Jjmc85 - its McCutcheon's fault UMass abandoned the pro-style offense for the spread. Molnar had been running that before UMass and thats what he knew. This was likely discussed in the interview.
.
Is this true?
I think he meant Charley had been running the spread before UMass and McCutcheon knew that and discussed it. So it's McCutcheon's fault that UMass hired a spread offense guy instead of a Pro-Style guy.
I think Miami (OH) just wrote it poorly. I had to re-read it a couple times.

Oh. Ok. I read it as "Molnar wanted to run the ProStyle, but McCutcheon made him run the spread instead."

And, if that was the case, I was going to start a kickstarter to buy out McCutcheon.

I apologize in advance for being reactionary, but my first thought upon hearing this news: McCutcheon needs to go.
His last two football hires have used their five collective years to undo everything that was great about UMass football and drive this program into the fucking toilet. I don't care what kind of pressure he was feeling...he hand picked a guy to lead us in this transition (and to lead us out of the hole his last hire dug us into) and the fact that he got TWO years before being fired - despite everyone knowing we should not expect success in either year - is an indictment of McCutcheon's performance, not Molnar's. He flat-out picked the wrong guy, and IMHO that is a major vote of no confidence in his ability to do his job, regardless of his success in hiring for Olympic sports.

Only a few things bug me about this, because it is his opinion. His childish name calling - cheatin' coach cal -- his failure to mention the team will play half its home games in Amherst next year and the fact that he does not seem to understand that while spending money the school is also taking in more money. That said, it is his opinion, and I happen to agree with him that no one in these parts has really ever cared about "big boy" football except when Doug Flutie was at BC.

I think we'd all be a lot happier if no one posted his stories anymore. We know what he's going to write. Who was shocked when he mentioned the '96 basketball team? He has the next hundred UMass articles already written, and they're all like that.

To me this is great news! Molnar was over his head, plain and simple.
At the airport after the Wisconsin game, I was talking to a high level football supporter/alum and he told me that there was a feeling that Molnar wasn't the right coach for the football program. This person is a VERY successful businessman and I was left with the feeling that he didn't think Molnar would be around long.
The bad news (or good) is I just won the game ball from the Miami of Ohio game signed by Charley--I'll still cherish it.
I wonder if Whip still has it in him to be a head coach...
GO UMASS!

Just saw the CCSNE report on the firing and of course the "Cal cheating" thing had to be brought up as well by of all people S. Buckley.

Shaughnessy contradicts himself when he says FBS could kill UMass football, when in fact FCS and its lack of revenue killed BU and Northeastern football.

He couldn't even get that done on time--much like his play calling.

He doesn't know that. He thinks losing is the only reason a team is cut.

Floyd and Dennis, I still haven't sent out my Christmas cards yet, does that make me as bad as Charley?

. Or do I just have a bad intern working for me?
