he only and last time the Massachusetts men’s basketball team faced the University of Central Florida, it was a special year.
UMass won the game, 92-70, and was in the first round of the 1996 NCAA tournament en route to the programs first Final Four appearance.
The Minutemen will look to get back to the Big Dance when it open its 2009-2010 regular season this Friday against the Knights, pitting together two of the youngest teams in the country.
The Minutemen have five freshmen on their roster, including transfers Hasheem Bailey and Sean Carter, while the Knights have six freshmen, including Michael Jordan’s son, Marcus and two red shirt freshmen.
“It will be hostile, but they are in a similar boat as us in that they have a lot of young new guys, so that sounds exactly like us,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “It will kind of be like, who’s maybe a little more prepared at this point.”
Coming off an 80-78 preseason exhibition win against Dowling last Saturday, the Minutemen will now go on the road, and will look to win its first game of a season for the seventh straight year.
In the victory against the Division II Golden Lions, senior guard Ricky Harris had 28 points, while junior Anthony Gurley added 13 in the win. Carter grabbed 12 rebounds and contributed six points. All five freshmen saw action in their first collegiate game, with Terell Vinson (four points, two rebounds), Sampson Carter (six points, three rebounds) and Freddie Riley (three points) seeing substantial minutes.
“Them being at home, first night, football weekend, 60,000 kids go to school there, so they should have a pretty good crowd,” Kellogg said. “It should be a good hostile environment for our young guys to see, this is what college basketball is all about.”
Kellogg, who was an assistant at Memphis before coming back to his alma mater, faced the Knights three times, who also play in Conference USA. While the Minutemen and Knights are similar in experience, the two teams run completely different systems.
“They’re kind of the opposite of us,” Kellogg said. They run more controlled sets, and try to slow the game down a little bit, and try to run certain plays for certain guys, so it will be kind of a contrast in styles of play.”
UMass, who brought the dribble-drive offense back to Amherst last season and who return just 36.1 average points per game from five players, will need Harris to carry the scoring load and to help incorporate the freshmen into the offense against the Knights. Harris, named to the Atlantic 10 Pre-Season first team and returning leading scorer in the conference, (18. 2 points-per-game) is the only scholarship senior on the team.
The Knights are led by Issac Sosa (8.2 ppg) and return an average of just 31.5 percent of its scoring from last year, and must fill the void left by All-American shooting guard Jermaine Taylor. Taylor, who was drafted by the Washington Wizards and was traded to the Houston Rockets, was the Conference USA Player of the Year last year and was third in the nation in scoring (26.2 ppg). The Knights beat Saint Leo, 84-65 in an exhibition on Nov. 4, and have two big time non-conference match-ups against Notre Dame Dec. 6 and Connecticut Dec. 20.
Kellogg knows the comparisons between the two teams are there, and is optimistic for his second season at the helm of the Minutemen.
“It’s two programs kind of in the same spot, and heading in the same direction.”

RLANDo, Fla. - Two years down the road, a men's basketball matchup between the University of Massachusetts and Central Florida could be a game between two-veteran laden teams with high hopes.
But tonight when both teams open their 2009-10 season at 7 p.m. at UCF Arena, it's hard to know exactly what to expect as the Minutemen and Golden Knights are two of the youngest teams in the country.
While the Minutemen feature five freshman, Central Florida will counter with eight, including Marcus Jordan, the son of NBA legend Michael Jordan.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said the game would be a good barometer for where his team is.
"With so many young guys and new guys on the team, I'm not sure when we'll actually be ready," Kellogg said. "This is not a bad test to see where we are as a team and a program."
Senior captain Ricky Harris shared his coach's curiosity.
"I can't wait to see these freshmen under the bright lights in a hostile environment," said Harris who believes the Minutemen's intensity had risen after Saturday's 80-78 exhibition-game win over Dowling. "I think they know now that they have to play harder on every possession. You can't take any plays off in college."
A year ago, coach Kirk Speraw's Knights finished 17-14 overall, but lost eight of their last 10 games and missed the postseason. They will be rebuilding this year without Jermaine Taylor, their graduated guard who averaged 26.2 points per game last season.
Sophomore guard Isaac Sosa is Central Florida's top returning scorer. He averaged 8.2 points per game last year and shot 45.2 percent from 3-point range. He's one of four sophomore starters.
Also among the second-year Knights is Jakub Kusmieruk, a 7-foot-4, 280-pound center from Poland.
He appeared in just 14 games last year, averaging 2.2 points and 1.0 rebounds, but his size alone makes him a factor. He will be the biggest player UMass faces all season.
While UMass has not played Central Florida since the first round of the 1996 NCAA Tournament, Kellogg saw the Knights as a Conference USA rival while he was at Memphis. "I'm familiar with their coaching staff and style of play," he said. "They always over achieve. They're opportunistic and they've always been that way."
Kellogg was not sure who would be in his starting lineup. Senior captain Ricky Harris is assured a spot a guard, and sophomore Sean Carter is a likely starter up front.
But after that, Kellogg will have some choices to make. Either junior Gary Correia or sophomore David Gibbs will certainly start at point guard.
Kellogg started junior Anthony Gurley at small forward in the exhibition game. Kellogg could do that again, but the second-year coach seemed a little intrigued by the idea of using Gurley off the bench.
If Gurley does not start, then two freshmen likely would. Terrell Vinson started in the exhibition game, but Javorn Farrell made the most impact against Dowling. Sampson Carter is also a possibility.
Kellogg said he plans to have a long bench to start the season.
"I'm looking at playing anywhere from nine to 11 guys. That all depends on flow of the game," said Kellogg. "I want to make sure we have some stability coming off the bench."
While Freddie Riley seems unlikely to start, the freshman will certainly see minutes in the game. The native of Ocala, Fla., will be making his collegiate debut a 90-minute ride from his hometown.
"I'm very, very excited. I can't wait to play in front of my family and friends," Riley said. "There will be like 10 or 15 people coming up. I just can't wait to play. I can't wait to get this win."
NOTES: Harris enters the game at No. 15 on the UMass all-time scoring list with 1,347 career points. He's in striking distance of some pretty elite company. No. 14 is Clarence Hill with 1,369, one behind No. 13 Julius Erving, at 1,370. Marcus Camby looms at No. 12 with 1,387.

RLANDO, Fla. - UCF took advantage of some poor UMass shooting and hit its own shots as the Minutemen fell at UCF Arena, 84-67 on Friday night. The Minutemen shot just 33 percent from the floor while the Knights made 55 percent of their shots. UMass did attempt a school record 38 3-point field goals, making 12 of them.
UCF's Isaac Sosa was on fire all night as he made 9-of-11 from the floor for a game-best 26 points. Diminutive point guard A.J. Rompza scored 13 and handed out five assists.
Senior Ricky Harris led UMass with 15 points, while freshman Freddie Riley added 12 in his debut, making four 3-pointers. Anthony Gurley scored 14 points off the bench. Freshman Terrell Vinson had a team-high seven rebounds for UMass, and scored four points before fouling out.
UCF outscored UMass 46-32 in the second half.
After two quick baskets by Gurley to open the second half, UCF continued its strong end of the first half and took a double-figure lead for the first time at 56-46 with 10:04 left in the second half. Sosa made the Knights' first 3-pointer attempted of the second half for the large lead. A 9-0 run broke a 43-43 tie as a Keith Clanton dunk punctuated the run.
UCF continued to extend its its late in the second half, leading by as many as 18.
UCF got off to a hot start as UMass struggled from the floor. The Knights built a 13-4 lead with 14:11 left in the first half as a Rompza trey gave UCF their biggest bulge of the first half.
UMass started to heat up midway through the half as the 3-pointers started to fall. The Minutemen tied the game at 15 all with 11:05 left. Riley's 3-pointer deadlocked the game for the first time since 2-2.
The Minutemen continued to extend their lead to as large as seven at 30-23 on the second 3-pointer by Freddie Riley with 7:41 left in the half. But UCF tightened up its defense and started shooting lights out and outscored UMass 15-5 to end the half with a 38-35 intermission lead.
UMass returns to action in its home opener against Cornell next Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. That game will be the first of four Legends Classic games for UMass.
Head coach Derek Kellogg on the game:
"Coming in (to halftime) I didn't realize we had taken 25 3-pointers in the first half. I don't think I had really been with a team that had taken 25 in a whole game before. So we decided at halftime to stress to take (the ball) to the hole. Early on, we did a better job (in the second half). But, I guess we took 13 more in the second half, so we took 38 3s, that's a lot of 3s.I think we have to do a better job of getting to the free throw line and getting into the defense."
Kellogg on getting help for Ricky Harris:
"Yes, but I'm not really sure who that is. Right now, we are at a crossroads where we need Ricky to play well every night and really do what he does well, which is score the ball. He took 15 shots on how many ever points he had (15). So we are searching for different things. But obviously, a lot of teams across the country are searching. If we can find it, we will make it happen."
Kellogg on UCF's defense:
"They played traditional defense where they were trying to keep us in front and they did a good job of keeping the big guy in the middle of the lane. I think they did a nice job defensively. Even though I thought our looks were somewhat decent. They are ones we take in practice everyday. Maybe there was a little fatigue in the second half. We have to get into better shape and get those young guys more acclimated to the speed of the game."
Kellogg on the line-up shuffling, using 11-man rotation:
"I was hoping we would wear them down a little bit. The point guard, did a great job, a really controlled the game and dominated the play. I was impressed with how they played everybody. I had talked to people, who said he was really good and first-hand, he was even better. I tried to shuttle enough guys to maybe wear them down and that didn't happen."
Kellogg on the UMass newcomers:
"I was pleased with their effort and their energy and attitude. I'm not sure they did enough to put us in a position to win. I'm going to try to get these guys better. We are trying to build for this year and build it for the next two, three, four years from now."
Kellogg on how to create more opportunities for Harris:
"We can get him more screens. We rely on him a lot to get open on his own and make plays and I think we will put a few sets in to get him some screens to help him get off. They (UCF) did a pretty nice job of covering him tonight and making it hard for him to catch. Right now, if you are playing us, you know he averaged 19 points per game last year and he's going to be trying to go for 20. You know, he didn't shoot the particularly well. We are going to need him to score and really do it in a better fashion than he did tonight."
Ricky Harris on the game:
"It was frustrating. They (UCF) played a good defensive game tonight. They left us open for 3s and didn't want us to get inside, they clogged the middle up. We have to do a better job on offense, taking time on offense and can't get frustrated like we did at the end and see the score go up like that."
Harris on needing more scoring help:
"Definitely, they clogged the middle up, so I couldn't go anywhere and left the corners open. We have guys on the team that can step up and score the basketball. Some of the guys were kind of nervous out there. But we have guys that are capable of scoring the basketball and I feel that as time grows, they will."
Harris on so many 3-pointers being shot:
"I think we shot 25 3s in the first half. We have to get to the free throw line. Free throws help win basketball games. Its something we have to do early, we have to get to the free throw line. We have a good 3-point shooting team, but you don't want to take that many 3-pointers in a game. We have to get the basket and get to the free throw line if we get fouled. We have shooters that can shoot the basketball, today just wasn't our day."
Freddie Riley on UCF's defense and what they did in the second half:
"They played a sagging man-to-man, which made us think it was a zone defense ... I don't think they changed anything, I think it was more that we took some bad shots and put our heads down and they took advantage of that. They were a home and had the crowd and took advantage of that. We can't put our heads down and expect things to go our way."
Riley on playing his first college game:
"It feels good to get out here and play in this game instead of scrimmaging each other. Coach Walberg and Coach Kellogg always tell us we need to work on everything and we kind of brush it off, but after this game and getting beat the way we did, we know we have to work at it."
UMass lost its season opener for the first time since 2002 against Indiana. The Minutemen had won six straight openers dating to 2003.
UMass attempted a school-record 38 3-point field goals in the game. The old record was 35 set last season against Duquesne (2/25/09). UMass also took 34 against Duquesne in the A-10 Tournament last March.
Ricky Harris scored in double-figures for the 69th time in his career with 15 points.
Harris is up to 1362 points, still 15th all-time at UMass. He is just shy of Clarence Hill (1,369) and Julius Erving (1,370).
Harris has 212 career 3-pointers made, fifth all-time at UMass.
Anthony Gurley scored in double-figures for the 27th time in his career and 18th time at UMass with 14 points.
Freddie Riley scored 12 points, making four 3-pointers in his college debut.
UCF drew 8,727, the second-largest home crowd in school history.
UMass' bench outscored UCF, 38-24.
RLANDO, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team got concrete proof in Friday night's season opener of something it probably already knew. When Ricky Harris struggles to score, the Minutemen are going to have a hard time finding enough offense.
After a hot start, Harris could not find the range against a Central Florida defense designed to stop him. His teammates could not pick up the slack and UMass lost 84-67 at Central Florida.
The Minutemen attempted a school-record 38 3-pointers, but made only 12, too few to stay in the game.
"We're a good 3-point shooting team, but we don't want to take that many threes in a game," Harris said.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg agreed.
"Thirty-eight threes in a game is a lot of threes," Kellogg said. "We have to do a better job getting to the free-throw line and getting into the gut of the defense. They did a good job of keeping us in front of them and getting their big guy in the middle of the lane."
The Minutemen (0-1) return to action in their home opener Wednesday when they take on defending Ivy League champion Cornell at 7:30 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
After a Javorn Farrell basket tied the score 43-43 early in the second half, UMass appeared to be successfully weathering Harris' shooting slump in what had been an up-and-down game to that point.
But while Harris continued to miss, the Golden Knights began finding the range. A jumper by Dave Diakite with 16 minutes, 32 seconds left started a 9-0 run that put the home team in control. A three-pointer by Harris slowed the Knights briefly, but they scored six straight to take a 58-46 lead. That was a deficit the Minutemen could not overcome.
"It was a momentum run," UMass freshman Freddie Riley said. "We took some bad shots and we put our heads down. They took advantage of that. We can't put our head down and expect things to go our way."
Kellogg elected to have junior Anthony Gurley, who started on and off last year as well as the Nov. 7 exhibition game against Dowling, came off the bench Friday night. He finished with 14 points.
Two freshmen made their collegiate debuts as starters as Terrell Vinson and Sampson Carter lined up for the opening tip alongside Harris, David Gibbs and Sean Carter.
Harris finished with 15 points, but had just four in the second half as he missed six of his seven shots after intermission. Kellogg said that UMass needed someone to step up when Harris struggled.
"But right now I don't know who that is," Kellogg said. "We need Ricky to play well every night and score the ball and do it efficiently ...
"We relied a little too much on him getting open on his own. I'll put a few sets in to get him some screens. We're going to need him to score and to do it in a better fashion than he did tonight."
Isaac Sosa led the Knights with 26 points, and A.J. Rompza added 13 points and five assists.
Riley led the Minuteman rookies in scoring with 12 points on four 3-pointers. Farrell added nine points, and five rebounds, and Vinson had a game- high seven rebounds before fouling out. "I was pleased with (the freshmen's) effort and attitude," Kellogg said. "I'm not sure if they did enough productivity wise."
Riley said the loss got the players' attention. "Coming into this game and getting beat the way we did, we know we have to work," he said.
NOTES:Raphiael Putney was the only Minuteman on scholarship not to play in the game.
NBA Legend Michael Jordan was one of the 8,727 in attendance to watch the collegiate debut of his son Marcus Jordan, a freshman guard for Central Florida.
Sitting in a second-level suite in the corner of the arena, the elder Jordan watched his son go scoreless with two rebounds in 11 minutes.

he Knights (1-0) fed off an electric crowd and collected an 84-67 win over UMass (0-1) in the season opener Friday night at UCF Arena.
Sophomore guard Isaac Sosa led the Knights with 26 points, connecting on six-of-seven shots from 3-point range. Sophomore point guard A.J. Rompza added 13 points and sophomore forward P.J. Gaynor chipped in 11.
"I'm proud of our guys that they battled hard, tried to take care of the details that we wanted them to take care of details and stayed poised," UCF Coach Kirk Speraw said.
The Knights fell behind by seven points in the first half, but the Knights rallied thanks to 59 percent field-goal shooting in the first half.
"I think we stayed positive," Rompza said. "I mean, there was times when we went down seven … As a young team we could have given up and put our heads down."
Ricky Harris led the University of Massachusetts with 15 points, while Anthony Gurley finished with 14.
The Knights finished the game shooting 55 percent from the field and 58 percent from 3-point range, while UMass shot 33 percent from the field and 32 percent from 3-point range.
The game drew an announced crowd of 8,727, the second largest turnout in school history.
"We need them out there every night," Speraw said. "… It was an awesome crowd."
One of the big draws was the prospect of seeing Michael Jordan, NBA legend and father of UCF freshman guard Marcus Jordan. The Jordan family didn't disappoint, with Michael Jordan sitting in a luxury box to watch his son's Division I debut.
Marcus Jordan struggled after picking up two early fouls. He finished with two rebounds, two assists and zero points. Jordan has missed a lot of practice while dealing with knee, ankle and wrist injuries.
"His timing and everything is just off, but he's going to be fine," Speraw said. "He's going to be a big part of what we're going to do this season."
UCF raised two banners during halftime in honor of late coach Torchy Clark, father of UCF basketball, and his son, prolific scorer Bo Clark.
The Knights' next game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at UCF Arena. The team faces Howard in the opening game of the Glenn Wilkes Classic.

our of the five freshmen made their collegiate debuts against Central Florida Friday night, but Ricky Harris’ team-leading 15 points were not enough, as the Massachusetts basketball team lost its first season-opener since 2002, 84-67.
The Minutemen attempted a school-record 38 3-pointers in the game, including 25 in the first half and 13 in the second half, and only made 12 of them. UMass could not string offensive opportunities together, going just 33 percent from the floor while the Knights shot 55 percent on the game.
“Coming in [to halftime], I didn’t realize we had taken 25 3-pointers in the first half,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said after the game. “I don’t think I had really been with a team that had taken 25 in a whole game before. So we decided at halftime to stress to take [the ball] to the hole. Early on, we did a better job (in the second half). But, I guess we took 13 more in the second half. So we took 38 3’s, that’s a lot of 3’s. I think we have to do a better job of getting to the free-throw line and getting into the defense.”
Along with Harris, who scored in double-figures for the 69th time in his career, freshman Freddie Riley came off the bench and added 12 points, including four 3-pointers in 17 minutes. Redshirt junior forward Anthony Gurley had 14 points off the bench, while freshman Terrell Vinson had a team-high seven rebounds in his first collegiate game before fouling out.
The Knights’ defense shut down the Minutemen for most of the game, including Harris, who was held to 5-of-15 shooting and 4-of-11 from 3-point range, allowing just 20 points in the paint throughout the game while creating second chances and points in transition. UCF was led by Issac Sosa, who went 9-of-11 from the floor for 26 points and point guard A.J. Rompza (13 points, five assists).
“They played traditional defense where they were trying to keep us in front and they did a good job of keeping the big guy in the middle of the lane,” Kellogg said. “I think they did a nice job defensively, even though I thought our looks were somewhat decent.”
Even with contributions from Gurley and Riley, UMass’ big men, Sean Carter (four points, five rebounds 26 minutes) and Hashim Bailey (eight minutes, zero points), could not help Harris out on the offensive against UCF. Kellogg used an 11-man rotation to try and wear down the Knights and to generate scoring chances.
“I was hoping we would wear them down a little bit,” Kellogg said. “The point guard did a great job, really controlled the game and dominated the play. I was impressed with how they played everybody.”
Along with Vinson and Riley, forward Sampson Carter got his first collegiate start, playing 16 minutes and scoring three points, while Javorn Farrell came off the bench and added nine points and five rebounds.
“I was pleased with their effort and their energy and attitude,” Kellogg said. “I’m not sure they did enough to put us in a position to win. I’m going to try to get these guys better. We are trying to build for this year and build it for the next two, three, four years from now.”
It was important for the freshmen to play in such a big game, as UCF drew nearly 9,000 people for the school’s second largest home crowd in school history. Marcus Jordan, Michael Jordan’s son, played 11 minutes in his first collegiate game, scoring no points with two rebounds. The Minutemen return to Amherst for their home opener against Cornell Wednesday night in the Legends Classic at 7 p.m.
