MHERST - While the mood certainly is still jovial around the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team, the Minutemen are set on proving that Saturday's 73-72 win over Memphis was not a fluke.
To do that, they will have to play well against Boston College at 7 tonight at Conte Forum.
"We have to come Wednesday and show everybody this is how it is and it wasn't a fluke or anything," sophomore big man Sean Carter said. "We still need to get better defensively. We could have put that game away sooner Saturday, but we had a lot of turnovers.
"But everybody is playing with more confidence now," Carter added. "That was a good win. We needed that."
Gurley said he does not want Saturday's win to be the high point of the season for UMass (6-5).
"We came back and practiced hard," he said. We want to use this as a stepping-stone. We don't want to rest on this victory. We put it behind us.
"We know we have a tough game coming up on Wednesday night," Gurley added. "In order to reassure ourselves that we can compete with the best teams on any given night we have to go out on Wednesday and really prove to everyone that we can do this every night not just on one night."
Freshman forward Terrell Vinson has gotten his share of media attention after hitting the game-winning basket, but even he was putting the win over the Tigers in the rearview mirror,.
"It was a nice win, but we have BC on Wednesday," Vinson said.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he is curious to see how his team would respond.
"I just want to play well because I don't want our guys to take wins for granted. They need to build on the win and keep getting better every day," Kellogg said. "Hopefully they feel as comfortable going into Boston College and they play with the same passion and intensity that I'm looking for.
"You have to put everything in perspective," he added. "You played a good game against a good team. Major college basketball means putting together 30 games like that in a row."
The Eagles have been inconsistent this season at 7-4. They opened the season with wins over Dartmouth and St. Francis (N.Y.) before falling to a struggling Saint Joseph's team. After beating South Dakota State and losing to Northern Iowa, BC delivered its best stretch of the season with three straight wins over Providence, Michigan and Miami.
But the Eagles lost back-to-back games to Harvard and Rhode Island before beating fledgling Division I program Bryant 72-46 on Sunday.
The Boston College roster is almost identical to last year's team that beat the Minutemen 85-81 in overtime at the Mullins Center. The Eagles have no newcomers, but the one player they lost, star guard Tyrese Rice, is hard to replace.
Junior Rakim Sanders, a double-digit scorer each of his first two seasons at the Heights, has played just three games this season with an ankle injury, including the last two.
Corey Raji leads Boston College in scoring (15.4 points per game) and rebounding (8.4), while Joe Trapani (15.1 points, 7.4 rebounds) and Reggie Jackson (13.9 points, 7 rebounds, 4.5 assists) are not far behind.
NOTES - UMass freshman guard Freddie Riley rode the exercise bike and shot around during the second of two Monday practices, but he'll likely still miss Wednesday's game.
Chestnut Hill is the fourth place in Massachusetts where the Minutemen have played this season.
Ricky Harris (1,519 career points) needs 16 points to pass Harper Williams and move into eighth on the all-time scoring list at UMass.

MHERST - One win does not restore a team to glory. One shot does not launch a legend.
Still, the reverberation from freshman Terrell Vinsons winning basket Saturday has pumped life into the University of Massachusetts basketball program. Vinsons bank shot off an inbounds pass with a James Bond-like 0:0.7 on the clock gave the Minutemen a pulsating 73-72 win over Memphis at the TD Garden.
On Monday, the mood outside the Minutemens training room was buoyant, filled with laughter as the players filed in, many grabbing a tangerine from a rack of snacks. The orange orbs looked like tiny basketballs. For now - at least until tonight, when UMass plays Boston College at Conte Forum - the Minutemen have the whole thing in their hands.
While second-year coach Derek Kellogg was quick to point out that this was merely one game on the road of many, there was no short-changing the symbolic power of the win.
Televised by ESPN2, this game was UMasss first time on the states biggest basketball stage since 1997. The school logos were affixed to the legendary parquet. Hoping to reestablish a foothold in the state, the Minutemen broke out retro jerseys with Massachusetts tightly stitched across the front, as in the long-ago days when Julius Erving played the game above the rim at the Curry Hicks Cage.
UMass entered the contest with a soft 5-5 record. None of the wins had been significant, while the losses, in contrast, were sobering. Against quality opponents such as Michigan State and Seton Hall, UMass had been outclassed. Memphis was certainly in that category, entering at 7-1, with the lone loss 57-55 at top-ranked Kansas.
The young Minutemen - with five freshmen and two transfers - were double-digit underdogs against the Tigers. Kellogg admitted after the game that Memphis had the potential to not only beat us, but take care of us pretty good.
That didnt happen because UMass played with a focus and ferocity that had appeared only in small spurts through the seasons first 10 games. The Minutemen rebounded ravenously (a 44-24 edge) and played defense with tenacity. They found themselves down by only a point, 72-71, while inbounding the ball under their basket with 3.8 seconds left.
During a timeout, Kellogg conferred with top assistant Vance Walberg, then sat down on a chair, surrounded by his players. Chomping gum furiously, Kellogg mapped out a play. He instructed Gary Correia to use top scorer Ricky Harris as a decoy in the corner, then inbound the ball to Anthony Gurley, curling behind a back screen.
Memphis defended the play perfectly, though, and Correia was forced to improvise. He lofted a pass toward the basket, leading to a blender-like flurry of action as the ball bounced off a series of desperate hands, before arriving fortuitously in the big mitts of Vinson. He instinctively went up and banked the ball off the glass.
It seemed like it touched about eight peoples hands, Vinson recalled. Somehow it came to me.
For a game with such symbolic power, the crescendo could not have been better choreographed for UMass fans. Vinson quickly has arrived as the face of the future for a program desperate to return to national relevance. After seven straight NCAA tournament appearances in the 1990s, the Minutemen have missed the Big Dance 11 straight years.
Vinson, a 6-foot-7-inch forward from Baltimore who played one year of high school ball with Kevin Durant, was the unquestioned star of the show on Saturday, with team-leading totals of 21 points and nine rebounds.
Soft-spoken with a blend of serenity and confidence, Vinson has the initials and nickname made for the bright lights: TV. He was a top-50 recruit, the marquee member of Kelloggs Kids.
Though he has started from the first game (averaging 10.4 points and 5.0 rebounds), Vinson seemed a little tentative in the early going. He drifted between the perimeter and the post, picking his spots. He admits he had to learn to be more comfortable with the personnel and the coaches, how to score without hogging the ball, learning how to play off of everybody.
On Saturday, playing at the TD Garden, he lost all freshman jitters when the game began. Once the ball goes up, it just becomes basketball again, he said. Youve got to put the ball in the hoop. Everything that you love and prepare for . . . youve got to turn your phone off and just focus on the game, and not focus on the outside world.
With his cellphone shut down, Vinson answered the call of rebounding. It is an underappreciated part of basketball, Vinson believes, more will than skill. The most exhausting part of the game is trying to get a rebound, he said. Youre trying to outjump them, and when you come down with the ball, you get smacked. There are fouls, but they are not the kind of fouls the referees are looking for. There are a lot of things going on in the paint.
Vinson has an appealing court demeanor, placid under pressure, yet filled with animation at key moments. He slaps the floor, calls out to teammates. After big hoops, his smile lights the court.
You should have joy every second, because its a fun thing to do, said Vinson. Its fun to be out there, especially on an ESPN game with good friends watching at home.
Kellogg is impressed with the way Vinson carries himself. He plays the game like hes older than he is, said Kellogg. He has a calming sense about him out there. He just plays. He competes. He goes after it.
Harris, the teams unquestioned leader, has known Vinson for years from their days as Baltimore AAU players. Terrell, hes real mature, said Harris. Hes quiet. Hes humble. Hes always been a tough kid. Hes been a competitor all his life. Hes always played on a higher stage of basketball.
As a freshman at Montrose Christian School in Rockville, Md., Vinson couldnt help but be impressed by the teams senior star, Durant, who these days is averaging 27.2 points per game for the NBAs Oklahoma City Thunder.
I was a little in awe, Vinson said, but I wasnt amazed. He was just a basketball player like I was.
Maintaining that perspective will be important, Vinson knows, as the team closes out its nonleague schedule with games at BC and Davidson, before setting its sights on a much-improved Atlantic 10. The win over Memphis was great, but there is no time to bask.
Its a game that we can definitely learn from, Vinson said. Weve got to come out and play like that all the time.
HESTNUT HILL, Mass. - In front of a pro-UMass crowd at the Conte Forum, the Minutemen lost at Boston College, 79-67 on Wednesday night. After being held scoreless in the first half, Boston College's Corey Raji scored all of his 18 points in the second half as the Eagles pulled away. Beantown native Anthony Gurley led UMass (6-6 overall) with 23 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Sean Carter had 16 points and nine rebounds and Ricky Harris added 12. Hashim Bailey had a career-high 10 rebounds.
Joe Trapani also added 18 for Boston College (8-4).
The Eagles used a decisive 16-4 run midway through the second half to build a 12-point edge at 56-44 on back-to-back lay-ups by Raji with 10 minutes left in the half. BC made 14-of-19 field goals to start the second half after making just 12-of-37 in the first half (32 percent). That run broke a 40-40 tie with 14:28 left in the second.
UMass chipped away at the BC lead cutting it to five, 60-55 with 4:50 left on a Sampson Carter lay-up to finish a 7-0 run. But, Trapani canned a 3-pointer on the next possession to extend the lead back to eight for BC, 63-55 with 4:22 remaining.
The Minutemen had a life with 1:52 left as BC's Reggie Jackson was called for an intentional foul as UMass cut the deficit to seven three times in the final two minutes.
Boston College went to Raji early and often in the second half as he scored 12 of the Eagles' first 21 in the period as the Eagles took a 45-40 lead with 12:58 left on a Raji putback. BC took a 49-42 lead on a Trapani driving lay-up with 11:52 forcing Derek Kellogg to call timeout.
After an awful shooting first half for both teams, the Minutemen and Eagles were hot early in the second half as they traded baskets on both ends of the court. UMass tied the game on two occasions at 32 all and 40 all, coming on Ricky Harris and Gurley 3-pointers, respectively at 17:42 and 14:28. The game was tied six different times to that point, just UMass couldn't gain the lead.
It was a very ugly start for both teams as they combined for 9-of-36 from the floor (25 percent) in the first 11:30 minutes as BC held an 11-8 lead. UMass missed its first seven 3-pointers of the game before Gurley nailed one with 6:09 left in the first half to cut BC's lead to 15-13.
Gurley tied the game at 17-17 with a slick fastbreak lay-up off a Harris pass with 3:26 to even the game for the first time since 2-2. The teams finally starting hitting shots and BC took a 26-25 lead into halftime. Gurley led all scorers with 11 points. Despite the game's physical nature, neither team took a free throw in the first half. UMass outrebounded BC, 26-15 with Gurley grabbing six in the first 20 minutes.
After a break for Christmas, the Minutemen are back in action in one week at Davidson in North Carolina on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
Boston College continues to lead the all-time series in the Commonwealth Classic, 9-6, since it was started in 1995.
BC leads the all-time series, 25-18.
Anthony Gurley scored 23 points overall for his 11th game in 12 this season in double-figures. It was also his 37th career game with 10 or more points. It was his third game this season and sixth of his career with 20 or more points. It was one off his career high of 24.
Gurley had a career-high 10 rebounds in the game. His previous high was just seven rebounds.
Ricky Harris scored 12 (eight in the second half) for his 11th game this season in double-figures and 75th time in his career. He has scored 10 or more in 72 of his last 77 games.
Sean Carter scored in double-figures for the second time this season and third time in his career with 16 points to set a new career-high.
Sean Carter also had nine rebounds, one off his career-high.
Hashim Bailey had a career-high 10 rebounds.
Hashim Bailey took his third charge of the season midway through the first half.
Neither team attempted a free throw in the first half. The first free throw came with 17:50 left in regulation by Anthony Gurley, who made a pair.
UMass outrebounded BC 26-15 in the first half and 24-18 in the second half.
fter watching his team shoot 32.4 percent in the first half against UMass last night, you might think Boston College coach Al Skinner would have charged into the locker room, smashed a clipboard and chewed his players out for their poor execution.
Of course, none of those are things the mild-mannered coach would do. But he at least must have had some brilliant strategy session, right?
Not exactly.
After the first half, I didnt even talk about our offense, said Skinner, whose team led 26-25 at the break. We made a couple of suggestions for guys, but they knew they had good looks. It was just a matter of continuing to do that.
Skinners message, however understated, surely got across. BC (8-4) shot 58.1 percent from the field in the second half to pull away for a 79-67 Commonwealth Classic win at Conte Forum. It was the Eagles 10th win in their last 11 games against their intrastate rivals.
The duo of Corey Raji and Joe Trapani only combined for two first-half points, on a layup by the latter. But in the second half both of the junior forwards got in the flow and led the team with 18 points apiece.
Rakim Sanders, playing in just his third game after missing six with a sprained ankle, added 15 points and eight assists.
But the story was BCs defense, which held UMass to 36.8 percent shooting, and 3-for-21 on 3-pointers.
The key to the game for us is how well we play defensively, Skinner said. We held them. Their shooting percentage was down and I think that really was the difference in the ballgame.
UMass (6-6) was led by former Newton North star Anthony Gurley, who finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Sean Carter was a presence inside with 16 points and nine rebounds, but the Minutemen got little support from two of their top scorers.
Ricky Harris, in his second game back from a sprained ankle, had 12 points on 5-of-16 shooting and had seven of the Minutemens 16 turnovers. Freshman Terrell Vinson, the hero of Saturdays 73-72 upset of Memphis, was held to just two points.
The game was tied at 40 with 14:34 remaining before Raji keyed a 16-4 BC run to gain some breathing room. Gurley attacked the basket relentlessly and got to the free throw line to help pull UMass to within 60-55 with 4:53 to play, but Trapani answered with a 3-pointer to quiet the UMass portion of the 6,519 crowd.
BC made some plays when they needed to and we missed some easy ones down the stretch, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. We did a good job of rebounding (50-33 edge) but at times our inexperience came through a little bit.
is team shot 32.4 percent from the floor in the first half, but at the break Al Skinner didnt say a word to his players about offense.
Boston College and UMass spent the first 20 minutes of their matchup last night at Conte Forum throwing bricks at each other - from 3-point range, from around the rim, and every angle in between - to the tune of 24-for-71 combined shooting.
Three of Skinners most reliable shooters - Joe Trapani, Reggie Jackson, and Corey Raji - were a combined 3 for 19.
Still, not a peep about fixing things on the offensive end.
The way Skinner saw it, BCs offense would fix itself.
If you go back and look at it, I thought most of the shots guys took were good shots, Skinner said. Were sitting there on the bench like, Well, thats our offense. Thats what were about. Weve got to make the shot. Thats why youre able to make them in the second half at such a high percentage because they knew that those were their shot.
So in the second half, he sat back and watched the invisible hand work its magic.
The three elbow shots that Raji missed in the first half, he hit in the second.
Trapani missed three treys in the first half. He hit 2 of 4 in the second, including a big one with 4:31 left that stomped out a possible UMass rally.
After shooting so poorly in the first, the Eagles shot 58.1 percent in the second, and wound up with a 79-67 victory.
In the first half, obviously, our shots werent falling, said Trapani, who finished with 18 points and five rebounds. But we were playing good D and we held them to a low shooting percentage and we got the same shot in the second half and we were hitting them. So that was the glaring difference.
Skinner said he wasnt nearly as concerned with offense because of the way his team played at the other end. BC held the Minutemen to 36.8 percent shooting from the floor. UMass was particularly awful from 3-point range, connecting on just 3 of 21 from long distance.
The games where were successful were games where the opposing team shot less than 40 percent, Skinner said. And that proved out today to be the case.
The Minutemen went to a full-court press in the second half, but with more guards on the floor in Skinners retooled lineup, breaking it was a breeze.
They kept chasing the basketball, and as long as we kept the ball under control - which we did - we always had someone ahead of the court, Skinner said.
Invariably, that someone was Raji, the Eagles best finisher around the rim.
After starting the night 0 for 5, he finished with 18 points on 9-of-16 shooting to go along with seven rebounds.
The Eagles, who had been getting poor guard play recently, dished out 22 assists to just six turnovers, and among Jackson, Biko Paris, and Reggie Sanders there were only two turnovers in the backcourt compared to 16 assists.
Thats always going to be an important factor in the way we play, Skinner said. Were not a one-on-one team. I like to see the ball move. I like to see guys share the basketball because I think you get better looks.
Thats our biggest thing, Sanders said. Weve just got to slow down, let the ball bounce, and just take it from there. We dont need to be in no rush or have anybody speed us up. Thats when we get our turnovers.
Sanders, typically considered a scorer, left a different set of fingerprints on the game, dishing out eight assists (five in the second half). Recognizing the potential that could have down the line, he said, Its going to open things up for everybody else to score.
In the end, Skinners approach rubbed off on his players.
I think its more of a mind-set of if we play defense, offense will take care of itself, Trapani said. And I think it did this game.
HESTNUT HILL The Massachusetts mens basketball team hoped to prove its win over Memphis last Saturday was no fluke with a road win over in-state rival Boston College.
With two minutes, 48 seconds remaining in the UMass 79-67 loss to Boston College at the Conte Forum, that hope seemed possible as Sean Carter took a pass from a driving Anthony Gurley and put it in to cut the Eagles lead to 63-57 and appearing to give the Minutemen the momentum.
But just 17 seconds later BCs Biko Paris found an open Rakim Sanders, beyond the arc. Sanders, who was 2-for-12 from 3-point range prior to the game, hit the 3-pointer to extend the Eagles (8-4) lead, a lead that would not drop below seven the rest of the game.
Yeah, that was tough, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said of the play. Rakim hasnt shot the 3 real well, but he shoots it well against us, even last year.
UMass (6-6) trailed by as many as 12 points midway through the second half and in the middle of a 6:44 run where they failed to make a field goal. But despite the Minutemens troubles from the floor, Anthony Gurley hit 5-of-6 free throws to start what would be a 7-0 run by UMass, to cut the lead to five.
With 4:31 left to play, however, BCs Joe Trapani ended the run with his second 3-pointer of the half to put the Eagles up 63-55.
It was just one of those nights, Gurley said. Every night is not going to be Christmas, so I guess we just got to find other ways to get the job done.
Gurley finished with a game-high 23 points and his first career double-double with 10 rebounds.
Sean Carter missed his first career double-double by one rebound as he finished the night with 16 points and nine rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor.
BC was led by Corey Raji and Trapani as the two combined for 34 points in the second half. Trapani had two points in the first half while UMass held Raji, the Eagles leading scorer with 15.4 points per game, scoreless in the opening half.
Raji finished with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Trapani had 18 points and five rebounds.
BC made some plays when they needed to and we missed some easy ones down the stretch, Kellogg said. We did a good job of rebounding but at times our inexperience came through a little bit.
Kellogg was pleased with his teams rebounding, something that was helped by the 10 rebounds Hashim Bailey grabbed in his 11 minutes on the court.
The one thing I was happy with was that we had a 50-33 rebound edge, Kellogg said. Sean Carter and Hashim Bailey seem to be coming into their own.
Ricky Harris struggled for the Minutemen for the second consecutive game after returning from an ankle injury. Harris was held to just two points in the first half to go with six turnovers as he is also adjusting to playing point guard, a new position for the senior.
He hasnt even really shot the ball in practice, Kellogg said. It doesnt look like hes raising up and getting as much lift as he had before the injury.
Harris came out stronger in the second half finishing the night with 12 points on 5-of-16 from the floor and 1-of-8 from 3-point range.
UMass finished the night 3-of-21 from beyond the arc, with Gurley hitting the other two.
We cant shoot 3-for-21 from 3 and 14-for-24 from the free-throw line against an ACC team on their home court and expect to come out victorious, Kellogg said. We had some good looks that didnt go in and we missed as many open 3s as we have in quite some time.
The Minutemen found themselves down 26-25 going into halftime after they had a 5-0 run in the final 1:24 of the half. BC continually pulled away from UMass, but failed to create much separation until the second half.
UMass next play at Davidson to finish its non-conference schedule next Wednesday at 7 p.m.

HESTNUT HILL - Early in the second half Wednesday night, the University of Massachusetts and Boston College men's basketball teams appeared to be headed for another down-to-the-wire classic that has characterized the last few games of the rivalry.
But the Minutemen could not overcome their game-long shooting slump as the Eagles pulled away for a 79-67 win at Conte Forum.
The Minutemen shot 3-for-21 from 3-point range and went six minutes, 44 seconds without a field goal midway through the second half.
"BC made some plays when they needed to and we missed some easy ones down the stretch," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "We did a good job of rebounding but at times our inexperience came through a little bit.
"We can't shoot 3-for-21 from 3 and 14-for-24 from the free-throw line against an ACC team on their home court and expect to come out victorious," he added. "We had some good looks that didn't go in and we missed as many open 3s as we have in quite some time."
UMass junior Anthony Gurley said the Minutemen need to be able to win even when they do not shoot well.
"Every night's not going to be Christmas," he said. "We have to find a way to get the job done."
Eagles coach Al Skinner credited his defense with producing the victory.
"The key to the game for us is how well we play defensively. We held them their shooting percentage was down and I think that really was the difference in the ball game," Skinner said.
The UMass defense, which had been solid in the first half, slipped in the second as Boston College (8-4) shot 18-for-31 from the field after intermission.
Despite its offensive troubles, the Minutemen (6-6) were still alive late. A layup by Sean Carter with 3:28 remaining brought UMass within 63-57.
Then Rakim Sanders got the ball for the Eagles behind the 3-point line in front of the BC bench. Sanders had been 0-for-5 from the floor in the half, and several faces on the Eagle bench grimaced when Sanders elevated for the 3-point try. But more faces on the Minuteman bench cringed when the shot went in.
"We just couldn't recover from that," Sean Carter said. "It was a difficult night."
UMass never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
In the first half the leading scorers for both teams - Ricky Harris for the Minutemen and Corey Raji for Boston College - could not get anything going offensively. Harris had two points at intermission, while Raji was scoreless.
But Raji came to life in the second half with 18 points to lift the Eagles.
Harris finished with 12.
The loss wasted good numbers for Gurley, who had 23 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
"I was proud that he had 10 rebounds, but he tired a little and at the end he didn't spring back on defense like I'm accustomed to him doing," Kellogg said. "He had a good game, but he can continue to get better."
Gurley helped UMass control the glass for the second straight game as the Minutemen outrebounded Boston College 50-33.
Hashim "Big City" Bailey had 10 rebounds in 11 minutes, while Sean Carter added nine boards, including seven offensive, to go with 16 points.
"The one thing that made me happy was the rebounding edge. Sean Carter and Hashim Bailey are really coming into their own," Kellogg said.
The Minutemen can head home for Christmas before returning to practice on Sunday. They travel to Davidson to complete their nonconference schedule at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.

HESTNUT HILL - After missing the 81-58 win by the University of Massachusetts over Grambling State on Dec. 11, Ricky Harris has returned to the Minuteman lineup but his shooting stroke has remained on the sideline.
A late surge Wednesday night allowed Harris to extend his double-figure scoring streak to 20 games, but he finished 5-for-16 from the field and 1-for-8 from 3-point range in the 79-67 loss at Boston College.
The senior guard said the injury was not an excuse for his shooting woes, but admitted, "I don't have the same lift on my jump shot as I normally do."
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said the struggles by Harris have extended beyond games.
"He hasn't really even shot the ball well in practice," Kellogg said. "I need to spend some time with him in the gym to help him get his confidence back. He doesn't look like he's raising up and getting as much lift as he did before he got hurt."
NEW SCORING LEADER - Anthony Gurley's 23 points made him the Minutemen's leading scorer at 16.9 points per game. Harris scored 12 and his average fell to 16.7.
NO SEQUEL - After becoming the toast of the UMass basketball program with Saturday's game-winning heroics, freshman Terrell Vinson couldn't provide an encore.
Miscommunication between the referees and the scorer's table briefly gave Vinson two fouls one minute, 40 seconds into the game, forcing Kellogg to sit him down. The error was corrected as one foul belonged to Sean Carter, allowing Vinson to return.
But missing was the aggressiveness that marked Vinson's success in Saturday's 73-72 upset of Memphis. He finished with two points, two rebounds and four fouls in 23 minutes.
HOME ON THE ROAD - UMass fans made up a hefty number of the 6,519 in attendance at the Conte Forum as chants and cheers for the Minutemen often overwhelmed the Eagles fans from the upper rows from the arena.
MILESTONES - Hashim "Big City" Bailey's 10 rebounds and Sean Carter's 16 points were career highs.
NEXT UP - After a week off for Christmas, UMass (6-6) will fly to Davidson for its final nonconference game at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.
The Wildcats, who earned national attention the past three years with Stephen Curry, have struggled after he left school a year early to go to the NBA. Davidson is 4-8, but has won two of its last three games.
The Wildcats play Penn on Monday before facing UMass.
MISCELLANEOUS - Former UMass football and baseball star Doug Clark was in attendance.
Former Minutemen Tony Gaffney and Gary Forbes had tickets for the game but didn't make it.
The game featured three jump balls in the first seven minutes.
