Will Matty G still be wearing a team uniform like he is at fantasy camp?

That's my fear: he'll use one mic for both purposes. Hopefully the act gets toned down now that he's at the scorer's table.

But back to the main point, I'm sad to hear this as well. George is a good man.

If memory serves did Cal give him the shaft way back for questioning him on something? Maybe the radio gig???

My memory is a bit foggy but George was holding Cal's feet to the fire about something and wouldn't let it go. I think it was why Mike Williams was suspended. Cal got pretty mad. George was gone soon after.

Pretty much accurate.

It was late in the 1994-95 season when we had a decent shot at making the Final Four, but Mike Williams got into some trouble off the court. Calipari suspended Williams for the rest of the season, and that was potentially a big setback to our chances. Obviously a big story.

As the radio play-by-play man at the time, George also did the coaches radio show, just as Josh Maurer does now. During a show soon after the Williams suspension, George asked Cal if he would comment on why. Cal gave a quick answer and wanted to move on. George pressed him on it one more time. Cal took exception to that, got really upset, and demanded George go to break, immediately. And that went on to be George's last season as play-by-play man.

I totally get why George asked, it was a question that all UM fans wanted answers to. Why suspend your starting 2 guard when we're on the verge of the best season ever? But Cal wanted to stay out of the details, and obviously felt it wasn't George's place to be questioning the head honcho during his own show.

Bummed to hear that George is no longer part of the gameday experience. Can't imagine Matty G doing a better job.....just praying I never here "ONNNNNN YOOOUUURRRRR FEEEEET!" or any other of the lines that never changed in the last 5ish years.

My kids liked Matt G. Im guessing they were more the target audience than the resident umasscurmudgeons.com roster.

It is/was super lame.

It is like having fungus on your shower shoes.... When you win 20 in the show and you and have fungus on your shower shoes you're colorful, until then however, it just means you are a slob....

You sport a 15-15 record and roll out the "not in our house" videos and the Matty G schtick you look stupid as Fordham is kicking your ass.... you bang out a 24 win, A-10 title team and then you can boast a little bit more.......

I would love for "not in our house" to be the rule. It's a matter of pride. You want teams coming into your building knowing they are not going to win. If DK can get that back, that's a good step.

Well that step is a combination of two things:

- Actually beating (almost) every one at Mullins     ; AND
- Having people there NOT disguised as empty seats making lots of noise and being disruptive to the away team

At times having him was a plus. Like when the building was packed and it was a close game. I'm thinking back to the 13/14 season when it felt organic at time having him and his schtick getting into the game with the fans. But at every game is overkill. I hope he still picks his spots to adlib but a toned down version is a welcome development. There is no need to have him there screaming "On Your Feet" and his over the top pregame antics with the him under the spotlight in uniform when there are 2,500 fans in the building. But I have said it before, as much as I wasn't a fan of his role it wasn't personal he was doing his job and he was very good at his job. Regardless if there was one fan or 9,500 fans his energy level was always the same.
