MHERST - Etienne Brower thought that he would be more personally motivated for tonight's game. The junior men's basketball forward, who transferred to the University of Massachusetts from Boston University, had been eyeing the 8 p.m. meeting with the Terriers at Agganis Arena for a long time.
But now, rather than exacting any revenge on his former team, Brower is more interested in getting healthy and helping the Minutemen (6-2) after missing the first seven games of the season with an ankle injury.
"Not that it's actually here, it's not as big a deal as I thought it would be. This isn't any more important than any other game," Brower said.
While playing well is Brower's biggest concern, he has yet to make peace with Terrier coach Dennis Wolff. Brower started every game and averaged 8.3 points in 25.2 minutes per game as a sophomore at BU. According to Brower, he and the coach didn't see eye-to-eye when he was a Terrier.
"I wasn't happy there and he made if difficult for me to leave and for a lot of my friends to leave," Brower said. "I don't think he's changed since I left, so I'm curious to see how he reacts to me playing."
Last year when Brower was sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules, he watched the UMass-BU game at the Mullins Center on the Minuteman bench. He said Wolff wouldn't shake his hand in the postgame line.
"I'm eager to see if Dennis Wolff shakes my hand," said Brower. "He didn't shake my hand last year on purpose, so I don't if he's going to do it this year. I'm not sure if I am."
Tony Gaffney, another former Terrier, came to UMass a year later under similar circumstances. Brower and Gaffney aren't alone. BU has lost a steady stream of transfers in recent years including former Amherst Regional standout Ben Coblyn, who opted to transfer shortly before the season starts.
And Corey Hassan, who would have been BU's top returning scorer, left for Sacred Heart. According the Daily Free Press, the student newspaper at BU, Hassan was interested in becoming a Minuteman as well, but Wolff would not grant him a release to UMass as well as several other New England schools.
Four of BU's top five scorers are newcomers, led by freshman guard Corey Lowe who is averaging 14.3 points per game.
With their overhauled roster, the Terriers are 3-4 overall. Since being denied an opportunity to join the Atlantic 10 in 2003-04, the Terriers have regularly played teams in the conference anyway. They opened the season with a 70-57 loss to George Washington. UMass is the third of four straight games for the Terriers against A-10 schools. BU fell to Saint Joseph's 55-39 and beat St. Bonaventure 74-46. After a two-week break for exams, BU is at Rhode Island Dec. 22.
"They're a great 3-point shooting team. They're the best shooting team we've played against so far," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "They're a young and hungry. It's been impressive that they've been able to go on the road and win the games they've won."
BU's second leading scorer, Tyler Morris (14.1 points per game), played with Ohio State freshman phenom Greg Oden in high school in Indianapolis. Morris originally signed to play for Ford at Eastern Kentucky, but decided to go to Boston University instead after Ford left for Amherst.

OSTON - Led by Rashaun Freeman's 20 points, 14 of which were in the second half, the UMass used a strong second half push to get by Boston University in the Minutemen's first trip to Agganis Arena. The win is the ninth consecutive for UMass over the Terriers and improves UMass to 7-2 overall heading into Saturday's game agaisnt Central Connecticut State at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
The win at Agganis continued UMass' road-warrior ways this season. The Minutemen improved to 5-1 in games on the road after the win - its most wins on the road since posting eight victories in 2000-01.
UMass led by as many as 12 twice in the second half over the Terriers (3-5) after a slow starting first half. Boston University cut into UMass' 27-24 halftime lead closing the gap to one, 27-26, two minutes into the second half. The Minutemen, led by an eight point spurt from Freeman, went on a 15-to-4 run after that point to gain their first 12 point advantage of the game at the 12 minute mark.
The Terriers continued to chip away throughout the remainder of the second half pulling within three with 1:31 remaining in the game on a lay-up by Corey Lowe after trailing by 10. Ibrahim Konate then hit the second of two free throws to cap an 8-to-0 run with 58 seconds to play.
UMass missed two shots on the ensuing possession and Tyler Morris hit an apparent game-winning three-pointer with 4.2 seconds remaining until the referees waived it off as a BU timeout was called by Dennis Wolff just before the shot was taken. Carlos Strong pulled the trigger on another trey under duress as time was expiring, but it was just off as UMass survived for the win.
UMass shot just over 45 percent for the game hitting 19-for-42 from the floor. Free throws were again a weak point as UMass hit just 14-for-25 (56 percent). The Terriers shot just under 40 percent converting 21-for-53 from the floor.
Along with Freeman's 20 points, Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) added 12 and Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) scored 10 off the bench. UMass had 15 assists on 19 baskets paced by Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) who had six for the game.
Bench points were key for UMass on the night as the Minutemen reserves outscored BU 18-to-8. The Terriers did convert 22 UMass turnovers into 26 points.
The Minutemen will next face Central Connecticut State at the Mohegan Sun on Saturday night.
OSTON - It certainly wasn't pretty but the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team left Boston with a victory Wednesday night.
The Minutemen's offense went into hibernation for the game's final five minutes and the team withstood a late Boston University rally for a 56-54 victory at Agganis Arena.
"I knew we were going to have a dogfight," UMass junior Brandon Thomas said. "We came out lackadaisical. I think we realized that at halftime in a three-point game. We knew we had to step it up and wake ourselves up a little bit."
UMass moved to 7-2 with the win. The Terriers, who slowed the game down considerably on offense, fell to 3-5.
"I'm just happy we won," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "This is what they did against Duke last year. They took 20 to 25 seconds off the shot clock and I don't know if you call it a stall-game or what but I turned (to my assistants) and said this is going to be grind-it-out-game."
UMass led 56-46 with 4 minutes, 40 seconds remaining when a series of missed shots and turnovers allowed BU to come back.
"It was a close game and to get where we want to go we're going to have games like this," said Thomas who had 10 points off the bench. "To be a part of a game like this where we actually pulled it off and be able to contribute means a lot."
The Minutemen had a chance to put the game away with 27 seconds left but Chris Lowe missed a runner in the lane and Rashaun Freeman missed the tip-in.
BU moved the ball upcourt and called time-out. On the ensuing possession time was running out when Tyler Morris, who Ford originally signed when he was coaching at Eastern Kentucky, sank a 3-pointer. The fans erupted, but BU had called a time-out just prior to the shot with 4.2 seconds left. Carlos Strong's 3-point try then missed with seconds left and UMass grabbed the rebound.
"We knew what play they were going to run," Thomas said. "Our coach (assistant Adam Ginsburg) drew it up exactly how it went."
Freeman finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds while Stephane Lasme had 12 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
However, it was the Minutemen's transition game that gave UMass life when its half-court offense slowed down.
"We're a fast-breaking team and that's our identity," Thomas said. "We have a lot of depth and we have athletic guards and big men that can get out in transition, so when that's working for us there aren't too many teams that can compete with us."
Thomas' 3-pointer on the fast break with less than seven minutes to play gave UMass an eight-point lead. On the next play the fast break was triggered by a Ricky Harris block. The ball came to Lowe who fed Freeman for a layup and a 52-42 lead with 5:36 remaining in the game.
"When it started going, that's when we started making our runs," Thomas said. "They had their runs too and that's when we had to come together and lock down on defense."
Neither team shot the ball well, especially in the first half. UMass went 9-for-21 from the floor while BU was 9-for-27.
The Terriers led 18-17 with 5:12 remaining in the first half when UMass went on a 9-0 run.
Thomas dunked on a fast break and then Lasme hit two free throws. Thomas drilled a 3-pointer and Lasme capped the run with a basket inside.
BU came back as Corey Lowe's four-point play pulled the Terriers within 27-24 at the break.
"We knew that they were going to be ready to play," said Ford who has two former BU players on his team. Etienne Brower did not play Wednesday, while Tony Gaffney is sitting out the year. "That was going to motivate (BU) a little bit, but you have to give them credit. They did a good job."

t wasnt exactly Chris Webber in the 1993 Final Four, but Boston University coach Dennis Wolff will probably regret his timeout in the final seconds of last nights game against UMass for a long time.
Trailing 56-54, BU sophomore guard Tyler Morris was dribbling the ball at the top of the key and seemed to have nowhere to go. Sensing his team wasnt going to be able to get off a good shot, Wolff called a timeout with 4.4 seconds left.
But immediately after the referee granted the timeout, Morris drained a 3-pointer that would likely have given the Terriers an improbable win. Instead, all BU could muster after the stoppage was a contested 3-pointer by Carlos Strong that didnt come close, and UMass escaped with a 56-54 victory.
Obviously I should not have called that timeout, Wolff said. I told the kids in the locker room that if anyone is to be blamed it is me. Its something that Ill replay over in my mind all night.
UMass coach Travis Ford was relieved that his squad escaped Agganis Arena with a victory.
![]() Gary Forbes sticks to Corey Lowe |
With 4:40 remaining, it didnt seem likely that the game would come down to the final possession. Chris Lowes transition basket gave UMass a 56-46 lead, and the Minutemen seemed to have control. But UMass would not score again, and as they did all night, the Terriers (3-5) hung tough to close the deficit to two in the final minute.
Freshman guard Corey Lowe scored 16 points and senior guard Brian Macon added 13 to key the BU comeback.
UMass was led by junior Rashaun Freemans 20 points and 12 rebounds. The downside to Freemans night was that he had six of the Minutemens 22 turnovers, which played a vital role in keeping the Terriers in the game.
Both teams got off to a sluggish start, as each went scoreless until a layup by Morris three minutes in. UMass answered with an 11-4 run, but the Terriers hung tough, twice retaking the lead in the back-and-forth battle.
A breakaway dunk by UMass senior guard Brandon Thomas with 4:21 left in the half seemed to ignite the Minutemen, who went on a 7-0 run to open up a 26-18 lead.
BU responded, capped by Lowes four-point play 14 seconds before the break to cut the deficit to three, 27-24.
ast nights game at Boston University was a homecoming for UMass junior forward Etienne Brower, but it likely wasnt filled with fond memories.
After averaging 8.3 points and 5.4 rebounds at BU as a sophomore, Brower elected to leave the Terriers and head west to Amherst.
Brower has never directly said what led to his transfer, but it was no secret at the time of the move that his relationship with BU coach Dennis Wolff was strained.
Brower sat out last season as a transfer and was expected to step in and make an immediate impact in the UMass lineup this year. An ankle injury derailed that plan, delaying his debut until a four-minute cameo in Saturdays 84-73 loss to Boston College.
Brower is still not 100 percent, but with the prospect of playing against his former team, there was no question that he would take the court in last nights game, won by the Minutemen, 56-54.
His departure from BU was the first in a number from the program, which has endured a mass exodus over the past two years.
Five members of last years squad have transferred, including Tony Gaffney, who has joined Brower at UMass. Gaffney, a junior forward, averaged 4.5 points and 3.2 rebounds last season at BU and is sitting out this year at UMass.
The biggest loss for the Terriers was sophomore guard Corey Hassan. He would have been the teams leading returning scorer, but he transferred to Sacred Heart in the offseason.
One consequence of the defections has been that Wolff has been forced to play a very young lineup.
Six of the teams top seven scorers are underclassmen, led by freshman guard Corey Lowe. The former Newton North star has made the most of his increased playing time, leading the team in scoring (14.3 ppg), including a 28-point outburst in a 74-65 win over Manhattan on Nov. 25.
BU/UMass notes
UMass senior forward Stephane Lasme posted the second triple-double in program history with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 11 blocks in a 63-49 win over St. Francis on Nov. 22.
Lasme has improved in every season since arriving in Amherst from the African nation of Gabon, and has raised his game another level this year, averaging 12.4 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.3 blocks.
Lasmes increased production has taken some of the heat off frontcourt mate Rashaun Freeman, who is leading the team in scoring for the fourth straight year, averaging a career-best 17.0 ppg.
his was one time Dennis Wolff wished he had been out of timeouts.
With his team trailing the University of Massachusetts, 56-54, and with the clock running down, the Boston University coach called time. Unfortunately, he got it, seconds before guard Tyler Morris drilled a desperation 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds left that would have given the Terriers a 57-56 victory and capped a startling comeback.
Instead, the shot was waved off and UMass held on for a 56-54 win last night at Agganis Arena in front of 3,101.
"In this business, hindsight is 20-20," said Wolff. "Obviously, I should not have called that timeout. It was in my mind that I wanted to try to get a possession where we were going to get a good shot and it didn't appear to me at the time that we were going to get one, and obviously Tyler made a hell of a shot.
"It would probably be great if we had no timeouts left."
Wolff said he never saw Morris release the ball and guard Corey Lowe, who was standing near the BU sideline and also was signaling for a timeout, said he heard the whistle blow before Morris shot.
"It's one of those crazy plays," said Lowe, who led BU with 16 points. "Coach thought we were kind of getting out of control. He wanted to slow things down and set something up."
UMass (7-2), which led by as many as 12 points in the second half, appeared in control with six minutes to go, holding a 52-42 lead.
At that point it looked as if the Minutemen had fended off BU's best shot. The Terriers had cut the lead to 5 on an 8-1 run, only to see it go back to 10 when UMass center Rashaun Freeman, who scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, followed a Brandon Thomas 3-pointer with a bucket down low.
UMass still led by 10 (56-46) with 4:33 left. But BU (3-5) came charging back, holding UMass without a hoop the rest of the way. The Terriers cut the deficit to 56-51 with 2:57 left on a fearless drive by 5-foot-9-inch guard Brian Macon (13 points). Lowe trimmed it to 3 with a putback with 1:31 remaining, and center Ibrahim Konate put the Terriers within a bucket when he made 1 of 2 free throws with 58.3 seconds left.
The comeback was aided by some abysmal free throw shooting down the stretch by the Minutemen, who were 7 of 14 from the stripe in the second half and just 14 of 25 (56 percent) overall.
"They just kept coming back, and our free throws was a big reason for that," said UMass coach Travis Ford. "That, and them playing hard and making some nice offensive plays. We were doing things offensively that we wanted. We just didn't make our free throws."
UMass also did what it wanted defensively. The Minutemen held BU to a season-low two 3-pointers and allowed the Terriers to shoot just 39.6 percent, 33.3 percent in the first half. However, late in the game BU adjusted and started taking the ball to the basket.
"Our biggest concern was stopping the 3-point line. Well, we did that, we just didn't guard anybody to the basket," said Ford.
Behind its defense, UMass led, 27-24, at the half. The lead could have been bigger, but Lowe sent BU to the locker room with some momentum after he sunk a deep 3-pointer while being fouled, converting a 4-point play with 14.8 seconds left in the half.
Another long three, Morris's, would have given BU the win. That would have bothered Ford in particular since he recruited Morris to Eastern Kentucky before he left that school to take over in Amherst last season. Ford said that after he told Morris he wasn't taking him to UMass, he also told him it might be a big mistake. It was one that almost came back to haunt him last night.
"Thank goodness for the timeout," said Ford. "That's for sure."
