Hell yes. MAXIE!!! Has been my favorite player on the team for a little while - starting to move up the all-time ranks now...Marty Peretz wrote:One other thing: Maxie's steal and dunk is by far the play of the year thus far. Fucking awesome. Professor Thoms erupted. Sounded like the Bill got pretty loud too.
Game 14, 2013-14: Saint Joseph's
MassMan06 - I wasn't responding to anyone in particular (frankly, I just skip over most of the negative stuff after wins). I will say (and have posted) that I am concerned by the lack of intensity of the team over the past month. I figure, though, that the team is 13-1 so DK and his staff and the players probably will figure it out and get their shit together.

Just read through the 25 pages of the board missed the game but read the recap hope to get a viewing of the replay tomorrow
One elephant in the room that has yet to be addressed is the transformation (in a bad way) of samps conditioning from the beginning of the year to now I remember being impressed in how conditioned he was during the first 6 to 7 games of the season he was lean and mean, now his body looks liked it did during the a10 tourney last year
I think he may have gotten a little complacent and has been eating seconds in the caf or had a heavy dose of the holiday eating binge but clearly he has gained weight over the past month
I hope this doesn't across as mean but it's clearly impacting his game, particularly on the offensive end where he isn't even getting off the floor in the paint to score I first noticed it during the PC game in person where he was looking for whistles but in reality he was not getting off the ground and either getting blocked clean by the defense or the rim
The opposite is true of Maxie he has transformed his body significantly I have said this in the past that he has the highest ceiling on the team in terms of professionally ( including Chaz) and his performance this year isn't all that surprising yes he has gotten better this year but I don't think there was a person in the gym last year, particularly at the end of the year, that didn't want him playing over Sampson or TV
In terms of the general negativity on the blog tonight I'll reserve judgement until I see the replay, but I was very concerned with their lack of improvement over the last 3 weeks, moreso on the defensive and intensity end where it looks these guys just aren't having fun Weirder still was the fact that they were only playing once a week, I thought they would have been amped to go beat up somebody other than themselves after 5 days of practice

I don't care whether you include me or not. The only point I am trying to make is you have made 150 or so posts here and you are bitching and moaning about the lack of knowledge of some of the posters here. Not the way to make friends.jdawg 43 wrote:did I say everyone? I'm pretty sure I didn't. I wasn't including you. I agree with this. My big concerns are the stagnant halfcourt offense and the play of Sampson and Cady.UMass87 wrote:MassMan06 - I wasn't responding to anyone in particular (frankly, I just skip over most of the negative stuff after wins). why are you taking something that isn't directed at you (and when I relaxed a little apologized to the guy it was directed at and admitted I was wrong when I saw where he was coming from, and I had been worked up at someone else who did have that lack of knowledge) and making it about you? Yes, I'll calm down but what did I direct at you? I'm pretty sure it was nothing.78 wrote:Obnoxious posters who think they are God's gift to basketball fandom make me angry. There was "only" 4,621 (I thought we had at least 5k in there), but I think it was one of the best crowds this year. Really into the game even when the team didn't seem to be, got loud at the right times and really help this team. I think Josh Brown alone made SJ miss 2-3 FT's with creaming "NO NO NO NO"
Hire Matt McCall!
This was a strange game. I think we played with a lot of intensity in the first half and just couldn't make a shot while St. Joes hit everything. We were lucky to be down only 3. We had spells in the second half where we were pretty lethargic and as others have noted, that 5 point swing (missed rebound on the FT, Kanacevic hitting the 3, the steal and dunk) should have cost us the game.
Chaz and Maxie willed us to the win, but give credit to the other guys on the floor as well for great D in the last 2 minutes.
I have two concerns, and their names are Cady and Sampson. I have no idea what's going on with them, but neither can get off the ground. If only Cady played up to his standards in these last 2 games, we easily win by double figures in each of them. How can he get so outplayed by Kanacevic and whomever from Miami (Ohio) in the last game?
Early in the year, Cady was imposing his will on every center he played. Now he can't even get a rebound or defend the post. Early in the year, Sampson was taking it strong to the hoop and now he can't get it over the rim.
How far we go depends a lot on what we get from Cady. Right now, that makes me extremely nervous.

I've been as concerned as anyone about our drop in play lately but if you can't feel happy about that win and focus on the positive after a game like that, then you've lost all perspective.
13-1 against a top 10 schedule. Our 9th top 100 win, which is the most in the country. An AP ranking of #19. Clutch end of game heroics from some really entertaining players.
Guys, wake up and smell the roses and stop pissing in my champagne.

It's either that, or those people think this team is some lock elite8/final 4 squad and all I can say to that is...hahhahahahahhaha. However, that goes to what you wrote to end that post...xlgman wrote:I've been as concerned as anyone about our drop in play lately but if you can't feel happy about that win and focus on the positive after a game like that, then you've lost all perspective.
Let me clarify my post a bit. I'm thrilled that we won and very pleased that we are 13-1. My concern is that if we keep playing like this we will lose a couple of games that we shouldn't lose and that will put us back to where we were last year.
Eventually, playing this way catches up with you. Look at our neighbors to the south. They won four games early in the year when they didn't play well, including a couple on last second shots. It caught up with them and they dropped 3 games in 2 weeks.
I just don't want this to happen to us. I realize that we're probably not going 29-1, but we have to win every game against the bottom half of the league, especially at home. We could have easily lost this one. I am looking forward to a major thrashing of SBU on Saturday and hoping Cady goes for 22 and 15.

^ OK but why focus on that? You can't take a little more pleasure just hours after the game ended to enjoy the win? I mean, what a finish! What clutch performances by Chaz, Maxie and Trey down the stretch! Put made a nice recovery in the second half on offense, giving us 11 quick points in a short stretch. When was the last time we saw him recover from a tough first half to come out strong in the second? Nice coaching move by DK to pull him out in favor of Maxie once it looked like Put was slipping back. Loved that DK gave Maxie the most minute of any bigs. I mean overall, there's still a lot of good things that happened tonight and your 19th ranked Minutemen won again against a big rival and is now 13-1 and getting more press and more coverage and more TV exposure and more fannies in the seats than we have in a long time.
Not picking on you, just the general negative tone of the board just minutes after a nice, quality win. Hard to understand when we're 13-1 and ranked.

The wife came for the first time since Camby's first game, when we also got a ticket on 202 for speeding. 20 years ago?
Anyway. Lots of fun. And, UMASS has those magical thrusts, perhaps "Mad Minutes" where they just 'take over' - special kudos to Maxie and Chazz. Front line Sampson and LaLanne had bad night.
Hey we are 13-1 against a very tough schedule, and everyone wants us as the win number goes up.
I do think that the team is not moving well without the ball, and tends to look to Chazz to be the 'man' every moment - hence his having only 4 assists - you can't hit them if they are not open.
But, unlike the last few years, we are finding ways to WIN, not lose, and that is very good.
This is a fun team to watch, and they seem to have more depth than most opponents, which wil be helpful as the A10 schedule rolls out.

Feeling entitled is JUST a feeling...
LAST THOUGHT ABOUT LAST NIGHT AND THE CURRENT HOMESTAND......YES THE TEAM HASN'T LOOKED GREAT TO THE EXPECTATIONS WE HAVE FOR THEM. HOWEVER, I REALIZED LAST NIGHT THAT GOOD TEAMS WIN GAMES WHERE THEY PLAY POORLY. THAT IS WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE . THE ASSUMPTION WE HAVE MADE THAT SAMPSON AND CADY WILL CONTINUE TO PLAY POOR;Y IS WRONG. WE WILL WIN SOME GAMES WE SHOULD LOSE AND WILL LOSE A GAME WE SHOULDN'T. BUT NOT SO MANY DUMB LOSSES AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS.
THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE.
