EW YORK - When the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team plays on the court at Madison Square Garden at 7 tonight, it will be in a position few teams get to experience.
The Minutemen know that regardless of the result, their season ends when the National Invitation Tournament championship game ends.
"It hasn't really hit me yet," senior Etienne Brower said. "It'll probably hit me around 9 p.m." tonight.
For the first time in school history, UMass will try to end the season as champions.
The Minutemen have advanced to the Final Four in both the NCAA Tournament and the NIT before, but have never played in a final until tonight when they face Ohio State for the title.
"For all the great history at UMass, there's never been a team that played in April and there's never been a team that played for a championship here," Minuteman coach Travis Ford said. "We're trying to represent the tradition of UMass basketball and we're excited to be a part of it."
Senior Gary Forbes said this team is relishing the chance to leave its mark.
"We want to leave this school in better shape than we found it. This school has never played for a championship," Forbes said. "We want to leave a legacy at UMass. That means a lot to us."
Ohio State (23-13) is standing in the way of adding the NIT championship to that legacy. Playing the Buckeyes gives the Minutemen (25-10) a chance to sweep both teams that played in the NCAA Championship game last year.
UMass defeated two-time defending national champion Florida 78-66 in the semifinals Tuesday.
Despite losing lottery picks Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. after last season, the Buckeyes were able to bounce back. Ten of their 13 losses this season came against teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Ohio State was very difficult to beat in Columbus, where it was 17-3, but had trouble away from St. John Arena. It finished 6-10 away from home, including Tuesday's 81-69 semifinal win over Mississippi.
The Buckeyes could present size problems for the Minutemen, especially freshman center Kosta Koufos, who stands 7-feet and 265 pounds. He averages 14.2 points and 6.6 rebounds. Their entire starting lineup has size and is physical, which concerns UMass coach Travis Ford.
"We're playing a very, very good Ohio State basketball team. They're a big physical team at every spot," Ford said. "Even Jamar Butler, their point guard, is a physical basketball player. They're one of the most aggressive physical teams we've seen play this year."
The Buckeyes play a lot of zone defense, but Ford said it's much different than the one Syracuse employs.
"Ohio State plays a very aggressive zone," he said. "They're trying to force turnovers, force tough shots and trying to make you uncomfortable out of the zone."
Ohio State coach Thad Matta is 3-0 against UMass from when he coached Xavier.
"They're a very aggressive, talented basketball team. They have a great blend of drives and shooters. They can drive and kick for 3s," Matta said. "I'd venture to say they're playing their best basketball."
Ford and his staff did not sleep much after Tuesday's semifinal win. After watching the Buckeyes win the second semifinal, they continued to analyze game film.
"I like preparing. We stayed up all night watching film," Ford said. "It's different. Our players have a lot to absorb mentally. Hopefully it will sink in. This has been a good team with scouting reports.
"But this team has really done a good job of understanding what we're going to try to accomplish," Ford added. "It should be an exciting game. Ohio State is a great basketball program and coach (Thad) Matta is a great coach."

EW YORK - Tonight's National Invitation Tournament championship could be Travis Ford's final game as the coach of the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team.
Reports from various media outlets in Louisiana as well as ESPN identify Ford as the front runner to replace John Brady as the coach at Louisiana State University.
Ford had no comment Wednesday.
UMass athletic director John McCutcheon would not say whether he had been contacted by LSU officials.
"I wouldn't comment one way or the other," McCutcheon said Wednesday.
Last year Ford signed a five-year extension through 2015 to his original contract after other schools expressed interest in him.
Ford, 38, was hired by UMass in 2005 after he coached for five years at Eastern Kentucky.
There has been little news about the LSU search in recent weeks, which often means a school is waiting for a coach whose team is still playing in the postseason.
LSU also is in the process of hiring an athletic director, which complicates the search for a new coach. It hired Parker Executive Search to assist with the process.
Dan Parker of the search firm told the New Orleans Times Picayune the reports that Ford was set to be named as LSU coach were erroneous.
"We're waiting on the new athletic director to be named (Wednesday) or (today), then we'll engage with him," Parker said, according to the Times Picayune. "There have been no interviews, but we have made some phone calls. LSU wants it to be an inclusive search."
John Lombardi, who was the chancellor at UMass when Ford was hired, now heads the Louisiana State University System. One of the candidates for the athletic director is Rob Mullens. He is the deputy athletic director at Kentucky, Ford's alma mater.
Anthony Grant of Virginia Commonwealth and Scott Drew of Baylor were previously rumored as coaching candidates at LSU.
NORTHERN IOWA STILL RELEVANT - Since the University of Massachusetts played Northern Iowa, the Minutemen have played 32 games in 11 states and the District of Columbia over five months. But that game, a 75-68 loss to the Panthers Nov. 11, still resonates with the UMass coaches and players.
The Minutemen trailed by 20 points in the first half and looked like they were going to get blown out.
Instead UMass battled back to within two points in a hostile environment. They couldn't get over the hump that day, but realized that using Ford's system they could come back from large deficits.
The seeds of their National invitation Tournament comeback wins against Akron, Syracuse and Florida began that day in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
"It was a long time ago, but we talk about that game all the time," Ford said. "It set a precedent for this basketball team. It was the first time that these guys realized what the system can do.
"We were still trying to figure out who we were and how good we were, Ford added. "We were down 20 points then all of a sudden we're just down two. We remind them of that. Even though it was a long time ago, it's still being brought up a lot."
UMass has finished those comebacks in the NIT, erasing double-digit deficits in each of the last three games.
"It's not something we want to keep relying on. Our guys know if it happens we can come back. In their mind they know we're not out of the game. But it's not a situation you want to put yourself into," Ford said.
"It's important that we get off to a better start," he continued. "It's not something you can dictate. The only thing you can control is how hard you play. I don't want these guys to think just cause we've been able to do it lately, that its guaranteed. Nothing is guaranteed."
MORE GAFFNEY? - Tony Gaffney played four minutes on his injured left knee Tuesday and Ford thinks the junior big man might be available for more minutes tonight.
"He definitely wasn't 100 percent. He was probably a step slow when it comes to lateral defense," Ford said. "Hopefully he'll be even better" tonight.
UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR - Freshman Matt Glass gets credit for the understatement of the year in describing being in New York City for the first time.
"It's so, so different from home," said the native of tiny Underhill Center, Vt. "My eyes were pretty wide looking out the window as the bus got here. I was looking for the Empire State Building."
Glass was still a little wide-eyed three days into his first trip to New York City.
"I've never seen so many people in my life," Glass said. "I couldn't live here, but it's fun to visit."
FAN BUSES - UMass expects to have 13 buses filled with fans leave from McGuirk Stadium at noon today for Madison Square garden. The buses will return after the game.
Fans may purchase tickets to the championship game by calling 1-866-UMASS-TIX or Madison Square Garden at 212-465-MSG-1.
BELL RINGING - Ford, who earned his stock broker certificate after college, rang the closing bell Wednesday at the New York Stock Exchange with Ohio State coach Thad Matta.
EW YORK - A year removed from a loss in the national title game, Ohio State has a championship trophy to carry home.
Nevermind that it's from the NIT. Jamar Butler and his buddies couldn't care less.
Butler had 19 points and eight assists in his final college game, leading the Buckeyes to a 92-85 win over Massachusetts on Thursday night and prompting the victory celebration inside Madison Square Garden that they couldn't have last year in Atlanta.
The Buckeyes lost to Florida in the Final Four, but never dwelled on a snub by the NCAA selection committee that kept them from playing for another trip there. They dominated each of their four opponents on the way to New York, then had enough at the end to withstand every run the Minutemen could muster.
"This is continuing a rebuilding of the program," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "It feels good after what we went through last season."
Kosta Koufos added 22 points in earning the tournament's most outstanding player award. Evan Turner finished with 20 for the Buckeyes (24-13), who reached the preseason NIT title game but were run out of the Garden by Texas A&M.
Ricky Harris scored 27 for UMass (25-11), hitting three 3-pointers in the closing minutes to help the Minutemen stay close.
The last of them made it 77-75 with 3:13 left, but Othello Hunter scored moments later and after Harris missed another 3 try at the other end, Butler drained a 3-pointer from the wing to give Ohio State some breathing room.
Turner took care of things from the free throw line over the final minute and a half, helping the Buckeyes wrap up the title.
"I've seen this team go through a lot," Matta said, moments before cutting down the net. "I'm happy for them."
Etienne Brower, one of four players in the starting lineup who grew up in New York, had 17 points and 12 rebounds for UMass. Gary Forbes finished with 16 points and six assists, and Dante Milligan scored 14.
Massachusetts dominated Ohio State on the boards, outrebounding the bigger Buckeyes 49-37 -- and corralling a startling 30 on the offensive end. But UMass figured to be in trouble when the frenetic pace that it so enjoys kept up in the second half: Ohio State was 15-1 this season when scoring at least 70 points.
Massachusetts put a scare into Ohio State from the moment the last notes of the national anthem were played, rushing the entire length of the court to shake hands with its stoic, startled Big Ten opponent.
The Minutemen kept racing once the ball was thrown up, forcing three turnovers in the first 2 1/2 minutes and taking a 10-2 lead on a basket by Milligan.
The Buckeyes came right back, with Hunter scoring four of his 17 points to cap a 13-2 run and take a brief lead. But the Minutemen again edged ahead, and Forbes' 3-pointer with 3:50 left before halftime got the team's assistant coaches so animated the referees stopped to calm them down.
Fourteen busloads of people were ferried to New York from the UMass campus in Amherst, but they represented just a fraction of the partisan crowd. The school sold its allotment of tickets quickly, and appeared to have far more dressed in its slightly darker shade of red than its counterpart from Columbus.
EW YORK - The second-half comeback went the wrong way for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team in the championship game of the National Invitation Tournament Thursday night.
Ohio State erased a 10-point first-half deficit to capture the NIT title 92-85 before 8,407 fans at Madison Square Garden.
Unlike previous opponents for UMass (25-11), the Buckeyes neither tired from the game's pace nor struggled against the Minutemen's pressure.
'You've got to give Ohio State credit. I thought a couple of times we had them,' UMass coach Travis Ford said. 'I thought our press and our style of play was going to kick in, but I thought we gave up a few too many easy layups and that allowed them to rest.'
UMass made it to the final on the strength of back-to-back dominant second halves that featured impressive outside shooting and allowed the Minutemen to rally for wins over Syracuse and Florida.
But Ricky Harris was the only UMass player to get hot from 3-point range as he made three straight to keep the Minutemen in the game late. But UMass could not get enough stops on defense as the Buckeyes (24-13) held on.
After UMass fell behind 64-55 midway through the second half, Harris' 3-point barrage helped the Minutemen tie the game 68-68.
But Kosta Koufos hit a 3-pointer and that took back some momentum. With Dante Milligan out with foul trouble, Koufos was too much for UMass to handle. He had 21 of his 22 points in the second half and was named the tournament's most outstanding player.
Ohio State stretched its lead back to five before Harris' last 3-pointer made the score 77-75 with 3 minutes, 12 seconds left. But the Buckeyes scored seven of the next nine points to clinch the win.
Harris led the Minutemen with 27 points. All three UMass seniors reached double figures in their final college game. Etienne Brower had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Milligan scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds before fouling out and Gary Forbes added 16 points.
Evan Turner had 20 for Ohio State and Jamar Butler added 19.
As the Buckeyes celebrated and positioned a ladder to cut the net, many on the Minuteman bench were in tears.
Forbes and assistant coach Steve Middleton shared a long hug, while several players embraced around them.
Forbes said even without the title, the Minuteman senior class left its mark on UMass.
'We made a difference since I've been here,' Forbes said. 'A lot of fans have come out and supported us and this has been a great roll.'
Ford said he was sad to see the season end.
'I'm just disappointed there's no practice tomorrow,' Ford said. 'I'm disappointed I can't coach these guys tomorrow. That's the thing that hit me right now because I have really, really enjoyed coaching this team.
'It's been a lot of fun,' Ford added. 'When you have fun and you have good kids success follows and that's what happened to UMass basketball this year.'

niversity of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Travis Ford said he did not see the fan behind his team's bench at Madison Square Garden Thursday night with the sign that read "Forget LSU, Stay at the Zoo."
But Ford's comments after the Minutemen lost the National Invitation Tournament championship game 92-85 to Ohio State should give that fan hope.
Several media outlets have reported that Ford is Louisiana State's top choice to fill its head coaching vacancy. But Ford said his focus is on building the program at UMass.
"I'm excited. I think we made great strides with UMass basketball this year and I'm looking forward to coaching these guys," Ford said. "I've heard everything you guys are hearing and it's kind of interesting actually. It makes me question other things because I haven't talked to anybody."
Asked if he planned on coaching UMass next year, Ford said: "Absolutely. We need to build on this. It's not going to be easy.
"We're losing some very good players, but we think we have great players returning who didn't get to play a whole lot of minutes this year and some great players sitting out," Ford added. "I think we can grow on this. I think the fans are excited and will come out and support this basketball team next year."
Ford stopped short of saying that he would not listen if another school called him.
"I haven't even thought about it. But no one has called," said Ford, who said the interest in him is a natural by-product of his team's play. "That goes with success. That happens when you take over a situation that wasn't going real well and you get it back pretty quickly - that goes with the territory."
Ford and his assistant coaches as well as athletic director John McCutcheon now are headed to the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio.
ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM - Ricky Harris, Gary Forbes and Dante Milligan were named to the all-tournament team along with Ohio State's Jamar Butler and Kosta Koufos, who was named the most outstanding player.
MILESTONES - Forbes finished tied for No. 28 with Mike Williams on the UMass career scoring list with 1,128 points in two years as a Minuteman. Combined with his 511 points in two years at Virginia, Forbes completed his college career with 1,651 points.
His 698 points as a senior is the second-best single-season total in school history.
Ricky Harris was not far behind him on that list. His 656 points in 2007-08 put him at No. 4.
Harris' seven 3-pointers Thursday moved him into a tie for the single-season 3-point record with 104. He joined Carmelo Travieso who had 104 in 1995-96.
Harris will enter his junior year on track to reach the 1,000-point milestone with 801 in his career.
Chris Lowe could reach the school's grand club next year as well. He will enter his senior year with 779 career points. Lowe finished this season fourth on the career assists list at UMass with 485 and third for a single season with 214.
Dante Milligan's 100 blocked shots left him at No. 9 on the school's career blocked-shot list.
UMass finished the season at 25-11. That is the fifth most wins in school history behind only 1995-96 (35-2), 1991-92 (30-5), 1994-95 (29-5) and 1993-94 (28-7).
MISCELLANEOUS - UMass is now 9-13 all time in Madison Square Garden.
The game drew 8,407, including several thousand Minuteman fans. Many of them had to scramble before the game as the nearby tavern that was supposed to house a pregame party was shut down by the Internal Revenue Service early Thursday afternoon.
