I've seen a number of recruits cancel their final visit(s) and commit to an earlier visit.

Brown is visiting Miami after Indiana. Look for an extended umasshoops.com shutdown if he ultimately spurns the Canes and commits to UMass.

Should we be concerned he doesn't have an official visit lined up with UMass?

I know he's visited the campus a number of times but I don't get a good feeling from him only having OV's set for UMiami and IU.

3 unofficial visits is probably better than 1 official visit

I think the only difference is who pays for everything. If he's just driving out and staying with his folks at the Campus Center hotel and his parents give him some spending money to hang out with the team, he can have the same or better experience than a kid on an official visit.

Or am I missing something about the distinction between the two types of visits?

No you're essentially correct. OVs to places like Miami and Indiana are necessary because they allow for the schools to pay for everything including travel.

At UMass all he has to do is get in the car and drive a couple hours, maybe, and stay at the Holiday Inn Express or HoJo or wherever.

OVs tend to sound better because the school is paying for it and you only get 5 of them, thus whichever schools you choose to OV are your de facto top choices.

The fact that he's been to UMass 3 times already is a very good sign, and there's nothing stopping him from UVing again too.

I think schools are prohibited from paying for anything on unofficial visits, but are allowed to pay for things like travel, accommodations, food and maybe some other stuff on official visits.

Long story short, I don't think it's not a big deal in this case since Brown is close and especially because he's visited campus several times already.

Part of the equation in official vs unofficial is that each S-A is allowed only 5 official visits. Unless he takes an official to Hawaii, it means there is another team in the mix!
