he best way to head into a conference tournament is red hot and on a run.
For the Massachusetts men�s basketball team, there�s not much time left to get hot, and before they can do that, they may want to make sure they make the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
With three games left and a trip to Philadelphia on Sunday to take on La Salle at 5 p.m., the Minutemen will have an opportunity to get back in the win column as well as inch closer to an A-10 Tournament berth.
It would take a collapse from UMass (10-16, 5-8 A-10), coupled with a George Washington resurgence to knock the Minutemen to 13th in the conference standings and out of the tournament. But with GW (9-16, 3-10 A-10) coming to Amherst next Wednesday, anything is possible.
With a victory on Sunday over the Explorers (14-12, 5-7 A-10), the Minutemen can bring their magic number to one, or, with a George Washington loss on Saturday at Richmond, clinch an A-10 berth. A victory will also give UMass the opportunity to string a few wins together in the conference before the tournament, something they haven�t done all season.
The Minutemen, who are 3-9 on the road this season, will be out for revenge on top of everything else come Sunday, after losing at home to La Salle, 62-54, on Jan. 24. Much of the loss could be blamed on UMass� poor shooting (33.9 percent), but the Minutemen had a warm up Wednesday when they hit a school-record 16 3-pointers in the loss to Duquesne, and will hope to carry their hot hands over till the weekend.
Senior Tony Gaffney led the Minutemen back in the first meeting with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Chris Lowe (10) was the only other player to score in double figures for UMass. At the same time, Ricky Harris had the worst scoring output of his season when he scored just six points on 3-of-11 shooting and missed all six of his 3-point shots.
While the Minutemen will hope to carry over their shooting from Wednesday�s loss, it�s a different story for their defense � they gave up a season-high 94 points against the Dukes, not to mention 14 layups and seven dunks.
�When Duquesne came back at us, we didn�t respond very well,� UMass coach Derek Kellogg said Wednesday after the loss. �I thought we went on our heels. We didn�t quite battle back as hard as I would have liked.�
The Explorers (70.5 points per game) are not as prolific a scoring team in conference play as Duquesne (79.3 ppg), but will come at UMass with a balanced attack. Four of La Salle�s players average double figures in points, led by Rodney Green�s 16.7 ppg. Even on the boards the Explorers are very balanced and averaging 37.5 rebounds per game in conference play compared to UMass� 34.4.
While UMass has Gaffney dominating the boards with 10.4 rebounds per game � 16th in the nation � La Salle�s leading rebounder, Yves Mekongo Mbala, grabs just 6.4 per game and five other Explorers average at least 3.7 rebounds per game.

MHERST - There's been a lot of talk BY the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team about gaining some momentum heading into the Atlantic 10 Tournament, and then making a run in the tourney or even being good enough to win it.
For any of those things to happen, the Minutemen (10-16, 5-8 A-10) actually need to qualify for the tournament. With three games left, that's not locked up yet.
"I haven't given that much thought," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "We have to play our best basketball over the next few games, get a win or two or even three and go into the tournament with a little momentum."
Twelve of the league's 14 teams advance to Atlantic City for the conference tournament that begins on March 11. The Minutemen are 10th in the conference heading into Sunday's game at 5 p.m. at La Salle in Philadelphia which will be televised by CBS College Sports.
The Minutemen are very much in control of their own destiny, but their margin for error is small.
Any UMass win coupled with a loss by George Washington (3-10 A-10) would ensure the Minutemen of no worse than a 12th-place finish. Defeating the Colonials on senior night at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mullins Center would be the easiest path to clinching a playoff berth.
George Washington has won two of its last three over St. Bonaventure and Charlotte. The Colonials play at Richmond at 7 p.m. Saturday and host Temple at 7:30 p.m. March 7 to end the regular season. If they win all three games, UMass would have to win its other two games to stay ahead of George Washington.
St. Bonaventure (5-9) and Charlotte (4-9) are behind the Minutemen as well. Because they both beat UMass, they would win tiebreakers if they finish with the same record as the Minutemen.
The 49ers benefit by hosting last-place Fordham (1-12) at 2 p.m. Saturday. They host Richmond at 7 p.m. Tuesday and end the season at St. Bonaventure at 4 p.m. March 7 in a game that could have a significant impact on the bottom of the standings.
The Bonnies have one other game, at 2 p.m. Sunday at Saint Joseph's.
UMass also has a chance to move up in the standings. A win over La Salle Sunday would move the Minutemen into a tie with the Explorers at 6-8 in the conference. Even Saint Joseph's (7-6), which once seemed bound for a first-round tournament bye, and Richmond (7-6) could be catchable if UMass finishes strong and those teams falter.
Sunday marks the second meeting between the Minutemen and Explorers this season. La Salle won the first game 64-52 on Jan. 24 at the Mullins Center. Rodney Green led the Explorers with 22 points in that game, while Tony Gaffney had 19 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Minutemen.
"We have to make sure we're on our game and ready to play," Kellogg said.
The Minutemen weren't on their game and ready to play in Wednesday's 94-77 loss to Duquesne. Frustrated with his team's effort, Kellogg set Friday's practice for 5 a.m.
"I think it was a shake things up kind of day. We've lost games, and I don't want to say losing is acceptable, but we've lost games where the performance has been acceptable, but the outcome didn't reflect that," Kellogg said.
"Losing the way we did against Duquesne isn't acceptable and the players have to realize that," he added. "So we worked them hard and made it uncomfortable for them. Practicing at 5 a.m. is as uncomfortable as it gets."

HILADELPHIA, Pa. - An inspired second half comeback wasn't enough as the UMass men's basketball team dropped a 97-88 decision to La Salle on Sunday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena. Trailing by as many as 26, the Minutemen went on to outscore the Explorers, 42-25 in the game's final 11:21, pulling to as close as seven on one occasion. Anthony Gurley and Ricky Harris led the way with 20 points while Chris Lowe netted 15. The Minutemen fall to 10-17, 5-9 in the Atlantic 10, while the Explorers improve to 16-12, 7-7 in conference play.
For Gurley, his 20 points marked a UMass career-high. Harris' points all came in the game's final 11:12 to lead the comeback attempt. David Gibbs also added 10 points, his second-career game in double figures.
La Salle's Rodney Green and Daryl Partin each finished with 30 points.
The Explorers shot 53 percent from the field (31-of-59), including 50 percent (10-for-20) from behind the arc. UMass shot 43 percent (31-of-72) and 39 percent (9-for-23) from 3-point range. La Salle won the battle of the boards, 47-37.
The Minutemen scored four of the first six points of the second half to pull within 15, 48-33, but La Salle continued to have an answer. A Green jumper gave the Explorers a 59-39 lead with 14:59 to go in the second half.
UMass showed life with eight straight points to make it 72-54. The Minutemen extended the run to 17-4 after a Harris 3-pointer cut the once 26-point lead in half, 76-63.
A Gibbs 3-pointer and Lowe layup cut La Salle's lead to nine, 84-75, with 2:20 remaining, the closest UMass had been since 19-10.
In the final minutes, the Minutemen pulled within eight on numerous occasions, but it wasn't enough.
The Explorers used an 11-0 first half run spanning 3:46 to open up a quick 14-3 lead just over five minutes into the game. UMass responded with seven of the next 10 points, highlighted by five from Gurley to pull within six at 16-10.
La Salle answered with a 14-4 run to make it 30-14 with 7:41 remaining in the first half. UMass eventually pulled back to within 39-29 after Matt Glass' second 3-pointer of the half, but the Explorers scored the next seven points to take their largest lead of the half (17) heading into the locker room.
UMass returns to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. vs. George Washington in the final regular season home game at the Mullins Center. It will be Senior Day as Luke Bonner, Gaffney, and Lowe will be honored prior to tipoff.
HILADELPHIA � The Massachusetts men�s basketball team may have found the answer to its problems in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Don�t qualify.
The Minutemen took another step in that direction Sunday night, losing a deceptively-close 97-88 contest at Tom Gola Arena to fall to 11th place in the conference standings and set up a crucial matchup with George Washington on Wednesday.
UMass made a late spurt to keep it respectable, but 30 minutes of bad basketball consisting of defensive lapses, careless turnovers and bad shooting � among other problems � was too much for the Minutemen to overcome a 26-point deficit against the Explorers.
�Anytime two players go for 60 points, obviously something�s not right on the defensive end,� said UMass coach Derek Kellogg referring to the 30-point efforts from both Rodney Green and Darryl Partin. �We came out sluggish and didn�t play with real toughness in the first half.�
Kellogg sent an immediate message in the second half to his team, benching point guard Chris Lowe, Luke Bonner and Ricky Harris � who had no first-half points � in favor of David Gibbs, Tyrell Lynch and Anthony Gurley to start the second half.
�I was pretty candid with the team at halftime. It was definitely a statement,� Kellogg said. �I thought those were the guys who competed in the first half and played at a level I expect. So I figured we�d play the guys who were playing the hardest.�
It took a while, but the Minutemen got the message midway through the second half just as Harris scored his first points of the game.
The Minutemen battled back from a 72-46 La Salle lead with 11 minutes, 47 seconds remaining in the second half to pull within eight points with 1:02 left � but Partin hit two free throws to seal the win for La Salle (16-12, 7-7 A-10), which went the final 6:01 without a field goal to let UMass back in it.
It was UMass� second-consecutive loss � and eighth defeat in its last 11 games overall � since stunning Saint Joseph�s in Philadelphia last Sunday, with both losses resulting in a season-high in scoring for the opposition. The Minutemen allowed 94 points in Wednesday�s loss to Duquesne.
Sunday�s defeat puts UMass in trouble in the conference. If the Minutemen (10-17, 5-9 A-10) fall to the suddenly-surging Colonials, they will be in serious danger of missing out on the A-10 Tournament for the first time in school history. If they do qualify, they�ll be one-and-done in the tournament for the seventh straight season if a repeat of Sunday�s first-half performance occurs.
�It�s big if we want to go to Atlantic City. It�s as big as it can be,� said Kellogg, referring to the upcoming game against GW.
He doesn�t have to tell his players of that fact.
�We�re well-aware, but we�re trying not to think about that and make this more about us. If we play the way we�re capable of playing on Wednesday that will be put to rest,� UMass� Tony Gaffney said.
Gaffney won�t necessarily be a part of that effort Wednesday, as the senior forward sat out much of the second half with tendonitis in his knees. But both he and Kellogg were optimistic after the game that he will be able to play.
Gaffney played 19 minutes in the first half as seemingly everything went wrong for the Minutemen.
UMass trailed 14-3 early and never recovered. Two quick fouls on Harris sent UMass� leading scorer to the bench for much of the first half, while the rest of the offense sputtered, forcing up bad shots and missing the few close-range looks it did get. Poor defense and hot shooting by the Explorers escalated UMass� problems quickly in a 46-29 score heading into halftime.
Harris scored 20 second-half points to tie Gurley for the team-high in scoring. Lowe had 15 points and nine assists. But it was Green and Partin � who averaged 3.2 points per game entering the game � that took over the game from the start.
Likely due to the second-half effort, UMass remained relatively upbeat following the loss.
�We haven�t had the season that we had hoped, but it says a lot about the character of our team � especially after what happened against Duquense,� Gaffney said. �It would have been extremely easy for guys to just give in and no one did. It doesn�t show in the win-loss column but it shows how far we�ve come.�

HILADELPHIA - Much of the hopeful energy generated by the dramatic win at Saint Joseph's on Feb. 22 was long gone when the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team walked off the floor at Tom Gola Arena after a 97-88 loss to La Salle on Sunday.
A frenetic comeback attempt by the Minutemen helped turn a 26-point deficit into a much more respectable final score, but it was still their second straight loss.
"We came out really sluggish and didn't play with much toughness in the first half, but I was happy with how we competed and really made it a game," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "With a few breaks and a few bounces I thought we could have been right back in the ball game.
"It was a good learning lesson for our young guys," he added. "This is how we compete. I was proud of the guys in the second half."
The Minutemen (10-17, 5-9 Atlantic 10) were in a hole early. The teams traded 3-pointers to start the game, but the Explorers (16-12, 7-7 A-10) scored the next 11 points to stagger UMass right away.
La Salle dominated the boards, 28-14, before intermission and was ahead 46-29 at the break, led by 18 first-half points from Rodney Green.
Kellogg tried to shake things up by pressing and trapping to infuse energy into his flat roster. And he started David Gibbs, Gary Correia and Anthony Gurley over Chris Lowe, Luke Bonner and Ricky Harris out of intermission.
But the Explorers still stretched their lead to 20 just over five minutes into the second half and increased it to at 72-46 with 11 minutes, 21 seconds remaining.
"Those were the guys that competed in the first half," Kellogg said of his second-half starters. "I figured we'd play the guys that were playing the hardest."
Harris leads the way
It took Harris a long time to get going. The Minutemen's leading scorer picked up two fouls in the first 10 minutes, both on charges, without scoring a point.
Harris was still scoreless until he made two free throws with 11:12 left. His first field goal came just over a minute later. But he took off from there, helping to spark an 8-0 run that ballooned into a 24-9 surge to draw UMass within 83-70.
With Tony Gaffney on the bench with a left knee injury, Kellogg used a four-guard, one-big man lineup that trapped all over the floor. Had the La Salle lead been a little smaller or the time left a little longer, the Minutemen might have completed the comeback.
The Explorers scored just one field goal in the last six minutes, but made enough free throws to hold on. Before Sunday, no La Salle had player had scored 30 points all season, and UMass had not allowed an opponent to reach that figure.
But two Explorers scored 30 on Sunday. Green, who is a lock to reach all-conference status next week, was not a shock because he already had multiple 20-point efforts. He finished with 30 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
But the surprise was 30 from Darryl Partin, who had never scored more than 11 in his career and averaged just 3.2 points in 10 minutes per game.
"I'm so pleased with Darryl," La Salle coach John Giannini said. "We had two players with 30 points. I'm not sure that happened in college basketball this year. That was the wow factor today."
Partin didn't even crack a smile when talking about his career night.
"I was just out there playing," Partin said. "You lose yourself in the flow of the game. I was just focused on trying to get this win."
Gurley scored 20 points, his career high at UMass, while Harris had all 20 if his in the second half. Lowe added 15 points and nine assists.
The loss sets up a critical game against George Washington (10-16, 4-10 A-10) at 7 p.m. Wednesday on senior night at the Mullins Center. The Colonials are a game behind UMass, Charlotte and St. Bonaventure who are tied for 10th in the conference standings. A loss to George Washington would likely keep the Minutemen out of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
"We played hard in the second half," Harris said of Sunday's game. "Hopefully we can play hard in the first half ... This game was very important. We didn't come out like we were supposed to."

HILADELPHIA - The 97-88 loss at La Salle on Sunday by the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team doesn't exactly make Wednesday's game against George Washington a do-or-die contest to make it to the conference tournament in Atlantic City. But it's pretty close.
The Minutemen (5-9 Atlantic 10) can't get into next week's A-10 Tournament without winning at least one more game. Beating the Colonials when they play at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday is the easiest path to the 12-team tournament. That would assure UMass of no worse than the No. 12 seed.
Wednesday's game "is big if we want to go to Atlantic City. It's as big as it can be," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said.
If the Minutemen lose Wednesday, they would need to upset Rhode Island on the road at 2 p.m. Saturday and get help from other teams to avoid finishing 13th and out of the tournament.
A UMass win over the Rams and a GW loss to Temple Saturday would allow the Minutemen to finish ahead of the Colonials.
If Charlotte loses at home to Richmond Tuesday and UMass beats Rhode Island, the loser of Sunday's game between Charlotte and St. Bonaventure would be out.
If Charlotte beats Richmond Tuesday and George Washington defeats Temple Saturday, UMass would need to couple a win at Rhode Island with a victory by the 49ers over St. Bonaventure.
Ricky Harris said he is just focusing on the Colonials.
"I hope we can get this win Wednesday so we can make it to Atlantic City," Harris said. "I feel as though if we get to Atlantic City a lot of teams won't want to play us."
Senior Tony Gaffney agreed.
"We're well aware. We're trying not to think about this and making it all about us," he said. "If we play the way we're capable of playing on Wednesday we can put this all to rest."
GAFFNEY HURTING - Gaffney played just seven minutes in the second half as the tendinitis in his left knee flared up.
Kellogg said he is confident that Gaffney would be ready to play Wednesday.
"A little ice and a little rest should have him ready," Kellogg said.
BONNER FREE THROWS - After shooting just 16 free throws all season before Sunday's game, senior big man Luke Bonner went to the line eight times and made four.
LYNCH TECHNICAL - UMass was whistled for a technical for the second straight game as freshman big man Tyrell Lynch was called for his second of the season.
MILESTONES - Gaffney's two blocked shots gave him 109 this season, the third best single-season total in school history.
Chris Lowe, who already holds the UMass career record with 660 assists, is climbing the single-season list. His nine assists gave him 175 this season, moving him past Joe DiSarcina (167), Rick Pitino (168) and Alex Eldridge (174) into sixth place. Carl Smith (191) is next on the single-season list. Lowe's 214 assists in 2007-08 season are No. 3 on the list.
Lowe cracked the Atlantic 10's top five in career assists by passing Marques Green (657) who played at St. Bonaventure from 200 to 2004.
