UMass Athletics - recap / notes
Saint Louis Post-Dispatch - recap
MHERST - It's an odd rivalry considering the distance between the University of Massachusetts and Saint Louis.
But since the Billikens joined the Atlantic 10 in 2005-06, the contests between the two schools have been pretty even heading into tonight's game at 8 p.m. at the brand-new Chaifetz Arena.
Saint Louis won on a Tommie Liddell buzzer-beater in 2006 and UMass answered with a tight win on a Gary Forbes steal in 2007.
The Billikens prevailed 74-71 in overtime in the 2007 Atlantic 10 Tournament. That was the game when most of the Minutemen were suffering from the flu.
"That game still sticks out in my mind," said UMass senior big man Luke Bonner. "That was one of the most heartbreaking games I've been a part of. It's still fresh in my memory. We've had battles with them. It's definitely been a rivalry."
The teams split two games last season, with each winning at home in February.
Saint Louis again is led by the senior backcourt tandem of Liddell and Kevin Lisch, who are both averaging 13.5 points per game. The two are among the school's top-10 career scorers. Liddell, despite being just 6-foot-4, also leads the Billikens in rebounds with 6.4 per game.
"They're like the veterans of this league," said UMass junior Ricky Harris. "Everybody in this conference knows who they are. They're a great tandem. We've both got backcourts with experienced players. It should be fun to watch."
Coach Rick Majerus' squad features eight freshmen, including the other three starters, to go with those two seniors.
Kwamain Mitchell is at the point averaging 7.5 points and 3.8 assists per game, while Brian Conklin (7.7 points, 5.3 rebounds) and Willie Reed (7.3 points, 6.3 rebounds) start inside.
Saint Louis enters the game at 9-6 (0-1 Atlantic 10) including a 53-50 win over Boston College. The Billikens are coming off of a 70-44 loss at Xavier on Thursday.
This figures to be a low-scoring game as Saint Louis ranks eighth nationally in scoring defense, allowing 56.6 points per game, and leads the nation in 3-point percentage defense at 23.5 percent.
"I think the tougher team is going to win," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "We'll see who decides they're going to put their nose to the ground, get more floor burns and outwork their opponent."
He was anxious to see how the Minutemen (6-8, 1-0 A-10) build off their 75-62 victory over Dayton.
"We're coming off a big win on Saturday, I'm excited to see our response," Kellogg said. "Last week we practiced hard and we came in every day with a purpose and I felt very comfortable going into Saturday's game knowing we were going to play hard and compete. We've had some good practices this week. I'm expecting we're going to play well on Wednesday."
MILESTONES - Harris enters the game in a tie with Shannon Crooks for No. 31 on the UMass career scoring list with 1,074 points. He's seven points behind No. 30 Jack Foley (1,081).
Harris is No. 6 in career 3-pointers with 164, 14 behind No. 5 Lorenzo Sutton (178).
Chris Lowe is No. 3 on the Minuteman career assist list with 570, 17 behind No. 2 Edgar Padilla (597). He's on pace to become the UMass career assist leader, a spot currently held by Carl Smith (633).
Lowe needs 66 points to reach 1,000 in his career.
Tony Gaffney's 128 blocked shots as a Minuteman has him tied with Will Herndon at No. 7 all-time at UMass.
NOTES - Kellogg said he expects freshman Travon Wilcher to transfer to Maine.
This is the eighth meeting between the Minutemen and Billikens (Saint Louis leads 4-3) and the sixth different arena in which they have played. They have met twice each in the Mullins Center and the Scottrade Center (formerly the Kiel Center).
They played in the Georgia Dome in the 1998 NCAA Tournament, at St. Charles, Mo., in 2006 and at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in the 2007 Atlantic 10 Tournament.

T. LOUIS - Kwamain Mitchell scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half as UMass men's basketball fell to Saint Louis, 69-64, on Wednesday night at Chaifetz Arena. Saint Louis, which came into the game shooting 28 percent from beyond the 3-point arc was red hot canning 53 percent including 6-of-9 in the second half. UMass falls to 6-9 on the season and 1-1 in the A-10, while Saint Louis goes to 10-6 and 1-1 in the A-10.
Chris Lowe led all scorers with 21 points on 10-for-16 shooting. He gave the Billiken defense fits all night driving to the basket. Ricky Harris connected on 4-of-6 from 3-point range on his way to 18 points. Luke Bonner turned in a solid effort with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Billikens were led by Mitchell and Tommie Liddell with 14 points each. Liddell and Kevin Lisch, SLU's senior guards, combined to score their club's final 13 points as they rallied from down 57-56 with 5:54 left to come away with the win.
The game see-sawed back and forth as UMass retook the lead at 57-56 on a 9-2 run capped by a Lowe lay-up with 5:54 left in the second half.
But Saint Louis' senior guard combo of Lisch and Liddell hit consecutive 3-pointers to give the Billikens a 62-59 lead with 4:25 left in the second.
SLU took advantage of an inside-outside game early in the second half making 12 of their first 16 shots including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Liddell's free throw - the first point for SLU not on a lay-up or a 3-pointer - gave the Billikens their largest lead at 52-46 with 9:51 left in the second half.
The early second half was more of give and take as UMass took a 33-27 edge on another lay-up by Lowe. But SLU answered as Mitchell canned two 3-pointers and Brian Conklin's lay-in gave the Billikens a 37-36 led with 16:42 left in regulation.
The teams battled nip-and-tuck in the first half with the Minutemen holding a slight 31-27 advantage as Lowe hit a runner in the lane as time expired. That gave Lowe 11 points in the first half.
The Minutemen built a lead as large as eight at 22-14 with 5:45 left in the first half on a Harris jumper. That finished off a 14-4 run.
SLU answered UMass' run with an 11-2 run to retake the lead at 25-24 with 2:45 left as Kwamain Mitchell hit a pair of free throws.
With the Billikens up 27-26 on a Brett Thompson putback with 1:50, UMass scored the final five points of the half including an Anthony Gurley 3-pointer with 1:12 left as the shot clock was about the expire. Lowe followed that with his lay-up for the four-point halftime edge.
UMass returns home to host Temple at 7 p.m. on Saturday in an A-10 clash. The game will air live on ESPN2. The night also serves as the 1970s Celebration as the Minutemen continue to honor the 100 Seasons of UMass Basketball.
Chris Lowe had his second 20-point game of the season and fifth of his career with 21 points.
Lowe scored in double-figures for the seventh time this season, including 11 in the first half. He now has 37 in his 109-game career.
Ricky Harris moved to 30th in career scoring at UMass with 18 points. He now has 1,092 points. He passed Shannon Crooks (1,074) and Jack Foley (1,081).
Harris had his 14th game in double-figures in 15 contests this season with 18.
Tony Gaffney had five blocks as he continues to rank second in the NCAA in swats, entering the game with 4.9 per game.
Gaffney also had five rebounds and is averaging 11.1 rebounds, eighth in the NCAA.
UMass shot a season-best 53.8 from the floor, besting the 52.5 mark against Hofstra.
The Minutemen made just two free throws for the second time this season as they also did it against Houston.
UMass had a season-low seven assists and a season-low 24 rebounds.
On the flip side, the seven turnovers were the fewest of the season for the Minutemen.
evin Lisch was struggling with his shot. So was Tommie Liddell. Despite some tough defense by St. Louis University, Massachusetts kept making shots. Not to worry. SLU had Paul Eckerle.
Eckerle, a sophomore from Borgia High who is averaging nine minutes and 1.5 points a game and mostly is out on the court to play defense, made four 3-pointers to give SLU a badly needed boost, and the team hit some clutch shots down the stretch to pull out a 69-64 win over the Minutemen at Chaifetz Arena.
"Tonight was a really good night for me offensively and defensively," said Eckerle, who had his career high of 13 points last season against UMass. "I feel like I contributed on both sides of the ball and defense is obviously the more important of the two. I came in, it was a great atmosphere, for some reason they were leaving me open and my teammates were getting me the ball. It was a special night."
"It's amazing," Majerus said. "I told him to lose five pounds, he lost five pounds. I told him to take extra shots, he got to practice early and stayed late and got extra shots and he got in better shape. He did the three things I asked him to do. Even if he didn't hit those shots, he got in position to hit them. The kid's all heart."
If Eckerle was an unlikely hero, it was equally unlikely that SLU won with help from a 1-2-2 zone defense, the first time they've used one under coach Rick Majerus. The defense, the brainchild of associate head coach Porter Moser, was used selectively in the first half but was used just enough to confound the Minutemen (6-9, 1-1), who not surprisingly weren't expecting it.
"It was a good call," Majerus said. "It was Porter's idea. I've never played zone in my life. The guys embraced it. It changed the pace of the game and it bought us some foul time. It was disruptive to them."
SLU (10-6, 1-1) won despite being outshot by UMass 53.8 percent to 44.6. Liddell had 14 points and nine rebounds and drew praise from Majerus for an excellent all-around game. Lisch finished with 13 points, though five of them were on free throws in the final 31 seconds. Kwamain Mitchell had 14 points and six assists against no turnovers.
Eckerle's two first-half 3s snapped SLU out of some offensive doldrums. His first 3 in the second half tied a seesaw game at 40-40 and his second put SLU ahead 45-42. SLU built the lead up to six midway through the half but fell behind 57-56 before the sequence that UMass coach Derek Kellogg said decided the game. Mitchell missed a 3-point try but Lisch got the rebound and then hit a 3-pointer that put SLU ahead 59-57. UMass never led again. After a traveling call on UMass, Liddell hit a 3 after Mitchell drove and then passed the ball out. UMass had a chance to tie the game with about 50 seconds to go but Chris Lowe, who had 21 points to lead UMass, drove the lane and missed a shot. Barry Eberhardt got the rebound and SLU made most of its free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
SLU trailed by four at the half after falling behind at one point by eight and then rushing back to take the lead. That SLU was so close at the half was impressive considering UMass outshot SLU 53.8 percent to 33.3 percent in the first 20 minutes. SLU outrebounded UMass 21 to 11 in the half and got nine points on offensive rebounds.
The Billikens were down 22-14 with 5:45 to go in the first half when they began one of their more impressive spurts of the season, keyed defensively by the zone. Lisch hit a 3-pointer then got an assist when he drove to the basket and passed the ball as he fell to Eberhardt for a layin. A UMass turnover led to a nice layin on a Mitchell to Liddell to Eberhardt exchange on the drive. Finally SLU went ahead 23-22 on a tip in by Willie Reed of a Liddell miss. SLU led 27-26 with 90 seconds to go before a 5-0 run by UMass put it up at the half.
