2019 Recruiting
Re: 2019 Recruiting
East has improved a ton since last year, already, and especially on defense. Just look a film of him at Combine.

Are you implying that we finally have a coaching staff that is capable of player developmentDoctorJ wrote: Wed Nov 13, 2019 10:27 am East has improved a ton since last year, already, and especially on defense. Just look a film of him at Combine.

Hand up. Somewhere on here I mentioned he was the Freshman coming in with the least amount of talk/hype and wasn't too sure how much PT he'd get. I think this was around the VI trip. He's so steady. And really that's all they need at this point. But down the line he could really be something special.69MG wrote: Wed Nov 13, 2019 10:24 am Couldn't find a KAEO on Sean East. How many of us, myself included, didn't think all that highly of him when he was recruited. Few offers, had to take a prep year to get noticed, may not be a true point guard, etc. I'm having a giant bowl of crow for breakfast and thrilled to eat it. I can't remember a freshman point guard with this much poise and feel for the game since (I don't have an answer, maybe Chris Lowe).
20 assists and 2 turnovers in his first 3 college games. Are you kidding me!! The 80 footer was dessert, almost like a higher power saying "you've worked hard and done all the right things so here's a little gift for you!".

I don't recall many people being high on him. Not that people were putting him down, but just not high on the recruitment. There were a few, but not many.

Re: 2019 Recruiting
Someone from East's hometown posted this in the Facebook team page. Crazy that a kid who played so closely with the #5 Overall recruit in the ESPN Top-100 2018 rankings (and a Celtics lottery pick) wasn't recruited at all in HS. Then he goes to a prep school for a year, gets stronger and now he's with us. Pretty awesome.

Respectfully: I think he's shown thus far that he's far more than "steady." That may end up being the case, but through three games he's been nothing short of spectacular.natwam2547 wrote: Wed Nov 13, 2019 10:41 amHand up. Re: 2019 Recruiting
Great article. Sean East seems to be the coup of the 2019 class, which is saying something considering TJ Weeks also appears to have been criminally underrecruited. I have the think at this point in the season Tre and Sean are in the driver's seat for All Rookie team (is that a thing) and TJ has a shot too but I'm not sure how steady his game will be compared to the other 2. Particularly until Kolten gets back Sean East is going to be the heartbeat of this team.natwam2547 wrote: Wed Nov 13, 2019 11:40 am Someone from East's hometown posted this in the Facebook team page. But I definitely didn't see the scoring prowess.Re: 2019 Recruiting

I watched some of the game tape. Specifically, the first one Niles posted (not the new ones) and some of the second one. I saw a guy who was an excellent passer, who recognized the open man and got the ball to him in a hurry.

Re: 2019 Recruiting
The thing I really like about Sean is his ability to change speed on a dime and get his shot off. He's had some drives where he just takes off and gets that floater to drop. Not an easy shot at all. And his ability to stay in control and command the game is excellent for a kid in his first three games. Rarely has he been out of control.
Its early, but I'm liking this group of freshman and how the team has come together. Everyone has contributed and all seem genuinely happy for each other. Stay hungry

That was me that posted that on the UMass FB page. I watched East play all through High School He was so fun to watch I know he hit buzzer beater about 10-15 feet shorter than the one he hit the other night in HS. He got better every year and I think if he didn't play with Langford he would have scored more he had a lot of good team mates during his four years they where so dominant those four years. They went 100W/10L during their four years. And 1 State championship It should have been two they got beat by a buzzer beater at semi state 64-62 I believe it was #1or2 vs #2or3 in the state If I recall Langford lost the ball out of bounds with 4 seconds left with the score tied. Warren Central player ran the court and put up a little floater that went in as time expired. If they won that game they probably would have won their second championship.natwam2547 wrote: Wed Nov 13, 2019 11:40 am Someone from East's hometown posted this in the Facebook team page. Re: 2019 Recruiting
Also after their senior year Langford and East both played on the Indiana All Star team together they play the Kentucky all stars every year two games one in Indiana and one in KY. I will admit it probably helped East making the team that the Coached named to coach the all stars was his coach at New Albany. I think Rob Phinesse (Indiana University) point guard got more playing time then East but I'm not sure. I did not see the games but Rob had already committed to IU and East really wasn't being recruited which shocked all of in New Albany this quote from INDY Star paperMfarmer72 wrote: Fri Nov 15, 2019 9:02 amThat was me that posted that on the UMass FB page. 'The 6-foot East emerged as one of the state’s top point guards as he averaged 18.2 points per game and shot nearly 50 percent from the 3-point line as a senior. The uncommitted East went over 1,000 career points late in his senior season'"
He averaged 18.2 points and Langford averaged over 35pts per game. It was hard to believe that a PG averging that many PPG with a Lottery pick as a teammate was so over looked. their senior year they went 25/2 they lost to the team I mention above at Semi State and to the County Rival 49 to 47 and Langford was playing with the Flu and the Rival was ranked 4th or 5th in the state at the time and the game was an away game for New Albany.
Umass is lucky to have landed him I was hoping IU would go after him but they never did. Umass has a lot of New fans from southern Indiana. I know the bar I go to watch games have been streaming Umass games.

Glad to hear the locals are all still rooting for him and that the games are getting some airtime there as well. I wonder if there was a bar streaming the last game and how everyone reacted to that full court buzzer beater.

Great to hear a hometown guy speak so well of Sean. I really like the kid and think he's going to be a helluva player here. Steal for sure for UMass. Welcome to UMassHoops, hope you stick around to enjoy the program bouncebackMfarmer72 wrote: Fri Nov 15, 2019 11:10 amAlso after their senior year Langford and East both played on the Indiana All Star team together they play the Kentucky all stars every year two games one in Indiana and one in KY.
