Camby wins the Naismith and Wooden awards as national player of the year and is chosen a first-team All-American by every major publication ... Leads UMass to a 35-2 record and the school's first berth in the Final Four, averaging 20.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.9 blocks ... Collapses before Jan. 14 game at St. Bonaventure and lays motionless on the court for some time before being hospitalized. After several days of testing, he returns to the team, though the reason for his collapse is never specified ... In loss to Kentucky in national semifinals, Camby collects 25 points, 8 rebounds and 6 blocks ... Reports surface that Camby has been receiving cash, gifts and favors from attorney Wesley Spears, a violation of NCAA rules. (Sports Illustrated article from 1997 that details the agent dealings.)

In the Minutemen's last game of the season, an NCAA tournament matchup against Maryland, Camby outplays future NBA No. 1 pick Joe Smith with 32 points and 10 rebounds.
