MHERST - University of Massachusetts senior guard Ricky Harris already is sad that Saturday's game at 4 p.m. against Rhode Island will be his last at home.
He would be devastated if it is his last game overall. With one game left in the season, the Minutemen (10-19, 4-11 Atlantic 10) still have not secured their spot in next week's conference tournament. They need either an upset win over the Rams or for La Salle to beat Saint Joseph's on Saturday, to qualify for the postseason. The Explorers and Hawks also have 4-11 conference records.
If UMass and Saint Joseph's both win, the Minutemen would be the No. 11 seed in the field and the Hawks would be No. 12. If La Salle wins, the Explorers would be No. 11 and the Minutemen No. 12 regardless of how UMass does against Rhode Island.
"I'm interested to see how they react," Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said of his players. "You're playing for a potential A-10 Tournament berth. You're playing for Ricky Harris as a senior. You're playing your last home game of the season.
"There's a lot of things to get you pumped up," he added. "If you can't get up as a player for this game, are you really a player? I know Ricky is really going to try to go out with a bang on senior night and I'm hoping the rest of the team follows his lead."
Freshman forward Terrell Vinson said making sure that Harris gets to play in the postseason is motivation for the entire team.
"We want it bad. It means a lot for us to get him to the Atlantic 10 Tournament," Vinson said. "He's been a good model of how you want to be as a player and as a person."
Harris said a little momentum could propel his team a long way.
"It's important to get into the A-10 Tournament because you never know what can happen," Harris said. "If we can get a good win on Saturday, maybe that momentum will bring us into the A-10 Tournament and get us on some kind of run. When it's tournament time anybody can beat anybody. We could be that team."
Harris enters the game with 1,889 career points, needing 17 to pass Lou Roe and move into third place on the all-time UMass scoring list.
But Harris said he hopes he will be remembered for more than just scoring.
"I just want to be remembered as a guy who came every day, worked hard and was a joy to be around," he said. "I'm just thankful for the position I've been in, the people I've been around and the accomplishments I've made. It was definitely fun. I don't want it to end.
"I'm definitely going to keep track of UMass down the road," Harris added. "It's a home away from home. I'll try to get back out here as much as possible. This is like a family to me."
Kellogg said he is sorry to see Harris go.
"He's played his best basketball in the last month of his senior year which you always want to see a kid do," Kellogg said. "He has really established himself as the face of the program and an unbelievable ambassador for UMass."
Rhode Island has plenty to play for as well. At 21-7 overall, the Rams still have a chance for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. While any win helps that cause, a loss to the Minutemen would be catastrophic.
URI had dropped four out of five games before pounding fellow bubble-dweller Charlotte 80-58 Wednesday at home. That resuscitated the Rams' fading NCAA hopes.
UMass ruined Rhode Island's senior day last year and this is a chance to return the favor.
The Rams won the first meeting between the teams 93-85 in Kingston on Feb. 6 as the Rams' press forced the Minutemen into 21 turnovers.
"The last time we played them they did a good job of getting us out of what we were trying to do," Kellogg said. "The press really bothered us and set the tone for the way the game went."
MONGO DAY TOO - Harris is not the only Minuteman who will be honored as part of senior day.
While walk-on guard Lex Mongo will also be honored before the game, it might not be his last as a Minutemen. Mongo, who has played just two seasons, has eligibility remaining. He has applied for graduate school at UMass and elsewhere, and if he's back on campus he plans to join the team again. Whether or not he comes back, he's enjoyed his experience as a Minuteman.
"It's been great. I'm lucky," Mongo said. "It's been great to be a part of and I'm always going to cherish the experience. I couldn't ask for more."
Senior managers Dana Harris and Dan Mahoney also will be honored Saturday.

MHERST, Mass. - On Senior Day, Ricky Harris carried UMass into the Atlantic 10 Tournament with a game-winning lay-up with 3.5 seconds left to clinch a 69-67 victory. The UMass basketball team will play at No. 6 seed Charlotte on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., as the No. 11 after topping Rhode Island on Saturday at a raucous Mullins Center. Harris scored a game-high 28 points and moved to third in career points, passing Lou Roe (1,905) and now has 1,917.
UMass is now 11-19 overall and 5-11 in the Atlantic 10 and will play at Charlotte's Halton Arena. Earlier this season, the 49ers beat UMass at the Mullins Center, 72-58 on Jan. 30, 2010.
Rhode Island had its NCAA Tournament hopes severely damaged by UMass for the second year in a row in a regular-season finale in losing to the Minutemen. Rhode Island is now 21-8 overall and 9-7 in the conference and will host No. 12 seed Saint Joseph's.
Marquis Jones missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer which would have won the game.
Harris made two free throws with 1:09 left to put UMass ahead, 67-65. Marquis Jones then calmed made two free throws with 37 second left to tie the game again at 67 all.
Javorn Farrell tied his career-high with 12 points and Freddie Riley added 11 for the Minutemen. Rhode Island had five players in double-figures led by Marquis Jones.
UMass took a 59-57 lead on a lay-up by Farrell with 3:50 left but missed the free throw after being fouled. The Rams answered with their own 3-point conversion by Marquis Jones for the 60-59 edge with 3:42 left. Harris regained the lead again at 61-60 on a pair of foul shots with 3:32 remaining. Delroy James follow retook the Rams lead at 62-61 with 2:58 remaining. But Terrell Vinson's hook shot went in for another lead change and a 63-62 lead.
Harris ended the back-and-forth with a lay-up and a 3-point lead at 65-62 with 1:46 left. Yet again, it was answered as James canned a 3-pointer with 1:26 left to retie the game at 65 all. That tied the game for the sixth time in a five minute span.
UMass used a 12-1 run midway through the second half to take its first lead in 32 minutes at 52-50. The Minutemen toed the game at 50 on a Harris 3-pointer, the points that moved him to third on the career scoring list at UMass, passing Roe. Sampson Carter gave the Minutemen their first lead in 32 minutes making a pair of free throws with 6:08 left in the second half. The Rams were held without a field goal for about six minutes before Akeem Richmond bombed a 3-pointer to regain the Rhode Island lead at 53-52 with 5:49 left in the second half.
Farrell converted a 3-point play with 5:00 minutes left to retie the game at 55 all. Will Martell then scored on a goaltending call for a 57-55 URI edge. Harris re-tied the game at 57 all on a putback after he missed two free throws with 4:28 left in the game.
The Minutemen battled all day and were within single-digits for the first three quarters of the game, but did not lead until six minutes were left in the game. UMass cut the deficit to three in the second half on several occasions on a pair of Riley 3-pointers in the first six minutes of the second half. But Rhode Island continued to answer all game.
Rhode Island led 33-27 at halftime as Ben Eaves led the Rams with 10 points, canning a pair of 3-pointers. The Rams used an 8-1 run midway through the half finished by an Eaves lay-up with 12:21 left to take a nine-point lead at 21-12. Harris scored 11 of his points in the first half to move over the 1,900-point plateau.

Coach Derek Kellogg's opening remarks
The team played they way they did for Ricky Harris, and Ricky was able to play the way he did for the team and the fans. It was a great crowd; I thought when we were down by seven they gave us an unbelievable boost. I don't think you could ask for a better ending for the way Ricky has been as a player, person and ambassador for the program. I thought our guys fought and hung in there until the end, and we made the big plays.
Coach Kellogg on the team taking a step forward with the win
Yeah I do think they took a step forward, they never gave in. We came up with some big plays and I thought we probably could have come up with even more. The effort was there and they never quit which was huge. When you have a senior who can play like Ricky can and is, you can rely on him to make some plays.
Coach Kellogg on the effect that senior night has on the game
I thought Ricky was going to handle it well, and it gave our guys one more rallying cry to fight behind. With a young team you sometimes need to pump them up a little more. And doing this for Ricky was one more for these guys on our home floor. Now the next rallying cry is that we are in the tournament.
Coach Kellogg on winning the game for Ricky Harris
From the bottom of my heart I wanted to win this for Ricky. I kept telling the guys since our last game, lets put forth a great effort for him. It doesn't mean you are definitely going to win, but it at least gives us a good chance to win. He has meant a lot to this program; he has been a rock in a foundation for me this year with these guys. He has done whatever I have asked him to do, especially when it became clear cut what I was asking him to do. I really wanted to win for him, I know the guys did, and the fans did. That's a guy who has put a lot into this program.
URI Coach Jim Baron's statement on the game
It looked like it was two different halves. I thought the first half we came out aggressively, we did a good job of rebounding the basketball. We shared the basketball and got them to turn it over. Then the second half we had a decent lead but they came back and made plays. We didn't do a good job of defending them, that's what it came down to. We made too many erroneous fouls, and put them on the line; they stepped up and made them. You got to give Ricky Harris credit; he really stepped up and made some big plays and big shots. We knew what he was going to do. We told our guys you got to be a little smarter playing against guys like him, and understand how you have to think the game besides play the game. We still had the chance down the stretch but we missed some free throws, and they made some big plays.
Ricky Harris on last shot and senior night:
Taking a shot like that on senior night, that's big and I give credit to God and my family. Coach Kellogg put the ball in my hands and he had confidence that I could make it, and I knocked it down. I definitely thought about this moment sometime in my 22 years living, yeah. It's like a dream come true ... I am totally stunned and emotional right now.
Ricky Harris on how big a win this game was:
This game was do or die and I think Saint Joe's won, as Gary Correia told me. That would have sent us home if we didn't get the win. Like I said I give God and my coaches all the praising.
Ricky Harris on difficulty of focusing on senior day:
Honestly I was nervous before the game, more than I've been ever in my life. I was jittery because I was going into my last game thinking I had to make every shot. In the second half I started to relax, and you could tell I was nervous because I kept coming up short a lot in the first half. This is just a great feeling, the fans and community did a great job.
Ricky Harris on sense of accomplishment and the playoffs:
I think we can make a run at it because I think we haven't really been blown out by a lot of the top teams other than Dayton. With a win like that against a possible NCAA team, I think that says a lot. We can do a lot more winning if we stay positive and stay on this path.
Ricky Harris on difficulty of season:
It's been tough, obviously I wanted to win more games. I know my teammates are behind me though and that just makes it a lot easier for me. The freshmen are willing to listen and to learn.
Ricky Harris on final shot:
It was easily the biggest of my career.
Ricky Harris on Terrell Vinson's tip in shot:
It was huge. I saw him come out of no where and tip it in. He's a big time player, he's young, but he's going to be very good.
Ricky Harris on not having scores announced during the game and difficulty of the game against URI:
It was win or go home for us. We weren't praying for Saint Joe's loss. It was just win or go home. I got at least one text from each of my teammates yesterday saying not to worry that we were going to win this game ... It happened.
Ricky Harris on his teammates' passion for the victory today:
It makes me feel great that they were behind me. A lot of people could have gone away without support. I love each and every one of them from Lex (Mongo) down to Coach Kellogg and Vogel (Matt Vogel-Video Coordinator).
Ricky Harris on feeling possibility of losing:
I never had that feeling at all. I think we went up and they hit a three, and at that point I was like "uh", but I got my head back in it and we fought hard and won.
Javorn Farrell on the intensity of the game in the last few minutes:
We weren't aware that Saint Joe's had won, but we looked at this as a must win game. We did this for Ricky tonight.
Javorn Farrell on after game:
I was just happy we got this for Ricky, and we have been playing for him.
Javorn Farrell on Ricky Harris handling adversity:
I think he handled it well. He could have quit but he didn't, and he comes in day in and day out and leads. He put us on his back today.
Javorn Farrell on making A-10 Tournament:
We put the struggles behind us and Coach told us this is a new season now. I think anything is possible now.
Javorn Farrell on Coach Kellogg's technical impact:
This was one of those times when we saw Coach's frustration. We put it all on the line for him as well.
Javorn Farrell on game ending:
This was a storybook ending, definitely.
n his night, Ricky Harris hit the shot hes dreamed of his entire life.
With his team tied at 67 with Rhode Island and a berth into the Atlantic 10 tournament on the line, Harris drove into the paint before hitting a tear-drop with three seconds remaining on the clock, sealing the 69-67 victory.
Somewhere in my 22 years of living I definitely dreamt of this, playing in my backyard or playing against my little cousins, Harris said. Now its like a dream come true.
While the shot on senior night sent the Massachusetts mens basketball team into the A-10 tournament, it had far more implications than just that. The team it defeated, URI (21-8, 9-7 A-10), also could have knocked them out of the NCAA tournament picture. For La Salle, who beat the Minutemen (11-19, 5-11 A-10) on Wednesday, the shot knocked it out of the A-10 tournament.
While the contest at the Mullins Center wasnt a must-win game for the Minutemen they could have clinched a spot in the tournament if La Salle beat Saint Josephs they certainly entered the game with that mentality.
This game was do-or-die, we could either win or go home, Harris said.
During the contest, the out-of-town scores were never announced so UMass could focus on the only game they could control that would help them reach the playoffs: its own.
The plan worked, as the Minutemen overcame a nine-point deficit with 11 minutes, 38 seconds left in the game. Over the next 5:40, it would be all UMass as it would go on a 12-1 run to take its first lead, 52-50, since the second minute of the game.
The Rams would go back on top by three a minute later, but Harris would score 10 of his 17 second-half points in the final five minutes of the game including the Minutemens final six points of the game to give his team the lift it needed.
With UMass trailing 57-55, Harris stood at the line for two free throws. The guard missed them both, but instead of giving the Rams an opportunity to make it a two-possession game, Harris fought through the paint to grab the offensive rebound and lay it in to tie the game.
The senior finished the night with a game-high 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Im ecstatic that the team played the way they did for Ricky and that Ricky was able to play the way he did for the team and for the fans, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. I dont think you could ask for a better ending for the way Ricky has been as a player, a person and an ambassador for the program.
The Minutemen were also led by freshman Javorn Farrell who added 12 points in 33 minutes, and Sean Carter who had seven points and seven rebounds of his own.
UMass struck first in the contest with a jumper by Farrell from the free-throw line and led 4-2 a minute later, but the Rams took over quickly. Five minutes into the game they held a six-point lead and extended it to nine just over halfway through the half, but never extended the lead to double digits always keeping UMass within striking distance.
Marquis Jones led URIs scoring with 15 points and six assists, and Lamonte Ulmer added a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) as five Rams players finished in double-figure scoring.
The win gave UMass the No. 11 seed in the upcoming A-10 tournament, and with Daytons loss to Saint Louis Saturday evening, the Minutemen will face sixth-seeded Charlotte this Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the opening round. The Rams took the No. 5 seed and will host No. 12 St. Joes.

enior guard Ricky Harris admitted to being the most nervous he has ever been before he was honored at the Mullins Center Saturday afternoon.
Those nerves produced a game-high 28 points, seven rebounds and five assists, as Harris led the Massachusetts mens basketball team to a 69-67 victory over Rhode Island, as well as securing a spot in the Atlantic 10 tournament.
I was jittery because I was going into my last game thinking I had to make every shot, Harris said. In the second half I started to relax, and you could tell I was nervous because I kept coming up short a lot in the first half. This is just a great feeling; the fans and community did a great job.
Harris hit the game-winning layup with 3.5 seconds left in regulation to win the game for the Minutemen, while scoring his final basket at the Mullins Center in fashion.
Taking a shot like that on senior night, thats big and I give credit to God and my family, Harris said. Coach Kellogg put the ball in my hands and he had confidence that I could make it, and I knocked it down.
While the season has been full of ups and downs, Harris remained UMass most consistent player, leading the team in minutes (31.0 per game), points (19.2) and assists (89).
Its been tough, obviously I wanted to win more games, Harris said. I know my teammates are behind me though and that just makes it a lot easier for me. The freshmen are willing to listen and to learn.
Before the victory over the Rams, the Minutemen were in the midst of a four-game losing streak and knew the game was a must-win in order for UMass to continue its season.
Harris took it personally.
It was win or go home for us, Harris said. We werent praying for a Saint Joes loss. It was just win or go home. I got at least one text [message] from each of my teammates yesterday saying not to worry because we were going to win this game, and it happened.
The Hawks defeated La Salle yesterday, so if the Minutemen fell to URI, their season, as well as Harris career, wouldve come to a disappointing end.
Harris passed Lou Roe to move to third in career-scoring for UMass with 1,917 points, while keeping the Minutemens postseason hopes afloat.
He went 10-of-21 from the field and 2-of-11 from 3-point range, including 6-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Along with the rest of the Minutemen, UMass coach Derek Kellogg attributed the teams success to his best player.
From the bottom of my heart, I wanted to win this for Ricky, Kellogg said. I kept telling the guys since our last game, lets put forth a great effort for him. It doesnt mean you are definitely going to win, but it at least gives us a good chance to win. He has meant a lot to this program and he has been a rock in a foundation for me this year with these guys.
The Minutemen now head to Charlotte as the No.-11 seed in the opening round of the A-10 tournament on Tuesday evening.
I think we can make a run at it because I think we havent really been blown out by a lot of the top teams other than Dayton, Harris said. With a win like that against a possible NCAA team, I think that says a lot. We can do a lot more winning if we stay positive and stay on this path.
In order for the Minutemen to advance, they have to rely on Harris to come up with big plays like the one he converted on Saturday.
I definitely thought about this moment sometime in my 22 years living, yeah, Harris said, regarding the buzzer-beater as time expired. Its like a dream come true and Im totally stunned and emotional right now.

MHERST - Ricky Harris could not have written a better ending to his final game at the Mullins Center.
The University of Massachusetts senior guard's driving floater was the game-winning basket with 3.5 seconds left as the Minutemen upset Rhode Island 69-67 Saturday at the Mullins Center to earn the No. 11 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
"Making a shot like that if front of your home crowd on senior night - that's big," Harris said. "Somewhere in my 22 years I thought about a moment like this playing in my back yard. It's like a dream come true. I'm still stunned. This is a great feeling."
Kellogg echoed his player's joy.
"I don't think you could ask for a better ending for Ricky and the way he's been as a player and as an ambassador for the program to end his home college career," Kellogg said. "From the bottom of my heart I wanted to win for Ricky. He's been a rock and a foundation for me this year with these guys."
The Minutemen entered the game needing either a win or a Saint Joseph's loss to La Salle to get into the 12-team conference tournament.
To avoid distractions, UMass instructed public address announcer George Miller to forgo his usual practice of announcing out-of-town scores.
The Minutemen went into the game with the mind-set that they needed to win, and as it turned out they did because the Hawks defeated the Explorers 74-59.
UMass (11-19, 5-11 A-10) will play at No. 6 Charlotte (19-11, 9-7 A-10) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Rams (21-8, 9-7 A-10) are the No. 5 seed and will host No. 12 Saint Joseph's (11-19, 5-11 A-10) also at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
"This game was do or die. It would have sent us home if we hadn't gotten the win," Harris said. "We weren't praying that St. Joe's lost. We felt it was win or go home."
For a while that win seemed like a long shot as the Minutemen trailed for most of the game. With 11:41 remaining, Rhode Island forward Lamonte Ulmer stole a Sean Carter pass in the backcourt and laid the ball in to put the Rams up 49-40 as the crowd of 5,527 seemed to groan.
But freshman Javorn Farrell hit a leaner that started a 12-1 UMass run. In that surge, Harris hit a 3-pointer that tied the game at 50-50 and pushed him past Lou Roe into third place on the school's career scoring list.
Moments later Sampson Carter snared an offensive rebound off a Harris miss and was fouled. Carter's two free throws were his first points of the game and put the Minutemen ahead 52-50 for their first lead since 4-2.
Rhode Island briefly regained control with five straight points, but Farrell, who matched his career high with 12 points, answered with a 3-point play to tie the game 55-55 with five minutes left.
The teams traded leads until the final minute. Harris, who struggled from the free-throw line (6-of-11) hit two with 1:09 remaining.
At the other end, Farrell poked the ball out of Will Martell's hands, dove to try to control it but was called for a foul. Marquis Jones (15 points, six assists) hit both free throws to tie the game 67-67 with 37 seconds left.
After a UMass time-out, Gary Correia dribbled outside the 3-point line to run time off the clock. With about 11 seconds left, he handed the ball to Harris, who drove into the lane and lofted the floater that fell through with 3.5 seconds left.
After one time-out by the Minutemen and two by the Rams, they tried to get the ball to freshman sharpshooter Akeem Richmond, but he could not get open. So Jones rushed the ball up the floor and his shot from two steps behind the 3-point line was off the mark as time expired.
"Our guys hung in there and fought until the end and made some big plays," Kellogg said. "The games we've won this year we came up with those kinds of plays. I thought we put up a good effort tonight."
Harris, who finished with 28 points, seven rebounds and five assists, threw his hands in the air and shouted with delight as his teammates mobbed him.
"I was just happy that we got this win for Rick," Farrell said. "He put us all on his back today. That was a storybook ending. Him getting the game-winning shot on senior night. That was perfect."

MHERST - After hurting one Atlantic 10 men's basketball team's chance for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, the University of Massachusetts will take a crack at another as the postseason begins Tuesday.
The Minutemen (11-19, 5-11 Atlantic 10) earned the No. 11 seed in the conference tournament and will travel to Charlotte to play the sixth-seeded 49ers (19-11, 9-7 A-10) at Halton Arena at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Charlotte beat UMass 72-58 on Jan. 30 at the Mullins Center.
The 49ers moved into the sixth spot when Dayton fell 71-66 to Saint Louis on Saturday, dropping the Flyers to No. 7. Richmond defeated Charlotte 89-84 in overtime Saturday.
The winner of the first-round game between the Minutemen and 49ers will play No. 3 Richmond (24-7, 13-3 A-10) at 9 p.m. Friday in the tournament quarterfinals at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
The other first-round matchups, all at 7 p.m. Tuesday, are No. 9 Duquesne at No. St. Bonaventure, No. 10 George Washington at Dayton and No. 12 Saint Joseph's at No. 5 Rhode Island.
Temple (26-5, 14-2 A-10) and Xavier (23-7, 14-2 A-10) shared the regular-season title, and the Owls earned the top seed in the tournament with the Musketeers at No. 2. They, the Spiders and the fourth-seeded Billikens all have first-round byes.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he is glad his team has a chance to keep playing.
"I would have been really disappointed if we weren't able to play any more games," he said. "I'll be disappointed when the season does end, #cause I'm enjoying watching this team grow. I think their attitudes have been great.
"I'm glad we're going to be able to go on the road and play another game and see if we're able to take a step forward."
Senior guard Ricky Harris said he thinks the Minutemen could advance in the tournament.
"I think we can make a run at it," Harris said. "All of our games against the top teams, except for Dayton, we haven't really been blown out. We've been right there with those teams.
"I feel like we can hang with those guys," he added. "If we stay on this path we can make a run at it."
Freshman forward Javorn Farrell shares his optimism.
"This is a new season right now. We're undefeated," Farrell said. "I honestly believe we can make a run to the A-10 championship."
MILESTONE - Harris scored 28 points to lead UMass in its 69-67 win over the Rams on Saturday. He now has 1,917 career points, passing Lou Roe (1,905) to move into third place on the all-time Minuteman scoring list.
Ahead of Harris are only Jim McCoy (2,374) and Monty Mack (2,183).
ALL-CONFERENCE - Harris earned third team all-Atlantic 10 honors for the second straight year as the league released its all-conference teams and awards on Sunday. Harris was the only Minuteman honored.
Richmond forward Kevin Anderson was named player of the year, forward Chris Gaston of Fordham is rookie of the year and Fran Dunphy of Temple was selected as coach of the year.
Harris, who averaged 29.5 points, seven rebounds and five assists in two games last week, shared co-player of the week honors in the Atlantic 10 with Temple junior forward Lavoy Allen.
It was the fourth time in his career that Harris has been an A-10 player of the week.
DEJA VU - For the second straight year, UMass beat Rhode Island in the last game of the regular season. On March 7, 2009, Chris Lowe was sprung by a Matt Glass pick for a driving layup at the buzzer that gave the Minutemen at 72-71 win.
Like that loss, Saturday's defeat may have crippled the Rams' chance for an NCAA at-large bid because a loss to under-.500 UMass will be a significant drawback in the eyes of the NCAA selection committee.
Last year Rhode Island lost its first game in the A-10 Tournament to Duquesne and settled for a trip to the NIT, where the Rams beat Niagara before losing to Penn State.
