MHERST - University of Massachusetts freshman guard Freddie Riley is far from a complete player at this stage of his career.
Riley, who missed the last four games with a torn meniscus in his right knee, freely admitted that his defense and shot selection need to get better.
But the Minutemen shot the ball poorly, especially from long range, in their last two losses to Boston College and Davidson. So UMass (6-7) will gladly welcome the sharp-shooting Riley back to open Atlantic 10 play against Fordham at 7:30 tonight at the Mullins Center.
"It feels great to be finally ready to play," Riley said. "It was tough sitting out. I play kind of a big role in the offense so it was tough sitting out, thinking I could help the team.
"I think they missed me a bit," he added. "Most of my strength is back. I just have to get in shape."
Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said he is glad to have Riley back.
"That will help us. The one thing he does is shoot," Kellogg said. "He just needs to learn how hard he has to play and what's a good shot."
Riley said he's been taking his coach's advice seriously. "My main focus been getting my defense better. My offense is going to come," he said.
Kellogg, who has mixed up his starting lineup all season, said he was not sure who would be on the floor at tip-off tonight. Ricky Harris, who came off the bench against Davidson, will be back in the starting lineup with Anthony Gurley, Sean Carter and Terrell Vinson.
The final spot could be freshman Javorn Farrell, who made his first career start against Davidson and had four points and five rebounds. But Farrell has battled a foot injury and could be limited. If not Farrell, Gary Correia or David Gibbs could start.
Kellogg said he hopes Farrell gets healthy quickly because his role will grow.
"It's hard when you're injured," Kellogg said. "As soon as he gets back to 100 percent and can go as hard as I need him to in practice, his role will continue to expand."
Farrell said he is glad to catch Kellogg's eye.
"It feels good because all the hard work I've put in, it feels like I'm being rewarded for it," Farrell said. "It's always good to get more minutes on the court. They want me to step up, play a lot of defense and go to the boards. They want me to be more of a hustle guy right now."
While the Atlantic 10 has been better than expected as a whole, the same can't be said for its Bronx entry. The Rams will arrive in Amherst on a five-game losing streak in the midst of tumultuous 2-10 season.
Their best returning player, Jio Fontan, started the year with the team reluctantly as Fordham blocked his attempts to transfer after the season. He played in the first five games before quitting and will transfer to Southern California.
He was not the only Ram headed to the exit. Shortly after Fontan departed, Fordham fired coach Dereck Whittenburg and replaced him for this season with assistant Jared Grasso. At 29, Grasso is the youngest head coach in the country.
Fordham starts three freshmen led by 6-foot-7 Chris Gaston, whose 18.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game make him a leader for the league's rookie-of-the-year honors. Senior Brenton Butler is averaging 14.7 points.
But the highlights stop there for the Rams who are last in the league in scoring (63 points per game) and 13th in points allowed (74.8).
HONORING ELLERBROOK - UMass Hall of fame member Ray Ellerbrook of Northampton will be honored at halftime of tonight's game.
Ellerbrook, an All-Yankee Conference selection in both baseball and basketball which he played at UMass from 1967 to 1970, was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in October.
Ellerbrook currently is the executive director of Look Memorial Park in Northampton.
HARRIS CLIMBING - Harris needs seven points to pass Donald Russell (1,558 career points) and move into seventh place on the UMass career scoring list. No. 6 is Tony Barbee at 1,643.

MHERST, Mass. - Ricky Harris banked home a jumper with 2.9 seconds remaining in regulation to lead UMass past Fordham 78-76 on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. Fordham erased a 13 point UMass lead before Harris hit the game-winning bucket. Brenton Butler led all scorers with 31 points to go along with six assists.
Harris had 21 points and six assists on the night, moving up to seventh place on the UMass all-time scoring list, passing Donald Russell. Anthony Gurley had 15 points to go along with five rebounds, while Hashim Bailey pulled down a career high 13 boards and tied a career high with nine points.
UMass led by five when Chris Gaston (16 points, 14 rebounds) scored and was fouled with 40 seconds left. He missed the free throw allowing the Rams to come up with the rebound and Gaston hit a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left, tying the game at 76. The Minutemen held for the final shot before Harris drove, pulling up at the free throw line and banking in a jumpshot with 2.9 seconds left. The senior guard then came up with a steal as the horn sounded, securing the victory.
The Minutemen jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but the Rams came charging back with a 13-2 run over 4:34 that gave them a 13-8 lead just over six minutes into the game. UMass took the lead back at the 8:11 mark on a 3-point play by Bailey that was part of a 10-0 Minutemen run in which they held the Rams scoreless for a span of 3:27 to take a 29-23 lead with 6:46 left in the half. The UMass lead reached as much as eight before the teams went to the locker rooms with the Minutemen leading, 40-34.
Gurley led the Minutemen in the first half with 10 points, six of which came at the charity stripe. Butler paced the Rams in the opening 20 minutes with 12 points. Fordham shot 39.5 percent, while UMass shot 35.9 percent and held the edge on the glass, 28-23.
Just under four minutes into the second half, Harris scored five straight points to give UMass the first double-digit lead by either side, 52-42. The lead reached as much 13, 62-49, on a Bailey layup at the 10:28 mark.
Butler then started a 16-3 Fordham run in which he scored 11 points including three 3-pointers to erase the UMass lead and tie the game at the 7:15 mark, 65-65.
A 3-point play by Harris followed by a 3-pointer from Freddie Riley, in his first game back from a knee injury, quickly put the Minutemen back up by six, 71-65, with 5:27 to go.
Fordham began to foul as the clock went under two minutes, but the Minutemen made the front end only of three straight trips to the free throw line.
The Minutemen return to action on Sunday when they host La Salle at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. Opening tip is slated for 2 p.m.
- UMass is now 6-1 in home games this season and has won six games in a row at home including the win in Boston at TD Garden, which was a home game.

Derek Kellogg opening statement
That is three one or two point games out of our last four so I guess our guys are getting good experience at late game situations. I thought for a minute there that we might pull away from Fordham, we went up 13 or 14 points at one point and then all of the sudden the kid Butler started hitting threes from everywhere. Some of the shots were ones that I would live with but when others started going in we decided to try and trap him and he just stepped back and hit another one. He single handedly put them on his back and carried them. We made some plays there towards the end and we were fortunate enough to win one and come away 1-0 in the conference. That was the best I have seen Fordham play all year.
Coach Kellogg on the match up of Ricky Harris and Brenton Butler
They took a lot of shots between them. Rickey was 2-10 at the half and I think he went 5-8 in the second half and he played a much better game. I was happy that he had six assists because the ball was a little sticky and he did a nice job of getting the other players involved.
Coach Kellogg on the last play
That was the plan A all the way. Some coaches would have called a time out there, but I wanted to get the ball in to Ricky's hands and he already had it. I didn't want to give them a chance to set their defense. Not that the shot was great, but there were two other guys who were wide open so he could have passed if he wanted to. He doesn't do that too much in that situation.
Ricky Harris on the final play of the game
Basically I just wanted to get the ball. Coach told me he wanted me to have the ball in my hand in that moment and I just wanted to have the ball. They were face guarding me the whole night and I was able to find a way to get open and hit a tough shot.
Ricky Harris on the quality of the win
It was a good win after we lost last week to Davidson and it is a good start off to conference play. For now though we could do better. That was a good team, their record doesn't really show it but I felt that we could have done a lot better. There are still things that we could improve on, our free throw shooting and rebounding. It was a good win and a chance for the freshman to get their feet wet in the A-10 conference.
Big City Hashim Bailey on several big rebounds towards the end of the game
I feel like every time I can get into the game I can contribute, make my team better. Coach is always saying go out there and play as hard as you can. I know that I am not in the best of shape so I go out there to give the best of my ability every time I touch the floor.
Bailey on his diving rebound late in the game
That was the biggest play, a game winning play right there, diving to the floor to get the ball to Freddie (Riley) for the trey ball.
Freddie Riley on how he felt his first game back after missing four games with a knee injury
I was comfortable both physically and mentally. I am just trying to get back in shape but I did feel comfortable out on the court.
Riley on his three point shot after Bailey's diving rebound
I knew it was a big shot. I try not to think about it. If you think about it too much you are probably going to miss it.
Bailey on hitting some big free throws early in the game to set the tone for his night
I am struggling on free throws. I don't know what it is, I used to be a good free throw shooter. I don't know what is going on, I think I am getting stronger in the weight room, but it feels good to hit a couple of free throws.
MHERST - The only game that figured to be a easy win in the Atlantic 10 conference for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team did not turn out that way Wednesday night.
A driving bank shot in the lane by Ricky Harris with three seconds left saved the Minutemen from a disastrous loss as they escaped with a 78-76 win over lowly Fordham at the Mullins Center.
"Coach told me he wanted me to have the ball. I found a way to get open and hit a tough shot," said Harris, who admitted he was not trying to bank it. "It's a good win and a good start to our conference play. But I feel like we could do better."
The Minutemen led by as many as 13 points in the second half, but could not close out the struggling Rams (2-11, 0-1 A-10).
Three missed free throws in the last 65 seconds were almost costly, but when Harris missed his second with 49.3 seconds left the Minutemen led 76-71 and appeared to still be in control.
But Ram freshman standout Chris Gaston drove to the basket and laid the ball in despite being fouled by Terrell Vinson to cut the deficit to 76-73.
Gaston appeared to miss the free throw on purpose and the rebound went to Khiry Gordon, who fed Brenton Butler. The senior guard, who had torched UMass the whole game, did not hesitate and knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to tie the game at 76-76 with 35.5 seconds left.
Fordham tried to call time-out, but the referees did not notice and UMass brought the ball into the frontcourt.
Harris waited until the clock was under eight seconds before making his move on Lance Brown. Harris stopped in the lane to gain space and put the ball off the glass and in.
"I felt like I could get by him," Harris said. "He's a freshman and I'm a senior. I've got more experience than him and I just wanted to make a play.
Fordham tried a touchdown pass for a last shot, but Harris picked it off.
"We were fortunate to come away with a two-point win," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "That was the best I've seen Fordham play all year. It's immaturity when you get up by 13 and let a team claw their way back. We have to work on that and continue to get better."
UMass (7-7, 1-0 Atlantic 10) is back in action at 2 p.m. Sunday for its annual game in Springfield when it hosts La Salle at the MassMutual Center.
Harris, who moved into seventh place on the Minuteman career scoring list, led UMass with 21 points and six assists.
Anthony Gurley added 15 points and five rebounds.
Butler finished with 31 points for the Rams, while Gaston added 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Hashim "Big City" Bailey turned in another productive game for the Minutemen with nine points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
"Him coming up with those offensive rebounds and defensively I thought he helped us tremendously," Kellogg said. "He had nine points and 13 rebounds in 14 minutes. Imagine if he got in shape."
The biggest of those 13 boards came with 5:27 remaining and UMass leading 68-65. Bailey dove on the floor to save a miss by Terrell Vinson and fed Freddie Riley from a prone position. The freshman guard knocked down a 3-pointer to keep UMass in control.
"That was a game-winning play," Bailey said. "I try to go hard every time I touch the floor."
But the Rams kept attacking to set up the final sequence.
"We kind of took the pressure off them. They made a good run and tied the score up," Harris said. "We had to pick our game back up."
NOTE: Former Minuteman Tony Gaffney was among the 3,557 fans in attendance. Gaffney, who was injured playing in Israel, is healthy again and has gotten some interest from NBA teams for a potential 10-day contract.

MHERST - UMass and Fordham opened Atlantic 10 basketball play with a point guard showcase last night at the Mullins Center.
The game featured a display of clutch shooting and playmaking by the Minutemens Rick Harris and Brenton Butler of the Rams. Harris got in the final say when he banked in a jumper with three seconds remaining, giving UMass a 78-76 win.
Basically I just wanted the ball, Harris said. Coach (Derek Kellogg) told me to get the ball, he let me know he wanted the ball in my hands at that moment I wanted the ball also. I got the ball and they were facing me the whole night. I found a way to get open and made a tough shot.
The statistical breakdown between Harris and Butler added up to a numerical push in a game decided by the one field goal. Harris connected on 7-of-18 shots for 21 points with six assists, four steals and two rebounds. Butler countered with 12-of-23 shooting from the floor, including a 6-for-11 effort from behind the arc, for 31 points with six assists and four rebounds.
The game would have been a dull defensive struggle without the contributions of these two dynamic senior ballhandlers with an A-10 history.
Brenton is good and Ive known him since my freshman year, Harris said. Hes a good player, he plays hard every night. Hes a good shooter and a good leader for that young team.
Neither the Minutemen (7-7) nor the Rams (2-11, 0-8 on the road) mounted a significant run during the game, but the final five minutes was worth the tariff for the crowd of 3,557. UMass went up 71-65 with 5:26 to play on a 3-pointer from Freddie Riley, who had missed the previous four games with a minor knee injury, but Harris and Rakim Bailey (13 rebounds) combined to make 3-of-6 free throws in the final 1:35.
With the misses from the line leaving a window of opportunity open, Fordham freshman Chris Gaston drove the lane for two points to make it 76-73 with :39 left. Gaston was fouled on the drive and missed the free throw, but Khiry Gordon got the rebound and fed Butler on the perimeter. Butlers 3-point rainbow found net to tie the game with 36 seconds to play.
Thats three one- or two-point games in our last four so I guess our guys are getting good experience in late-game situations, Kellogg said.
UMass got the ball up the floor following the Butler trey, and Kellogg barked orders with what remained of his voice.
We were Plan A all the way and a lot of coaches may have called timeout in that situation, Kellogg said. If I called timeout Im getting the ball to Ricky Harris, and he already had the ball.
