he Massachusetts basketball team hopes their match-up with Duquesne Thursday night has a more successful ending than last seasons first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament.
The Minutemen (8-15, 2-7 A-10) saw their season end in 2009 at the hands of the Dukes, 91-81 in the opening round of the conference tournament, and will look to end a three-game skid in Pittsburgh, Pa., a place where they have won three games in a row.
UMass also fell to the Dukes in a regular season A-10 contest (12-11, 3-6 A-10) back on Feb. 25 of last season by a score of 94-77, despite setting a school record for most 3-pointers made (16).
The Minutemen are coming off a 93-85 road loss to Rhode Island Saturday, and have won just one A-10 game away from the Mullins Center, an 87-80 victory over Saint Josephs back on Jan. 27. UMass has played one of the toughest schedules in program history, as the game against the Dukes marks the seventh team in a nine-game span with an RPI in the Top 100.
Theyre [Duquesne] a team thats started to play a little bit better as of late, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. Theyre a team that has had some injuries, and with the loss of their point guard last year, they have a young point guard whos starting to feel his way.
The Dukes are coming off a two-game road trip with a 76-60 loss to Temple and a 70-63 victory over George Washington.
The Dukes started their A-10 schedule with four straight losses to Richmond, Saint Louis, Dayton and the Rams, before winning against St. Bonaventure, Saint Josephs and GW.
Its two teams in a similar position that really are playing a similar style, Kellogg said. Weve played great in spurts, as they have, and there have been other times where both teams havent played so well, so, its going to be a test of whos going to take care of the basketball, whos going to take better shots, and really play their game in the 40 minutes.
The Minutemen had 21 turnovers against the Rams, including 17 in the first half, despite senior guard Ricky Harris scoring a season-high 32 points.
Redshirt junior Anthony Gurley added 15 points, while forward Sean Carter added 11 points and eight rebounds, and freshman forward Terrell Vinson contributed 10 in the loss.
With his performance, Harris moved to fourth on UMass career scoring list with 1,760 points.
Junior forward Damian Saunders led the Dukes with 27 points against the Colonials, and had 18 against UMass in their first meeting last season.
Hes a great player, hes athletic and strong, and he plays hard for the whole 40 minutes, and I think thats his best trait, Kellogg said.
Saunders leads the A-10 in rebounding and steals, with 12.4 rebounds per game and 2.7 steals per game respectively, and is also 11th in scoring with 15 points per game. He is also ranked third in the nation in double-doubles (17) and third in rebounds.
Along with Saunders, the Dukes are led by junior Bill Clark, who averages 12.9 points per game, and is tied with Saunders for the team lead with 52 career double-digit scoring games.
As a team, the Dukes are third in the conference in rebounding offense, behind the Minutemen who are first.
Were going to try to take care of the ball, Kellogg said. Weve really improved in a lot of areas, rebounding the ball, defensive toughness, intensity, but we need to improve on the turnovers and transition game.
UMass is 33-23 against the Dukes all-time, including winning four of the last six meetings.

here are sometimes when a players contribution to a team goes beyond a stat-line.
David Gibbs is one of those players.
The sophomore guard averaged 2.6 points and 2.4 assists per game, while averaging nearly 20 minutes a game as a starter before breaking his left foot Feb. 2 in practice. While it might seem like the Massachusetts mens basketball team could manage without a player who doesnt put up big numbers, its Gibbs defense that has been missed by the Minutemen.
Hes probably one of the best defenders we have on our team, freshman Freddie Riley said.
Gibbs was in the top five on the team with 13 steals, and typically defended the opposing teams best player.
Since Gibbs is out for the remainder of the season, those defensive responsibilities have gone to guard Javorn Farrell, who now has five starts with the Minutemen.
His new role has been far from easy. Farrell had to defend top scorer Jordan Crawford on Xavier and an experienced Keith Cothran on Rhode Island.
On Feb. 3 against the Musketeers, Crawford was quiet for most of the night until hitting back-to-back 3-pointers in the final four minutes to give the Musketeers a commanding lead over UMass.
Gibbs absence has shown more than just on the defensive end.
Our turnovers have gone up a little bit, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. We were a little thin at the point guard spot as it was, never mind the fact that he was starting for us.
Kellogg has mixed up his lineups quite a bit, with guard Ricky Harris occasionally starting at point guard, something he experimented with during the beginning of the season when the Minutemen played Michigan State on Nov. 28.
Allowing Harris to play point guard gave Riley and Farrell more opportunities. However, Kellogg said before practice that when there are multiple freshmen on the floor, it can be difficult to be as successful as he wants.
At times, weve had three or four freshmen on the floor at the same time, which at times is not so beneficial to us, Kellogg said.
Riley (9.7 ppg) started both games in Gibbs absence and is averaging 8.5 ppg since moving into his new role.
I feel like Ive done an okay job, but I feel like I can do better, Riley said. Im just learning right now.
Junior Gary Correia is starting to see increased minutes, as well, after considering the idea of transferring last season due to a lack of playing time. He considered leaving for Boston University until Kellogg dismissed Connecticut transfer Doug Wiggins from the team and approached Correia about staying with the Minutemen.
Before Gibbs got injured, Correia saw his role increase, and now has to perform in that position with a thin pool of guards available. Correia said before practice that he appreciates having a chance to step up more, but not at the expense of losing a player for the rest of the season.
Im not happy in the manner in which [getting more minutes] came in, where were losing someone whos a valuable part of our team, Correia said. But playing is something everyone wants to do, but hopefully, by me playing more and everyone raising their game, can result in some wins.
This season, Correia has become more of a coach on the floor, and helps bring experience to a young Minutemen squad. While the losses have been frustrating at times, the junior doesnt have any regrets about staying in Amherst because of the teams potential.
UMass has been in several close games against competitive teams, including the win over Memphis and the close loss to the Musketeers. Now, Correia believes its just a matter of the younger players realizing that potential and growing up.
I feel like going down the stretch, well be able to string some wins together, Correia said.

MHERST - After a three-game stretch against some of the Atlantic 10's top squads, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team plays at Duquesne at 7 tonight in Pittsburgh and hopes to build momentum and secure a spot in next month's Atlantic 10 Tournament.
A berth in the 12-team field is far from assured. Since the league expanded to 14 teams in 2005-2006, no team has qualified for the Atlantic 10 Tournament without at least four wins. The 12th place team has won an average of 5.25 league games over that time.
Because the gap between the league's top and bottom teams is wider than in most years, it may take fewer wins to make the field this season. The Minutemen (8-15, 2-7 A-10) are one of seven teams with three or fewer league wins.
Fordham, which is winless in league play at 0-9, seems likely to finish 14th. But the other six teams are fighting to avoid finishing 13th.
A win tonight would go a long way for both the Minutemen and Dukes (12-11, 3-6). The game will be televised by Comcast SportsNet New England.
"It's a big game," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "From here on out, every game is a big game. A win would be nice.
"We're going into a pretty tough environment against a team that's starting to play better as of late," he added. "They're catching stride and we're starting to catch stride. It's a very similar situation. I feel like we're going to play well and compete and continue to battle to the buzzer."
Junior Anthony Gurley agreed.
"It's pretty big for us. We pretty much have the same record as them," Gurley said. "There's a lot of teams in our position in the league. It's a pretty big game for us, coming down the stretch trying to separate ourselves so we can get a better standing and get in a better position for the A-10 Tournament."
Freshman Javorn Farrell said the Minutemen want to earn some respect.
"Everybody on the team knows that we have a talented team," he said. "We haven't been able to put it together. We need to show everybody that we're not a joke basically.
"I feel like when we go into other places we don't get respect," Farrell added. "That's going to change in the next couple weeks."
For a while on Dec. 2, Duquesne looked like it would be part of the Atlantic 10 success story. The Dukes were 5-1 and led crosstown rival Pittsburgh late in the second half. But the Panthers rallied to win in double overtime.
Since then, Duquesne has gone 7-10 with several of the losses in heartbreaking fashion - falling at Dayton in overtime and to Saint Louis at home in double overtime.
If the Dukes was faring better, junior forward Damian Saunders might win the Atlantic 10 player of the year award, which usually goes to a player on one of the league's top teams. He leads the conference in rebounding (12.4 per game), steals (2.7) and blocked shots (3.3) to go along with a 15 points per game average.
The recently healthy Melquan Bolding (12.1 points per game) and Bill Clark (12.9 points, 6.2 rebounds) are also having solid years.
The loss of star point guard Aaron Jackson from last year's squad has slowed the Duquesne offense. The Dukes are scoring 67 points per game this season, and even with five overtime games, that has dropped from 78.9 last yearn.
The combined five conference wins between the two teams do not stop both coaches from heaping praise on the other's squad.
"Duquesne is a talented bunch, they showed it here last year and they showed it in the postseason," Kellogg said. "Saunders' numbers speak for themselves. He's doing it with a lot of hard work."
Dukes coach Ron Everhart said. "UMass is one of the more dangerous teams on anybody's schedule. They've lost some tough games, but they have a lot of guys on their basketball team that can changes games.
"We have to extend the defense out on the perimeter and protect the 3-point line because of how well they shoot it," he added. "They're extremely fast and they share the ball. They have some veteran guys out there in (senior guard Ricky) Harris and Gurley. They're a team you have to take very, very seriously and you have to play well to have success against those guys."
NOTES - The Minutemen hope Harriscontinues his recent offensive success. He is averaging 23.8 points per game in the last six contests.
Harris scored 17 points in a 91-81 loss to Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 Tournament last year.
UMass assistant coach Adam Ginsburg was an assistant coach under Everhart before going to Amherst.

ITTSBURGH, Pa. - UMass rallied from a 16-point deficit with 17:30 left in the second half and pulled off a thrilling 84-80 overtime win on Thursday night at the Palumbo Center. The Minutemen grabbed 60 rebounds, the most since the 1996 Final Four team. Ricky Harris netted 29 points while Sean Carter had 11 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Carter put home the exclamation point with a putback dunk with seconds left for a four-point win.
The Minutemen now stand at 9-15 overall, 3-7 in the A-10. The Dukes fell to 12-12 overall and 3-7 in the league.
Anthony Gurley added 20 points for the Minutemen.
Harris gave UMass its first lead in overtime on a pair of free throws with 1:22 left in the extra session at 82-80.
The 16-point rally was UMass' largest comeback win since its 22-point margin comeback at Syracuse in 2008 NIT Second Round at Syracuse. The Minutemen trailed that game 54-32 with 14:37 left in the second half on March 25, 2008.
This was UMass' first overtime win in four years. The last time UMass won an overtime game was the 2007 NIT First Round win over Alabama at the Mullins Center, 89-87 on March 13, 2007. The Minutemen had lost four extra session games in a row.
UMass rallied to win a game it trailed at halftime for the second time this season (the other being Memphis).
Saunders missed two free throws with 44.5 seconds left. Then Gurley came down the court and launched a 3-pointer which missed, but UMass got the rebound as the ball went out of bounds with 10.1 seconds left. The Minutemen had two chances in the final seconds but missed shots and the game went to overtime.
Gurley's NBA-range 3-pointer with 4:46 left put the Minutemen up 69-65, the largest margin for the team to that point. It signally a 20-point swing in the game in about 13 minutes. But Duquesne scored the next five points to retake the lead 70-69 on a lay-up by Monteiro. Monteiro then slammed home an Eric Evans runner with 1:37 left make it 72-69. Harris quickly answered with a 3-pointer with to deadlock the game at 72 all.
The Minutemen took their first lead of the game on back-to-back lay-ups by Harris to grab a 60-58 edge with 8:12 left in the second half. That continued a 26-8 run for the Minutemen.
Down 50-34 with 17:30 left in the second half, UMass went on a 15-3 run keyed by four 3-pointers in a row (two by Harris and one each by Gurley and Vinson). That cut the margin to just four at 53-49 with 13:22 left in the second.
Saunders scored his 1000th career point on a lay-up with 17:30 left in the second half.
Duquesne scored the game's first nine points and jumped out to a lead as large as 16 in the first half as the Minutemen struggled to find their shooting touch. The margin was in double-figures for the final 14:30 of the first half. UMass trailed 41-29 at halftime as Harris bombed in a 30-footer as time expired.
UMas grabbed 60 rebounds vs. Saint Joseph's on Feb. 28, 1996.
The Minutemen's next game is set for Sunday, Feb. 14 vs. Saint Joseph's at 4 p.m., at the Mullins Center. That game will air nationally on CBS College Sports.

he Massachusetts mens basketball team finally did something they have wanted to do all season: win from behind on the road.
The Minutemen (9-15, 3-7 Atlantic 10) won their second conference game on the road this season in overtime, defeating Duquesne, 84-80 Thursday night.
UMass played from behind at halftime, erasing a 16-point deficit to come back outscore the Dukes, 44-41, in the second half.
Down 54-34 early in the second half, the Minutemen went on a 15-3 run with four 3-pointers, two from senior guard Ricky Harris, one by Anthony Gurley and another by freshman forward Terrell Vinson.
Redshirt sophomore center Sean Carter paced the Minutemen with 11 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, including a put-back dunk in the final seconds of overtime to cap the victory. Senior guard Ricky Harris had another impressive outing, adding 29 points on 10-of-22 shooting from the field and going 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Redshirt junior guard Anthony Gurley had 20 points off the bench, while the Minutemen shot 46 percent from 3-point range and 77 percent from the line.
Junior forward Damian Saunders finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, as the A-10 rebounding leader turned the ball over three times against UMass.
The Dukes did not shot the ball particularly well, going 27-of-69 from the field and 8-of-24 from beyond the arc.
The Minutemen continued to dominate opponents on the glass, 60-33, but still struggled to hold onto the ball with 22 turnovers.
The 60 boards were the most secured by a UMass team since the 1996 Final Four team.
Saunders missed two field goals with under a minute left in regulation, as the Minutemen secured the rebound and brought the ball down the court.
Gurley launched a 3-pointer and missed, but UMass recovered and got two chances to end the game, but missed.
Harris hit two free-throws to give the Minutemen their first lead in overtime with under two minutes to play.
Along with Gurley, UMass had 29 bench points, while the Dukes had just 9. Freshman forward Sampson Carter had seven, and junior guard Gary Correia added a field goal.
This is the second overtime game the Minutemen have played this season, and their first victory of 2010. UMass fell to Richmond, 70-63, back on Jan. 13, for their first conference loss on the road.
The Minutemen snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory over the Dukes, after losing to Charlotte, Xavier and Rhode Island.
UMass takes on Saint Josephs at home on Sunday at the Mullins Center. It the Hawks, 87-80 back, on Jan. 27 for their first A-10 victory on the road, after they were in the midst of a five-game losing streak.
Harris and Vinson combined for 39 points in the victory, as the Minutemen used another key run in the second half to come away with the victory.
The Hawks are coming off a 56-52 loss to Saint Louis on Wednesday, and are currently tied with UMass at 3-7 in the A-10 record.

ITTSBURGH - The victories have been few and far between for the University of Massachusetts since Atlantic 10 play began last month.
However, the Minutemen had a win they could savor and maybe even build on Thursday night as they rallied from a 16-point deficit in the second half to beat Duquesne 84-80 in overtime at the Palumbo Center.
UMass (9-15, 3-7 A-10) snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the second time in its last 10 games.
"You can see our kids are starting to believe," Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said. "You can preach and teach as much as you want but eventually there needs to be some positive reinforcement. You can tell they are starting to feel it. They always kept believing they could win tonight even when things weren't going very well."
A 3-pointer by Ricky Harris with one minute, six seconds left in regulation tied the game at 72-72 and forced overtime as neither team scored in the final minute.
The Minutemen scored the last seven points of overtime.
With UMass trailing 80-77, a 3-pointer by Anthony Gurley from the right corner with 2:06 remaining tied the score. Harris then made a pair of free throws with 1:22 left to put the Minutemen ahead. Sean Carter sealed the victory with a ferocious follow dunk with 10 seconds to go after Gurley missed two free throws and the Minutemen whiffed on a pair of tip-ins.
"We've given so many games away this year, especially early in the season," Carter said. "It's nice to be able to come back and win a game like this."
Harris led UMass with 29 points and six assists. He is averaging 27 points over the last six games.
Gurley added 20 points off the bench and Carter had 11 points and 19 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive glass. That was the most rebounds by a Minuteman since Jim Town had 20 in 1976.
"He was all over the place," Dukes forward B.J. Monteiro, who scored a team-high 18 points, said of Carter. "We couldn't keep him off the glass."
UMass, which leads the Atlantic 10 in rebounding, held a whopping 60-33 advantage on the boards.
The last time the Minutemen had that many in a game was against Saint Joseph's in 1996, the year UMass made the Final Four.
"It doesn't surprise me," Carter said of his team's rebounding total. "If you came to one our practices, you'd know how important rebounding is. We take each other out every day trying to get rebounds. Coach Kellogg believes we should get every single rebound."
It looked like a lost cause for the Minutemen when Damian Saunders' steal and layup with 17:30 minutes left put Duquesne (12-12, 3-7 A-10) ahead at 50-34.
But UMass, which shot just 29 percent in the first half while falling behind 41-29, began to heat up.
The Minutemen ran off nine straight points, capped by Gurley's 3-pointer, to cut the deficit to 50-43 with 15:05 remaining.
UMass continued to peck away until a steal by Terrell Vinson led to a layup by Harris with 8:20 left that put the Minutemen ahead 60-58 with 8:20 to go.
There were two ties and two lead changes after that in regulation.
"We were sluggish in the first half, playing like we were tired but we never gave up," Harris said.
"We showed our resiliency," Gurley said. "We never quit."
NOTES - The win gave the Minutemen a boost in their quest to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
UMass entered the game tied for 12th, but jumped into a tie for ninth with Saint Joseph's and Duquesne. The Minutemen host the Hawks at 4 p.m. Sunday.

uquesne sprung to an early lead, let it slip away in the second half and finally stumbled for good in overtime, as the Dukes (12-12, 3-7) suffered a horrible 84-80 loss tonight against Massachusetts (9-15, 3-7) at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
B.J. Monteiro led the Dukes with 18 points and Damian Saunders had 15.
The Minutemen were paced by 29 from Ricky Harris.
Duquesne let a 78-74 overtime lead slip away.
It was the sixth overtime game Duquesne played this season --- the NCAA record is eight.
Saunders went over the 1,000 career point mark with 17:30 left in the game on a play that was a microcosm of his career thus far on the Bluff, in which he has turned defense into offense so many times. He stole a lazy Massachusetts pass under his own bucket, quickly rose up and laid it in for a basket, becoming the 33rd player in school history to eclipse 1,000 points.
The Dukes jumped all over the Minutemen at the start, advancing to a 9-0 lead and propelling that to a 26-11 advantage with 6:14 remaining before halftime.
That lead was 41-29 at halftime with the Dukes using just six players in the first half --- and all of them scoring.
Saunders led the scoring in the first half with 11 points, while the other five players who played scored between five and seven points in the first 20 minutes, providing tremendous balance.
The Minutemen used a 9-0 run early in the second half to climb back in it and, at one point, made it 53-49 with just over 13 minutes left.
Then, with 10:10 remaining, it was cut to the narrowest of Duquesne leads at 57-56.
It was then tied at 58-58 with 8:40 remaining.
Massachusetts took its first lead, 60-58, with 8:17 left.
From there, UMass took another 66-65 lead with 5:06 left, and upped it to 69-65 a few seconds later on a long 3-pointer by Anthony Gurley.
But down the stretch, in the final five minutes, it see-sawed back and forth, with neither team wanting to take full control.
hese are the kind of losses that cause coaches to lose sleep.
The 84-80 overtime loss Duquesne sustained Thursday night against Massachusetts at the A.J. Palumbo Center will be remembered as one of the most cruel in the Ron Everhart era.
"I'm just as disappointed as I could be," he said as he opened his postgame statements, the toll of the Atlantic 10 Conference loss obvious on his face and in his voice.
Duquesne let a 16-point lead it built three times, the last of which with 17:24 remaining in regulation, fritter away to a team that had lost three consecutive games and eight of its past nine.
Sure, Massachusetts senior guard Ricky Harris got hot and ended up with 29 points, 22 in the second half and overtime, as he knocked in five 3-pointers. And junior teammate Anthony Gurley came off the bench to score 20 points as he hammered in four 3-pointers.
But that wasn't all that fueled a comeback win for the Minutemen (9-15, 3-7) in a game in which B.J. Monteiro led the Dukes (12-12, 3-7) with 18 points and Damian Saunders had 15.
In the most telling statistic, the Dukes were outrebounded, 60-33.
And the five-minute overtime didn't do much to skew those numbers: At the end of regulation, the Dukes were outrebounded, 53-30.
Asked if, at some point, those numbers are an indicator not of skill, but of effort, Everhart replied, quickly and sternly, "Yes."
What Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg saw was a performance in which 6-foot-9 sophomore forward Sean Carter simply wanted it more than all those other players when the ball came off the rim.
Carter finished with 11 points and 19 rebounds, 11 of those rebounds on the offensive end. Of his five field goals, Carter had four follow-up dunks.
"He was all over the glass," Monteiro said of Carter. "We knew what we were supposed to do, we knew he could rebound. It was said all over the scouting report. But it seemed like he was getting good bounces and he was getting up there and he was finishing."
Carter in the post and Harris and Gurley on the outside served to finish off a Dukes team that looked to have so much promise in the early going.
Duquesne rocketed to a 9-0 advantage, made it 21-8 and looked to be cruising.
But as Massachusetts started to claw back, trailing by 41-29 at halftime, those components that have stricken Duquesne all season began to show.
Again, the Dukes' free-throw shooting caught up to them, as they went 18 for 28.
And again, in the biggest number other than the rebounding, the Dukes grew icy from the field over the last 25 minutes. In the second half and overtime, Duquesne made 12 of its 38 attempts from the field, while the Minutemen were busy burying 19 of 37.
On a night when Saunders became the 33rd player in school history to eclipse 1,000 points, the Dukes looked, deep into the game, as if they might celebrate after all the tumult, building a 78-74 advantage with 3:13 remaining in overtime.
That, though, like this whole night, crumbled right in front of them.
"That was a good old-fashioned fight where both teams were throwing punches," said Kellogg, a former star player with the Minutemen. "It was two teams competing at a high level and, unfortunately, one team had to lose."
Unfortunately for Everhart, it was a loss that won't quickly -- if ever -- be forgotten.
