TLANTIC CITY, N.J.- After clear signs of improvement against two weak opponents, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg was ready to test his team against a tougher opponent as the Minutemen headed to Atlantic City, N.J.
UMass (2-2) will play Rutgers (2-1) in the semifinals of the Legends Classic at 5:30 tonight at Boardwalk Hall.
"This is good test to see where we are against a Big East team," Kellogg said. "Any time you play a school of that level it's an instant test to see how far we've come in a only a few weeks.
"You want to see if the good things that have been happening can happen against the highest level of competition," he added.
At 8 p.m. Saturday, the winner will face the victor in tonight's second semifinal between Michigan State and Florida. The losers of the two semifinals will square off at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. All four games in Atlantic City will be broadcast on HDNet.
The Scarlet Knights present some significant matchup problems for the Minutemen.
Rutgers boasts a pair of talented big men inside. Gregory Echenique, a 6-foot-9, 265-pound forward from Venezuela is averaging 12.7 points and 9.7 rebounds. He is joined by Hamady Ndiaye, an athletic 6-foot-11, 235-pound shot-blocking center from Senegal who is averaging 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds. But his 5.3 blocked shots per game will make him a factor.
Kellogg expects that Hashim "Big City" Bailey, who missed the last two games with a groin injury, will be back in action. Kellogg is counting on the 6-foot-10, 275-pound resident of Paterson, N.J., to help counteract Rutgers' size.
"Echenique is a real big wide-body who can score and work for position down low," Kellogg said. "It would help to have City back because the size is something you can't overcome with a guy like Echenique. If you can at least match his size, sometimes that's beneficial."
Rutgers' leading scorer Mike Rosario, a 6-foot-3 guard who is averaging 17.3 points per game, will present a whole different set of problems on the perimeter.
"He's a very good player, who'll probably be first-team all-Big East somewhere down the road," Kellogg said. "He has good size and can really score the ball."
The Scarlet Knights beat Marist, 74-67, to open the season and edged Drexel 58-56 on Nov. 20. Vermont surprised Rutgers 77-71 on Sunday. While UMass is familiar with Boardwalk Hall because the Atlantic 10 Tournament has been held there since 2007, this will be the Minutemen's first time playing two consecutive games in the building. UMass has been eliminated in their first game of the tournament each time in Atlantic City.
POTENTIAL SATURDAY OPPONENTS - The second game tonight will draw the most national attention as powers Michigan State and Florida face off.
No school has had more Final Four appearances since 1999 than Michigan State's five and the No. 2-ranked Spartans are a favorite to add to that list.
They arrive at the Jersey shore at 4-0 with wins over Florida Gulf Coast, Toledo, Valparaiso and Gonzaga.
Junior point guard Kalin Lucas, the 2009 Big Ten player of the year, leads Michigan State with 16.8 points and 3.8 assists per game. He needs five points to reach 1,000 for his career.
Senior forward Raymar Morgan is a candidate for the Wooden Award given to the national player of the year, but has been hampered by an ankle injury and is averaging 8.3 points and four rebounds this season.
Spartans coach Tom Izzo needs one win to become the school's all time leader in victories. He is tied with legend Jud Heathcote at 340.
Florida is also 4-0, having defeated Stetson, Georgia Southern, Troy and Florida State. The Gators have relied on defense, allowing just 51.2 points per game. Under coach Billy Donovan, Florida is 59-7 in November.
Freshman guard Kenny Boynton leads Florida with 17.5 points per game, while Chandler Parsons averages 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Vernon Macklin, a 6-foot-10 center who transferred from Georgetown, has averaged 10 points and seven rebounds in his first four games as a Gator.
UMass is are 2-1 against Florida, most recently upsetting the then two-time defending national champions 78-66 in the 2008 NIT Semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

ith several old faces departing and six new ones arriving it was easy to look past Mike Coburn.
Yet the junior guard earned the start at point guard in the Rutgers mens basketball teams first three games.
I feel pretty comfortable, said Coburn who is averaging 8.3 points per game. Im just trying to go out there and do what [head coach Fred Hill Jr.] is asking of me, whether its scoring or making plays, but Im trying to be a leader out there.
Coburn and fellow junior James Beatty, a junior college transfer, were locked in a battle for the starting point guard job over the summer. And after watching the first three games, Coburn appears to be the favorite to earn the job outright.
Its a little extra motivation, Coburn said of having another point guard. But at the same time we needed people in here to help us out and [Beattys] a good edition to our team. Hes going to help us out and do a lot of good things, but I know in myself that I can play and all I want to do is go out there and just play.
Coburn has accounted for 13 of the Scarlet Knights 37 assists while playing 26 minutes per game compared to Beattys six and 14, respectively.
But Hill is still not ready to entrench Coburn as the starter just yet, having said Tuesday at practice that he is looking to more evenly distribute the minutes between the two.
Its probably a little bit of my fault because [Beatty] should have got more minutes because there are things he does differently than Mike, Hill said. Certainly Mike scored very well and did a lot of good things but it should be more balanced and I have to do a better job and I told that to [Beatty] of getting him on the floor because he brings a lot of different things. Theyre two different types of point guards and I think thats great for us.
This weekend should be a good test not only for both point guards, but a measuring stick for where this team is at.
The Scarlet Knights face Massachusetts tomorrow night (5:30 p.m. tip) at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in the first of two Legends Classic semifinals. The other semifinal features Florida against No. 2 Michigan State.
Its a good measuring test for us, Hill said. Michigan State is the No. 2 team in the country and Florida is a perennial top-25 team so it is kind of nice. Its a little different because we are playing a different style and it will be interesting to see if we can get out and run on these teams. Weve done it relatively well in the first three games weve played but can we get out and do it against a higher level of competition.
UMass (2-2) is led by senior guard Ricky Harris who is averaging 17.3 points per game, but the Minutemen get scoring from multiple players. They have four players averaging in double figures through their first four games.
Against St. Francis (N.Y.) in its last matchup 43 of UMass 83 points were scored by freshmen led by Samson Carter and Terrell Vinsons 13 apiece.
Rutgers (2-1) is coming off a disappointing 77-71 loss at home to Vermont a loss that has some people questioning if this team is any different from years past.
We have to be ready to bounce back, Coburn said. We have another test [tomorrow] and Im looking forward to seeing the team bounce back and Im pretty sure we will. I think we are a resilient team overall and we emphasize next play, but the case now is next game and [the loss to Vermont] is past us.
Win or lose the Scarlet Knights get a second game in Atlantic City Saturday against either the Gators (4-0) or Spartans (4-0).
If it is a meeting with Florida expect some mixed feelings for forward Jonathan Mitchell.
The junior spent two seasons at Florida before transferring to Rutgers. And while Mitchell owns a national championship ring from his time in Gainesville, he said he keeps it locked up in a case in his room. Right now hes focused on helping the Scarlet Knights win basketball games.
The national championship was something special because its not something that too many people get a chance to take part in, Mitchell said. Its something that nobody can take away from me, but that was three years ago and Ill definitely have that in my back pocket, but now its time to move forward and try to make some history here.
But beating Florida would sure be nice.
Ive been thinking about it a little bit, Mitchell admitted. Right now were just focused on UMass, but if the chips fall that we play Florida Ill definitely be excited. Its something Ive been dreaming about and something my families been dreaming about. I want to show [Florida head coach Billy Donovan] what he missed out on.
TLANTIC CITY, N.J. - After being down by as many as 19 points early in the second half, UMass rallied back to within four points in the final minutes, but wasn't able to overcome the Rutgers, falling 83-75 on Friday night in the first semifinal of the Legends Classic. The Minutemen (2-3 overall) were led by Ricky Harris (22 points - 20 in the second half) and Anthony Gurley (19 points). Rutgers sophomore guard Rosario scored the game's first 10 points and finished with 22 for Rutgers (3-1). The Scarlet Knights' 18-1 run midway through the first half proved to be the difference despite UMass' valiant second-half rally.
UMass will take on No. 2 Michigan State tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. The game will be televised on HDNet (DirecTV Channel 79, Dish Network Channel 362). UMass will be playing the No. 2 team in the nation for the first time since falling to No. 2 Saint Joseph's, 93-58 on Feb. 25, 2004.
Harris moved to 10th in career scoring at UMass with 22 in the game and now has 1,438 as he passed Horace Neysmith (1,428). Gurley had double-figures for the fifth time in as many games this season. Sophomore David Gibbs scored 11, to tie his career-high, set last season.
The Minutemen, who were down by as many 19 early in the second half, cut the deficit to single-digits for the first time in about 20 minutes at 75-68 on a David Gibbs 3-point field goal with 4:41 left in the second half.
UMass continued to inch closer as Harris stole the ball and laid it in with 3:31 left to make it 77-72. Mike Coburn's jumper with 2:38 left regained a 7-point lead for Rutgers at 79-72. Harris then canned a 3-pointer with 1:31 left in regulation for a 4-point margin (79-75).
Rutgers' Mike Coburn (13 points) made three free throws and James Beatty made one with 6.3 second left for the final.
Rutgers got off to a quick start as Rosario scored the Scarlet Knights' first 10 points of the game as RU took a 10-6 lead 4:16 into the action.
UMass rallied back with eight of the next 10 points as Riley canned a pair of 3-pointers and Gurley finished a steal with a lay-up and the Minutemen jumped in front for the first time, 14-12 with 14:21 left in the first half. After falling behind for the first time, Rutgers went on an 18-1 run as five different players scored as the Scarlet Knights took a 30-15 lead with eight minutes left in the first half.
Rosario continued to drop daggers on UMass as Rutgers' lead ballooned to 16 points at 40-24 with 4:30 left in the first half as he had 18 in the first half, all in the first 15 minutes of the game.
The Minutemen battled back to cut the halftime deficit to just 11, 46-35. A Gurley free throw made it a single-digit lead (44-35), but Jonathan Mitchell made a pair of throws just before the half.
It was more of Rosario in the second half as led by as many as 19 (60-41), four minutes into the half. The Minutemen took the time to experiment with Harris playing some point guard. Gurley continued to score and Harris joined him as he moved to 10th in career scoring in the middle of the second half with a 3-pointer.
UMass had beaten Rutgers 10 times in a row with the previous nine coming while they were rivals in the A-10 in the early 1990s.
Anthony Gurley reached double-figures again off the bench with 19. He now has reached 10 or more in every game this season and in 31 of his career games. Gurley started this streak with a UMass-career-high 22 points in the 2009 A-10 Tournament, last March vs. Duquesne.
Ricky Harris moved to 10th in career scoring with 22. He now has 1438 as he passed Horace Neysmith (1,428).
Harris scored 20 or more points for the 30th time in his career. He had double-figures for the 67th time in his career and 64th time in his last 69 games.
David Gibbs tied his career high with 11 points. He set the mark last December against Hofstra.
Derek Kellogg on the late run:
"We gave them a run down the stretch. We made a couple of stabs and got it close, but it wasn't enough."
Kellogg on playing in Atlantic City:
"Maybe we can change our luck down here when we come back for the A-10 tournament in March. I have a team with freshmen and sometimes they don't play like freshmen and other times they do. I am still trying to get a feel for this team, but it is very early.''
Kellogg on Ricky Harris:
"We need Ricky to play the game we know he can play all the time. He's a senior and he needs to play like that. I need Ricky to play the way he played in the second half for this team to win. I'm not blaming him for the loss, but we need him to play the way he did in the second half. He was just out of his game in the first half.''
Ricky Harris on his play:
"I was a little too aggressive at the start. I got two quick fouls and I backed off and I wound up letting the rest of the team down. If I had played the first half the way I played the second half, the game would've ended differently."
Rutgers Coach Fred Hill:
"I thought it was a good bounce-back win for us. But we did the same thing tonight that we did the other day. We lost our composure for about a five- or six-minute stretch and it went from 19 (point lead) to (four). But I think we were able to regain our composure and make big plays down the stretch to win the game."
Rutgers guard Mike Rosario:
"I actually was in the zone. Before every game I tell myself that I've got to be the first one out there and last one to leave the locker room (prior to the game). I made a lot of good plays for my teammates, took my time and when I had the open shot, I stuck it. I was in the zone and I just knew that it was going to be a big game for us and that I had to come up big for my teammates."
Rutgers center Hamady Ndiaye:
"We need every game. After whatever happened Sunday, we had to bounce back and show what we really are about. What we've been training for this entire time."
TLANTIC CITY, N.J. - For a few moments, it looked like the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team might pull off a stunner Friday night.
The Minutemen had cut Rutgers' 19-point lead to four with 1 minute, 32 seconds remaining, but could not complete the comeback. The Minutemen fell to the Scarlet Knights 83-75 in the semifinals of the Legends Classic at Boardwalk Hall.
"We battled coming down the stretch," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "We made a few stops and put some pressure on them."
Unable to get leading scorer Ricky Harris shots against a Rutgers defense designed to deny him the ball, Kellogg moved Harris to point guard for much of the second half. The move sparked the Minutemen and seemed to confuse Rutgers as UMass chipped away at the lead.
"Moving him to the point helped us quite a bit," Kellogg said.
A 3-pointer by Harris and a layup by Sampson Carter brought UMass within 10 for the first time since the first half at 73-63 with 8:05 left.
A dunk by Hamady Ndiaye (14 points, three blocks) got the lead back to 12, but Harris made a driving layup and after a miss by James Beatty, Harris drove again to draw defenders. This time he kicked the ball to David Gibbs in the corner, who made the open 3-pointer to cut the margin to 75-68.
Harris missed two free throws, but atoned for it with a steal and a lay-in moments later that made the score 77-72 with 3:30 left.
UMass had a chance to cut the lead to two after Jonathan Mitchell (10 points, seven rebounds) missed a layup, but Harris missed a 3-point try. Sean Carter (10 rebounds) got the offensive board, but tripped over Sampson Carter who had fallen and was called for traveling.
Mike Coburn made a jump shot at the other end with 2:42 remaining that stretched the Scarlet Knights' advantage back to 79-72 with 2:41 left.
After the teams traded empty possessions, Harris hit a 3-pointer with 1:32 left, but Rutgers made enough free throws to hold on.
"We look at it as a disappointing game because we think we could have won this game," Harris said. "I feel like if we come out and continue to get better, we can win those type of games."
UMass (2-3) will face No. 2 Michigan State (4-1) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the third-place game, while Rutgers (3-1) will play Florida (5-0) at 8 p.m. for the Legends Classic title. The Gators upset the Spartans 77-74 in the second semifinal Friday night.
Harris scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half.
Anthony Gurley finished with 19 points and six rebounds for the Minutemen, and David Gibbs added 11 points and five rebounds.
"The way Ricky played in the second half is the way he needs to play all game," Kellogg said.
Mike Rosario had not even played a college game when Kellogg predicted the then-Rutgers freshman was going to be a good player after the Minutemen and Scarlet Knights had a closed scrimmage last year
Kellogg found out just how right he was in the first half as Rosario scored the first 10 points for Rutgers and had 18 of his 22 in the first half. The Scarlet Knights led 46-35 at intermission.
Rutgers appeared ready to blow the Minutemen out early in the second as it stretched its lead to 60-41 on the shoulders of Gregory Echenique. The Rutgers wide-body, who was scoreless in the first half scored 10 of the Knights' first 14 points after the break.
But the foul trouble that limited him to nine first-half minutes held him to eight in the second half before he fouled out.

TLANTIC CITY, N.J.- University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg had been considering trying Ricky Harris at point guard for a while after David Gibbs and Gary Correia had been inconsistent all season.
With his Minutemen trailing by 19 in the second half and Rutgers denying Harris the ball, Kellogg didn't have much to lose Friday night in the semifinals of the Legends Classic.
While the move did not produce a win, it sparked UMass which cut the lead to four late before the Scarlet Knights won 83-75. And it worked well enough to warrant further use down the road.
"I thought the way our offense was stalled it was a good opportunity to give it a shot and see how it worked," Kellogg said. "They were doing a nice job of not letting (Harris) get the ball. You can't not let him get it, if he already has it.
"... By putting the ball in his hands some, it will make it easier because now they're going to key on him and he can get other guys open shots," Kellogg added.
The move helped both Harris and Gibbs, who played better when he was no longer burdened by the pressure of controlling the offense. Gibbs scored 11 points, matching his career high, which was more than twice the total points (five) he had in the first four games combined.
Gibbs was strong defensively, too, locking up Mike Rosario, who had 18 points in the first half and just four in the second.
"I thought David Gibbs looked a lot more comfortable. Now David can get a little pressure off him and catch the ball and go with it," Kellogg said. Harris had 22 points, two assists and five turnovers, but got better at handling the ball the longer he played the position.
"I'm confident playing the point. I know I can play it," Harris said. "Coach is confident in me. When I do this it makes it easier for the other guys cause I can make plays for them and get them open shots."
In Friday's second semifinal. Florida upset No. 2 Michigan State 77-74. The Minutemen (2-3) will play the Spartans (4-1) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the third-place game.
It will be tougher for the Minutemen to use Harris to handle the ball against Michigan State which boasts Kalin Lucas, the 2008-09 Big Ten player of the year at point guard.
He figures to be better at guarding Harris than anyone Rutgers had.
BAILEY BACK - UMass junior big man Hashim "Big City" Bailey returned to action after missing the last two games with a groin injury. He finished with one point, two rebounds and four fouls in 14 minutes. But Bailey helped negate Gregory Echenique's size advantage inside in the first half.
UMASS IN ATLANTIC CITY - The Minutemen dropped their fourth straight game in Atlantic City, with the other three coming in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
HARRIS MILESTONES - With 22 points, Harris now was 1,438 in his career which moves him into UMass all-time top 10 scoring list. He passed Horace Neysmith (1,428). Next up is Mike Pyatt who scored 1,503 between 1974-78.
MISCELLANEOUS - Former Minuteman point guard Chris Lowe was in attendance. Lowe was cut by the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League earlier this month. Two Rutgers players, Jonathan Mitchell and Mike Coburn, were his teammates at Mount Vernon (N.Y.) High School.

TLANTIC CITY There is no such thing as easy in the world of college basketball.
The Rutgers mens basketball team learned that over the past three seasons.
Up as many as 19 in the second half, the Scarlet Knights looked in complete control until a spirited Massachusetts comeback turned Friday nights Legends classic semifinal into a dogfight.
Yet unlike in the past, Rutgers made enough plays down the stretch to earn an 83-75 victory at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
It got a little difficult, said junior guard Mike Coburn who converted three-of-four free throws inside the final minute to ice the game away. Basketball is a game of runs so we knew they were going to make a run. We had a great run in the beginning and they made their run and we had to fight and pull through, and thats what we did.
It was two different shows for the Scarlet Knights each with its own star. Mike Rosario tied a season-high with 22 points (18 in the first half) while Coburn and Hamady NDiaye co-starred in a second half where Rosario only scored four points.
I had to be mindful of the fouls while still being aggressive, said NDiaye, who finished with a season-high 14 points of his own. The last game, I wasnt aggressive as I usually am, and thats what I played for this entire game. I wanted the whole team to be aggressive and I had to show an example.
NDiaye was particularly impressive, especially after being forced to play the final 7:32 with four fouls after sophomore forward Gregory Echenique fouled out. The senior center added four rebounds and three blocks two came in that final seven-and-a-half-minute stretch.
While NDiaye was back to being aggressive, Coburn was hitting big shots with Rosario tightly marked throughout the second half.
Coburns jumper with 2:38 to play gave Rutgers a 79-72 lead and his three free throws with less than a minute to play made sure UMass did not stage an epic rally.
We were trying to run some offense and take some time off the clock, said Coburn, who finished with 13 points. In a late clock situation were just trying to make a play, and the ball happened to be in my hands and I was able to make a play.
UMass (2-3) crawled back into the game behind guard Ricky Harris. The senior was held to just two points in the first half, but his 20 second-half points keyed the Minutemens comeback.
His trey with 1:31 remaining brought UMass to within four at 79-75, but it got no closer. Harris 22 points led the Minutemen. Anthony Gulry finished with 19 and David Gibbs added 11 for UMass.
We did the same thing tonight that we did the other day, we lost our composure a little bit for a five minute stretch and [the lead] went from 19 to four, said Rutgers head coach Fred Hill Jr. UMass made the game hectic in the second half and we went away from what we did to get the lead. When we learn how to be more disciplined we are going to be a pretty good club.
Not to be lost in the shuffle of the late drama was Rosarios 18-point first half, worthy of its own Atlantic City show. The sophomore scored the Scarlet Knights first 10 points as they built a lead as large as 40-24 until Rosario left with foul trouble with 4:02 remaining in the period.
I look at it this way when I bring a lot of passion and energy it feeds off to my teammates, it feeds off to the coaching staff and to coach Hill, Rosario said. By me coming out today and getting us going with a lot of energy, it fed off to the big guys as well. There was a lot of passion to win the game between the guys and the coaching staff and I thought the five-minute stretch that I had set the tone.
Rosario and Echenique combined for Rutgers first 16 points of the second half. Echenique finished with 10 points all in the second half as he reached double figures for the third time this year.
Five players finished in double-figures for Rutgers (3-1) for the first time since a 2007 upset victory at Pittsburgh. Junior forward Jonathan Mitchell scored 10 points.
I actually was in the zone, Rosario said. Today I showed a lot of passion and I did a lot of good plays for my teammates. I took my time and when I had the open shot I stuck it. I just knew that this was going to be a big game for us and I knew that I had to come up big for my teammates.
A victory against a 2-3 UMass team isnt the most glamorous, but for Rutgers (3-1), after a disappointing loss to Vermont, it was one they desperately couldnt afford to lose.
We need every game, NDiaye said. We had to bounce back and show what we really are about. We went hard this entire week and we had to reward ourselves with something today.
The Scarlet Knights face Florida in the Legends Classic final after it defeated No. 2 Michigan State 77-74 in the second semifinal at Boardwalk Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
TLANTIC CITY - Atlantic City, meet Mike Rosario.
The Rutgers sophomore guard wasted no time introducing himself to hometown fans in the first game of the inaugural Legends Classic at Boardwalk Hall on Friday.
"I was in the zone," Rosario said.
Rosario scored his team's first 10 points of the game and led five Scarlet Knights in double figures with 22 points as Rutgers beat Massachusetts 83-75 before an announced crowd of 5,154.
"Mike Rosario in the first half was just awesome," Rutgers coach Fred Hill said.
The only other time Rosario had played in Atlantic City was down the street at Atlantic City High School, when he played for St. Anthony (Hudson County) in the 2006 Battle by the Bay showcase tournament.
"I'm just happy to be in Atlantic City and to have the experience and to be able to go out there and put on a show, and I think that's what I did tonight," Rosario said.
Rutgers will face Florida today at 8 p.m. The Gators edged No. 2 Michigan State 77-74 in the nightcap.
Rosario opened the scoring 19 seconds into the game with a short jumper and answered an ensuing UMass basket with a put-back layup.
He followed that up with back-to-back 3-pointers - one fading away from the basket and one coming off a screen at the top of the key - to give the Rutgers fans in attendance something to cheer for early.
"You wondered if he was ever going to miss," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "He scored the first 10 points of the game for them - that's ridiculous.
"(Rosario) put them on his back in the first half, and that was the difference in the game."
Rosario also grabbed a rebound and took a charge during the spurt, which all happened in the first five minutes of the game.
"I look at it this way," Rosario said. "When I bring a lot of energy to the team and a lot of passion, it feeds off to my teammates and it feeds off to the coaching staff. I just thought that by me coming out today early and getting us going, I think that fed off a lot of energy and a lot of aggressiveness to my teammates. I thought the five-minute stretch that I had set the tone."
UMass (2-3) took the lead one minute later on a layup by Anthony Gurley.
But Rosario assisted James Beatty on a 3-pointer on Rutgers' next possession and the Scarlet Knights (3-1) never trailed again, leading by as many as 19 points at one point in the second half.
UMass cut the lead to four points with 1 minute, 32 seconds left, but three free throws by Rutgers' Mike Coburn down the stretch put the game away.
Rosario finished with a team-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. He was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.
Hamady Ndiaye scored 14 points, Coburn had 13 and Gregory Echenique and Jonathan Mitchell each chipped in with 10 for the Scarlet Knights.
Ricky Harris led UMass with 22 points. Gurley added 19 points and six rebounds.
Rutgers plays in the Big East, yet Hill didn't hesitate at the chance to bring his team on a rare trip to the southern half of the state to play some of the country's top teams.
"I think it's great for the fans, and it's great to be here in Atlantic City showcasing the program in South Jersey," Hill said. "I'm out of my mind, that's what some people say. I just really believe that we're building something special right now.
"In order to get to where we want to go, you've got to challenge yourself, and that's what we're all about. We're going to suffer some losses along the way, and maybe some bad ones because of the way the schedule falls, but you've got to build. It's the toughest league in the country, and it takes some time, but we want to challenge ourselves."
Notes: The Atlantic City High School marching band performed at halftime of each of the night's two games. ... UMass' Ricky Harris scored 22 points to move into 10th place on the school's career scoring list with 1,438, passing Horace Neysmith. ... Rutgers used to play in the Atlantic 10 conference with UMass. Rutgers leads the all-time series between the schools 28-20.
