he University of Massachusetts men's basketball coaching staff
thought about changing the team's flight to Dayton for Sunday's
game at 2 p.m.
Knowing they wouldn't get back until very late from Thursday's game against Fordham, the Minutemen considered switching their travel arrangements to go right from New York to Dayton.
But the weather that closed airports throughout the Northeast and threw flight schedules into chaos made it nearly impossible to restructure the itinerary for an entire travel party on such short notice.
So the Minutemen will likely be a little travel weary when they arrive at the Atlantic 10's toughest destination for a road team to win. Dayton has been idle since beating St. Bonaventure 69-62 Feb. 10.
"We probably won't get much done Friday because our guys will be mentally and physically shot," UMass coach Travis Ford speculated after Thursday's 74-59 win over Fordham. "Saturday is a travel day. But at this time of year, there's no excuses."
Sophomore point guard Chris Lowe agreed.
"It's something you've go to do. You can't run, you can't hide from it," Lowe said. "We've got to pack our bags, go to Ohio and play hard for 40 minutes."
Dayton is 16-8 overall and 6-5 in the Atlantic 10. While the Flyers are 1-8 in true road games and 1-0 at neutral sites, Dayton is 14-0 at UD Arena.
That is a streak UMass will try to break.
"It would mean something," Lowe said. "We've been hearing that's the toughest place to play in the A-10. They have a great crowd, a great arena. They play really good at home. We have to focus on their players and their style of play. If we listen to the coaching staff, we can come out on top."
Ford said being the first team to beat Dayton at home isn't a goal because the Minutemen are just trying to stay in the race for the Atlantic 10 regular-season title.
"I'll remind them how good they are at home, but that's not our motive," Ford said. "We want to stay at the top of the A-10 standings. We have to respond well after a big win which we haven't done well this year."
At 8-3 (18-7 overall) UMass is tied for second place in the conference with Xavier and is currently a half game behind Rhode Island (9-3). The Rams host Charlotte at 2 Saturday, while the Musketeers host Richmond at 6 Saturday.
UMass hasn't won at Dayton since 1999, but Ford led Eastern Kentucky to a win at the home of the Flyers to open the 1994-95 season.
"I've been to Dayton before. They're going to have 12,000 there screaming and yelling," Ford said. "My last year at EKU we went in there and got lucky with a win. It's one of the greatest college environments there is."
Dayton junior guard Brian Roberts is a lock to be an all-conference honoree and is a dark horse candidate for Atlantic 10 player of the year. He leads the Flyers with 18.5 points per game, the second most in the conference.
NOTES: Stephane Lasme needs two blocked shots to move into the top 25 all-time in NCAA history. He's tied with former Fresno State big man Melvin Ely at No. 26 with 361.
Rashaun Freeman needs five rebounds to surpass Horace Neysmith (935) at No. 3 on the UMass career rebound list.

AYTON, Ohio - UMass ended Dayton's home dominance in 2006-07, handing the Flyers their first loss after a 14-0 start at UD Arena, winning 77-69 on Sunday afternoon. The win was also UMass' first at Dayton since 1999. The Minutemen improve to 19-7 overall and 9-3 in the Atlantic 10, just one-half game behind first place Rhode Island (10-3). Junior Gary Forbes led UMass with 23 points while the senior inside force of Stephane Lasme (14 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks) and Rashaun Freeman (15 points, 12 rebounds) combined for 29 points and 24 rebounds. Each player posed his 12th double-double of the season.
UMass was able to withstand the 3-point shooting barrage by Brian Roberts, the A-10's second leading scorer, who made six 3-pointers. The Minutemen sealed the game with 1:26 as Lasme dunked in a Chris Lowe free throw miss to give them a nine-point lead, 68-59.
Roberts finished with 25 points and Charles Little tied his career-high with 21 points for Dayton (16-9, 6-6 A-10).
Dayton made a furious rush in the final minutes as they cut the lead to five at 64-59 with 2:39 left as Roberts canned a 3-pointer and Little made a runner in the lane.
UMass continued to keep its double-figure lead through a good majority of the seconmd half. The Flyers cut it to nine on a Little fast-break lay-up with 6:52 left in the game, making it 55-46 UMass. But Tiki Mayben answered on the next possession to take the lead back to 12 at 58-46.
The Minutemen hit the first two shots of the second half to take a double-figure lead again at 36-25 as Forbes hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game just 1:04 into the half.
UMass led 31-25 at halftime with Forbes scoring at will, standing with a game-best 14 points after 20 minutes, UMass controlled the glass, 23-17 with Rashaun Freeman grabbing seven rebounds.
After a Brian Roberts 3-pointer cut the UMass lead to 25-22 with 3:56 left in the first half, the Minutemen scored the next four points on Forbes and Dante Milligan lay-ups to go up by seven at 29-22 with 2:25 left.
Dayton began to hit their shots and turned up the defensive pressure to rally back to within two points at 19-17 with 5:25 left in the first half. Little and Norman Plummer were the offense for Dayton as they had 12 of the points in the 14-to-1 run.
The Minutemen played stifling defense for the first 10 minutes of the game building an 18-3 lead finished off by a Milligan lay-up. Dayton missed 11 of their first 12 shots in the game.
UMass scored the first nine points of the game shutting out the Flyers for the first 3:48 as Forbes made a 3-pointer to make it 9-0. Dayton's first score came on Little's lay-up to make it 9-2.
Mass is the first team to win at Dayton in 2006-07. The Flyers were 14-0 at home this season and riding a 14-game win streak overall.
* The Minutemen won at UD Arena for the first time since 1999. That was a 59-57 overtime win on Jan. 28, 1999.
* Gary Forbes scored in double-figures for the 12th time in 13 games. including the last six in a row with 23 points at Dayton.
* Over his last five games, Forbes has 20.6 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game.
* Forbes' 23 points tie the second-most he has scored in a game in his career. His only higher performance came at Temple last Sunday, when he had 31. He also scored 23 points at North Carolina in 2005 while playing at Virginia.
* Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme each had their 12th double-doubles of the season. Freeman had 15 points and 12 rebounds while Lasme made 14 point and 12 rebounds.
* Freeman now has 42 career double-doubles. He has also scored in double-figures in 23 of 26 games this season and in 87 of 111 career games.
* Freeman moved to third in career rebounding at UMass with 12. He passed Horace Neywmith (935) and now has 943. Only Lou Roe (1,070) and Julius Erving (1,049) have more boards at UMass.
* Lasme had his 18th game in 26 this season in double-figures and 38th of his career.
* Lasme has 20 career double-doubles.
* With his five blocked shots, Lasme now has 366 career blocked shots. In addition to leading UMass all-time, he is now tied for 23rd in career blocked shots in NCAA history. Peter Aluma, who played at American also had 366.
AYTON, Ohio - With just under three minutes left to play Sunday, fans of the Dayton men's basketball team came to life. They had watched the Flyers, who battled from behind the whole game, cut a 13-point deficit early in the second half down to five.
But University of Massachusetts senior big man Stephane Lasme quickly ended Dayton's comeback hopes. He grabbed the rebound off his own miss and put it back in. At the other end, he blocked Charles Little's shot and forced Norman Plummer into a bad-angle miss.
After Chris Lowe missed the second of two free throws, Lasme got another offensive rebound and dunked it, forcing the Flyers to call time-out. They never recovered as the Minutemen pulled away to defeat Dayton 77-69.
"That was a huge stretch. That's what we have to do," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "I was very proud of our effort. I thought we played pretty good defense and rebounding was big for us as well. Only having 10 turnovers might have been the biggest key for us. Tonight we really focused in a big game."
The victory snapped Dayton's 14-game home winning streak and kept the Minutemen in a tie with Xavier for second place in the Atlantic 10 at 9-3 (19-7 overall), just a half game behind Rhode Island (10-3).
"We want to control our own destiny," senior big man Rashaun Freeman said. "Wins like this help us separate ourselves from other teams in the league."
Junior Gary Forbes said the team is trying to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
"We came in and tried to prove something," Forbes said. "I know this will help our hopes for an NCAA at-large bid, beating a team that's undefeated at home."
Forbes continued his impressive offense with 23 points. Freeman scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, while Stephane Lasme added 14. The inside tandem each added 12 rebounds as the Minutemen outrebounded Dayton 47-35.
"I think we faced some pretty good teams, but if you look at players in the Atlantic 10, Freeman is having a player-of-the-year type year - so is Lasme," Dayton coach Brian Gregory said. "They have experience and size. They know exactly what they have to get done and do an unbelievable job rebounding their own misses."
James Life was solid guarding Brian Roberts early, but the Atlantic 10's second leading scorer broke out with 19 second-half points and led the Flyers (16-9, 6-6 A-10) with 25. Little added 21.
UMass heads home for three straight games beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday against St. Bonaventure.
Ford said he was worried that his team might come out sluggish because the Minutemen were playing their second game in four days on the road.
Instead the Minutemen, led by Forbes' torrid start, took an 18-3 lead to open the game. But Little led a 14-1 run that brought the Flyers right back.
After UMass stretched its lead back to 31-25 at halftime, an early surge after intermission brought Dayton within two at 38-36. But Freeman, free from first-half foul trouble, led the Minutemen on a 17-6 spurt that put them up 55-42 and left the Flyers in too big a hole. Dayton missed 11-of-18 free throws.
"This was the biggest game of the season," Lasme said. "To get that win, knowing they haven't lost at home was big. We needed it."
Ford said it was important to stay focused on good play.
"We're not exhaling. We exhaled after a pretty good game (against Rhode Island) and then got beat pretty good in our next game" at Temple, Ford said. "We need to hold our breath and not celebrate too much."

AYTON, Ohio - University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford said before the season that he wanted to schedule difficult games at Pittsburgh, Louisville and Kentucky to help his team be more prepared for tough Atlantic 10 road contests.
That strategy appears to be paying dividends down the stretch as the Minutemen looked unfazed by one of the nation's toughest home courts in Sunday's 77-69 win over Dayton.
Even good road teams usually lose at Dayton. The Flyers entered the game 14-0 at UD Arena this season, needing one win to tie the program's longest home winning streak of 15 set during the 1984-85 season.
UMass was at the end of a three-game road stretch. After winning at Fordham in another difficult atmosphere in a game that started at 9 p.m. Thursday, the Minutemen did not get back to Amherst until early Friday morning. After classes and practice Friday, the team flew to Ohio Saturday, where the Flyers were waiting after a week off. UMass had not won at Dayton since 1999.
"I was concerned because of our scheduling of late," Ford said. "We didn't get home until 4 a.m. Friday and got on a plane at 7 a.m. Saturday ... I was worried how we were going to start the game."
But UMass showed no signs of fatigue or intimidation and opened the game on an 18-3 run.
UMass is now 11-5 outside of Amherst, including 8-5 at opponents' arenas. The success away from Mullins is even more noteworthy considering the Minutemen were 3-13 outside of Amherst last seasons and 9-32 in the last three years.
"We know the crowd is not going to be a factor because Coach Ford prepared us with games at Louisville and Kentucky," senior big man Rashaun Freeman said. "Crowds and atmospheres don't get tougher than that. So when we play in a place like this it feels like we've been here before."
NEXT UP - UMass returns home for three straight beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday against St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies are 6-19 overall and 3-9 in the Atlantic 10. They have lost five straight, including 76-68 to Saint Joseph's Saturday. St. Bonaventure is clinging to 12th place, one game ahead of La Salle for the last spot in next month's A-10 Tournament.
CROWD - The crowd of 13,213 was the third biggest to see UMass play this season, behind the two games in Kentucky.
FORBES SURGING - Junior forward Gary Forbes, who led the Minutemen with 23 points, reached double figures for the 12th time in the last 13 games and scored over 20 points for the third time in the last four. He is averaging 21.8 points over the last four games.
MILESTONES - Stephane Lasme's five blocked shots gave him 366 in his career which extended his UMass record and moved him into the NCAA's top 25 all-time shot-blockers. He started the day at No. 26 and passed former Florida A&M standout Jerome James (363) and ex-Iowa Hawkeye and Boston Celtic Acie Earl (365) into a tie for No. 23 with Peter Aluma, who blocked 366 shots for Liberty.
Freeman's 12 rebounds gave him 943 in his career, pushing him past Horace Neysmith (935) into third place on the UMass all-time chart. Freeman, who entered the game averaging 8.2 rebounds per game would need a long stay in the postseason to catch No. 2 Julius Erving, who had 1,049 in two seasons.
MILLIGAN REBOUNDS AGAIN - Junior reserve big man Dante Milligan continued his strong play off the bench with eight rebounds after grabbing 11 Thursday at Fordham.
"Dante is starting to understand what makes him a good basketball player," Ford said. "It's not going in there trying to score. It's doing the hustle plays which will create opportunities to score. He's picking up loose balls. He's very active."
MISCELLANEOUS - UMass hit its averages with the final score. Entering the game the Minutemen were averaging 77.1 points scored and 69 points allowed. ... Former UMass women's basketball standout Melissa Gurile, who lives in the area, sat behind the Minuteman bench.

AYTON UD Arena had helped the Flyers win 14 straight home games.
But 13,213 fans Sunday couldn't aid the University of Dayton basketball team in getting enough rebounds, hitting enough free throws or stopping Massachusetts' top three players.
The Minutemen jumped on the UD men's basketball team early and snuffed every Flyer run for a 77-69 victory.
UMass improved to 19-7, 9-3 in the Atlantic 10. UD (16-9, 6-6) saw its second-best UD Arena winning streak end.
The Minutemen flew out to an 18-3 lead. The Flyers got within 19-17, 38-36 and 64-59, but each time UMass hit a big 3 or scored inside.
Any comeback hopes died via 7-of-18 shooting at the free-throw line a lower percentage than the Flyers hit in 3-pointers (10-of-19). Plus, UD was outrebounded 47-35, including 20-13 on the offensive glass.
"There's nothing sometimes more demoralizing than when you get a great defensive possession and you get a stop, and they get an easy basket on a putback," UD coach Brian Gregory said. "That's hard sometimes to overcome."
UD guard Brian Roberts hit 6-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc for a game-high 25 points. Sophomore forward Charles Little had his first double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
But those two couldn't counter Massachusetts' Gary Forbes, Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme.
Forbes (23 points) hit key 3-pointers to help end one UD threat. Freeman (15 points, 12 rebounds) had a three-point play to up UMass' lead to 41-36. Lasme had 14 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. His putbacks pushed the lead to 68-59, ending UD's home streak.
"There's no time for wallowing around," Gregory said. "We need to get back at it and get ready to play."
AYTON - After a brief moment of silence, University of Dayton men's basketball coach Brian Gregory eulogized the 14-game home winning streak.
"No. 1, it's an unbelievable accomplishment 14 straight at home," Gregory said. "No one's really ever said that. It's a helluva job because it's not like we've played bad teams during that stretch."
Massachusetts' 77-69 win Sunday at UD Arena was the Flyers first home loss since a 65-56 defeat against Rhode Island on March 4, 2006.
Since then, UD won nine home game by double digits and five by single digits. There were a couple two-point games and a three-point victory.
"You win 14 in a row anywhere, you're doing a helluva job," Gregory said. "But now we need to move on."
Little comes up big
Sophomore forward Charles Little didn't start, but he did finish well against UMass' daunting front line of Stephane Lasme and Rashaun Freeman.
Little had his first career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He added three assists and two blocks in 31 minutes.
"They're probably the two best posts in the conference," Little said. "So, we just had to battle them. We didn't battle them. We didn't show up. We didn't match their intensity. So, they kicked us on the glass. They came at us, and we kind of backed down."
High praise
While the Minutemen did win the rebounding war (47-35), Little held his own against Lasme, one of the nation's premier shot-blockers.
"I had my moments," Little said. "I think he gets most of his blocks from people trying to shy away from him, so Coach told me just to go at him, and that's what I tried to do."
Little was praised by Lasme, a senior who has seen a lot of Atlantic 10 basketball.
"He stayed aggressive the whole game," Lasme said of Little. "He went to the glass. I think if he does that all the time, he'll be a great player in this league."
Not so free throws
UD was 7-of-18 at the free-throw line, making the Minutemen's 18-of-29 mark look deadly. Brian Roberts hit 5-of-6, while the rest of the Flyers were 2-of-12.
"When you're shooting free throws, that's all it is, just mental toughness," Roberts said. "We kind of slipped on that today."
Second-half surge
Roberts scored more than 10 points in a half for the 22nd time this season. After getting six points on five first-half attempts, he finished 7-of-12 (6-of-8 on 3s) for 25 points.
"In the second half, I just kind of let it come to me and kept my energy up," Roberts said. "I don't know if they tired. I just was able to knock some shots down."
AYTON - The basketball buzz around here at least if you just go by this past weekend has moved across town.
Saturday night, Wright State drew a big crowd again, came from 12 down and won its ninth in a row its 21st overall toppling a good Cal State-Fullerton team, 77-62.
Afterward, more than two-thirds of the crowd stayed around to celebrate not only the Raiders' four seniors on Senior Night, but a team that is peaking at the right moment.
Conversely, Sunday at UD Arena even with some 3,600 more fans than were at the Nutter Center the night before the place was a morgue midway through the first half.
Massachusetts up 18-3 was manhandling the Flyers inside. On offense, UD had five turnovers, had missed 10 of its first 11 shots and, in a sign of more to come, was 0-2 at the free-throw line.
There was nothing to cheer about, and even the always raucous student section had turned into a bunch a fright-wig, face-painted wallflowers.
"We got off to a lucky start, and it gave us a little bit of comfort room so we were able to take an incredible, incredible crowd out of it a little bit," said UMass coach Travis Ford. "That was key for us.
"I've coached here before and I told our team this is one of the five best atmospheres in college basketball. I let them know Dayton was undefeated at home and it wasn't going to be easy. There aren't many tougher places to play. ... So we just had to be tougher."
They were, and that, in a nutshell, is why UMass won, 77-69.
The only Flyers players who showed themselves well Sunday were Brian Roberts whose 6-of-8 3-pointers and 25 points kept UD in the game in the second half and Charles Little, who had 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Most of Little's points came against a UMass frontcourt that is the best in the Atlantic 10 and is highlighted by 6-foot-8 Stephane Lasme. He's not only the league's best shot-blocker, his 130 rejections coming into Sunday were more than the entire team totals of 273 of the 306 schools playing Division I basketball.
"I knew I couldn't play over him, so I figured because I was a little stronger I'd just try to go through him," said the 6-6 Little, who had 30 pounds on Lasme. "Because he's got such good timing, I had to use the angles and my speed and head fakes to get him off-balance. But even so, I didn't do enough. We lost."
The Flyers now 16-9 with four tough games left had won 14 in a row at UD Arena this season. The streak ending wasn't as bothersome as the way it happened, something Flyers coach Brian Gregory pinpointed afterward.
He talked about his team's lack of focus at the free-throw line the Flyers made just 7-of-18 attempts and he especially zeroed in on the anemic effort on the defensive boards:
"They got too many easy baskets on putbacks and second efforts. There's a toughness factor involved there, and we didn't have it. You've got to change it into a street fight, and we didn't."
Yet when you saw the Flyers starting center 6-10 freshman Kurt Huelsman appear from the postgame dressing room you couldn't help but notice the four stitches in his bottom lip.
So maybe the Flyers had been tougher than you figured Sunday.
But then Huelsman explained the injury had come two days earlier when a teammate elbowed him in practice:
"I was lucky today. I didn't get hit at all."
For him and the rest of the Flyers, that was part of the problem.
ary Forbes was supposed to bring his big-game experience in the ACC with him when he joined the Massachusetts men's basketball team as a transfer from Virginia. His team-high 23 points in UMass' 77-69 win over Dayton on Sunday was just the latest example of how the junior has stepped up at the right time.
The Minutemen (19-7, 9-3 Atlantic 10) handed the Flyers their first loss at home this season, ending Dayton's 14-game winning steak at the UD Arena. UMass finished the game with three players in double figures. Seniors Rashaun Freeman (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Stephane Lasme (14 points, 12 rebounds) each recorded their 12th double-double of the season in the win.
UMass returns home from a three-game road trip to host St. Bonaventure (6-19, 3-9 A-10) tomorrow night at 7 p.m. It is the first of the final three games at the Mullins Center for the Maroon and White this season.
Dayton hadn't lost a game at home since last year, when it fell to Rhode Island, 65-56, in the last game of the 2005-06 regular season. But UMass didn't come into the game as a slouch away from home.
"I've been proud of the way we've played on the road," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "We're 11-5 on the road, which is very good, considering how many we've played."
The Minutemen are 8-5 as the visiting team, and 3-0 at neutral sites, which has been the difference from last season. UMass finished 2005-06 with a 13-15 record, with 13 of those losses coming away from the Mullins Center.
The Maroon and White has learned to embrace many hostile environments this season.
"I told our team on numerous occasions that I love going into away games," Ford said. "I'd rather have them be packed. I'd rather their fans be screaming, yelling, hollering and have that big game atmosphere. That's what you want to play in, and if you're ready for it, you prepare for it and you embrace it, it's a great scenario.
"I think our team's done a decent job up to this point of embracing that, and taking advantage of the opportunity to play in those atmospheres. Overall, our team has pretty much accepted playing in those tough environments."
UMass became the only team to embrace the UD Arena in Sunday's win, which began on an 18-3 run from the opening tip-off. Dayton (16-9, 6-6 A-10) cut the lead to just two points on a Jimmy Binnie 3-pointer with 14:36 remaining in the second half, but a 13-3 run by the Minutemen in the next four minutes disrupted any chance the Flyers had at taking a lead.
Forbes finished the first half with 14 points, as UMass took a 31-25 lead heading into halftime.
The last time Forbes scored 23 points was during his tenure at Virginia, when he dropped that same number on the Tar Heels at North Carolina in February of 2005. That was the Forbes UMass brought in as a transfer. And in the last few weeks, he hasn't disappointed.
Forbes has averaged 20.6 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game in his last five games. His 23-point effort against Dayton was the second-highest of his career - he had a career-best 31 points against Temple last Sunday.
UMass is now tied with Xavier (19-7, 9-3 A-10) for second place in the A-10. Both teams are one-half game behind first-place Rhode Island (17-10, 10-3 A-10) in the standings.
