Not at all. You'll see guys smaller than that going first or second round in the NFL draft no doubt. Instinct, knowledge, and quickness is much more important.sbloombe wrote: Sat Jan 17, 2026 6:25 pmIs 6’4” 250lbs small for an edge rusher? Simple Google search for "average size college edge rusher" results in this:
"The average college edge rusher is around 6'3" tall and weighs between 240-260 pounds,"...

Edge Rusher is a LB who can put their hand in the dirt. Not a traditional DE. Big difference. They line up vs TE, not OT often. Speed is what matters.InnervisionsUMASS wrote: Sat Jan 17, 2026 10:52 pm Simple Google search for "average size college edge rusher" results in this:

Re: Portal- 2026 Season
Umass had a very productive Saturday signing some potentially impactful transfers:
Devin Matthews WR - East Texas A&M
Greg Klingensmith OL - William & Mary
Justin Krueger DL - William & Mary
Jordan Washington RB - Murray State
Joe Griffin WR - BC
Griffin will be a day 1 starter who should greatly improve the UMass passing attack. Klingesmith should be in the mix for a starting position on the OL. Krueger seems like he will be a regular part of the DL rotation. Jordan Washington and Devin Matthews are both intriguing and I'm looking forward to seeing them in person.

Recruiting 101
If the players you bring in aren’t better than the ones you already have, you won’t get better; so why bother bringing them in.

Re: Portal- 2026 Season
Because a) recruits can develop and improve - a reason why they're recruited; b) different players have different skills/capabilities and c) we need depth since injuries are inherent to football (see e.g. Bo Nix).

Devin Matthews had nice numbers at East Texas A&M.. and with TY Harding coming back, I think Pop Watson will have effective WRs to throw the ball toJack wrote: Sun Jan 18, 2026 11:48 am Umass had a very productive Saturday signing some potentially impactful transfers:

None of these skill position improvements matter if the trenches aren't shored up. I'm not taking the bait this year.inthescoop wrote: Mon Jan 19, 2026 2:25 pmDevin Matthews had nice numbers at East Texas A&M.. and with TY Harding coming back, I think Pop Watson will have effective WRs to throw the ball toJack wrote: Sun Jan 18, 2026 11:48 am Umass had a very productive Saturday signing some potentially impactful transfers:

Re: Portal- 2026 Season
Building the trenches is most important, that is fair. The dude that we just got, Greg Klingensmith, started 17 games. That's a number you want to see, we need starting experience on that lineminutefanjsf wrote: Mon Jan 19, 2026 3:16 pmNone of these skill position improvements matter if the trenches aren't shored up. Hear you jsf. I'll be conservative with 4, but bowling is not out of the question barring injuries as bad as last year.
Be proud of the present and look to the future.

Speaking of the O Line, has Jayden Bass announced where he's going yet?

Another QB committed to UMass - RJ Johnson from Florida A&M, had 18 TDs and 4 INTs last season.

Re: Portal- 2026 Season
Just added a huge DL from UConn @ 6'3, 320. No ide how good he might be, but on the interior of the DL, size does matter.

Re: Portal- 2026 Season
The UConn DL who transferred in didn't play this year as a freshman, but was rated an 89 out of HS by 247 with offers from BC, Pitt and VA Tech among others.
