TLANTIC CITY, N.J. - UMass played a No. 2-ranked team for the fourth time in school history and the Minutemen took it hard as second-ranked Michigan State picked up a 106-68 victory in the Legends Classic Semifinal at Boardwalk Hall. The Spartans, who play a rematch of the 2009 NCAA Championship game with North Carolina on Tuesday night, used a 30-3 run in the first half to put the game out of hand.
Guards Anthony Gurley (24) and Ricky Harris (15) led UMass, which fell to 2-4 overall. For Gurley it tied a career-high. The Spartans (5-1) had five players score in double-figures: Chris Allen (18), Raymar Morgan (17), Kalin Lucas (16), Korie Lucious (13) and Delvon Roe (11).
It was the first time UMass allowed 100 points to an opponent since the epic 107-100 win at Syracuse in 2007, two years ago to the day. The last time the Minutemen gave up 100 in a loss was back on Dec. 10, 1996 in a 102-81 loss to Fresno State. Michigan State's point total was the most since Penn State scored 107 in 1989. It equals the 11th most points allowed by UMass all-time.
UMass tried to change things up with a starting line-up adjustment as Gurley and Hashim Bailey started for the first time this season and Harris started at point guard for the first time in his career. It worked early on as the Minutemen took an 8-2 lead out of the gates in the first 2:30 as Gurley made two lay-ups and Harris canned an NBA-length 3-pointer. The Spartans answered with a 16-0 run to take an 18-8 lead with 14 minutes left in the first half. Lucas and Allen each hit two 3-pointers in the burst.
Michigan State expanded the lead to 18 at 29-11 on a bank-shot 3-pointer by Lucious and a Morgan trey with 8:16 left in the first half. That continued to balloon the Spartans' 27-3 run. Michigan State scored three more points on a layup-and free throw for a 30-3 run and a 32-11 lead.
UMass stopped the bleeding with a 9-0 run of its own on capped by a Harris 3-pointer with 6:23 left in the first half. The Minutemen cut the margin to 11 on two different occasions, but could get no closer.
The rest of first half was a track meet up and down the court as the Minutemen trailed 55-38 at intermission. Gurley had 18 at halftime and Harris had 13. Michigan State shot 57 from the floor and 53 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.
Michigan State poured it on in the second half as they took a lead of 35 on a steal and dunk by Draymond Green followed by consecutive Allen 3-pointers with 12:30 left. That gave Michigan State an 80-45 lead.
The Spartans took a 39-point lead on a lay-up by Lucas with 7:36 left, for a 93-54 advantage. Tom Herzog's lay-up wit 3:46 left made the lead 41 points and put Michigan State over the 100-point plateau at 101-60.
UMass returns to action on Wednesday as the Minutemen host Quinnipiac at 7 p.m., at the Mullins Center. Michigan State heads to North Carolina for a rematch of the 2009 NCAA Championship game in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Anthony Gurley tied a career-high 24 points in the game. He had 18 in the first half alone. He has scored 22, 19 and 24 (22 point average) in his three career games at Boardwalk Hall.
Gurley scored in double-figures for the 32nd time in his career and sixth time this season in as many games.
Gurley had more than 20 points for the second time this season and fifth time in his career.
Ricky Harris scored in double-figures for the 70th time in his career and 67th time in the last 72 games with 15.
Harris made his first-career start at point guard for UMass. Gurley started for the first time this season and Hashim Bailey drew his first-career start at center.
Harris had his first drew charge of the season, early in the game.
It was the first time UMass allowed 100 points to an opponent since the epic 107-100 win at Syracuse in 2007, two years ago to the day. The last time the Minutemen gave up 100 in a loss was back on Dec. 10, 1996 in a 102-81 loss to Fresno State. Michigan State's point total was the most since Penn State had 107 against the Minutemen on Jan. 5, 1989 (107-79).
UMass is now 0-4 all-time against teams ranked No. 2 losing to Wake Forest and Kentucky in 1996 and Saint Joseph's in 2004.
UMass is also 0-2 against Michigan State, falling to the Spartans in 1985 in New Mexico.
om Izzo became the winningest coach in the history of MSU men�s basketball Saturday as the Spartans routed Massachusetts 106-68 in the third place game of the Legends Classic at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
Izzo surpassed his predecessor, Jud Heathcote, who notched 340 wins during his tenure in East Lansing.
The team�s biggest problem in its loss to Florida, turnovers, was corrected in time to face the Minutemen, as MSU turned the ball over 11 times, 12 fewer than Friday. The Spartans added 27 assists on 41 baskets against UMass.
The Spartans� offense was on fire, as MSU shot 58.6 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.
After failing to record a point Friday, senior forward Raymar Morgan responded in a big way, scoring 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Junior guard Chris Allen added a team-high 18 points in 22 minutes off the bench for the No. 2 Spartans (5-1 overall).
Sophomore forward Draymond Green had a well-rounded game, scoring six points with seven rebounds and six assists in 19 minutes.
The Spartans found themselves down 8-2 early, but that would be UMass�s largest lead of the game. Less than two minutes later, the Spartans would go ahead 10-8 and never look back.
MSU went into halftime up 55-38 and really poured it on in the second half, eventually amassing a 46-point lead on a 3-pointer by senior guard Isaiah Dahlman with 2:14 to play.
While MSU was shooting the lights out, the Spartans� defense held UMass to 38.2 percent shooting.
Junior guard Kalin Lucas (16 points), sophomore guard Korie Lucious (13 points) and sophomore forward Delvon Roe (11 points) also scored in double figures for MSU.
Guard Anthony Gurley led the Minutemen with 24 points.
TLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Michigan State wanted to vent its frustrations after losing to Florida Friday night and there was nothing the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team could do to stop it on Saturday.
The young Minutemen were badly overmatched against the No. 2-ranked team in the country and got crushed 106-68 in the consolation game of the Legends Classic at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
The Spartans "played like a Final Four team tonight," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "They were in a different gear than we were. Faster, quicker, more physical. They made shots and pretty much did what they wanted on the floor.
"That's a program that I aspire to have our team look like at some point," he added.
UMass briefly gave its fans something to be excited about. After Durrell Summers hit two free throws for Michigan State eight seconds into the game, the Minutemen scored the next eight points to take an 8-2 edge.
The Spartans (5-1) extinguished that excitement in a hurry as they scored the next 16 points, including two 3-pointers each by Kalin Lucas and Chris Allen.
Two free throws by Sampson Carter and one by Anthony Gurley briefly slowed the Michigan State momentum, but the Spartans ran off another 13 straight points to increase their lead to 32-11 with 7:43 left in the first half.
That eliminated any suspense about the winner, and the only real questions were how many points Michigan State would score and how historic the beating would be for UMass.
The lead reached 30 points 5:20 into the second half and climbed to 40 with just under four minutes left. The 106 points tied the 11th most ever given up by a UMass team, and it was the most the Minutemen have allowed since 1989.
"They wore us down and back-to-back games, with the team I have right now, is probably not a good thing, especially against a hungry Michigan State team that lost to Florida (Friday) night," Kellogg said.
The Minutemen (2-4) return home to host Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mullins Center.
With less than 24 hours to prepare for the No. 2 team in the country, Kellogg tried a bigger lineup and a zone defense to counteract Michigan State's size, but it was ineffective.
"They were fantastic against a zone we put in in shoot-around today," Kellogg said. "I thought if we could rebound the ball and play a couple bigs at once, we could handle their physicality.
"I thought we did it for eight minutes, but our big guys weren't used to playing that many minutes and going against guys that big and physical," he added.
The second showing of the Ricky Harris at point guard experiment was not effective either. Against Lucas, Harris (15 points, two steals) had six turnovers, including five in the first half. UMass had 16 turnovers in the game.
Lost in the loss was another strong scoring game by junior guard Anthony Gurley, whose 24 points tied his career high recorded against Georgia Tech as a freshman at Wake Forest. Gurley is averaging 18.2 points per game through the first six games.
Allen led the Spartans with 18, while Raymar Morgan added 17.
"Obviously the outcome is not acceptable, losing by that many points," Kellogg said. "But I also don't want our guys to feel like there's not a lot of season left. It has to be disappointing for how the game ended up, but hopefully an eye-opener for how you're supposed to be."
Harris said the game was just that.
"That was a good ball team," he said. "They might be an Elite Eight or Final Four team. It was a good test and showed us where we were physically. "All we can do is come back, practice and hopefully get better," Harris added. "We have the potential to be good, but we're not there yet."
