Game 29, 2013-14: at Duquesne

Post by maxprime20 » Mon Feb 24, 2014 2:53 pm

I realize this isn't really a "hot" game per se, but I live around these parts so it's the only regular season game I'll be able to attend (hoping to make it out to an A-10 tournament game).

Anyone else making the trip to Pittsburgh for this game?

Coming off a big win and being back at home Duquesne has 5 days to prepare for us as they don't play this weekend. Huge 2 game road trip for us.

Duquesne's could be to St. Louis as George Mason is to us as they almost beat St. Louis in Pittsburgh the first time around. Just like GMU almost beat us at their place then came and won in Amherst.

I fucking detest everything about Duquesne. I don't think there's another program in the country I can say that about. Bush league city.

Actually scratch that. I think they have a terrific coach. He'll right the ship and bolt for greener pastures, meaning I'll be able to go back and detest everything about that program again. That game 2 years ago still grates on me. Only game of my life in which, to this day, I remain convinced that the refs were on the take. Couple that with that shit hole gym and their community access level announcing duo and I hope we win this game by 50.

I actually really like Duquesne. My sister went there and I visited her several times. Pittsburgh is a really underrated city IMO, still suffers from its reputation during the height (or depths) of its industrial past. The city is all hills and rivers and Duquesne is set very nicely on one of the higher points in the city. I'd always found the people to be very down to earth and for my money the city and people are a heckuva lot more like Boston than cities like Philly or NYC. With that said, Duquesne certainly plays 3rd fiddle to Pitt and Carnegie Mellon but I was a lot more impressed with it and Pittsburgh than I ever thought I would be. This game still scares the hell out of me... hopefully the guys were watching the Saint Louis/Duquesne game when they got in to Ohio last night.

Crazy as it sounds I wouldn't be shocked if we lost and then beat SLU and won the A10 tourney.

But let's just win.

I agree Marty. I've thought all along the St. Louis game is the least one I worry about, but they need to get their confidence back with a win. I'm still seething about the Dayton loss. Should have stepped up to the challenge.

I've had a bad feeling about this one for a while, going back to the beginning of league play. I hope we come out and defend like we did against GW. If we play hard, smart defense and limit offensive rebounds to less than 5. I think we win. I really would love for use to get after it on our offensive boards. We're at our best when we're getting second thoughts. I think DG made that enough on the o-boards today, Maxie usually does, Cady did what he could, but I'd love for the team to have the mindset of dominating the boards at both ends on Wednesday. With playing the 3 guard lineup so often, our guards need to make an effort to get in there and help on the defensive boards. Too often we had 3 guys standing at the 3 point line today watching, and it wasn't just Chaz and the guards, Put was out there, Cady does it when he gets stuck out there.

We just need to come out with fire, would love to see a 40 minutes effort that results in a 15 point win which I think we're fully capable of if we bring it for 40 on defense and the boards. The Dukes are not good on the boards, very average.

I just hope we don't come out like we often do against teams that are suppose to be "bad". Duquesne is riding high after the St. Louis win, a hot start for them will parlay the confidence in that game through our game. If we come out and take care of business I think we're well on our way to having a good March.

Have a feeling of loyalty to Duquesne, as they are one of only three that were there (Eastern Eight) at the beginning. I know they left for a year, but they came back! Like GWU, a longer sense of history than the rest of the conference.......not a long history (1976), but its all we have !

I feel like I'm in the minority here but I feel really good about this game. I think that we come out with fire in our hearts and win comfortably. I'm expecting HUGE games from Esho and Chaz.

I also really like the placement of this game as if we win it gives us some great momentum heading into senior night after a tough road loss in dayton. Can't wait for Wednesday!
