Let me rephrase - why do they schedule ANYBODY on Dec 23? The students are gone. It's right before Christmas. It's guaranteed to be one of the lowest attended games of the year, every year. Let the players, especially those that have to catch a plane in order to get home, have a few days off for the holidays. They're going to be working most of Intercession as it is.nale wrote: If they scheduled a great team on Dec 23th people would complain that they schedule the good games when the students aren't here.

For some reason, over the last few years we had a habit of scheduling a lot of home games right before Christmas, and in between Christmas and New Year's.
During Calipari's years as coach, the latest we played a home game before Christmas was Dec. 17 (Western Kentucky in 94-95). We also never played a home game between Christmas and New Year's (although we were in the Abdow's Classic four times, but I'm pretty sure those games were not part of the season ticket package).
Under Bruiser, things stayed pretty much the same. The latest home game before Christmas was Dec. 19 (Detroit in 98-99), and only one home game between Christmas and New Year's (Davidson, Dec. 29, 1998).
Under Lappas, we played a home game on Dec. 23 all four years. We also played home games between Christmas and New Year's in three out of the four years.
Hopefully Ford will take the fans into consideration when he schedules games, and won't have so many home games around the holidays.

Plain and simple:
The X-mas holiday shoudn't be viewed any more important than others.
My belief:
Quite simply, if they're on a roll and win then ANY day is a good day for a game!
If, on that date, this team is on a roll then my guess is that over 5000 other fans will think so too.
After the last four years i'm more worried about HOW they play than WHEN they play!

If you're a local and have a nice easy ride to the MC, and they're on a roll, then sure, maybe every day is a good day. If you're a student then 12/23 is not so good. If you're an alumnus who has to get on the Pike, then Friday the 23rd, well, that's about as bad a day as you can pick to get on the Pike. Me, I take rt 2, so I'm just being an argumentative SOB. I will note that Steve managed to get over 4K in with his first 12/23 game, against a crappy Maine team, so I suppose if they're on a roll then it wouldn't be half as bad as most of the home games last season.
Excellent point. There are probably many alums and other fans of UMass basketball that come to the area for the holidays to visit family and friends. Having a home game on the 23rd gives those people, who might not get to Amherst all that often, a chance to see the team play.Roadtrip wrote:Well..ya can't please everyone, thats for sure. As an out of stater with local ties, I like the games around Christmas... some of the few I get to see.
It's a Friday night, two days before the actual holiday.
Like you said, Roadtrip, ya can't please everyone.
