Portal MBB 2025
Re: Portal MBB 2025
A lot of A10 entries into the portal already. Surprisingly, at least to me, is that there are none from UMass (YET).

Not gonna be a lot of interest in kids who cannot shoot.... (I am being a dick, but it is true).69MG wrote: Mon Mar 24, 2025 11:31 am A lot of A10 entries into the portal already. Surprisingly, at least to me, is that there are none from UMass (YET).

Re: Portal MBB 2025
I am sure there will be. When a player gets a scholarship it is NOT guaranteed for 4 years just 1 year renewable each year so I would think that there will be some players that are not getting more scholarships and will have to hit the portal. It is just a matter of time.
Re: Portal MBB 2025
I took a look at portal entries from the MAC and there are so many that there isn't enough time to check them all out. This particular player caught my attention. He's the leading scorer on Toledo, a 6'6 guard who shot 44% from 3 this year. I know nothing about him except the numbers. I wonder if the staff is paying particular attention to MAC transfers?

Re: Portal MBB 2025
He must be a very good lock down defender because he has less than 1 steal and 1 block per game. Unfortunately, he can't shoot so I'll pass on this one unless someone who has seen him play can sway me.0Justin Byerly @JustinByerly

^ I haven’t seen him play either, but DPOY is no joke, I would take him.

I think this is the old system based on the NCAA ads running that mention what a scholarship entails and they lead with “Guaranteed “, so I take that to mean the 1 year renewable are a thing of the past.Berkman wrote: Mon Mar 24, 2025 3:13 pm I am sure there will be. Re: Portal MBB 2025
we should be concentrating on big ten bench dwellers. It would be smart to focus on Midwest guys who are at the MAC/MV level as UMass is easily the highest rated school in both conferences. Get guys who can hit 3s. I dont give a crap about defensive players of the year who cant shoot.
Re: Portal MBB 2025
I see you want to re-run the McCall approach? Getting guys who can shoot 3s without regard to anything else is a recipe for disaster and I’m pretty confident that Frank has no intention of pursuing that strategy.stevemaz wrote: Tue Mar 25, 2025 5:19 am Get guys who can hit 3s. Re: Portal MBB 2025
This is not the NBA (yet). You still need some semblance of inside/outside game. No rebounding will kill you in the long and short run. No inside scoring will choke off outside shooting. The levels of talent are much different than in college - you get away with some things in the Pro's that you cannot in college.NilesGold wrote: Tue Mar 25, 2025 7:34 amI see you want to re-run the McCall approach? I hate to say it, but we have to put our faith in Frank now and see what he comes up with. This upcoming season is the very definition of "blind faith".

As of 10:00 this morning, 33 portal entries from the A10 but none from UMass. I'm sort of in shock.

Re: Portal MBB 2025
I'm assuming there is no news yet because the players know there is more money in play... probably going through discussions with the Department/MassCo first.

Re: Portal MBB 2025
I hope that is not the case.... If you (they) are only playing here for the money after the season this squad just put up, don't offer almost any of them anything.InnervisionsUMASS wrote: Tue Mar 25, 2025 9:42 am I'm assuming there is no news yet because the players know there is more money in play... probably going through discussions with the Department/MassCo first.
I suppose there is one bright side to this, if you have a player that you feel is not s good fit or is just not performing as expected, all you have to do is not offer them any money and they will leave.

I'm not at all suggesting those discussions will result in the full team running it back. There's two sides to those discussions, of course. But if these players aren't seeing larger money options elsewhere, why wouldn't they wait a bit to see how the conversations play out here first?
