Frank has every right to bitch about the absolute ridiculousness of the current state of college basketball. It’s a fucking joke and the product is being completely ruined by the portal. Maybe if enough big name coaches complain the ncaa will get off their ass and work on a way to fix the transfer portal? Is Danny Hurley a dinosaur too? He was complaining on 60 minutes last night that half his team could enter the portal! Half of his team after winning back to back national championships! I want more complaining so this gets fixed because college basketball pre NIL and transfer portal was way fucking more enjoyable to follow and watch! UMassCollective frank isnt bitching about your work he’s frustrated with the overall state of the game like many of us are. Stop being so goddam sensitive.

I think, at this point, Frank Martin and UMass has become a bad marriage. While I think Frank is a good coach, he is not someone who is comfortable or competent to work the portal. I think there are probably more players who would not play for Frank than those who would. Of course there really is not a viable solution. Bamford, foolishly, gave him a raise and extension last year. While many were pleased with the team last year, the truth is 2 A10 teams made the NCAA ‘s and four VCU, Richmond, Loyola, and St Joes made the NIT and St.Bonaventure turned down an opportunity.
I doubt Frank is happy here but he is not getting a near better opportunity in terms of money anywhere in college basketball. I don’t doubt he could get a job a a lower major team but would never get the money he is getting here. He may decide to go the TV College analyst, where I think he would be great, but I’m not sure he would want it if offered.
I think the next 6 weeks will be very interesting in regards to transfer portals and coaching changes.

See, who said unity wasn’t possible? I’m not sure Quann and I have ever agreed on much of anything, and yet here we are. College hoops currently blows. At this point, perhaps only slightly more enjoyable than MAC football.

I don't know if he's really unhappy. I think there are aspects of his job that are frustrating for sure, but he still seems to enjoy the meat and potatoes of the job which is coaching and teaching. I don't see him going anywhere soon. Also, face it he's a big asset to the athletic department in terms of marketing and visibility. He's still a name. That's going to be even more important now with the transition to the MAC. One good offseason in the portal and this could be turnaround easily.

Ever so slightly...
Quann - I too am on the same page for the most part. Unfortunately however, the NCAA was very foolish in how they went about this. Instead of gradually changing the rules, they created the wild west almost overnight and it is going to be virtually impossible to pull anything back now.
Is Frank a good coach - hard to tell at this point. He has a history (and reputation) for being a lunatic. What kid worth anything is going to sign on to get berated and embarrassed in front of 10's of fans every night. The coaches can bitch all they want, they are not going to cause change - it is simply too late.
They have given children/young (very young) adults all the power; and most are being "advised" by parents who live in the moment with little thought about the actual future. These kids are seeing money they have never had before and they are stary-eyed. Those that are thinking about the future (even a little bit) have gotten agents, but guess what, there are still only a handful of players who are gonna get paid to ball after college so 95% of these kids are little appetizers for these agents.
Unless someone/something outside of the NCAA gets involved and forces it (yup, government), this problem will never go away and will only grow. The nano-second Bakers tries anything that resembles pulling back or limiting something that is already in place the Lawsuits filed will make your head spin.
I ranted yesterday about Frank needing to shut the fuck up and get on board or leave. Unfortunately, we as fans need to follow that same advice.

Hell yeah Joleon. The jab at MAC football gave me a good chuckle, well played sir.

Agreed, but someone with a spine needs to be able to take the onslaught as a leader and start figuring it out. Charlie is definitely not that guy. He crumbled in two seconds once he got a tiny bit of pushback during COVID as governor. He lacks the constitution for fighting, he's just sitting back and collecting that nice fat paycheck as head of the NCAA now.

I am going to assume this is wishful thinking and not any sort of actual scoop or well thought out educated prediction.

You guys need to relax the fire Frank talk. Program needs continuity and stability.

Agree that continuity and stability are key, but am definitely concerned about excess player turnover because of his coaching style. I will concede that a players coach like McCall had just as much turnover.

The program needs someone who has a better understanding of, and willingness to embrace, todays landscape.

There is a better likelihood of Frank stepping down than Frank getting fired, that's for sure

^100%.
If Frank thinks he's too good for the MAC because he coached in the Big12 and SEC and had deep tournament runs, just take a look at John Groce. Similar age, had some nice tournament runs, coached in the Big10 at Illinois, and has been at Akron for 8 years with a ton of success. Lots of wins, conference champs, tournament appearances. That's a pretty good way to play out the next 4 years while making $2mil a year if you ask me.

I just don’t see FM walking away from all of that money.
We won 20 games with him last year we can win the MAC with him next year.
