Preseason Polls

Post by eldonabe » Wed Jul 31, 2024 10:07 am

I don't think I saw anything like this posted yet so starting this thread.

College football News just posted their top 134, The good news is that they go from worst to first so you don't have to scroll down very far to find the Minutemen.

https://collegefootballnews.com/colleg ... -1-to-134

SIX of the bottom 14 are from the MAC (not including Umass)

TEN of the bottom 24 are from the MAC (not including Umass)

The highest ranked team in MAC is Miami at #83.

WOW! and YIKES

Power conferences have separated from the G5 and FCS. Remember there are 364 Division 1 schools and 29 conferences. So the MAC is in the top 10 of the 29 conferences, as is the A10. UMass basketball finished with a Net of 91 and football finished #123. Not to bad considering one was in an attractive conference and one had no conference.
Be proud of the present and look to the future.

What? Steve - you ok? This is a football thread bud.

The top 134 is for all FBS schools in football... There 12 teams in the MAC - ONLY 2 are rated better than #100 and none better than #83...

This should clarify how bad MAC BB was last year. The A10 was 8th in Conference Net Rankings and UMass was #91. The MAC was 23rd in Conference Net and the highest team (Akron) was 108. Here's the whole picture for the A10 and the MAC. Does this mean we'll run through the MAC, no. Should we, probably yes.

Very true. UMass has been bad. In 2023 we finished with a Net of 203 and above 150 for a few years. Those years do not define us and hope MAC BB get's it's shit together. It will also be interesting who will be #14.

The MAC well outdraws the A10 in conference tournament attendance.
Conference Tournament Attendance

MWC 9,465
MAC 8,060
A10 6,703

AAC 6,431
MVC 5,430
WCC 3,978
SBC 1,834
CUSA 1,750

ESPN has their Preseason 2024 Football Power Index available.

Umass is #125 actually ahead of 3 MAC schools - their projected record is 4-7 and a 0.0% chance of making a bowl game

11 of 1 MAC schools are #100 or worse
Miami Cracked the top 100 at #90

The MAC definitely did not have a great football season last year, and it's reflected in these polls to start this year. Certainly hoping for a rebound from an overall conference perspective this year as we head into conference play the following year.... but the conference being a bit down might be a benefit for UMass if we can show improvement this season and moving forward.
