A temporary hardship ‘contract’? how does that work in college sports?

Is he getting paid? Does he take short courses to be considered a student-athlete?

It doesn't. He signed with the Rockets, not the University of Houston (although it wouldn't surprise me if the UH coach had players on the payroll).
They're playing MACsketball. We love that MACsketball.

The current Sports Illustrated has a story about guys with the shortest NBA careers - one minute or less. They are called "Minutemen." The record is a guy that played 3.9 seconds in 2010.

In a paragraph about G League call ups during covid there is this: "Guard DeJon Jarreau logged one minute with the Pacers on Oct. 29." it appears that Deeky is once again a Minuteman.
