Quick story -- for one season Joe D was the girls basketball coach at North Reading High School. The girls, parents and administration loved him, but he got offered the principal's job at Matignon and once he took it he could no longer coach. Really nice guy and a really good coach.

Not sure what you have been listening to, but the announcers yesterday said it at least twice and I have heard it several other times this season.

I don’t know about that but it was definitely pre-Internet smartphone etc. Students had fewer entertainment options then. A walk to the Cage for a game was well worth taking.
Had freshmen been eligible to play then, Joey (Sr.) and Julius (Fr.) would have played together. Instead, every home game was a double-header; the freshman game followed by the varsity.

My best UMass PGs ever (not including Pip, who will finish somewhere on this list when all is said in done):

1) Chaz Williams
2) Alex Eldridge
3) Carl Smith
4) Edgar Padilla
5) Anton Brown (his alley-oop to Herndon in the Oklahoma game automatically qualifies him)
6) Joe DiSarcina (no, we didn't have peach baskets then, but at my age it feels like it.

If anybody wants to go really back and has the time, ask me about a guy named Clarence Hill.

Relative to the previous post, Joe DiSarcina and I were in the same class. Freshmen were not eligible to play varsity then, so the Cage would be packed for the freshman game with Julius and then pretty much empty out for the varsity game. The students knew.

Schools all-time leader in assists is also one of the most selfish players to ever play here. Ok then. :roll

Is Ricky Harris not considered a PG? Not seeing he’s up there but I never hear him even being discussed during these 15 different UMass history PG convos.

I'd love to have seen Chaz play at UMass with a coach with a different coaching style than DK.

How about Rick Pitino? He was a pretty good PG for Jack Leaman.

Ricky Harris one of my all time favorites, but I'd classify him as a SG more so than a PG. I guess he played a little PG under DK but mostly the 2

Donald Russell was a pretty good PG for Umass. Not the greatest era for umass hoop, but the kid could play

Never saw Eldridge or Smith play, and did see Chaz make way too many boneheaded plays for him to be my number one PG. Edgar was in control, smart, didn't take many bad shots. Chaz could have benefited from both discipline and guidance, IMHO. When in game coaching wasn't there, he would just, to quote the current coach, "rock out" and go all Chaz, sometimes for the good, sometimes, not so much.

Chaz was a great player for sure - but I might even argue DK was a better (or at least just as good) player.

Remember people Pip is not the point guard for this team. So comparing him to chaz, dk, Alex and Edgar is not a really valid comparison.
