t doesnt appear to be getting any easier for the Massachusetts mens basketball team.
After suffering its fourth straight loss Wednesday night to St. Bonaventure, 70-69, at the Mullins Center, the Minutemen face another nationally ranked team Saturday at 4 p.m., when they travel to No. 25 Baylor in their final non-conference game of the season.
Its a total building process, to have so many young guys, we just have to stay focused on the task at hand which is to build this program and to just get better everyday, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said regarding the game. In the process of doing that, you would like to add some Ws and win some close games, because weve been in a bunch of them, and Im anticipating many, many more tough games, and ones that will come down to the wire, and as we mature, we will pull them out at the end.
Freshman guard Freddie Riley missed a 3-point attempt that wouldve won the game for UMass (7-11, 1-4 Atlantic 10), who came back from a 10-point deficit with four minutes to go in the second half. Senior guard Ricky Harris sprinted the ball up the court, drove and then dished to Riley on the right wing, but the ball hit the rim and fell short.
Hes fine, I mean, shooters, I dont think those things bother them too much, Kellogg said. I know hes looking forward to the next time hes put in that situation, and Im confident that the next time, he will knock it down.
Riley leads the team in 3-point field goals made (39), good for a 2.8 made average, while posting a .375 3-point percentage.
UMass has faced a tough schedule, including No. 6 Michigan State and No. 16 Temple earlier this season. The Minutemen fell to the Spartans back on Nov. 28, 106-68, in the Legends Classic Championship, while dropping their third straight conference contest against the Owls last Saturday, 76-64.
You know this gets us on national television, but its probably not a great time to be playing a team with how theyre playing and where they are rated, Kellogg said of the Temple game. But at the same token, it gives our guys one more test to see where they are against I think one of the top-15 teams in the country.
The Bears (14-3, 2-2 Big 12) are coming off a near upset at No. 3 Kansas Wednesday night, losing 81-75. Junior guard LaceDarius Dunn had 27 points in the effort, while Tweety Carter added 17.
They have a ton of height, and they play a ton of juniors and seniors and guys that were highly rated out of high school, Kellogg said, noting that he recruited a number of players to come to Memphis, where he was an assistant prior to UMass.
Baylor starts Josh Lomers (7-feet), Ekpe Udoh (6-10) and Anthony Jones (6-10) in its backcourt, and has a pair of quick guards in Dunn and Carter.
The Bears have had success against A-10 opponents so far this season, beating Xavier 69-64 behind 27 points from Carter.
If the Minutemen are given the opportunity to take open 3-pointers, they must convert them, as the Bears allow an average of 7.6 three-pointers per game.
I think going 4-for-23 with an outside shooting team is not conducive to winning basketball, so we have to get in the gym, and shoot more, Kellogg said.
The game will be air on ESPNU. It will be UMass 100th all-time game against a ranked opponent. The Minutemen have gone 30-69 all-time against Associated Press Top 25 teams.

MHERST - For the past three seasons, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team has been a dangerous opponent when they have been paid to play on the road.
During 2006-07, Louisville paid UMass to travel to Freedom Hall and was upset 72-68.
A year later, Syracuse brought the Minutemen in for a TV game at the Carrier Dome with no return trip to Amherst and UMass escaped with a 107-100 win in overtime.
Last season then-No. 25 Kansas was the victim of a 61-60 upset by the Minutemen in Kansas City, Mo., on Dec. 13, 2008.
UMass will try to continue its streak of taking the money and a victory Saturday at 4 p.m. against No. 25-ranked Baylor (14-3) at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.
The contest is the final nonconference game for UMass (7-11), which plays in Texas in the midst of a four-game losing streak.
As a heavy underdog, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he hopes his team will play like it had nothing to lose.
"We can go out and continue to try to improve and get better and at the same time play a little loose and try to shoot the ball with some confidence," he said. "We want to come out and play tough against a team that a lot of people wouldn't expect you to win against."
Kellogg said he likes the game, but wishes it was a little closer to Amherst.
"It's a good game because we're on TV (ESPNU). We get to play against a top-25 team so it's a good game all around," he said. "The only thing I don't like is that it's a little further away than I would like it this time of year."
The Bears opened the season 13-1, but lost two of their last three. In one of those defeats, Baylor stayed with No. 3 Kansas for much of the game before falling 81-75.
Baylor is third in the Big 12 in scoring defense at 63.5 and fourth in scoring margin (15.5). Perhaps most concerning for UMass is that the Bears lead their conference in blocked shots at 7.53 per game led by Ekpe Udoh, who is fifth in the country with 4.2 blocks per game.
The Minutemen have struggled lately against shot-blockers. Darrius Garrett of Richmond swatted away 14 UMass shots on Jan. 13, while Andrew Nicholson of St. Bonaventure and Aaric Murray of La Salle had five and four blocks, respectively.
"It's a little daunting because we have a propensity to get our shots blocked," Kellogg said.
Udoh, who is 6-feet-10, has been one of the nation's best big men this year averaging 13.8 points and 11 rebounds per game to go with his blocks.
LaceDarius Dunn leads Baylor with 19.5 points per game, while 5-foot-11 point guard Tweety Carter has averaged 15.7 points and seven assists per game.
FAMILIAR FACES 1 - Ian McCaw will be rooting against UMass men's basketball team on Saturday and that doesn't happen often.
The former UMass athletic director in 2002-03 has held that same position at Baylor for 6 years. But he still keeps track of athletics at UMass, where he also attended graduate school.
"I have strong affection for UMass. I pull for them in every game in every sport except for this Saturday," he said. "I have some really fond memories of my time at UMass, both when I was a student and as an AD. I'm proud of the program and the job all the coaches and administrators do."
McCaw left UMass abruptly after being courted by Baylor, which was trying to clean up its image after a much-publicized scandal when one of its former men's basketball players was charged with murdering an ex-teammate. Under Scott Drew, the Baylor men's basketball team has been revitalized. It advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and the National Invitation Tournament last year.
"We walked in at a challenging time coming off of the basketball scandal, but coach Drew has done an amazing job to have a nationally ranked program," McCaw said.
The athletic department as a whole is thriving.
"Both basketball programs are ranked," McCaw said. "In the past five years we've won a couple of national championships (men's tennis, women's basketball) and won 23 Big 12 championships. Only Texas has won more in our conference.
"We've had a five-year fund-raising campaign that raised 94.5 million dollars," he added. "That's done a lot for our facilities and has helped elevate our programs."
Playing this game could help elevate the Minutemen's program. According to UMass spokesman Jason Yellin, the Minutemen are receiving approximately $110,000 to play this game which will be televised on ESPNU. McCaw said Baylor was not specifically looking to schedule the Minutemen, but he is glad it worked out that way.
"The game was scheduled late. We were looking for a competitive game and an opportunity for television on this date," McCaw said. "It all came together. We also talked to Saint Joseph's. We found out UMass had the opportunity to make it work and it's always fun to play a former school. It'll be fun to see some people and catch up with some people."
When McCaw was originally hired at Baylor, former UMass assistant athletic directors Bill Chaves and Nick Joos joined him in Waco. Joos remains at Baylor as senior associate athletic director for external relations. Chaves has since been hired as the athletic director at Eastern Washington.
FAMILIAR FACES 2 - The Minutemen's older players will see a familiar face on the Baylor sideline.
Tim Maloney, associate head coach under Travis Ford at UMass, is the director of basketball operations at Baylor.
This will be the second time in three games that Maloney has competed against someone he worked with at UMass.
On Jan. 16, Baylor beat Ford's Oklahoma State team 83-70. The Cowboys' staff features not only Ford but former Minuteman assistant coach Steve Middleton and director of basketball operations James Altman.
Assistant coach Adam Ginsburg, who coached with Ford at UMass, stayed on with Kellogg in the same position.

ACO, Texas - Playing in its 100th all-time game against a ranked team, UMass lost to No. 25 Baylor, 71-45. on Saturday at the Ferrell Center in a rare January non-conference game. Senior Ricky Harris moved to sixth in career scoring (1,656) at UMass with 15 points to pass current UTEP coach Tony Barbee (1,643). Freshman Terrell Vinson (14 points and 12 rebounds) had his second career double-double.
Baylor had three players scored in double-figures. Tweety Carter and Ekpe Udoh each scored 23 points. LaceDarius Dunn, the Big 12's second-leading scorer netted 15. UMass stands at 7-12 overall, while the Bears move to 15-3 overall.
UMass had a tough shooting day, making just 24 percent of its shots from the floor (15-of-62). But the Minutemen did outrebound the Big 12 team, 42-33. In addition to Vinson's 12 boards, Hashim Bailey had 11 rebounds, his third career-game in double-figure boards.
It was UMass fewest points since losing to Xavier, 64-44 on Feb. 14, 2004.
Down by as many as 16 late in the first half, UMass came out strong to begin the second half scoring the first six points to cut the deficit to eight, 34-26 on a 3-point play by Harris. But Baylor answered with 11 points in a row to take a 45-26 lead with 15:08 left in the game. Tweety Carter's 3-pointer gave the Bears their largest lead of the game to date at 19 and forced UMass to call timeout.
Baylor maintained its lead of at least 15 points for the rest of the game. They look a 27-point lead at 64-37 on a steal and subsequent dunk by Udoh with 5:26 left in the second half.
Despite a tough shooting first half (19.4 percent), the Minutemen crashed the boards hard and trailed 34-20 at intermission. Led by Vinson's seven rebounds, UMass outrebounded Baylor, 25-15, over the first 20 minutes. The Minutemen tried to play a deliberate style using most of the shot clock each possession. Baylor's Tweety Carter and Udoh each had 13 in the first half.
Baylor went on a 12-0 run over a span of 7:30 as the Minutemen missed seven field goals midway through the first half. Tweety Carter and Dunn each canned treys to put the Bears up 21-9 with 7:42 left in the first half.
UMass last beat a ranked team when it knocked off then-No. 25 Kansas, last season, 61-60, on Dec. 13, 2008. That was also UMass' last game against a Big 12 team, one that also happened to be ranked No. 25. The Minutemen now stand at 30-70 in its 100 games against AP ranked teams.
The Minutemen finished a stretch of four road games in a five at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. UMass returns home for its second straight Saturday game televised on ESPNU as the Minutemen host Charlotte on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.

Head Coach Derek Kellogg
Opening Statement
Baylor is a very good team. I have played and coached a lot of different NCAA tournament teams and they are a good ball club. If they continue to improve and get better, I think they can make a nice run in the NCAA tournament. Their length and their size bothered us. We turned the ball over quite a bit and they blocked a bunch of shots. I thought at times our inexperience came through. We did a very good job on the boards tonight. I thought we fought and scrapped. I thought we looked like an inexperienced team with so many young guys out there, but Baylor was the better team.
On Ekpe Udoh
"That is a nice guy to pick up as a transfer. I mean as much as anything he dominates the game by just being out there. His presence is really what separates him. You always have to be aware on both ends of the floor where he is located. He gives them an added dimension that sometimes in scheduling you dont know.
On what led to Baylors runs
"I thought Tweety Carter and (LaceDarius) Dunn played real well along with the big guy (Udoh). They are kind of a three-headed monster, but those other guys are really good also. It was a combination of some different things.
On Baylors defense
They do a good job in that zone. It allows the guards to kind of pressure the ball and play out and the big guys to stay home. I mean when you are 6-10, 7-0 and 6-11 it is tough. I thought we got it to the middle at times. I thought we had open looks and their length. Their length obviously bothered us. I didnt think our guys played terrible at times. We just didnt make a lot of the plays you have to make in a ball game.
Senior Guard Ricky Harris
On Baylors defense
"They are long and athletic which of course made the court smaller. Basically like they are a matchup zone type of defense. They kind of gave us problems, because they are long and athletic.
On the second half
"We just didnt want to give up, just keep playing hard. That is a top-25 team playing on their home court, so it is tough. We just wanted to continue to compete with them.
On outrebounding Baylor
That is one of our main focuses coming into every came. We want to rebound the ball well and hopefully that can lead to transition baskets, but tonight we really couldnt get too many.
aylor might have discovered one reason why Massachusetts is called the Minutemen.
Shooting blanks all afternoon, they barely scored more than one point per minute against the Bears.
With forward Ekpe Udoh leading a suffocating defense, the No. 25 Bears romped to a 71-45 win before 7,779 fans Saturday afternoon to set a Ferrell Center record with their 11th straight home win.
Sandwiched between games against three top 10 Big 12 teams, Baylor coach Scott Drew was relieved by how well his team responded in the nonconference game.
After a tough 81-75 loss at No. 3 Kansas on Wednesday, Baylor faces a brutal week with No. 10 Kansas State coming to the Ferrell Center on Tuesday before facing No. 1 Texas in Austin on Saturday.
I think any coach would be concerned with a game in between three top 10 opponents, Drew said. Im really appreciative of our fans giving us energy. Any time you hold a Division I team to 24 percent shooting, thats outstanding.
The Bears (15-3) limited Massachusetts (7-12) to a season-low 24.2 percent while forcing 17 turnovers. The 45 points were the fewest the Bears have allowed all season.
Udoh led the way with a terrific all-around game, collecting a career-high 23 points with seven rebounds and seven blocked shots. The dynamic 6-10 junior transfer from Michigan was almost perfect from the free-throw line, hitting 13 of 14.
Thats a nice guy to pick up as a transfer, Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg said. He dominates the game just by being out there. His presence is really what separates him. You have to be aware on both ends of the floor where he is located. He gives them an added dimension that sometimes in scheduling you just dont know.
The Bears also got plenty of scoring outside as Tweety Carter hit five of 10 treys and matched Udoh with 23 points. LaceDarius Dunn nailed three treys and finished with 15 points.
I thought Tweety and LaceDarius played real well along with the big guy (Udoh), Kellogg said. Theyre kind of a three-headed monster, but those other guys are also real good. They do a good job in that zone. It allows the guards to kind of pressure the ball and play out and the big guys to stay home.
Coming into the game as the nations leading rebounding team, the Bears were outrebounded for the first time all season, 42-33. With so many missed shots, Massachusetts grabbed 22 offensive boards to Baylors six. But the Minutemen had trouble converting rebounds as they scored just six second-chance points.
They were going after the glass, and we just didnt do a good job hitting the boards, Udoh said. Wed better not come out slow against (Kansas State coach) Frank Martins team because we could get down by 15 early.
Both teams had trouble connecting in the early minutes. The Bears grabbed a 9-6 lead when Carter nailed an outside shot before Terrell Vinson answered with a 3-pointer to tie the game with 14:59 remaining.
But the Bears reeled off 12 straight points to take the lead for good.
Quincy Acy got loose for a breakaway slam dunk before Carter hit a pair of free throws. After the Minutemen failed to score on several possessions, Carter buried a trey for the Bears.
Udoh hit a pair of free throws and then ran to the other end and blocked Ricky Harris shot. Dunn followed with a trey from the left corner to push Baylors lead to 21-9 with 7:42 left in the first half.
Coming off the loss to Kansas, we wanted to come out aggressive, Carter said. But it didnt start that way, and it was a slow game at first. We have to do a better job of coming out aggressive at all times. We have to rebound better for us to compete against a better team.
Despite some impressive play by Udoh, the Bears had trouble stretching their lead as they went into halftime with a 34-20 edge. The Minutemen scored the first six points of the second half as Sampson Carter opened with a 3-pointer.
But the Bears responded with an 11-0 run to take command for good.
Carter started the streak with a drive to the basket before Udoh sliced inside for a tip-in. Anthony Jones then drove for a basket and Udoh cut inside for another basket.
After Josh Lomers blocked Hashim Baileys shot in the paint, Carter converted a trey on the other end to give the Bears a 45-26 lead with 15:09 left in the game.
The Minutemen never threatened again.
When Ekpe blocks shots, we get some transition buckets that give you intensity and more energy, Drew said. Ekpe wanted to have a better game at Kansas, but he got into foul trouble and never really got into the flow of the game. I think its a good sign to respond with almost a triple-double.
he Massachusetts mens basketball team had its worst shooting night of the season (24.2 percent from the field, 17.2 percent from 3-point range) as Baylor overpowered the Minutemen, 71-45, with its size-up front.
Guard Ricky Harris finished with a game-high 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting while freshman Terrell Vinson came through with a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds). However, UMass (7-12, 1-4 Atlantic 10) couldnt find production from anyone else.
Excluding Harris and Vinson, the Minutemen shot 16 percent from the field. The Bears (15-3, 2-2 Big 12) shot much more efficiently (45.7 percent) while controlling the game with their size.
The loss extended UMass losing streak to five games dating back to the Jan. 10 loss against La Salle. The last time the Minutemen went on a five-game skid came at the beginning of last season, when they started with a loss to Southern Illinois on Nov. 12, 2008 and lost six straight games before eventually defeating Holy Cross nearly a month later.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said after the game that having to go up against three players nearly 7-feet tall made it difficult for his team to be effective offensively.
They do a good job in that zone, Kellogg said. It allows the guards to kind of pressure the ball and play out and the big guys to stay home. I mean, when you are 6-foot-10, 7-feet and 6-foot-11 it is tough Their length obviously bothered us.
Baylor forward Epke Udoh was the most effective of the big men as he tied guard Tweety Carter for a game-high of 23 points to go with seven blocks. He sat out last season after he transferred from Michigan, where he averaged six points and five rebounds.
This year, hes averaging 14.3 points and 10.8 rebounds for the Bears.
That is a nice guy to pick up as a transfer, Kellogg said. I mean, as much as anything, he dominates the game just by being out there. His presence is really what separates him.
The main positive for the Minutemen was rebounding. They outdid the Bears, 42-33, on the glass.
That is one of our main focuses coming into every game, Kellogg said. We want to rebound the ball well and hopefully that can lead to transition baskets, but tonight we really couldnt get too many.
Center Hashim Bailey was the other main rebounding force with 11 in 21 minutes, but scored no points on six attempts.
As much as the Minutemen controlled the glass, it wasnt enough to make up for a poor shooting night. Despite outrebounding Baylor, 22-6, in offensive rebounds, they finished with six second-chance points.
The Bears also proved to be better in transition with nine fast break points and none coming from the Maroon and White.
Even with UMass struggling, it kept the game within single digits until the seven minute, 45 second mark when LaceDarius Dunn hit a 3-pointer to put the Bears up 12 points.
The Minutemen were down 34-20 at the end of the half, but 3-pointers by forward Sampson Carter and Harris cut the deficit to eight points. Baylor rolled right back with an 11-0 run to increase the lead to 19 points.
UMass never came within 15 points the rest of the game. The Bears biggest lead came in the final two minutes when they increased their lead to 28.
Baylor is a very good team, Kellogg said. I have played and coached a lot of different NCAA Tournament teams and they are a good ball club. If they can continue to improve and get better, I think they can make a nice run in the NCAA Tournament.
The Bears mark the third ranked opponent to play UMass this season, however it has not found much success, with the closest loss coming to then-No. 19 Temple in a 12-point loss.
The last time Kellogg and Co. beat a ranked opponent was last year in a one-point victory over then-No. 25 Kansas.
The Minutemens next game is on the road against Saint Josephs on Wednesday. The Hawks are on a two-game winning streak with victories against Towson and Dayton.
Game notes
Harris moved to sixth in career scoring at UMass. He now has 1,656, passing current UTEP coach Tony Barbee (1,643). The senior captain is 95 points away from passing the No. 5 scorer Lorenzo Sutton (1,731) The Minutemens 42 rebounds were the most any team has rebounded against Baylor this season UMass 45 points were the fewest its scored in six years when it lost, 64-44, against Xavier on Feb. 14, 2004.

ACO, Texas - It was the top-25 opponent rather than a long road trip after a one-point conference loss at home that resulted in the fifth consecutive loss for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team on Saturday.
"The difficult task was, we were playing Baylor," Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said. "If we were going somewhere else, it wouldn't have been as bad."
Other than a brief burst in the second half, this one started out badly and got worse for UMass, which fell to 25th-ranked Baylor 71-45 before a crowd of 7,779 at the Ferrell Center.
"I've coached and played on a lot of NCAA Tournament teams, and they're a good ball club," Kellogg said of the Bears, who improved to 15-3 with their 11th straight home-court victory. "Their length and size bothered us.
"We turned the ball over quite a bit (17), and they blocked a bunch of our shots (11)," he added. "I thought we fought and scrapped. But I thought we looked like an inexperienced team at times with so many young guys out there."
One of those Minutemen, 6-foot-7 freshman forward Terrell Vinson, held his own and came up with his second career double-double with 14 points and a career-best 12 rebounds.
Overall, UMass (7-12) was the first team this year to outrebound Baylor, which entered the game as the national leader with a plus-11 rebounding margin.
But the Minutemen did not do enough with their 22 offensive boards, getting just six second-chance points. Junior Hashim Bailey got eight of his 11 rebounds on the offensive end, but finished with no points.
"I tell our guys, #Listen, you did a great job on the glass. Now, reward yourself when you make a nice play by putting the ball back in or finishing around the rim,' " Kellogg said. "You get it that close, you've got to finish it."
UMass was an ice-cold 19.4 percent from the field (6-of-31) in the first half, including just 1-for-12 in the paint.
Vinson hit a 3-pointer that tied the game at 9-9 five minutes into the game. But the Bears responded with a 12-0 run that included 3-pointers by guards Tweety Carter and LaceDarius Dunn, who finished with 23 and 15 points, respectively.
Minuteman senior guard Ricky Harris, who scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field, knocked down a mid-range jumper that closed the deficit to 34-20 at the break. Harris moved up to sixth on the UMass all-time scoring list with 1,656 points, passing current Texas-El Paso head coach Tony Barbee.
The second half could not have started much better for the Minutemen as Sampson Carter hit a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down, and then Harris followed with a three-point play that pulled UMass within eight, 34-26 with 18 minutes, eight seconds left in the game.
"We just didn't want to give up," Harris said. "We wanted to keep playing hard. That's a top-25 team, and playing on their court is tough. But we just wanted to continue to compete with them."
But Baylor responded with an 11-0 run that stretched the lead back to 45-26.
When the Minutemen tried to attack the rim, they were met by 6-10 junior forward Ekpe Udoh, who had four of his seven blocks in a two-minute stretch in the second half. Udoh finished with 23 points and seven boards, hitting 13-of-14 from the line.
"That's a nice guy to pick up as a transfer," Kellogg said of Udoh, who sat out last season after transferring from Michigan. "As much as anything, he dominates the game by just being out there. You always have to be aware on both ends of the floor where he's located, and he gives them an added dimension that sometimes in scheduling you don't know."
One of the biggest positives for UMass was the play of Vinson, who hit double digits in points for the first time in four games and double digits in rebounding for just the third time this year.
"I envision him being a double-double guy for us every time he's out there," Kellogg said. "I thought tonight he competed against probably one of the best front lines we'll see or have seen all year.
"And I was impressed with how he battled and scrapped and came up with those tough plays," he added. "I'm hoping he continues to do that in conference play. A double-double every night out is what I expect."
The Minutemen, who finished by shooting a season-low 24.2 percent from the field (15-of-62), will get back to Atlantic 10 Conference play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Saint Joseph's.
"I'm trying to look at some positives, because we still have a long ways to go in the season in the Atlantic 10 Conference, and I want our guys to taste some success," Kellogg said. "We outrebounded them (42-33).
"And although we didn't shoot the ball very well, I thought we got a lot of good, open looks that we just didn't knock down," he added. "For us to get better, we've got to make some of those shots and continue to do some of the things that we did well."
