MHERST, Mass. - Sharing the basketball was the theme on Thursday evening at the Mullins Center, as 11 different UMass players scored and recorded 24 assists on 29 field goals as the Minutemen defeated Brandeis, 83-60, in their season-debut exhibition game.
Freshman guard Daryl Traynham scored 15 points off the bench on 4-for-5 shooting, including 2-for-2 from behind the arc to lead the UMass offense.
Senior Anthony Gurley tallied 13 points to go with a game-high seven assists, while sophomore Sampson Carter scored 13 of his own.
Sophomore forward Terrell Vinson finished with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Minutemen shot 51.8 percent (29-for-56) as a team, including an impressive 52.6 percent (10-for-19) from 3-point range. The Judges shot 40.4 percent (23-57) from the field and were 6-for-25 from 3-point range.
Gurley's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 7:11 left extended UMass' lead to 70-41. The lead reached as much as 33, 78-45, on a Raphiael Putney free throw with 5:09 to go.
Different classes combined with just under eight minutes left when freshman Maxie Esho blocked a shot, leading to a fast break where senior found sophomore Sampson Carter for a one-handed dunk that gave UMass a 67-41 lead.
A one-handed Hashim Bailey jam with just under 11 minutes to go made him the 10th Minuteman to break into the scoring column and gave his club a 61-36 lead.
A Gurley 3-pointer with 15:20 left extended the UMass lead to 14, 52-27. Two minute later, Traynham nailed his second 3-pointer of the game to make it a 19-point game, 58-29.
The Minutemen took a 13-point lead into the half, 38-25. Eight different players made their way into the scoring column in the first 20 minutes, led by Traynham's eight points on 3-for-3 shooting and closely followed by Gurley and Riley with seven each.
After being ahead by as many as 16 on two occasions in the first half, the Judges began to hit some shots while the UMass shooters cooled off, leading to Brandeis cutting its deficit to 10, 27-17 with five minutes left in the opening half.
The UMass shooters came out of the gates hot, making their first six shots from the field and using a 16-0 run to jump out to an 18-2 lead seven minutes into the game.
The Minutemen open the regular season on Thursday, Nov. 12 when they host Rider at the Mullins Center in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
MHERST - There's obviously a grain of salt to take from any exhibition performances. If they were an indication of future performances, the University of Massachusetts would have retired numbers for Ronell Blizzard and Kyle Wilson.
With that caveat out of the way, here are a few observations from the Minutemen's 83-60 win over Brandeis Thursday:
� Daryl Traynham looked very promising and Gary Correia looked as solid as he has at anytime in his career. Given the questions marks about point guard play, that was particularly encouraging.
There were moments where Traynham was clearly trying to remember his responsibilities on defense. But his quickness was apparent and assuming he develops, he's got potential to be good on defense. He earned a few appreciative cheers from the Mullins Center crowd for diving on the floor.
His 15 points were an offensive highlight. He made both 3-pointers he attempted, one just to the right of the top of the key and the other in the left corner. He scored in traffic, getting his shot off against taller players and made 5-of-6 free throws which is always critical for a point guard.
"I thought Daryl made some plays in the first half when we were really struggling. He pushed the ball fast, made some layups and shot some 3s," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "He gambled a little bit on defense, but he also created some havoc."
Traynham had one assist, a pretty alley-oop to Raphiael Putney, and could have had more if his teammates had finished a few good looks. He had four turnovers, a couple of which looked like he rushed things a bit, but all in all they weren't overly concerning.
"It felt good to get my first game in the Mullins Center. I was a little nervous so I'm happy to get it over with. Now next Friday I'll be ready," said Traynham, whose team opens the season at 7:30 p.m. against Rider. "I wanted to work on my defense. I'm trying to get better and trying to get my teammates involved for us to get better."
At times in his career, Correia has played very sporadic minutes and when he does get in, he's tried too hard to prove he belonged in the game and occasionally forced things. On Thursday he looked very under control. He had six points, four assists and one turnover. He'll have to raise his game to have similar production against more athletic and quicker opponents, but on Thursday he played within himself effectively.
� If Anthony Gurley carries his approach from this game over, he could have a good year. Too often in the past Gurley has been tunnel-visioned with the ball. He'd focus on scoring and stop seeing the floor. On Thursday, he had seven assists to go with his 13 points. He didn't force shots and even gave the ball up on the break, a rarity in the past.
"The thing I was most happy with was Anthony Gurley. He made some plays tonight he would never have made in the past," Kellogg said. "He got other guys involved. I hope that's a sign that he's becoming or is a complete basketball player really working for the team."
� Sampson Carter was a starter early last year and faded a bit down the stretch. Thursday looked like a nice jumping off point for him. He had 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and three rebounds.
"He's listening and he's playing well. Defensively he knows where to be and offensively he's not just jacking bad 3-balls like he did last year," Kellogg said. "It's nice to see sophomores make that jump."
Carter said he's more in his element this season.
"I'm way more confident and comfortable this year," Carter said. "There's no more nervous chills. I'm not thinking all the time. I'm just playing, I'm comfortable."
� Rebounding remains a question mark. Brandeis was big for a Division III team, but not so much that they should have hung with UMass on the boards as the Minutemen held a slim 35-31 rebounding edge. Big men Sean Carter and Hashim "Big City" Bailey each had just four rebounds. Terrell Vinson led UMass with seven.
� Luke Cothron was at the game. The nonqualifier, who is rumored to be considering withdrawing from school, sat with Cady Lalanne and Jesse Morgan, who are also sitting out. UMass officials prevented him from being interviewed.
� Kellogg thought his team is just scratching the surface of its potential.
"I was happy that we shared the basketball. We did some good things on the offensive end. All in all it was a good effort. We definitely have a lot of room to grow. I think this team is going to get better as the season goes on."
� The crowd was officially 628, which is ugly even for an exhibition game. It's particularly sad because the game was benefitting the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. Admission was two nonperishable canned goods.
� Speaking of the food bank, it would have been nice if the public address read some sort of public service announcement on behalf of the food bank. It could have replaced the out-of-town exhibition scores. It's hard to believe that any of the 628 in attendance were clamoring for the results of Marshall and Concord.
