ITTSBURGH, Pa. - After the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team spent the week trying not to look ahead to facing Pittsburgh, the Panthers are finally next on the schedule.
The Panthers (3-0) are ranked No. 4 in the country coming off last year's trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Minutemen (2-0) face them at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Pittsburgh opened the season with wins over Western Michigan (86-67) and Delaware (67-50) before Friday night's 78-52 victory over Northeastern. Pitt is 65-6 at the Petersen Events Center since the 2002-03 season and has won 45 of its last 47 regular-season nonconference games.
The Panthers are led by senior big man Aaron Gray, who averaged 13.9 points and 10.5 rebounds last year, and had 24 points and 14 rebounds in Friday's game against the Huskies.
Minuteman senior big man Stephane Lasme said he is looking forward to the matchup.
"I'm going to try my hardest to make it tough for him. I know he's going to try to make it tough for me too," said Lasme, who grinned a little as he added, "I know a little bit about him. I know he has some problems against athletic shot-blockers."
Gray and his teammates watched some of UMass' 65-56 victory over Oakland Friday.
"We watched them play a little. They're a very enthusiastic group - they're a very good team," Gray said. "It should be a good early season test."
Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon said the Minutemen were invited to this tournament to give the Panthers an early challenge.
"I know they're very experienced. They're one of the most experienced teams we'll play," Dixon said. "We know they're picked to win their league, which is one of the reasons we wanted to have them in this tournament."
UMass actually was selected to finish second in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll.
The UMass players stayed for the first half of Pittsburgh's win over Northeastern before leaving for dinner. The coaching staff stayed for the entire game as part of their preparation.
UMass junior Gary Forbes said the Minutemen would not be intimidated by Pittsburgh.
"We're excited to play every game," he said. "We were excited to play today. It doesn't matter what number they are in the country. They're just a basketball team like we are."
Sophomore point guard Chris Lowe will see familiar faces on the other bench as Keith Benjamin, his high school teammate at Mount Vernon, N.Y., Tyrell Biggs, an AAU teammate, and New Yorkers Austin Wallace, Ronald Ramon and Levance Fields all play for Pitt.
Pitt is the nation's fourth winningest program in the last five years behind only Gonzaga, Duke and Illinois.
RANKED TEAMS - The Minutemen have lost three straight against ranked opponents, falling to No. 7 George Washington, No. 11 Boston College and No. 3 Connecticut last season. Their last win against a team in the top 25 came on Jan. 15, 2005, when they upset No. 21 George Washington on the road.
PITT HISTORY - The Panthers lead the all-time series with UMass 9-4, but the Minutemen won the last two in 1994 and 1996. Pitt athletic director Jeff Long previously held the same job at Eastern Kentucky where he hired Travis Ford.
MISCELLANEOUS - UMass junior forward Etienne Brower, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury, dressed for warm-ups, but was in street clothes during the game.
Senior guard James Life declined to talk with the media after the game and said he does not plan to speak with reporters all season. He did not say why.
After shooting 75 percent (6-for-8) from 3-point range in the first half, the Minutemen shot 10 percent (1-for-10) in the second.

ITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh overcame Aaron Gray's injury and foul trouble, and the No. 4/5 Panthers used balanced scoring and a deep bench to beat Massachusetts 85-68 on Saturday.
Gray, the preseason Big East player of the year, drew his second foul 5 1/2 minutes in and didn't return until the start of the second half. But he was cut on his lower lip within seconds and needed seven stitches. The 7-footer came back with Pitt up 68-52 with 11 minutes remaining.
Despite playing only 17 minutes, Gray had 14 points and five rebounds. He was coming off a 24-point, 14-rebound game against Northeastern.
Mike Cook also had 14, Levance Fields had 13 points and five assists, Antonio Graves added 12, and Tyrell Biggs had 11 points and eight rebounds in a reserve role.
The Panthers (4-0) return eight of their top 10 players from a 25-victory team, and they relied on that depth to keep UMass from making any run to get back into the game in the second half.
Pitt has already had nine players score in double figures at least once this season. Pitt's bench outscored the Minutemen's backups 24-10.
Stephane Lasme had 17 points and nine rebounds for UMass (2-1), which was outrebounded 36-26. James Life scored 15 - all four field goals were 3-pointers - Rashaun Freeman had 14 and Gary Forbes scored 12.
Even with Gray sitting out, the Panthers scored the final seven points of the first half - Levon Kendall hit a jumper and added two free throws - to take a 46-37 halftime lead. They stretched that to 13 points early in the second half on Mike Cook's drive to the basket off Fields' pass, then held double-digit leads for most of the half. The biggest lead was 19.
The Panthers had a 14-3 run bridging the halves. Their lead ballooned to 53-40 just 2:15 into the second half as the Panthers converted a pair of UMass turnovers with a 3-pointer by Levance Fields and a break-away lay-up by Mike Cook. UMass would only get the lead to under 10 points with 1:17 left before Pitt made a bunch of free throws to secure the win.
Pitt scored the final seven points of the first half over the last 2:47 to take a 46-37 lead into halftime. The Minutemen's last score of the first half came with 3:13 left on the clock on a pair of free throws by Chris Lowe. The last basket was a 3-pointer by Forbes with 3:43 left in the half.
Pitt shot a blazing 55 percent in the first half (17-of-31) including 5-of-7 from 3-point range.
Forbes put UMass up 27-25 with an emphatic dunk with 6:48 left in the first half which forced Jamie Dixon to call timeout to regroup his Panthers.
UMass tied the game at 23 all with 10:03 left in the half as Lowe's lay-up was swatted and Pitt was called for goaltending.
Pitt went on a 6-0 run to take back the lead at 21-16 on a jump shot by Ronald Ramon with 11:26 left in the first half.
Pitt got off to a 13-8 lead in the first 4:18. UMass rallied back to take their first lead of the game at 16-15 on a Lasme lay-up and free throw with 13:38 left in the first half.
UMass pounded the ball inside and got Pitt's big man Aaron Gray in early foul trouble as he was forced to the bench just 5:26 into the game.
Both teams are playing three games in three days this weekend in the Colonial Classic, with Pitt taking on Oakland, and UMass meeting in-state opponent Northeastern on Sunday.
Mass wore its new alternate black uniforms. It is believed to be just the third time UMass has worn black uniforms in a regular season game. The last came on Feb. 6, 1996 in a 73-47 win over Fordham at Madison Square Garden. The other time was at George Washington on Feb. 4, 1995, an defeat 78-75 with President Bill Clinton in attendance.
* UMass has now lost four games in a row against ranked teams and eight games in a row against teams ranked in the top 5 of the nation.
* UMass had four players score in double-figures led by Stephane Lasme, who had 17 points. It was his second game in double-figures this season and 22nd of his career.
* Rashaun Freeman came on late to post 14 points for his 67th career game with 10 or more points in 88 career games. He shot 5-of-8 from the floor and is 22-of-30 overall this season for 73.3 percent.
* James Life has scored 15 or more in every game this season and continues to averaged 15.1 points over his last 16 games dating to last season. Life has 16 career game with 10 or more points at UMass.
* James Life shot 4-of-5 from 3-point range and is 12-of-16 this season for an amazing 75 percent.
* Gary Forbes also broke the double-figure mark with 11 in the first half and 12 total. He has scored 12 or more in each game this season and has 27 career games in double-figures.
ITTSBURGH -- When University of Massachusetts forward Stephane Lasme blocked a shot that led to an Antonio Graves 3-pointer six minutes into the second half yesterday, it showed what type of day the Minutemen had in losing, 85-68, to No. 4 Pittsburgh in round-robin play at the Colonial Classic .
The Minutemen (2-1) showed signs of hope in the first half, but could not keep up with Pittsburgh's hot shooting for 40 minutes.
"I thought we played fairly well," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "We came out and really competed the first 10 minutes of the game. We gave them everything we had."
The Minutemen held the lead on three occasions, all in the first half, but a Sam Young 3-pointer gave the Panthers a 31-29 lead, and they ran away with it from there.
Pittsburgh (4-0) took advantage of several UMass turnovers and missed opportunities in the final minutes of the first half for a 46-37 lead at the break.
UMass junior Gary Forbes looked like he was playing a game of horse with the Panthers late in the half, exchanging several jump shots and 3-pointers in the final six minutes. But Pittsburgh went on to score the final 7 points before intermission.
Pittsburgh center Aaron Gray sat out most of the game because of foul trouble, but UMass could not take advantage. Gray still finished with 14 points in 17 minutes, tied for the team high with forward Mike Cook.
"When [James] Life, [Stephane] Lasme, and [Rashaun] Freeman got in foul trouble, we couldn't score anymore," Ford said. "That's what really turned the basketball game. We just don't have enough weapons scoring-wise."
Lasme made his presence felt early in the second half, scoring the opening basket and grabbing rebounds at both ends. But Pitt converted after two UMass turnovers, and took its largest lead to that point (13). Lasme and Freeman made buckets to bring the Minutemen within 9, but the Panthers had all the answers over the final 14 minutes.
"Great teams are going to finish you out," Ford said. "I think Pittsburgh is without question one of the top teams in the country that I've seen. And it's the best team we've played in a long time."
Pittsburgh had five players score in double figures, while UMass had four. Lasme finished 7 of 10 from the field for a game-high 17 points. The Minutemen face Northeastern today at 2.
ITTSBURGH - While Pittsburgh earned its No. 4 national ranking on the strength and reputation of its big men, it was the Panthers' perimeter play that was too much for the University of Massachusetts to handle Saturday.
The Minutemen got Pitt big man Aaron Gray in foul trouble and for the most part accomplished what they wanted on defense, but the Panthers made shot after shot and UMass fell 85-68 before 10,209 fans at the Petersen Events Center.
The Minutemen (2-1) hung with the Panthers (4-0) for most of the first half. Gray and Rashaun Freeman of UMass both left the game quickly with two fouls each. The Minutemen, whose game plan was designed to put Gray on the bench, might have wished he was back out there, as his absence allowed other Panthers to shoot and they made their shots.
"I thought we played fairly well tonight," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "We ran into a great team that played great. I don't think the margin really dictated the way the game was played. Pittsburgh just shot unbelievably."
UMass actually shot well before intermission making 50 percent of its shots, and led 29-28 with 6 minutes, 16 seconds left in the first.
The Minutemen kept it close until Stephane Lasme picked up his second foul. With both its starting big men as well as James Life, who also picked up two first-half whistles, out of the lineup, UMass couldn't keep pace as the Panthers stretched their edge to 46-37.
The break didn't slow the home team's shooting as Pitt quickly increased its lead to 14 and eventually to 19. UMass cut the lead to 11 with just under three minutes left, but Pitt foul shots in the final minutes stretched the Panther advantage.
"I knew they were great players, but I didn't expect them to make that many shots," Lasme said. "They didn't miss anything."
Lasme led the Minutemen with 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Life added 15 points, Freeman scored 14 and Gary Forbes had 12.
Pitt had five players with 11 or more, led by Mike Cook and Aaron Gray, who each had 14.
The Panthers outrebounded the Minutemen 36-26 and turned 15 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points.
"Going into this game I knew this was going to be a tough challenge for us," Ford said. "But I think it's good for us. Playing one of the best teams in the country can only make you better."
UMass closes its three-game trip to Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. Sunday against Northeastern. The Huskies (0-3) are 0-2 in the Colonial Classic after a 67-52 loss to Oakland Saturday.

Big men Rashaun Freeman and Aaron Gray battle for the ball.
riday night was Aaron Gray's night for Pitt.
Last night for Pitt, it was almost everyone else's.
With Gray limited to 17 minutes because of early foul trouble and a seven-stitch cut in his lower lip, the rest of the Panthers picked up some serious slack and fended off feisty Massachusetts, 85-68, on the second day of the Colonial Athletic Association Basketball Classic at the Petersen Events Center.
Gray, Pitt's 7-foot senior center, had 24 points and 14 rebounds against Northeastern Friday night.
Last night, he played five minutes in the first half, incurring two fouls. He played the first minute of the second half, then was bashed in an under-the-basket scrum. He played the final 11 minutes, during which he scored six of his 14 points.
By then, fourth-ranked Pitt had pretty much wrapped up its fourth victory without a loss.
![]() Stephane Lasme tries to stop Tyrell Biggs. |
"I felt like I played strong," Biggs said. "[Gray] got hurt, so I tried to step up."
Biggs scored seven points in a four-minute stretch of the second half in which Pitt built a 14-point lead that carried it the rest of the way.
"Tyrell stepped up," point guard Levance Fields said. "When he plays like that off the bench, we'll be tough to stop."
"We've seen Tyrell do it, so we're not surprised," Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. "We have confidence in him. And the players have confidence in him."
Biggs has lost 20 pounds since last season -- and apparently found a new style of game.
"He's quicker," Dixon said. "He jumps better. It's not even close. He's worked hard. And he's still getting better."
Massachusetts coach Travis Ford, whose 2-1 team is picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10, said having Gray sit out so much was his team's goal. Late Friday night, the Minutemen put in three new plays designed to try to get Gray in foul trouble.
"When he went out, I said, 'OK, ' " Ford said. "And then it got worse."
The Minutemen stayed in the game and led, 29-28, with 6:16 left in the first half before foul trouble caused Rashaun Freeman, Stephane Lasme and James Life to spend time on the bench. Pitt responded, running up a 46-37 halftime lead.
"We couldn't score anymore," Ford said. "We don't have enough weapons. We didn't take advantage of [Gray's absence] because our guys got in foul trouble."
It helped Pitt, too, that it continued to shoot well.
The Panthers, who play Oakland (3-1 after its 67-52 win yesterday against 0-3 Northeastern) at 5 p.m. today, were 31 of 62 from the field -- an even 50 percent. They also were 8 for 17 from 3-point range.
"Pittsburgh just shot unbelievable," Ford said. "Some of the shots they made were incredible. That gets discouraging for the defense. After Gray left, they went on a 3-point barrage."
After Gray left, Dixon used Fields and fellow point guard Ronald Ramon as a tandem. Ramon sparked a Pitt run midway through the first half that kept Massachusetts at bay.
Massachusetts got a game-high 17 points and nice rebounds from Lasme. Life added 15 and Freeman 14.
"I thought we played fairly well," Ford said.
"I thought we really competed in the first 10 minutes. We really gave them all we've got. But, without a doubt, Pitt's one of the top three or four teams I've seen. They're the best team we've played in a long time.
"We ran into a great team that played great."
o anybody who will listen, Pitt sophomore forward Tyrell Biggs swears he hasn't lost any weight.
He's not any quicker. He can't jump any higher or run faster.
"He says he's no different," coach Jamie Dixon said. "But anyone who's seen him play would probably beg to differ."
Biggs might have a tough time sticking to his story after Saturday's 85-68 victory over Massachusetts in the First Commonwealth Colonial Classic at Petersen Events Center.
With Pitt all-American center Aaron Gray limited to only 17 minutes by foul trouble and a bloodied lip, Biggs helped lead the Panthers. He came off the bench to finish with 11 points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes. All matched or surpassed his career highs.
"I felt like I played strong," Biggs said. "I saw that (Gray) was hurt, so I stepped up and tried to play physical. I was going in and banging with the big guys."
![]() Brandon Thomas sticks with Sam Young. |
"We got great performances from guys off the bench," Dixon said. "It was good to see a lot of guys play well against a very good team."
Gray missed seven minutes in the second half after colliding with UMass forward Stephane Lasme and needing seven stitches to seal his injured lip. Gray finished with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and five rebounds.
Mike Cook (14), Levance Fields (13) and Antonio Graves (12) also scored in double figures for the Panthers, who will play Oakland (Mich.) (3-0) at 5 p.m. today for their third game in three days at the round-robin event.
Massachusetts (2-1), picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10, attacked Gray from the opening tip. The 7-footer picked up his second foul 5:26 into the game and sat the rest of the first half.
Levon Kendall moved to center, meaning more minutes for Biggs at power forward. Known for his defense and rebounding, Biggs shot 5 of 7 from the floor yesterday. He has scored a career-high 11 points twice in four games this year. Last season, his single-game high was eight points, as he played only eight minutes a game.
"When Tyrell shoots like that, we're going to be tough to stop," said Fields, who finished with five assists, five rebounds and no turnovers.
Biggs underwent a startling offseason transformation, losing about 20 pounds thanks to a conditioning routine and an improved diet. Reportedly a 300-pounder as a New Jersey high schooler two years ago, Biggs now has a chiseled 6-foot-8, 245-pound frame. But he insists his physical attributes are the same. Dixon disputes that.
"He's quicker. He jumps better," Dixon said. "It's not even close. But he doesn't think he lost any weight."
Like Gray, Massachusetts' all-Atlantic 10 first-team center Rashaun Freeman played five minutes of the first half while in foul trouble. When Lasme and hot-shooting guard James Life joined Freeman on the bench with two fouls for the final 5:44 of the first half, Pitt took advantage. The Panthers turned a 31-29 deficit into a 46-37 halftime edge.
"When Freeman and Life went out of the game, we couldn't score anymore," Ford said. "We don't have enough scoring weapons without those two guys."
Pitt's uses most of its bench to do damage. When Massachusetts went up, 16-15, with 13:39 to play in the first half, Biggs assisted a Kendall layup and hit a pair of jumpers during a 6-0 run for a 21-16 lead. When UMass threatened to take a lead or tie over the next few minutes, Ramon hit a jumper and later a 3-pointer to put Pitt ahead, 28-27.
Next it was Young's turn.
After Massachusetts took a 29-28 lead on a jumper by Lasme, Young answered with a 3-pointer to give Pitt the lead for good, 31-29, with 5:55 to play in the first half.
"When Gray went out of the game, I was like, 'OK,' " Ford said. "And, geez, it got worse."
