It would be interesting to see a basketball game at BU's new hockey arena named after a football player, a sport no longer played at the school.

They may not be great, but they won't be boring!

He was a great athlete and a compelling individual. Of course, two of his three sports are no longer played at BU, but - sorry Jackie - he is the school's greatest athletic figure, and the naming of the arena was very fitting.

November 18 is on a Friday. Does that mean the athletic department is reading this board (link)? Either way that is great news. They will generate plenty of excitement for this. Nobody will care that the opponent is Hartford.

Love love love that the first game is a Friday night. Hate that it's against Hartford. Is that the best we could do for an opening night game? I understand you need to schedule some "lower-tier" teams on the schedule, but we couldn't come up with anyone better for the big home opener? Let's hope people don't care and we don't lose. That could be a disastrous first game if they do.

You don't want people to care?

I think disasterous is a bit of an exaggeration. Some students could maybe fall of the huge bandwagon that will be generated, but I don't think hardcore fans are going anywhere. This is all about long term, and I believe that win or lose, this team will generate excitement. Play hard, leave it all on the floor, win more than you lose, and the fans will be there.
Retarded artistically. Idiotic in other respects.

I second that. John Calipari's team lost to Lowell in the opener of his second season. That team went on to the NIT, which at the time was a great accomplishment. Lappas, on the other hand, won his first four against the likes of NC State and Oregon, and we know what ensued. I'm not worried about the first game at all. The returning players are learning a new system. (I should say that they're learning a system.) TF is doing a great job of promoting the program and I'm confident he'll have fan support.

Wasn't meant as a knock to Agganis. It's just a little surreal to walk out of a hockey arena past a statue of a a guy in old school football pads. Think Dr J statue at McGuirk.

They do, they're well aware of the goings on around here.

Great. If someone from the athletic department is reading this, send me a pm. I have plenty of good ideas.

I think that this is a great move by the Athletic Department to make it a great night. A new coach, and a new atmosphere at Mullins is going to be absolutely crazy. When I look at the first game I don't see Hartford I see a new beginning, a new era of Umass Basketball. With all the excitement in the area and anticipation of the new season I think we are going to see a great turn out to this game. Coach Ford is doing a very nice job in creating a stir and a buzz around the program that has been lacking over the pass few years.

Bring on the Hawks!!

I can't wait till the start of the season.
Go Umass!!!

Why do they insist on scheduling a turkey every Dec 23rd? Since we're already in prediction mode, here's mine: Attendance 1,500., which includes 62 folks coming up from Holyoke as part of that fabulous Community Daze marketing program.

If they scheduled a great team on Dec 23th people would complain that they schedule the good games when the students aren't here.
