Play by Play
hile Massachusetts men's basketball coach Travis Ford has not been able to institute an up-tempo style of play with his team this year, the Minutemen will look like a veritable run-and-gun squad compared to tonight's opponent, the Richmond Spiders.
UMass (12-13, 7-7 Atlantic 10) travels to Virginia to face the Spiders (11-16, 4-10 A-10) tonight at 7:30, and it's safe to say that the matchup will not resemble a track meet.
The Spiders are coached by Chris Mooney, a Princeton alum, who employs the style of play his alma mater made famous. While the Spiders have not had a great deal of success in the win-loss column, they certainly have been effective in slowing down the pace of the game.
Richmond leads the A-10 in scoring defense, allowing just 57.8 points per game, but is also by far the worst scoring team in the conference at 51.1 points per game, an average of 10.1 points lower than the next closest team.
All of this leaves Ford with the dilemma of whether to make adjustments to combat this slower style of play, or to prepare for the Spiders like every other opponent and hope to escape Richmond with a victory.
"It is so hard, especially this late in the year, to have to change your whole look on defense, which is what you have to do against Richmond," Ford said. "They go against everything that we try to do.
"It's a very tough scouting report for this late in the year. I don't even know how to run their offense [because] it's so complicated. We don't want to get overly worked up with how they play; we need to really concentrate on us."
Ford does concede that Richmond will force his team to make some adjustments, but says with the game coming at the end of the season it is too late to change very much.
"We'll make adjustments like always, but we don't want to change that much at this time of the year," Ford said. "If this was one of the earlier games in the conference [schedule], it would have been easier, but this late in the conference we're really set in our way of how we want to do things. I'm concerned if we change too much, then we have to turn around and play Xavier [Saturday] and go back to the way we play."
One area that Ford has emphasized in every game is taking care of the ball, and while the Minutemen's 16.8 turnovers per game are the worst in the A-10, they committed a season-low nine in a 66-47 win over Dayton on Saturday. Cutting down on turnovers will be even more important against a Richmond team that limits opponents' possessions.
"Rebounding and turning the ball over are going to be big keys in the basketball game," Ford said. "Every time you touch the ball you have to make sure you get something good because possessions are few and far between. You're going to go down and defend for 20-25 seconds easily, usually 30 seconds, so you can't come down and let them off the hook defensively."
UMass will look to keep junior Rashaun Freeman involved offensively, as the star center is coming off his best week of the season, being named Co-Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. It was the first time this season that Freeman has received the award, and it came on the heels of a three-game stretch in which he averaged 18.7 points and 13.0 rebounds.
"I liked the aggressiveness he played with in the second half against Dayton," Ford said. "It's all in the mentality of Rashaun - it's up to him. What mentality he brings to that particular game is going to decide how well he plays."
Another key for the Maroon and White will be jumping out to an early lead, as the ball control system that the Spiders play makes it difficult for them to score points in bunches if they fall behind.
"You don't want to get down," Ford said. "If you get down double-digits against a team like that, it's tough because then they really control the game with their offense. You try to keep the game as close as you can so you can have a chance to come back. I've seen as well, if you can get a good lead on a team like that, it's tough for them to come back and score quickly because it's not in their nature."
Richmond enters tonight's game on an eight-game losing streak, but have been a far better team at home this season, posting a 9-5 record at the Robins Center, compared to just 2-11 away from campus.
"They've struggled on the road, but they've been pretty good at home," Ford said "We've broken down their percentages at home and away, and their percentages at home are so much better. They shoot much better at home."
fter five months of trying to perfect playing one way, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team has spent the last two days preparing an almost totally different style for tonight's game at Richmond which starts at 7:30.
The Spiders are one of a few teams nationally that play the slow-down, back-door cutting style usually called the ''Princeton offense,'' in honor of former Tiger coach Pete Carril.
''It's so hard, especially this late in the year, to change your whole look on defense which is what you have to do against Richmond,'' UMass coach Travis Ford said. ''You can't get out in the passing lanes and deny and be aggressive which is what we like to do.''
Ford said he can't use the Minutemen's scout team, made up primarily of transfers Gary Forbes, Luke Bonner and Etienne Brower, to mimic the Spiders.
''You can put them in positions to do it, but they can't learn their offense in one or two days,'' Ford said. ''I don't even know how to run their offense, it's so complicated.''
While Ford doesn't enjoy coaching against it, he's had some success against a similar system.
At Eastern Kentucky, ''we played against a team like this in Samford which is a mirror image of Richmond,'' Ford said. ''We had some good success against Samford. We don't want to get too overly worked up in how they play. We need to just concentrate on us a little bit.''
In UMass' 66-47 win over Dayton Saturday, the Minutemen outrebounded the Flyers and turned the ball over a season-low nine times. Ford said both trends need to continue against the Spiders.
''You have to value every time you touch the ball. You have to make sure you get something good, because possessions are few and far between,'' Ford said. ''Usually you're going to defend for 30 seconds. You can't come down and let them off the hook defensively. You better make sure you get a good shot every time down the court.''
New Richmond coach Chris Mooney looked like a magician early. Due to injuries, transfer and academic problems, he inherited a team with no natural guards, a severe disadvantage in the complicated Princeton style. But despite playing one of the league's more difficult nonconference schedules, the Spiders opened the season 11-8 including wins over Charlotte and Saint Louis.
But things fell apart from there. Richmond has lost its last eight games. Ford is quick to point out however that six of those eight games were on the road. The two losses at home were to George Washington and Xavier before the Musketeers' recent struggles.
The Spiders have ''struggled on the road, but they're pretty good at home,'' Ford said. ''Their percentages at home are so much better. They shoot much better at home.''
Not surprising given their style, the Spiders are first in the conference in fewest points allowed (57.8 per game). But they've struggled to score. Some of their 51.1 points per game can be explained by the game's slow pace, but 39.5 percent shooting will hinder any offense.
''It'll be good to be at home. We're going to get as much shooting practice as we can,'' Mooney said. ''We'll try to get the ball inside and try to take the pressure off some of our shooting.''
Richmond has struggled on the glass and handling the ball as well. The Spiders have been outrebounded by an average of 5.4 rebounds per game, and have among the most turnovers in the conference.
Senior Jermaine Bucknor leads the team at 13.3 points per game, while Kevin Steenberge is averaging 10.1 points and a team-best 4.7 rebounds per game.
NOTES: If junior Stephane Lasme gets his average of four blocked shots per game, he would match Marcus Camby's 1993-94 total of 105, the second-best single-season total in school history. Camby's 128 in 1995-96 season is the best ever for a UMass player.
Rashaun Freeman can continue to climb the school's career scoring list. He is currently No. 18 with 1,226 points, three behind Donta Bright and 10 behind Al Skinner.
The game features two of the youngest head coaches in Division I. Mooney, 33, is the seventh youngest, while Ford, 36, is the 19th youngest.
Former UMass walk-on Tim Collins will fill in for Kevin Kennedy on the UMass radio broadcast.

ICHMOND, Va. -- With playoff seeding at stake, the UMass basketball team dropped a 81-66 decision at Richmond on Wednesday night at the Robins Center. With a chance to finish as high as fifth in the league, UMass fell to 7-8 in the league and 12-14 overall. Richmond is now 12-16 overall and 5-10 in the A-10 and ended the Spiders' eight-game losing streak. The scoring output was a season-high for the Spiders.
The Minutemen were plagued by bad shooting and turnovers once again. They missed all 12 3-point attempts of the game and were held without a 3-pointer for the first time in 233 games since March 13, 1998 against Saint Louis in the NCAA Tournament. It was the first time in the coaching career of Travis Ford, spanning 265 games that his team did not make a trey.
UMass committed 18 miscues and was whistled for 29 fouls.
The second half was a parade to the free throw line. UMass was 18-of-28 from the foul line while the Spiders were 21-of-31.
Stephane Lasme and Rashaun Freeman led UMass with 16 points apiece. Lasme also had 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
Richmond had five players in double-figures for the first time all season led by seniors Jermaine Bucknor (17 points) and Kevin Steenberge (14), playing on Senior Night. The Spiders shot 57.4 from the floor and 63.6 percent in the second half.
Richmond hit 10 of its first 13 shots of the second half. Oumar Sylla landed a nifty reverse lay-up with 11:51 left in the game making it 53-35. Richmond had expanded its lead to 48-31 on a lofting 3-pointer by Drew Crank with 13:27 left in the game.
The Spiders opened the second half with an 11-4 run ending with a 3-pointer by Gaston Moliva as the shot clock expired to make is 41-26 with 15:36 left in the game.
UMass got to within four points at 22-18 with 6:32 left on a Lasme dunk, but Richmond closed out the half with more proficient shooting to lead 30-22 at intermission. UMass continued to be plagued by turnovers with 10 first-half miscues.
The Spiders continued to shoot well in the first half as they built a 17-8 lead on back-to-back baskets by Monty Sanders with 11:41 left in the first half.
Richmond jumped out to a 9-0 lead on consecutive 3-pointers by Steenberge, Bucknor and Peter Thomas in the game's first 3:27. Dante Milligan scored back-to-back baskets 21 seconds apart to get UMass on the board at 9-4. UMass committed turnovers on its first four possessions.
UMass closes out the 2005-06 regular season on Saturday vs. Xavier. Senior Day honoring Jeff Viggiano will tip-off at 4 p.m. and be televised live on the A-10 TV Network. It will be shown on Fox Sports New England in the region.
Mass was held without a 3-point field goal for the first time in 233 games, going 0-for-12 from the floor. The last time the Minutemen failed to make a triple was on March 13, 1998 in the NCAA Tournament loss to Saint Louis.
* It was also the first time in the 265-game coaching career for Travis Ford that his team did not make a 3-pointer.
* Stephane Lasme had two blocks to give him 103 blocks this season, tying for the third-best single-season in UMass history. He tied Marcus Camby's marks of 103 in 1994-95. Next on the list is Cambu's mark of 105 in 1993-94. Camby holds the all-time lead for a single-season with 128 in the Final Four year of 1995-96.
* Rashaun Freeman moved to 16th in career scoring with 16 points in the game. With 1,242 career points, Freeman moved past current Boston College coach Al Skinner (1,235 points in 1971-74) and Donta Bright (1,229 points in 1993-96).
* Freeman scored in double-figures for the 18th time this season and fourth game in a row.
* Stephane Lasme scored in double-figures for the 13th time this season and fourth time in the last five games with 16. It was his 18th career 10-plus game. He grabbed 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double this season.
Notes From Richmond
Spiders scored a season-high 81 points Wednesday night, just Richmond's second time scoring over 70 points this season. The Spiders had not scored over 60 points in their last eight games.
UMass came in allowing 62.9 points per game and had only allowed over 80 points twice this season against nationally ranked Boston College on Jan. 3 (91-62) and against UAB on Nov. 25 (86-77).
Richmond is 10-0 this season when it scores 58 points or more and 12-0 when they lead with five minutes to play.
Richmond snapped its eight-game losing streak that lasted through the entire month of February. The Spiders are 12-8 outside of the month of February this season.
The Spiders improved to 10-5 at home this season, marking the 15th season in the 34-year history of the Robins Center, that Richmond has won 10 or more games. The Spiders are 303-147 (.673) all-time in the building.
Wednesday night was deemed Senior Night as Jermaine Bucknor and Kevin Steenberge were honored before the game. The Spiders do have one more home game on Saturday night against St. Bonaventure, but the Richmond students will be on Spring Break.
This was the second time Richmond defeated Massachusetts on Senior Night. In 2004 the Spiders defeated the Minutemen 69-65.
Richmond improved to 5-1 all-time against UMass, including a perfect 3-0 in the Robins Center. This was the first of the six meetings to be decided by more than nine points.
Richmond held UMass without a 3-pointer (0-for-12) for the first time in 233 games dating back to March 13, 1988 against Saint Louis. It was the second time this season the Spiders held a team without a 3-pointer. Richmond held William & Mary to 0-for-9 shooting from behind the arc on Dec. 31.
The Spiders had five players reach double figures for the first time this season. It was the first time since a 78-71 win over La Salle on Jan. 26, 2005 that five Spiders reached double figures in the same game.
Sophomore Monty Sanders scored a career-high 12 points, making a career-high four field goals in five attempts. Fellow sophomore Oumar Sylla tied a career high with 12 points for the third time this season.
Senior Jermaine Bucknor made two 3-pointers, moving him into sole possession of sixth all-time on Richmond's all-time career list for 3-pointers. Bucknor has 146 treys which passes former teammate Jeff Myers, who made 145 from 2000-03. Bucknor has 62 trifectas this season, two behind his 2004-05 total which is tied for 10th on the school's single-season list.
Senior Kevin Steenberge made a 3-pointer for the seventh time in the last eight games and the 11th time in the last 13 games. He is second on the team with 25 3-pointers this season after only attempting one shot from behind the arc in his first three season at Richmond.
UMass entered the game leading the Atlantic 10 in blocks at 7.52 per game, but it was the Spiders who swatted the most shots Wednesday. Richmond blocked six shots, one short of its season high. The Minutemen only had three blocks.
Senior Kevin Steenberge had three blocks for the second-straight game. He has had at least three blocks in 14 games this season. Steenberge, who is second on Richmond's all-time career list with 151 blocks, moves into third on the school's single-season list with 68 swats this year. He needs five blocks to catch Tim Faulconer for second and nine to tie Johnathan Collins for the highest season total in Spider history.
Richmond made 21-of-32 free throws, tying a season high for makes and setting a new season high for attempts. UMass made 20-of-31 free throws as the two teams combined for 63 foul shots and 52 fouls.
Richmond Head Chris Mooney - On The Game
"Obviously, I think we played well. I thought our defense was terrific, especially in the first half. It was hard for them to get the ball inside to (Rashaun) Freeman and (Stephane) Lasme, who are very good players. We made it difficult for them. They got a couple in, but not nearly as many as they probably wanted. All in all, I was very pleased with the effort and it was nice to get a win and enjoy that feeling again. I hope we'll build on it and get another home win before the conference tournament."
On The Team's Shooting
"Shooting is a pretty essential thing in basketball. When you make shots, it makes things so much easier and there is so much less pressure. And we were making them tonight and I think you saw how much that helped us."
On Making Two-Point Field Goals
"They came out in a zone. We made our first nine points off of threes and, when they played man, they started to extend themselves and we were able to get some drives and lay-ups. In the second half, we were able to get the ball into the post. Those two-point baskets are good to see and are huge for us."
t was a dismal night for the Massachusetts men's basketball team (12-14, 7-8 Atlantic 10). It lost its eighth conference game in a route at Richmond last night, 81-66, and the Minutemen were dominated from the start - they gave up nine straight points to start the game, and it was downhill from there. They fell behind 20-12 midway through the first frame and that was the closest they were to the Spiders all night.
It was Senior Night for Richmond, and the Minutemen were on the receiving end of some inspired Spider basketball. There were several statistics that summed up the night: Richmond snapped its eight-game losing streak (the second time a significant streak has been snapped against the Minutemen this season), five Spider players were in double figures (the first time that's happened all season) and UMass was 0-for-12 from three-point land.
For a team that struggles on the offensive end, going 0-fer from beyond the arc doesn't help.
In the first three minutes of last night's game, the Minutemen had four turnovers, Richmond was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and the Spiders had a 9-0 lead. It was a microcosm of a night that was meant for the Richmond seniors and not for the struggling Minutemen, who didn't put up much of a fight.
The Spiders, up 30-22 on the Minutemen at halftime, steamrolled UMass at the start of the second half and scored the first two baskets for a 12-point lead. About five minutes into the second half, one sequence summed up the night for UMass: with time winding down on the Spiders' shot clock, Richmond guard Gaston Moliva found himself with the ball in the corner; he threw up a prayer from the three-point line as the buzzer sounded, and it rattled home, giving the Spiders a 41-26 lead, the biggest of the night.
Richmond's Monty Sanders hit a nifty reverse lay-up, with the foul, about five minutes into the second half, after he received the ball on a backdoor cut. The ensuing Richmond possession was another reverse lay-up off of a backdoor, and UMass coach Travis Ford was forced to call a timeout at the 11:46 mark - Ford's Minutemen were down by 18 points at that stage of the game.
Out of the timeout, the Minutemen went into a scrambling, trapping defense, trying to cause some Richmond turnovers. The Spiders were already in the one-and-one, so every UMass foul from that point on caused the clock to stop. But the Spiders hit their free throws down the stretch, rendering the fouling strategy useless.
The Minutemen started in a 2-3 zone, but after the Spiders shot the lights out early, UMass was forced into a man-to-man defense - not a good sign for a team that plays its point guard for 35-plus minutes a game.
Sophomore Dante Milligan scored the first four points for the Minutemen after the Spiders put nine on the board, but was taken out after committing a couple of early fouls.
It was 17-10 Spiders as the 10-minute mark approached.
Junior captain Rashaun Freeman scored his first bucket with 8:15 left in the first half. In the three games before yesterday's contest, Freeman was 25-for-39 from the field, but only had one shot attempt in the first 12 minutes of last night's game.
ICHMOND, Va. - University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford kept his press conference short after the Minutemen lost to the University of Richmond 81-66 Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
They played great, we didn't and that about sums it up, Ford said.
What more could he say?
Even as he was pressed to elaborate on the Minutemen's defeat by a team that lost all eight games in February and hadn't scored more than 74 points on the season, Ford's words seemed forced.
'We opened up in a zone. We were going to change defenses a lot,' Ford said. 'But our guys, they weren't ready to play. Give Richmond credit, they were ready to play - They played like a team with its back to the wall and came out ready to play. We did not.'
UMass (12-14, 7-8 Atlantic 10) quickly left the arena and headed home for a matchup against Xavier at 4 p.m. Saturday in the final regular season game at the Mullins Center.
The Spiders (12-16, 5-10 A-10) clinched a berth in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament which starts Wednesday in Cincinnati. Richmond entered the contest averaging 51.1 points and had notched more than 70 points just once. The Spiders had scored just 69 points in their last two games combined.
Stephane Lasme and Rashaun Freeman had 16 points apiece, but did most of their damage as the Minutemen attempted a comeback. Lasme, who added 10 rebounds and two blocks, was saddled with foul trouble for much of his 30 minutes.
Jeff Viggiano sounded much like his coach after the game.
'We just didn't have it tonight. We didn't come ready to play,' Viggiano said. 'Everything seemed to be going well for them and we couldn't get much going for ourselves.'
Jermaine Bucknor led five Spiders in double figures with 17 points. He was effective posting up James Life, who gave up two inches and nearly 30 pounds.
The Minutemen shot a respectable 48.9 percent from the floor, but finished 0-for-12 from behind the arc. It was the first time in 233 games that UMass failed to connect on a 3-pointer. The last time was March 13, 1998, in the NCAA Tournament against Saint Louis.
Richmond spread the floor and using the fundamentals of the Princeton offense, converted backdoor baskets and open 3-pointers after good penetration to the goal. The Spiders shot 57.4 percent from the floor and converted six 3-pointers.
'Good shooting makes the game so much easier, with so much less tension, less pressure' Richmond coach Chris Mooney said. 'You saw how much that helped us tonight.'
The Minutemen fell behind 9-0 on a trio of 3-pointers. Even then, the margin seemed insurmountable as UMass displayed no energy on either side of the ball.
The Minutemen pecked back to 22-18 after Lasme dunked with 6 minutes, 35 seconds left in the first half. But Richmond answered with three consecutive layups on backdoor cuts and held a 30-20 advantage when Bucknor drilled a mid-range jumper.
Life closed the first half with a nifty running one-hander at the buzzer and UMass entered intermission down 30-22.
In the first half, UMass committed 10 turnovers that led to 13 points for the Spiders.
The second half was brutality for many of the 3,701 observers. A total of 59 free throws were taken as 42 fouls were called, many of the feather variety.
' I was surprised that UMass was fouling with so much time on the clock,' Mooney said. 'But I think Travis Ford was on the Kentucky team that was down by 30 against LSU and came back to win the game. And maybe (fouling) is what they did. I'll have to do some research on that.'
Richmond opened the second half on an 11-6 run and led 53-35 after another backdoor layup. To their credit, the Minutemen, despite the lethargy, kept mustering a comeback because Ford kept pushing his team with presses and traps.
UMass cut the deficit to 54-41 on a layup by Viggiano with 10:11 to go. But by that time, the referees controlled the game and that limited the Minutemen's defensive aggressiveness. The Spiders hit six free throws to push the margin back to 19.
UMass made one more run at it, cutting the lead to 72-60 after Life converted a conventional three-point play.
But again, two free throws and a confident Bucknor jumper sandwiched between a missed 3-pointer and turnover by the Minutemen put the game away.

aston Moliva had the ball 22 feet from the hoop on the right wing with :03 on the shot clock early in the second half of the University of Richmond's game vs. Massachusetts last night. If this isn't the worst-case scenario for Spiders offense, it's close.
Moliva, a 6-7 rebounder/defender, had made 5 of 32 from 3-point distance this season. But this shoot-or-else jumper went in, as did so many other UR attempts in a bizarre flip of fortune. Richmond, the nation's lowest-scoring Division I squad (51.1 ppg) entering this Atlantic 10 Conference game and the outfit that failed to reach the 40-point plateau in each of its past two games, whacked UMass 81-66 before 3,701 at the Robins Center.
That's a season-high for points and plenty, as it turned out, to snap an eight-game losing streak and make Senior Night for Spiders Jermaine Bucknor and Kevin Steenberge a successful occasion. The victory locked up a spot for UR (5-10, 12-16) in next week's A-10 tournament, which includes only the top 12 of 14 league members.
The Spiders again demonstrated, especially as shooters, they play as if sprinkled with fairy dust at home, where they have won 10 of 15. On the road, UR is 1-10. Against UMass (7-8, 12-14), which is 2-11 as a visitor, Richmond hit 57.4 percent. The Spiders led 30-22 at halftime, then made 10 of their first 13 attempts in the second half to go up 53-37.
"Shooting is a pretty essential thing in basketball, and when you make shots, it's so much easier," said UR coach Chris Mooney. "There's so much less tension and less pressure on you."
Steenberge tips went in. Driving, off-balance shots by UR's Oumar Sylla went in. Jumpers by UR's Monty Sanders went in. Moliva was reliable around the hoop. Just about everybody in a Richmond un- iform snapped out of an offensive slump. Five Spiders scored in double-figures in this next-to-last regular-season game that turned into a free throw shooting orgy.
In the first half, four foul shots were taken. Second half FT total: 59. UR ended with 21 points from the line (32 tries). UMass hit 20 of 31.
Though winless in February, the Spiders came out aggressive, particularly on defense, and self-assured.

UMass failed to convert a 3-pointer (zip for 12), the first time a UR opponent had done so since 1998. Richmond's first seven shots were 3-point attempts as they attacked a 1-3-1 zone the Minutemen assumed would work against an offense that had no reason to feel confident triggering from the perimeter.
"I guess they obviously watched the Temple game," said UR guard Peter Thomas.
The Spiders shot 26.7 percent and missed 25 of 29 3-point attempts in a 69-30 loss against a 1-3-1 defense last Wednesday at the Owls court. Richmond hadn't scored less in 60 years.
"I think John Chaney will probably have a heart attack when he sees we scored 81 points," Mooney said of Temple's veteran coach.
On Saturday, Richmond lost 70-39 at Saint Joseph's, where the Spiders missed 14 of their first 15 shots from 3-point range.
This time around, the Spiders passed purposefully and hit three of their first five shots from beyond the arc to go ahead 9-0.
"Kevin hit the first one and Jermaine hit the second one, which is fitting, I guess, on Senior Night, and once you hit a few 3s, they drop out of [the zone]. We were able to run our man-to-man offense after that," Thomas said.
The Spiders entertain St. Bonaventure (2-13, 8-18) Saturday night in the final regular-season game for each team.
