UMass Athletics - recap / notes / quotes
niversity of Massachusetts freshman guard Freddie Riley had minor outpatient surgery Wednesday and certainly will miss Friday's game against Grambling State and likely other games as well.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said the procedure did not the result from a new injury. He said Riley's knee has been bothering him "for a while" and needed to be addressed. The policy at UMass is not to reveal the specific nature of an injury.
Riley could be out anywhere from one to four weeks.
"He'll definitely be out Friday," Kellogg said.
Riley, a 6-foot-5 guard from Florida, is the third leading scorer for the Minutemen (4-5) through the first nine games of the season, averaging 9.6 points in 16.2 minutes.
Riley has attempted 84 field goals, including 63 from behind the 3-point line. He is shooting 34.9 percent from behind the arc.
If Riley heals quickly, he may not miss many games. After Friday, UMass has eight days off for finals before playing Memphis in Boston on Dec. 19. The Minutemen are at Boston College on Dec. 23, and then get another week off before playing at Davidson on Dec. 30.
Kellogg said no one player would pick up all of Riley's minutes.
"It'll be across the board," Kellogg said.
David Gibbs, Sampson Carter and Javorn Farrell are the players most likely to see their minutes increased.

he schedule over winter break could be pretty frustrating for the Massachusetts mens basketball team based on its schedule and how its done against other quality opponents.
However, UMass coach Derek Kellogg believes that tonights game against Grambling State could be a good test to see if playing a competitive schedule has done anything to the Minutemens confidence. At the very least, he knows that matchups against top-40 teams are what will make fans more interested in watching his team.
When you talk about schedules and tough scheduling, I think that will translate into people wanting to come watch a team thats playing pretty much everyone, Kellogg said.
The most recent quality opponent to play UMass (4-5) was Seton Hall on Dec. 7. After being down 44-19 at the half, the Minutemen turned around in the second half with 49 points.
However, the effort was not enough to overcome a combined 43 points by Herb Pope and Jeremy Hazell in an 86-68 loss to the Pirates. Seton Hall was one of four non-conference teams in the top 40 to play UMass this year.
Most of the top-tier opponents that played or are scheduled to play the Minutemen do so at neutral sites or on their home turf. But when it comes to non-conference opponents coming to the Mullins Center, Cornell was the only team to even receive a vote in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
The Tigers (1-4) will be a similar opponent to what UMass is now accustomed to on its home court.
GSUs only win game against Paul Quinn College in a 75-61 victory. Since then, it has failed to pull any closer than 10 points to its last three opponents.
The meeting between the two teams will be the first ever and the first time a team from Louisiana played in Amherst since 1992.
The Tigers recent struggles should give Minutemens younger players plenty of opportunities to showcase their talent considering how little attention they received during practice on Thursday.
We havent really started talking about [Grambling St.] much, so I really dont know too much about them, guard Ricky Harris said.
The Tigers have struggled offensively, averaging 58.8 points per game while giving up 74.8. Their leading scorer is point guard Ariece Perkins (13.2 points per game), who is one of three players to average in double-figures.
Kellogg hopes to see an improvement with his teams effort during games and in practice now that the non-conference schedule is coming to a close. One of his biggest challenges has been getting the newer players to understand how hard they have to play at the Division I level.
When you tell them to sprint, I dont even know if they know what a sprint is at this level, so Im going back to the minute details of this is how we do things, and theyve responded pretty well, Kellogg said.
Some of the reserves who dont have many minutes will get their opportunities tonight with Harris, Freddie Riley and Javorn Farrell out with various injuries. Since all three players are guards, junior Gary Correia will likely play much of the game at point guard.
Following the meeting with GSU, UMass will have a week of rest before it plays Kelloggs former team, Memphis, at the TD Garden in Boston on Dec. 19.

fter playing three games in one week, the Massachusetts mens basketball team is feeling the effects of back-to-back games on the road, including four of its past five away from the Mullins Center.
Freshman guard Freddie Riley will not play against Grambling State on Friday because of minor knee surgery Wednesday that will keep him out 2-4 weeks. He is averaging 9.6 points in 16.2 minutes for the Minutemen, and is the third leading scorer for UMass behind senior guard Ricky Harris and redshirt junior Anthony Gurley.
Along with Riley, Harris is suffering from an injury, when he rolled his ankle during Thursdays practice after stepping on a teammates ankle during a drill.
I dont know exactly what his status is, but Im sure he will play, but I dont know what percentage he will be at, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said.
Harris was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week, and is third in the conference averaging 17.7 points per game. He had 19 points, six assists and three rebounds in both victories over Quinnipiac and Holy Cross.
With Riley out and Harris not at 100 percent, sophomore guard David Gibbs and junior guard Gary Correia will likely see more minutes against the Tigers.
Gibbs started the first five games at point guard and last three on the wing, as Harris has been bringing the ball up for the Minutemen, while Correia is providing a spark off the bench for UMass.
Javorn Farrell pulled his groin in Wednesdays practice, but will most likely play against Grambling St., but according to Kellogg, he still isnt completely healed. Farrell played in all nine games off the bench, averaging four points and 2.7 rebounds per game in 11.1 minutes, and has been one of the key contributors for the Minutemen on the defensive side of the ball.
Winning at Mullins
The Minutemen have won their past three games at the Mullins Center, and will go for their fourth against the Tigers.
After the tough loss on the road against Seton Hall, Kellogg feels that it is important to win games at home in order to build confidence for his young team.
I think its great, Kellogg said. The one thing in college basketball is that the major programs have a winning percentage of at least 70 percent at home, and Im trying to get that home-court advantage. Our guys have played well at home and felt more comfortable, and weve had some pretty good support, and were hoping to continue to get more students involved and to get more people here to support us.
Four of the teams the Minutemen are scheduled against on the road are in the top 40.
Shot Selection Says it All
In their first nine contests, the Minutemens fate relied on shooting the ball effectively and getting the ball where it needed to be. In its four victories, UMass is shooting 49.8 percent from the floor overall and 40.7 percent from 3-point range.
We watch the games and break down tape and pull all the shots out, Kellogg said. Ive tried to really zero in on practice and let them know thats a good shot, not a good shot, and at some point it becomes their own. They take ownership of what a good shot is for them, and for each player, it may be different.
In its five loses, the Minutemen have shot 34.8 percent from the field and 30.4 percent from beyond the arc.

MHERST - While fixing defensive and rebounding woes can only happen over time, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg believes his team at least can play harder.
"We did a lot of conditioning and training (Wednesday). We got a good sweat and made sure they understood how hard you're supposed to play," Kellogg said. Wednesday "we did sprints, so they know that's how hard you run every time."
He hopes that intensity carries over to tonight when the Minutemen (4-5) will try to get back to .500 when they host Grambling State at 8 at the Mullins Center in their last game before final exams. UMass has won three straight at the Mullins Center after falling to Cornell in its home opener.
While Kellogg has not been pleased with all of the results and less so with some of the scores in his team's five losses, he said the Minutemen are progressing.
"Every day we're trying to get these guys better," he said. "I think we've gotten better just about every day. Where we are compared to where we were, we've made huge strides. But we still have a long way to go."
He's looking forward to Dec. 19 to Jan. 19 - the month between the fall and spring semesters - when his players are focused only on basketball.
"The break is traditionally when teams I've been around have gotten better, especially with young dudes," he said. "It'll be a good opportunity to get better."
On paper, UMass does not face a weaker opponent this year than the Tigers, who are 1-4 with their only win coming over Paul Quinn, a non-Division I program, in the second game of the season. Grambling arrives in Amherst for the fourth of its six straight road games.
After losing at Marquette in Milwaukee on Nov. 21, the Tigers returned to its home state where it lost at the University of Louisiana-Monroe on Nov. 24. Grambling returned to the Badger State on Saturday where it was crushed by Wisconsin 79-46. Kellogg said he is not overlooking the Tigers.
"They're road warriors. They'll play anybody anywhere and they're battle-tested," he said. "They'll shoot a lot of 3s. If they get confidence, they're able to complete."
Grambling, which was 6-23 last year, is still recovering from the death of junior Henry White during a controversial conditioning run that led to former coach Rick Duckett's departure.
Interim coach Bobby Washington began his career as a graduate assistant at Eastern Kentucky under former UMass coach Travis Ford.
The Tigers do not have much size with only two players taller than 6-foot-6 and neither averages more than 20 minutes or five points per game. They have been outrebounded by an average of almost five per game.
Senior Ariece Perkins, a 5-foot-10 point guard, leads the team in scoring at 13.2 per game, but averages as many turnovers (2.8) as assists (2.8). Lance Fuertado is second in scoring at 12.8 points per game.
The game will be as close as Fuertado, a junior from Long Island, N.Y,, gets to playing near his home.
NOTES - Tonight's game is the second of a doubleheader at the Mullins Center.
The Minutewomen play providence at 6 p.m.
UMass senior guard Ricky Harris enters the game with 1,506 career points, which puts him No. 9 on the Minutemen's career list. He needs 28 to catch No. 8 Harper Williams (1,534). He's on pace to leave Amherst as the school's No. 4 all-time scorer.
The Minutemen are 4-0 all-time vs. teams from Louisiana.

MHERST, Mass. - Led by freshman Terrell Vinson's first career double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds), UMass delivered a dominating performance, defeating Grambling, 81-58, on Friday night at the Mullins Center. Vinson's double-double is the first one by a freshman since Rashaun Freeman in 2004. Playing with two of their top three scorers out with injuries (Ricky Harris and Freddie Riley), the Minutemen used a strong inside game, outrebounding the Tigers, 55-30, scoring 56 points in the paint, and tallying 28 second-chance points. UMass improved to 5-5 on the season, while Grambling fell to 1-5.
Gary Correia had the second double-figure performance of his career with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Vinson's points and rebounds were both career-highs, while Sampson Carter was UMass' third player in double-figures with 11. Hashim Bailey also set a career-high with nine points. Javorn Farrell and Sampson Carter added 10 and nine rebounds, respectively, to contribute to UMass' control of the glass.
George Akpele, Lance Fuertado, and Torez Young all scored 11 points for Grambling.
UMass used a late first half 10-0 run to break open a close game and went on to outscore Grambling 48-33 in the second half to cruise to the victory.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that featured 10 lead changes and six ties. The Minutemen struggled with their shooting early, especially from behind the arc where they missed their first five shots. The game was tied with 4:19 left in the half when Correia heated up, hitting two straight 3-pointers to start a 10-0 UMass run that gave the home team a 10-point lead, 33-23, with 51 seconds left. A basket by Grambling's Lance Fuertado with 22 seconds left in the opening half snapped a 4:13 scoring drought for the Tigers and sent UMass into halftime up 33-25.
Correia led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with nine points. Vinson added seven points as the Minutemen shot 39.4 percent (13-33) from the field to Grambling's 33.3 percent (11-33). UMass controlled the boards in the first half, 27-18, led by eight from Farrell. Fuertado led the Tigers with seven first half points.
UMass took over in the second half. After a quick Tiger bucket to start the half, UMass scored six unanswered points highlighted by Sean Carter and David Gibbs dunks. The Minutemen were up 11 with 15 minutes left when they went on a 9-0 run, started by a Anthony Gurley 3-pointer followed by three straight layups in transition to take a 20-point lead, 52-32 with 13 minutes to go.
The Minutemen continued to pull away down the stretch as Sampson Carter, Bailey, and Vinson all had streaks of six-straight points. The lead reached as much as 27 with 5:56 to go, before the game ended with UMass leading by 23.
The Minutemen return to action next Saturday, Dec. 19, when they host Memphis at the TD Garden in Boston at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Mullins Center Box Office or by calling 866-UMASS-TIX.
UMass is now 5-0 vs. teams from Louisiana, 3-0 vs. Louisiana-Lafayette, 1-0 vs. New Orleans and 1-0 vs. Grambling State.
Gary Correia drew his first-career start at point guard. It comes in his 75th career game.
Correia scored in double-figures for the second time in his career with 11. His high of 12 came at Rhode Island last season.
Correia tied his career-high in assists with six. He did it in his second-career game vs. Northern Illinois back in 2007.
Freshman Terrell Vinson had a career-high 20 points, his fifth-career game in double-figures.
It's the most points by a UMass freshman since Jeff Salovski had 21 vs. Xavier on Jan. 8, 2005.
Vinson also had a career-high in rebounds with 11.
It's the most rebounds by a UMass freshman since Rashaun Freeman had 18 vs. St. Bonaventure on Feb. 28, 2004.
Vinson had the first double-double for a freshman since Freeman had 31 points and 18 rebounds in that game vs. St. Bonaventure in 2004.
Freshman Javorn Farrell had a career-high 10 rebounds, his first-career game with a double-figure rebounds. His 10 rebounds came in 11 minutes.
Hashim Bailey had a career-high nine points. His previous high was 6 while he was at Memphis, vs. Tulane.
Anthony Gurley did not score in double-figures for the first time this season, as he netted 9.
David Gibbs tied his career-high with six assists and his career-high in steals with three.
Sean Carter had a career-high with four blocks.
UMass had its most rebounds (55) since posting 55 vs. La Salle in 2008.
UMass had two players (Vinson with 11 and Farrell with 10) with 10 or more rebounds since last season's finale when Tony Gaffney and Tyrell Lynch each 10 rebounds).
Ricky Harris (ankle) missed the first game of his 107 game career.
Freddie Riley also missed the game after minor knee surgery earlier this week.
Coach Kellogg on the game:
"I think it was a good game for our team. We took care of business and really crashed the boards, and we played pretty good defense. We didn't shoot the ball particularly well for us to win a game. We got some good play from our young kids, they're growing and getting better. I was really worried coming into tonight's game because we didn't have Ricky (Harris), we didn't have Freddie (Riley), Javorn (Farrell) was at half-speed. But I think our guys took care of business. Gary Correia showed some leadership to start the game, and we took care of business today."
Coach Kellogg on Ricky Harris' injury:
"I think he'll be okay by Saturday. We have tomorrow off and Sunday off. It was just one of those things, at practice he landed on a foot and unfortunately it kind of blew up at night. I was given the word this morning that he probably wasn't going to be able to play. So then I was worried all day thinking about it. To not have Freddie and him, your two shooters, you've got to knock down shots."
Coach Kellogg on Gary Correia's play:
"I think GC gave us some experience out there and we're obviously lacking that quite a bit. He's a good shooter and he hasn't always shot particularly very good in games, but I tell you what he's starting to get confident. And I think the more he plays the more confident he'll be out there. He's a junior, he's a guy that's played out there. He's a little more mature physically."
Coach Kellogg on Correia's game changing 3s:
"It felt like we went up two, four, back to two, and all of a sudden we were up 10. So we pretty much kept the lead from that point on."
Coach Kellogg on Javorn Farrell's injury:
"I think he was hurt but not hurt that bad. He was kind of hurt in practice but he was ready to play in the game. Once the lead got in hand I sent a little message to him."
Coach Kellogg on the small size of Grambling:
"I thought it would be a tough cover for us. Three quick guys is really three point guards out there. And they were smaller guys. A lot of times those teams can be trouble. What you have to do against those teams, which is what we did, is outrebound them. Beat them on the boards. I think the offensive rebounds, especially by Vinson, are what separated us in the game."
Coach Kellogg on Gary Correia's role changing:
"I think Gary's role is ever-changing. I see him being a more stable guy that's going to continue to get more minutes as the season goes on, or be more productive in the minutes that he's playing. He's getting more playing time at the position every game and he's taking on more of a leadership role in practice."
Gary Correia on his increased playing time:
"I knew my minutes would increase due to the fact that Ricky Harris is out, Freddie Riley is out and Javorn Farrell is slightly injured. Between the two spots, me, David Gibbs and Anthony Gurley we all played 30 plus and we used every aspect of our game."
Correia on Back to Back 3s changing the game
"I was just trying to play within myself, within the offence. Those are the shots that we work on everyday, especially with Ricky not being around; Coach Kellogg wanted me to be a little more aggressive. He sees me shoot everyday in practice and lately they have been falling for me. So if you check the numbers from last year to this year I am definitely shooting the ball a lot better."
Correia on his role and being able to start:
"It was fun, it was a good feeling especially when we came out on top."
Javorn Farrell on playing more minutes:
"I knew that without Ricky or Freddie playing I was going to have to take on a bigger role."
Terrell Vinson on losing two of top three scorers:
"We had to come together as a team because we had two guys down. It wasn't just an individual thing it was a team thing."
Vinson on how to attack a small team:
"It looked like we had 56 points in the paint so we just kept attacking the paint."
Vinson about playing Memphis at the TD Garden:
"I think it will be a lot better if we can get Ricky healthy, if not we need to do something like what we did today. We need to get scoring from other areas, defend, and keep them out of the paint. They are long and athletic and are going to drive it to the rim."
