ith just two days and a time zone separating Saturday night's win over Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis and Tuesday's game at Houston, the University of Massachusetts faces a tough turnaround with lots of travel and not much preparation time.
But riding a four-game winning streak, senior point guard Chris Lowe said the Minutemen (5-6) are anxious to build off their momentum.
"We're ready to get back on the court," Lowe said. "We've got a good thing going. We want to keep it flowing and keep the momentum going."
The game was originally scheduled for 8 p.m., but was moved back to 2 p.m. to allow Cougar fans to attend Tuesday's basketball game before making the 262-mile journey to Fort Worth, where the Houston football team is competing in the Armed Services Bowl, Wednesday at 12.
In last year's meeting between UMass and Houston at the Mullins Center, the Minutemen erased a 13-point first-half deficit to win 95-89. That game was the last in a six-game winning streak for UMass.
Unlike last year, where both coaches stepped on the gas throughout in hopes of outscoring and outlasting the other team, UMass will try to control tempo to keep the game from becoming a shootout.
"Houston would love to play fast, get the game in the 90's and shoot a lot of balls and really speed up play," said UMass coach Derek Kellogg, who played Houston every year as an assistant coach with Memphis. "They're very good at doing that. We have to be smart with how much we run and how frequently we try to get in a shooting match with them."
Lowe agreed.
"We definitely want to control tempo. We never want to play at another team's speed," Lowe said.
Losing star guard Robert McKiver, who graduated last year, hasn't slowed Houston's numbers. The Cougars (7-2) are averaging 78.4 points led by Kelvin Lewis' 18.4 per game. Newcomers Aubrey Coleman and Marcus Cousin have helped Houston on the boards. Coleman, a 6-foot-4 junior college transfer, just captured his second straight Conference USA Rookie of the Week. He's averaging 17.7 points and 7.0 rebounds. Cousin, a transfer from Seton Hall, is averaging 13.8 points and 9.9 boards.
NOTES - Junior Ricky Harris, who moved into 37th place on UMass' career scoring list with 1,028 points after Saturday's game, could jump four more spots if he reaches his 20.6-per-game average, as Derick Claiborne (1,033), David Brown (1,037), Charlton Clarke (1,041) and Dana Dingle (1,043) are all within range.

OUSTON - Looking to run its winning streak to five games and end 2008 on a high note, UMass basketball ran into a buzzsaw in Houston, falling to the Cougars, 80-54, at Hofheinz Pavilion on Tuesday afternoon. After the Minutemen jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, Houston used its fast-pace transition style of play to erase that lead with a 12-2 run and never trailed again. UMass falls to 5-7 on the season, while Houston goes to 8-2.
UMass was led by Anthony Gurley's 17 points. Ricky Harris added 11, while Luke Bonner had nine points, all on 3-pointers. Chris Lowe, who finished the game with three points, was hampered by foul trouble that limited him to just 21 minutes.
Houston was paced by Qa'rraan Calhoun's career-high 26 points. Kelvin Lewis added 20 points for the Cougars, while Aubrey Coleman scored 16 and grabbed 12 rebounds.
UMass started the game strong, with a Harris 3-pointer serving as the game's first points as the Minutemen took an 8-2 lead two minutes in.
Houston answered by going on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes, using quick transition points to take a 14-10 lead with 13:13 left in the first. The Cougars continued to build on the lead, as Aubrey Coleman's layup capped a 14-5 run that put Houston up 10, 32-22, with 6:15 left in the half.
A Gurley 3-pointer with 1:30 left in the half cut the Houston lead to six. That hoop followed a spectacular alley-oop reverse dunk by Tony Gaffney from Harris on the break, but the Cougars closed the half with a 5-1 spurt to take a 10-point lead to the locker room, 43-33. Gaffney would finish with a game-high 16 rebounds.
Gurley led UMass in the first half with 14 points, including 2-for-2 from behind the arc. The Minutemen were 6-for-15 from 3-point range in the half. Lewis paced the Cougars with 16 first half points, as he and his teammates scored 14 points off the Minutemen's 10 turnovers.
The Cougars picked up where they left off, scoring the first seven points of the second half to take a 17-point lead. The lead would reach 25 on a Lewis jumper that capped off an 8-0 run, 65-40, with 11:42 left.
A Bonner 3-pointer helped fuel a run of eight-straight points scored by UMass, cutting the Houston lead to 17, 65-48, with 8:22 to go.
Houston, who at one point didn't substitute a player for over 30 minutes, proved too much down the stretch on this day, increasing its lead to 26 before the final horn sounded.
The Minutemen return to action on Jan. 3, when they start off 2009 by hosting Vanderbilt at the Mullins Center for a 5 p.m. tip. It will be 1960's Celebration and Leaman Legacy Night as UMass basketball continues to celebrate its 100th season.
UMASS HEAD COACH Derek Kellogg
On the game
"Anytime you let a team go on a 9-0 run, and you are down at the half, it is not really what you are looking for. They (Houston) actually made a lot of tough shots today and they played a great game. They pushed it when they had the opportunity, and if it wasn't there, they didn't make bad, quick shots. They also did a great job defensively. The post gives them the presence they haven't had in the past. He can block shots and does a good job of really solidifying the defense. They look more athletic, they were quicker to the ball and they looked like the better team today."
On the second half of the game
"We were still in the game to start the second half and we can't come out and let them do exactly what they did. It was unacceptable. Houston played a great game today, probably the best game of all the games I have seen on tape. Their two wings were fantastic and their two big guys were great. Their point guard came in when their guy was in foul trouble and did exactly what was needed."
On the shots made by Houston
"They did a great job of beating us on the boards, or at least making it look like that. I thought they dominated the boards when it was pretty close. They made a lot of shots tonight. We have had some games coming up to this point where we made shots and you get on a little roll and you are confident. They played with supreme confidence this afternoon and we may have wavered at times."
On Qa'rraan Calhoun and Aubrey Coleman
"Calhoun spread the floor for them, and he made shots and played by far his best game of the year. There is something you are going to have to give up when those guys are penetrating, and were going to get to them, but we had to give them a little space, but he was knocking down threes and really spread the floor for them. Aubrey Coleman was also good in the transition. They all played their roles well and did exactly what they needed to do to win."
SOPHOMORE GUARD Anthony Gurley
On the second half
"They didn't put us in a very good position coming out. We were down by 10 at the half, and we wanted to go on a run of our own, but they just kept going on runs."
On the transition game by Kelvin Lewis
"They are a great team. After we scored, they would get the ball out fast. They were tough to guard, and they made it difficult for us to put together a string of points and make a run for us to come back."
On looking past the loss
"We have to forget about this game fast. We have another big game on Saturday against Vanderbilt. It is pretty discouraging, especially after winning four-straight, and then come here and take a loss like this. We have to keep our spirits high and try not to get down on ourselves. We will have to come ready to play on Saturday for a big game before conference starts."
HOUSTON HEAD COACH Tom Penders
On the story of the game for Coach Penders
"We're trying like crazy to develop a bench. There's a lot of ways to do that. You can experiment and run guys in and out and you could lose a few games doing that. Or, give them quality time by giving them quality time that they earn in practice. DaShaun Williams didn't play the point at all for us last year but he's been working very hard to be the backup point guard. Zamal Nixon is a very talented kid. He's been playing a combo - point and two guard. I was really happy he closed out the game strong. It gives me a good feeling going into these next few ball games that we have some depth. We have more depth up front, but I didn't want to mess around with it today. I wanted to keep the momentum and see if we could close a team out. We just didn't let them breathe. We didn't let them back into the game. Our defense was really strong."
On the fight the Cougars showed against UMass
"I don't think we fought the other night. Maybe it was Christmasitis, I have no idea what it was. We had a great win up in Toledo. They were a tough team and they had a week to prepare. We really fought up there. We have had a lot of fight and scrap, but we didn't have that the other night. I don't know what that was due too, but you will have a few games like that throughout the season. Usually you get hammered and get blown out. We didn't get blown out. We were mad. The team was really mad. We didn't talk about it until yesterday. You come out to play, but the team that comes out to fight usually wins. I guess it's impossible to do that every night. I don't know what it is."
On the game against UMass
"That was a very good UMass team that we dismantled. Defensively, we took them out of their stuff. We put on a clinic offensively. We moved the ball, only had eight turnovers and blocked seven shots. All of those stats are great. It was an effort game. We left it all out there. Our next game is at Mississippi State, so it doesn't get any easier. It will be a big game, and we're going to have to play every bit as well as we did tonight to be in the game."
On Kelvin Lewis
"We had a lot of good performances from a lot of different guys. Kelvin Lewis had a tough assignment. He had (Ricky Harris) who averages 21 points per game. All of the magazines had him and (Chris) Lowe as one of the best backcourts in the country. I don't argue with that. Last year, they tore us apart up at UMass. Kelvin just didn't let them breathe. When your leading scorer is able to shut down their leading scorer it's good. He let the game come to him. He wasn't as frantic. He's such a coachable kid. He's come a long way from last year, he's really developed.
HOUSTON FORWARD Qa'rraan Calhoun, on his big game against UMass
"Hopefully, I'll be able to do this every night now. I don't really care about the points. I just want to win and make the tournament. That's all I care about. I want to make the tournament."
HOUSTON GUARD Kelvin Lewis
On the Cougars never letting up against Umass
"We just came out with more fight today. We didn't really have any fight on Sunday. Coach (Penders) just told us to come out with fight and intensity."
On looking more relaxed on the court against UMass
"I try to stay relaxed out there. I try to let the game come to me.
UMass saw its four-game win streak come to an end on Tuesday afternoon in the final game of 2008. UMass finishes the calendar year 20-16 overall.
Tony Gaffney had 16 rebounds, his third time with 15 or more this season. It was also his ninth time in 12 games this year with double-figure rebounds. He raised his rebound mark to 12.3, fourth in the NCAA.
Gaffney also had three blocked shots and now has 4.9 per game, second in the NCAA.
Gaffney had his team-best 20th and 21st dunks in the game.
Anthony Gurley had 17 points, his second-most in a UMass uniform. He has been in double-figures in eight of 12 games this season. Gurley took 14 field goals, one off his career-high of 15 vs. Boston College earlier this year.
Ricky Harris had just 11 points, but did reach double-figures for the 11th time in 12 games this season. Harris made just 4-of-17 from the floor.
Luke Bonner added nine, his second-most of the season.
Chris Lowe played season-low 21 minutes and his fewest since 19 against Yale last season, when he was ailing with an ankle injury.
The 26-point defeat was the worst for UMass since a 76-47 loss at Temple on Feb. 1, 2005.
The 54 total points were the fewest since a 53-50 win over Saint Louis on Feb. 24, 2007.
UMass shot just 32.4 from the floor, its worst mark since 30.3 at Memphis.
UMass was just 2-of-4 from the foul line, the first time since Xavier last season, that UMass made a few as two free throws.
OUSTON - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team had hoped to close out 2008 on a high note.
Those hopes were all but gone midway through the second half of Tuesday's game against Houston.
The Minutemen fell into a 25-point hole after the Cougars went on a furious 22-7 run to start the second half, and the deficit was too much to overcome en route to a 80-54 loss before 3,623 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
UMass (5-7) saw its four-game winning streak snapped after turning in an effort that was uncharacteristic of the way it played in its six other games this month. The Minutemen shot only 32.4 percent from the field, committed 17 turnovers and took only four free throws, making two.
UMass also failed to control the tempo, allowing Houston (8-2) to run up and down the court in transition almost at will. The Cougars finished with 21 fast-break points.
Houston "actually made a lot of tough shots today and played a great game," Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said. "They pushed it when they had the opportunity, and if it wasn't there, they didn't take bad shots. They looked more athletic, they looked quicker to the ball, and they looked like the better team today."
Despite having senior point guard Chris Lowe and sophomore forward Matt Glass hampered by foul trouble and leading scorer Ricky Harris struggling with his shot, UMass hung tough in the early going and trailed 43-33 at halftime.
The Minutemen stayed in contention in the first half mostly because of sophomore guard Anthony Gurley, who scored 14 of his team-high 17 points in that period. But the wheels quickly fell off after UMass returned from the locker room.
Cougars senior center Marcus Cousin started the run with a layup, and forward Qa'rraan Calhoun hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 15. Two possessions later, Aubrey Coleman (16 points, 12 rebounds) dropped in a layup to give Houston a 50-33 lead.
Harris stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer, but Calhoun responded with one of his own to regain the momentum for the Cougars, who never let up.
"You can't come out and let them do exactly what they did to start the second half and consider that acceptable," Kellogg said.
Calhoun and guard Kelvin Lewis were thorns in the sides of the Minutemen all afternoon. Calhoun finished with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting (4-of-8 from behind the arc) and Lewis, who was deadly in transition, had 20.
"They were tough to guard," Gurley said. "They made it very difficult for us to put together a string of points and actually make a run for ourselves to come back."
The UMass offense was hampered by the presence of Cousin (five blocks) in the middle. No player was affected more by the Cougars' defense than Harris, who finished with only 11 points on 4-of-17 shooting.
Tony Gaffney had 16 rebounds and three blocked shots, but scored just six points.
With its final nonconference game at 5 p.m. Saturday against Vanderbilt at the Mullins Center, the Minutemen do not have much time to reflect on this loss.
"It is pretty discouraging, especially after winning four straight, and then come here and take a loss like this," Gurley said. "But we have to keep our spirits high and try not to get too down on ourselves. We will have to come ready to play on Saturday because that's another big game right before conference starts."

t wasnt just Fan Appreciation Day at Hofheinz Pavilion. It was basketball appreciation day for the Houston Cougars.
An 80-54 victory against the Massachusetts Minutemen in hand, the Cougars felt free to like basketball and themselves again.
A crowd of 3,623 stood and cheered as the final seconds of the final game of the calendar year ticked off the clock on Tuesday afternoon. Cougars guard Aubrey Coleman and forward Qarraan Calhoun hopped up and down at the free-throw line, exchanging smiles and chest bumps.
Just two nights earlier, Cougars coach Tom Penders and his players walked off the same court with scowls after a 71-67 defeat against Iowa State.
If you dont have fun out there, you cant win games, said Cougars guard Kelvin Lewis, who scored 20 points while playing lockdown defense on UMass scoring leader Ricky Harris. Coach said, Have fun and be loose, and thats what we did.
The Cougars (8-2) had their way with a UMass team that came in with a four-game winning streak. On offense, the Cougars shot 47.8 percent, had three players score in double figures by halftime and committed only eight turnovers.
On defense, the Cougars forced 17 turnovers, blocked seven shots five by Marcus Cousin and hounded UMass (5-7) into shooting 32.4 percent.
Thats a good UMass team, and we dismantled them, Penders said.
Calhoun led UH with a career-high 26 points, making four of eight three-point shots. Coleman had 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals to go with his 16 points. Lewis made 8-of-13 shots while forcing UMass scoring leader Ricky Harris into 13 misses on 17 attempts.
The Cougars did it all with freshman starting point guard Desmond Wade playing only three minutes. Wade, who turned an ankle against Iowa State, had two fouls and a turnover before giving way to senior DaShaun Williams. In 37 minutes, Williams had eight assists, seven rebounds and no turnovers.
Today, we had a little fight in us, Calhoun said. We didnt come out with fight (against Iowa State). Thats why we got this victory today. They werent ready.
Again and again, the Cougars got down the court before UMass could get back on defense, finishing with a 21-6 windfall in fast-break points.
We were mad, Penders said. You come out to play, but the team that comes out to fight usually wins.
With Lewis erupting for 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the first half, Houston took a 43-33 lead into the dressing room. Barely eight minutes into the second half, the Cougars had a 65-40 cushion.
Im a lot better, Penders said, than I was two days ago.
