half, and the Minutemen ripped the Dayton defense to shreds. James Life scored 25 points, mostly from the perimeter, and Rashaun Freeman punished the Flyers with 19 points in the paint for UMass.
Point guard Warren Williams, who had 13 points, was the only UD player in double figures as UMass succeeded in holding UD leading scorer Brian Roberts to nine points.
With UMass playing suffocating defense, Dayton had two five-minute scoring droughts in the second half. That happened not only because the Flyers shot 28 percent in that period but because the Flyers made only 6 of 17 free throws.
"We're a good free throw shooting team," UD coach Brian Gregory said. "That's an indication of our concentration level. We didn't concentrate well enough. Why is that? I don't know."
MHERST, Mass. | It wasn't James Life's plan to have a big scoring day for Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon.
"I just wanted to come out and stop (Brian) Roberts," Life said after UMass dumped Dayton, 66-47. "That was the only thing on my mind."
Life not only held UD's Roberts to nine points, but he scored 25 to lead the Minutemen.
"He was face-guarding me, not worrying about anything else," Roberts said. "When I got the ball, he was into me."
UMass, which has been making far too many turnovers lately, committed only four of its 11 in the second half, during which the Minutemen outscored Dayton, 40-18.
"When we take care of the ball and rebound, we can beat anybody," said UMass forward Jeff Viggiano.
Road too tough
UD coach Brian Gregory said the Flyers lack someone who can take over the team when it encounters difficult situations on the road.
"At home it's easier," he said. "On the road it takes a little extra toughness. To be honest with you, on the road we haven't demonstrated that we have that toughness for a 40-minute stretch."
The Flyers' record away from home this season is 1-11.
Ford knows Dayton
Saturday marked the first time Travis Ford faced Dayton as the UMass coach, but the former University of Kentucky star coached against UD twice while at Eastern Kentucky. His EKU Colonels lost an 82-70 decision to the Flyers on Dec. 8, 2001, and upset Dayton, 73-66, in the 2004-05 season opener at UD Arena.
Gregory is now 2-1 against Massachusetts.
UMass wins in paint
UD forward Norman Plummer made only 2-of-13 shots as he had difficulty functioning against the UMass big men.
"They blocked a lot of shots today," Plummer said of the Minutemen's 11 blocks. "When they have shot blockers, you gotta go right at them. We didn't do that today.
"Coach challenged us at halftime. He knew they were going to come out hard. We didn't step up to the challenge."
Familiar face
One of the spectators at Saturday's game was former Flyer Mark Jones, who is from Taftville, Conn., about an hour away from Amherst. Jones, who graduated last year, is working at his old high school, Norwich (Conn.) Free Academy. The parents of the Flyers' Nick Stafford and Roberts also were in attendance. The Staffords live in nearby Springfield, Mass.
UMass honors coach
In ceremonies at halftime, the court at the Mullins Center was named in honor of Jack Leaman, who coached the UMass men's basketball team from 1966-79 and the women's team in 1986-87. Leaman also served as assistant coach and radio broadcaster until his death on March 6, 2004.
Leaman coached Basketball Hall of Famer Julius Erving, Louisville head coach Rick Pitino and Boston College head coach Al Skinner.

Stephane Lasme's new look.

Jack Leaman (from the Al Skinner number retirement ceremonies) on the new video boards.

Seated in the front row: UMass Chancellor John Lombardi, Jack's daughter Laurie and wife Rita, former coach John Calipari, Athletic Director John McCutcheon.

Rita Leaman addresses the crowd.

An image of Leaman from his coaching days appears on the video boards.
