Never wanted to post anything here about Izzy but now that he is gone, good riddance. I knew him on a personal level, and I can tell you this kid was never going to become a solid player. His attitude was absolutely horrible, all he cared about was going out and did not take a single thing serious (always bragged about not studying or not doing his homework). Many people knew him (because he stuck out due to this height), but no one took him seriously, he was more of a character than anything. And to be honest, playing with him at the rec center, he is not even good. Best of luck hopefully he changes his attitude around, highly doubt it though.

^Thankfully, all indications point to Berger, Coleman and Dyson being excellent students. In fact, on a related note, in terms of quality of kid, this is the most excited I've been in 15 years about a recruiting class. Maybe it's because we have twitter now, so you feel in some odd way, you can get to know a bit about a kid, but this group just seems incredibly mature, nice, bright, and team-oriented in a way that's really impressive. I've been borderline touched by a lot of the social media content these kids have put on. I've also heard from really smart, reliable sources that they're all really hard-working quality people.
And, honestly, I hadn't always heard the same thing about Jesse or Izzy. Not that they were bad kids, per se, but they weren't exactly paragons of the student-athlete model. Javorn was a super bright kid from all indications, but I often felt he had a bit of a tool cool for school attitude. Freddie, pre-senior year, just seemed depressed and not always locked in (though because he was so honest about it, I kind of always loved him anyway and then his senior year he became one of my all time favorites). I guess what I'm getting at is I think this group is going to be the hungriest, most team-oriented one we've seen in a while. Yes, we have five new faces, but DG has been on campus since last summer and practiced with the team. Santee was on campus for a year too and Coleman and Dyson have already arrived, with Berger coming up next month. Samp, though he sometimes drives me crazy, has always been a high-character team-first guy and Chaz and Putney have a lot to prove. I just think there's a lot of good right now in terms of having the right pieces from a team-first vantage point. Yes, we have question marks, but we have guys who want to be here and guys with something to prove. That's a good thing.

Not true...that is why it is called an Academic Progress Rate. As long as you are in good standing and passing and progressing acceptably toward graduation, the rating is not hurt.njumass08 wrote:All non graduating transfers hurt our APR. Really hope he got his grades up that second semester. What a disappointment.
What got UConn in trouble was Boone, Armstrong, and Villanueva. Once they all declared for the draft, they never attended another class and received "incompletes" or failing grades in the spring semester.
If everyone that left school early hurt the APR, kentucky would never play in a tournament again. The reason they are okay is that their athletes complete the school year acceptably.
UMass...the best is yet to come
He is definitely hurting our APR, and so is Jesse. Transfers hurt.
From the NCAA website:
Anyone know if there are "bonus points" awarded in cases like Lou Roe coming back to earn his degree?
From the NCAA website:
I think we'll be 920 or 940 for this past year due Jesse and Izzy but there are some other adjustments that are made. Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one retention point for staying in school and one eligibility point for being academically eligible. A team’s total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by one thousand to equal the team’s Academic Progress Rate score.

Last season, he was arguably the lowest on our depth chart, so when he didn't put the effort into the classroom, his expendability became crystal clear. I feel pretty safe in betting we'll never see him in a UMass uniform again.
If he can his grades in order, I still don't see him having much of a shot at getting back into a mid-major or better D1 program.
Good luck, Izzy, but we won't be crossing paths again.
