Whats the deal with no television for the Tip-Off Classic? That game has been on ESPN for as long as I can remember. I'm hoping it just hasn't been announced yet that they are going to broadcast it. I'll be down in Maryland for the holiday and when I heard we would be playing that game I was excited I'd get to spend my Friday night watching some hoops. I sure hope to hell ESPN doeson't decide this match-up isn't attractive enough for them and elects not to broadcast.

With the new wave of outlets (CSTV, ESPNU, Comcast Sportsnet, FSN) all scrambling for quality programming to fill their schedules, the odds of a match-up between two quality teams (especially OOC games where neither team is locked into a conference tv deal) being nationally televised is very strong. You add in that Gonzaga has Morrison, and that UMass seems to be generating a decent amount of pre-season hype, and I stick by what I said that this would have probably found its way onto national television.

Also, and almost more importantly, the loss of a marquee home game, on a home schedule that really needed one is a major blow.

Once again, I do not think this is a HUGE issue. The schedule is fine.... especially for a first year program under a new coach (although why we would ever travel to Savannah St. is beyond me). I just think the trade of games between St. John's and Gonzaga was a bad trade.
CSTV, ESPNU, Comcast? First of all, God forbid it doesn't get on CSTV or ESPNU. I'm sure the twenty people in this country that get those stations will be mortified. And as far as Comcast goes, they only show local games. That wouldn't be a game broadcasts nationally. Now if you're arguing that you can't see the St. Johns tournament whereas you might have been able to watch the Gonzaga game, I would buy that argument. However, as I said before, the fact that we're still going to play Gonzaga next year (more than likely) and the fact that this gives our NY alums a chance to see the team, makes me feel like this was a good move. I'd be happier with an ESPN/ESPN2 game with Gonzaga next year as opposed to a CSTV or ESPNU game this year.

Not to argue, but CSTV, ESPNU, and Comcast Sportsnet are all available nationally on DirecTV.

100 million homes have television. DirecTV has 12.6 million customers. 12.6% of the population can watch a game on those stations. Not very helpful.

Only problem with the arguement is that as stated in the gazette UMass will NOT play Gonzaga in '06 as the schools will be making a financial settlemet. Knowing that, was this still a good trade off?

Depends on who they get to replace Gonzaga next year. In all likelihood, no.

I know it wasn't the last, but you just made me think of that GW game in 97 or 98 when we beat them like 40 and Him Who Drinks Lamb's Blood threw a pampertantrum when Ty came back into the game with under a minute left (all other frontcourt players fouled out I think).

So... thanks.

Plus this year Gonzaga is probably as hot as they are going to get for a while with Morrison on board. Like another poster said, probably not a good trade. But that will not fully be determined till we see the schedule for next year. Who knows maybe we will land an even bigger fish.

We all don't want to get greedy, but ... since you asked ...

The last home win by ...
20 or more ...... St. Francis, 80-58, 11/18/03
25 or more ...... Fordham, 85-59, 2/3/01
30 or more ...... La Salle, 82-48, 2/9/00
35 or more ...... Rhode Island, 89-50, 1/22/00
40 or more ...... Boston University, 90-42, 1/5/93
45 or more ...... Boston University, 90-42, 1/5/93
50 or more ...... Maine, 108-38, 2/23/74

We also had a 49-point win over Keene State (94-45) in 1991 and, more recently, a 50-point win AT Duquesne in 1995. The last time we scored 100 points in Amherst was 2/22/92 vs. St. Bonaventure (104-67).

I partticularly like my point about "rebuilding". In five years, Lappas was unable to return UMass to the level it was at when he was hired. Lappas NEVER needed to "rebuild". He needed to BUILD. His inability to grasp that simple concept along with his inability to coach doomed UMass to irrlevance for five years.

Printable schedule is ready too.
