MHERST - Three games into the men's basketball season, the swagger that had Chris Lowe talking about being Atlantic 10 player of the year in the preseason is at least temporarily gone.
The University of Massachusetts senior point guard is struggling. The combination of a new offense and more responsibility has been a tough adjustment as he and the Minutemen prepare for their home opener at 7 tonight against Jacksonville State at the Mullins Center.
Lowe opened the season Nov. 11 with 18 points, 11 assists and five turnovers in a 90-71 win over Division II Arkansas-Monticello.
But reigning Missouri Valley Conference defensive player of the year Bryan Mullins of Southern Illinois harassed Lowe into 10 turnovers with no assists in an 80-73 loss Nov. 12.
He played better against Memphis in an 80-58 loss Nov. 17, but three assists and five turnovers still was far below the standard he had set for himself before this season.
"It's been tough. What can I say? Things aren't going to change. I just have to figure out a way out," Lowe said. "I'm thinking a lot right now, but that's not really the problem. The problem is effort. If I give a better effort everything else will fall into place.
"I've had a few days of practice to get back to how I used to play and get my confidence back," he added. "I just have to put a better effort offensively and defensively and start leading my team. I haven't been the same Chris Lowe people see me as."
UMass coach Derek Kellogg was not going to dismiss Lowe's intentions of increased effort, but he compared Lowe's early struggles to those of two other Minutemen guards a decade ago in Bruiser Flint's first season as UMass' head coach.
"He needs to practice as hard as he can every second that he's here. That'll get his confidence to the level it needs to be at," Kellogg said. "I liken it to the year Carmelo (Travieso) and Edgar (Padilla) had after (Marcus) Camby and those guys left. They were on magazines all over the country as the best backcourt in America.
"Not to that level, but Chris and Ricky (Harris) have that on them a little bit. That was not an easy year for Edgar and Carmelo," Kellogg continued. "Now instead of opponents shooting at Gary Forbes, Etienne Brower and then Ricky and Chris, now defenses are geared to stopping those guys and wearing C-Lowe down."
Kellogg said an improvement by Lowe could boost the entire team.
"Point guard is paramount in this offense and it's the toughest position to master quickly," Kellogg said. "You have a lot of responsibility. As he continues to master it offensively, we'll get better,
"I'm telling him right now, serve your teammates, make plays for other guys," Kellogg added. "That will make you feel better and you won't feel as much pressure to score. But whether you're playing well offensively or not you have to always defend, always rebound and do the little things that we ask."
Lowe said the week off since the Memphis game was valuable, but he is anxious to break the team's two-game losing streak.
"It was a good week off, but we had two tough losses so we want to get back on the court," he said. "We have a lot of competitors on the team that want to get back on the court."
The game is Kellogg's first at home as the coach of the Minutemen. UMass was 30-1 at Mullins when Kellogg was a player.
Jacksonville State (2-1) lost their opening game of the season 89-76 to South Carolina in a battle of Gamecocks Nov. 14. Jacksonville bounced back to beat West Alabama 69-48 and hung on to win 80-73 in double overtime against Georgia State Saturday. That game snapped the Gamecocks' 16-game nonconference road losing streak.
A pair of freshmen lead Jacksonville in scoring. Brandon Crawford, a 6-foot-6 forward, is averaging 15.7 points per game while shooting 53.6 percent from 3-point range. Fellow rookie Geddes Robinson, a 6-5 forward, is next at 14 points per game and leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game.
While UMass is trying to manage without big men Luke Bonner and Matt Hill, the Gamecocks could offer some relief as only reserve big man Amadou Mbodji (6-foot-11) is taller than 6-foot-8.
This is the return game for the 2006 meeting between the two teams at Jacksonville that UMass won 100-69.
NOTES: Before the game, the Minutemen will raise last year's National Invitation Tournament banner and show a short video on the season.
Harris needs three 3-pointers to pass Padilla (136) for sixth on the UMass career list and five to pass Kellogg.

MHERST, Mass. - Despite Tony Gaffney's third double-double in four games and an inspired second half run, UMass dropped its home opener, 75-74, to Jacksonville State on Monday night. The Minutemen, in head coach Derek Kellogg's Mullins Center debut went on a late 13-0 run and led by five with 40 seconds left, but the Gamecocks scored six points in the final 22 seconds to pull out the victory. With the loss, UMass drops to 1-3 on the season, while JSU improves to 3-1.
Gaffney led the Minutemen at both ends of the court once again, netting a career-high 20 points to go along with 13 rebounds and eight blocks. Chris Lowe scored 20 points as well and led UMass with five assists. For Jacksonville State, Jonathan Toles led the team with 18 points and five assists. Brandon Crawford contributed 17 points and two steals for the Gamecocks.
The Minutemen came out of the gates strong, converting a Tyrell Lynch layup and Lowe 3-pointer to take a quick 5-0 lead, but the Gamecocks used an 11-0 run over a 3:47 stretch, capped off by three-straight buckets by Brandon Crawford, to take a 20-13 with 9:27 left in the half.
Jacksonville State led, 29-23, with 5:13 left in the half when the Minutemen, sparked by increased intensity at the defensive end, closed the half on an 11-2 run to take a 34-31 lead into the locker room. The Minutemen held the Gamecocks scoreless for the final 4:42 of the half.
Gaffney led the way in the second with 12 points, six rebounds, and four blocks. With just under two minutes left her secured a defensive rebound and took it coast to coast for a dunk that gave UMass its first lead since the 11:33 mark.
UMass outshot JSU, 43.3% to 37.8%, in the first 20 minutes, including 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. The Minutemen also held the advantage on the boards, 22-19.
After a Ricky Harris layup to start the half upped the UMass lead to five, matching its largest up to that point, the Gamecocks went on a 10-0 run to take the lead back, 41-36, with 16:44 to go. Two Jeremy Bynum 3-pointers fueled the run.
Lowe kept the Minutemen close throughout the middle portion of the half, scoring nine-straight of UMass' points. Anthony Gurley then heated up, scoring eight-straight points, including two 3-pointers, but the Gamecocks, led by Jonathan Toles, kept the Minutemen at arms-reach.
With just over six minutes left and JSU leading by six, UMass again cranked up the defense, which led to offensive opportunities, and used a 13-0 run between the 5:47 and 1: marks to retake the lead, 72-66.
A Lowe layup with 40 seconds left gave UMass a 74-69 lead, but Brandon Crawford converted a four-point play with 22 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one. Two missed front ends of one-and-ones for UMass led to a Toles basket with eight seconds left that gave JSU the lead back, 75-74.
Gurley's ensuing 3-point attempt missed and Lowe secured the offensive rebound, but his rushed attempt at the buzzer missed as well.
UMass Head Coach Derek Kellogg's general thoughts
That was very reminiscent of something that happened to me not too long ago. It was almost the perfect storm of things that could go wrong a short period of time from missed free throws to missed assignments to putting a three-point shooter on the line. I'll watch that last minute about 50 times to see if there was anything we could have done better as a coaching staff. I thought our guys competed hard, especially during the final run; I just have to find a way for them to play harder and buy into what we're trying to do on the defensive end of the floor. They got open looks and we didn't do a very good job of guarding them. Offensively we got the ball to the rim, not that we made every shot but we got into the lane. Chris Lowe did some goods things, Tony Gaffney, I wish there were 12 of him on the roster because he does everything you ask him to do. It just wasn't enough good things on the defensive end. Until we improve defensively we're just going to be an okay basketball team.
Coach Kellogg on the dribble-drive offense
The dribble-drive is a four-out, one-in offense and you're just trying to create space so guys can make plays. We played some strange line-ups tonight, but that is who we have on our roster. We're just going to try and play guys that can help us win and guys that can lock in defensively.
Coach Kellogg on Gary Correia
Correia is a solid player, he does everything you ask him to do, he'll compete on both ends of the floor. He's a good role player and he's going to continue to get better. Obviously I would like him create and do more but he come everyday to practice and he has good fundamentals on both ends of the floor.
Coach Kellogg on the team's intensity
I am trying very hard. My whole speech, before the game, during the game, and after the game was, "Let's play intense basketball for 40 minutes, let's go out there and compete on every play and every possession." If you do it everyday in practice, it will happen. We do it sometimes but not enough. We need to do it everyday in practice. I'm trying to stay on these guys and get them to compete with their hearts. We don't have a lot of bodies to really go at each other in practice so I try to come up with different drills and different ways of doing things to make them compete without physically hammering them so that during the game we have no energy and no enthusiasm.
Jacksonville State Head Coach James Green's general thoughts
I think we saw two team that competed very hard during a ballgame that could go either way. It was a good game for both teams to learn from and we were very fortunate to win that game. The biggest thing that helped us was not dropping our heads when they made all the big runs at us during the second half. We did a better job with our tempo in the second half, we had some looks at the basket early and we took those looks early on but as the game went along I think we turned some of them down. It's very difficult to guard the dribble penetration because you can get to the rim but also have the ability to pitch it out and knock down the threes. We felt like our best defense was to keep the ball a little longer on the offensive end.
Coach Green on UMass
Obviously we are both new systems and I know Coach Kellogg and what kind of system he runs after being at Southern Mississippi and competing against him. It takes some time for guys to really understand what you are trying to do and I think that happened with both teams, we just happened to make an extra basket. UMass is going to be fine once they have a greater understanding of what he wants from them.
Coach Green on the adjustment after the big UMass run
As a coach, I can't really remember having so many young players that have been as poised as we have in these two road games and in this environment. I know it would have been a lot tougher if it was full but it says a lot about our guys and the attention that they pay to detail and their willingness to never quit. We saw a look in their eyes with 28 seconds to go that didn't look too good, so we had to get that straightened out in the huddle. And after that I thought we continued to play, and obviously the three point basket was a huge basket and it was a very unfortunate foul for them.
UMass is now 15-3 in home openers at the Mullins Center, snapping a six game winning streak in home openers.
Tony Gaffney scored in double-figures for the third time this season in four games and the sixth-time in his career with 19 points.
Gaffney tied a career-high in points with 20. He also scored 20 points against Stony Brook back in 2006 when he played at Boston University.
Gaffney posted his third double-double in four games with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Gaffney had a career-high in blocks with eight.
Chris Lowe reached double-figures for the third time this season and 33rd time in his four-year career with 20 points.
Anthony Gurley hit double-figures for the third time in four games this year with 11 points.
MHERST - Derek Kellogg's first home game as the head coach of the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team had a disappointing crowd and a more disappointing result.
Jacksonville State ruined Kellogg's homecoming as Jonathan Toles' floater in the lane with eight seconds left gave the Gamecocks a 75-74 win Monday at the Mullins Center.
The Minutemen trailed 66-59 with 6:11 remaining, but Kellogg used a four-guard lineup that produced a 13-0 run to put UMass ahead 72-66 with 1:45 left.
DeAndre Bray then hit a 3-pointer that Chris Lowe answered with a layup. Tony Gaffney then blocked Brandon Crawford, grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled. But Gaffney missed the front end of the one-and-one with 28 seconds left.
Jacksonville State hurried the ball to Crawford who made a 3-pointer while being fouled by Lowe. Crawford completed the four-point play to cut the Minuteman lead to 74-73.
Jeremy Bynum quickly fouled Ricky Harris who is normally a good free-throw shooter, Harris too missed the front end of the one-and-one.
Geddes Robinson grabbed the rebound and hustled the ball up the floor before Toles hit the runner.
On the final UMass possession, the Gamecocks cut off Lowe's path to the basket and forced him to kick the ball to Anthony Gurley, whose 3-point try hit the front rim. Lowe grabbed the offensive rebound but his putback attempt missed as the Minutemen shouted in vain for a foul and Jacksonville State raced off the floor in celebration.
"They're not going to call the foul at the end of the game," Lowe said.
'Perfect storm'

"I'll probably watch that last minute-and-a-half 50 times over the next couple days to see if there was anything we could have done as a coaching staff," he added.
Gaffney shook his head in frustration.
"I thought we had it," Gaffney said. "We had a lot of dumb mistakes by upperclassmen."
The Gamecocks (3-1) figured to be an easy opponent to make Kellogg's homecoming victorious in front of what UMass hoped would be a crowd boosted by Springfield fans rooting on their native son. But just 4,821 people watched as UMass fell to 1-3.
Both the players and Kellogg said they are worried about the team's lack of intensity.
"I have to find a way to get them to play harder and get them to buy in to what we're trying to do on the defensive end of the floor," Kellogg said. "Until we improve defensively we're just going to be an OK basketball team.
"My speech during the game, before the game and after the game is let's play intense basketball for 40 minutes," he continued. "The only way you do that is to do it every day in practice. We do it sometimes. We have to get them to compete and continue to play harder."
"Dudes need to look in the mirror and decide if they want to play with heart and passion," said Gaffney, who came within two blocks of a triple-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks. "From the jump, no one played with that fire. They came in here, and outworked us, outscrapped us and outhustled us."
Lowe, who had 20 points, five assists (all in the first half) and four turnovers, absolved Gaffney and put the blame on himself.
"Right now Tony is the only one providing any leadership," Lowe said. "I'm not providing any leadership and if I don't do that the team's not going to be successful. Everything is really falling on me."
Toles led the Gamecocks with 18 points and Crawford added 17.
The Minutemen are at Wisconsin-Green Bay at 8 p.m. Saturday.
"The season ain't over," Lowe said. "We're 1-3. We're going to learn from this, work hard and move on. We have no choice but to play hard. This was a smack in the face. If we don't play hard Saturday I don't know what the hell is wrong with this team."

MHERST - Junior guard Doug Wiggins has been suspended indefinitely from the University of Massachusetts men's basketball program by coach Derek Kellogg and athletic director John McCutcheon.
Amherst police reported that Wiggins, 20, of East Hartford, Conn., was arrested about 3:50 a.m. Saturday at a Puffton Village home on a charge of breaking and entering to commit a misdemeanor. Wiggins was arrested after he was found inside the bathroom of another person's home, according to police.
Wiggins is sitting out this year after transferring from the University of Connecticut.
Kellogg said Wiggins could eventually be reinstated, but he wants more information.
"We're going to find out everything involved and then go from there," Kellogg said.
Wiggins will be held out of practice during his suspension.

Kellogg said he would use four guards again because injuries have left the Minutemen with limited numbers inside,
"The dribble-drive is a four-out, one-in offense. You're trying to clear out and make space so guys can get into the lane and make space," Kellogg said.
"We used some crazy lineups tonight. That's who we have on our roster," he added. "I'm going to try to play guys that will help us win, guys that defensively will try to lock in and make plays."
CORREIA A BRIGHT SPOT - Had the Minutemen held on to win, Correia might have been the hero. His strip of Jeremy Bynum followed by an offensive rebound and a putback gave UMass a 69-66 lead at the time.
"Gary played well. He's solid. He'll do what you ask him to do," Kellogg said. "He'll compete on both ends of the floor. He's a good role player. I'm happy with Gary Correia. I'd like him to give more, but he's trying. He comes every day and brings it in practice."
NEXT UP - The Minutemen (1-3) are off until 8 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Phoenix are 2-2. After losing to Utah and Rollins, Wisconsin-Green Bay has beaten Marshall and Morgan State.
BAYNO TAKES LEAVE - Former UMass assistant coach Bill Bayno, who is in his first season coaching Loyola Marymount, has left his team for an indefinite medical leave of absence.
"Recently, I was diagnosed with a serious medical condition, in part related to the stress and anxiety of head coaching," Bayno said in a statement released by the school. "It will require treatment which will force me to take a leave of absence. It is unfortunate and I feel badly for the university, the coaching staff and most of all my players and their families, all of whom I will miss very much. I ask for privacy for myself and my family and I thank you for your prayers and support."
MISCELLANEOUS - Monday's game came on the 15th anniversary of the Minutemen's 91-86 upset of No. 1 North Carolina in overtime at Madison Square Garden when Kellogg was the point guard.

But the Massachusetts men's basketball team failed to capitalize twice in the final minute from the free-throw line. The Minutemen's miscues allowed Jacksonville State to come from behind and pull off a 75-74 victory at the Mullins Center.
After struggling to regain the lead since 2 minutes, 30 seconds into the second half, UMass (1-3) put together a run a 13-0 run that started with just over 6 minutes left and the Minutemen trailing 66-59.
DeAndre Bray hit a 3-pointer with 1:10 left to end the run bringing Jacksonville to within three at 72-69.
Chris Lowe hit a lay-up on the ensuing drive to bring the lead back to five. Tony Gaffney was fouled on the following possession giving him an opportunity to extend the lead to seven with a 1-and-1 opportunity. Gaffney missed the first shot, and the Gamecock's Brandon Crawford followed by sinking a 3-pointer with 0:23 remaining.
On the shot, Lowe fouled Crawford, allowing him to complete the four-point play to bring the score to 74-73. Jacksonville immediately fouled Ricky Harris sending the senior to the line for a 1-and-1, the second for the Minutemen in the final 29 seconds of the half.

"We made dumb mistakes by the veterans. Putting a senior and a junior at the line for 1-and-1 with a chance to close out the game and missing both," Gaffney said after the game. "It's unacceptable."
After a Jacksonville timeout, Lowe received the inbound, drove down court, failed to penetrate the Gamecock's defense, and passed out to Anthony Gurley who missed a 3-point shot. Lowe grabbed the offensive rebound but was unable to get a shot off before the clock expired.
"They came in here and outworked us and out scrapped us and out hustled us and they deserved to win," Gaffney said.
JSU coach James Green said after the game that the game was one that he hoped both teams could learn from, but Gaffney disagreed.
"This isn't even about learning. [Players] need to learn about themselves. [Players] need to go home and look in the mirror and decide if they want to play here or if they are going to play with heart and passion," Gaffney said. "From the jump no one played with that urgency."
The Minutemen quickly lost a 5-0 lead to start the game, eventually falling behind 20-13 after an 11-0 run by the Gamecocks. After falling behind again 29-23 with 5:13 left in the first half, UMass needed an 11-2 run to take the lead, 34-31 entering the half.
JSU came out on an 18-7 run to start the second half, extending their lead to six with 12:35 remaining. The Gamecocks led by as many as seven before UMass 13-0 run to take a six-point lead with 1:46 to go.
Gaffney was tied with Lowe with a game-high 20 points. The senior forward recorded his second double-double in the last two games as he also recorded 13 rebounds and eight blocks in 39 minutes.
As for the Gamecocks, they were led by Toles who was 3-for-3 from 3-point range as he scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds and had five assists.
"It was almost the perfect storm of everything that could go wrong in a short period of time. From missed free throws to missed assignments to putting a 3-point shooter on the [free-throw] line," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said after the game. "I'll probably watch that last minute and a half 50 times over the next couple of days to see if there is anything we can do as a coaching staff."

att Glass and Tyrell Lynch are too old at this point to grow any taller.
But they're also too young to be relied upon to solve all the problems of the undersized and undermanned Massachusetts men's basketball team.
With the way Tony Gaffney keeps playing, they may not have to. But his heroics on both ends of the floor fell one-point short Monday night in a 75-74 home opening loss to Jacksonville State at the Mullins Center.
"Right now Tony is the only one playing with leadership," senior point guard Chris Lowe said after the game. "Just because I had [20] points that doesn't mean anything. I'm not providing as much leadership as I should, and if I don't do that the team is not going to be successful. Everything is really falling on me."
With 7-footer Luke Bonner and reserve forward Matt Hill out with injuries, it also falls on the underclassmen to step up their performances. But even with a fully healthy roster, rebounding and toughness inside was a major question mark this season.
Gaffney takes care of a lot of that by himself, but even though he played all but 1 minute Monday night in a strong all-around performance, he can't shore up the center and forward positions at the same time.
That leaves sophomore Matt Glass (6-foot-6) and freshmen Tyrell Lynch (6-foot-9) and Travon Wilcher (6-foot-7) in charge of keeping opposing offenses out of the paint and off the glass.
And no one could do that against JSU's Jonathan Toles on a drive to the hoop with 9 seconds remaining for the game-winning layup.
"I'm trying like heck," said UMass coach Derek Kellogg, referring to trying to get his team to play harder and with more fire. "My whole speech before, after and during the game is to play intense basketball for 40 minutes."
Kellogg admits that it's tough to rely on young players such as Glass, Lynch and Wilcher down-low at this stage of their careers, but he really doesn't have much of a choice right now.
"We played some strange, strange lineups tonight and that's who we have on our roster," Kellogg said. "And so I'm just going to try to play guys who are going to help us win and guys that will make plays defensively."
Gaffney made plays all night and in every possible way - scoring 20 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and blocking eight shots in a near triple-double. Lynch was solid early on, grabbing five rebounds and scoring six points on easy baskets in the paint. But he made no impact in the second half, registering a single rebound in 6 minutes.
With guards Chris Lowe, Ricky Harris and Anthony Gurley constantly on the floor - often all at the same time - that leaves three non-rebounders and interior defenders on the court. That enabled the Gamecocks to score 32 points in the paint, capped by the final basket of the game by Toles.
Kellogg talked after the game about how hard it is for his team to play with the intensity required on defense for the Minutemen to be successful.
"The second your guy catches the ball, you're on him. And you're covering a guy for all 35 seconds of the shot clock and then you run up the court and attack on defense, only to sprint back on defense," Kellogg said.
"And you never stop," he added. "Working that way is a hard thing to get across. It's hard to do when you really only have nine, 10 guys. Maybe I'm asking too much, but I don't think I am."
Kellogg is concerned that his team isn't taking enough pride on defense and is focusing too much on their offense.
"The thing I want to get our guys away from is not get excited when you make shots, let's get excited when you make a stop on defense," he said. "I think the floor is a little tilted right now where they run a little faster one way and not so fast the other day and we're trying to change that everyday."
They'll have to in order to compete in a deep Atlantic 10 this season.
