Resurrecting the Sampson thread, for the not good news.
Matty V is reporting that Sampson will not return this season:

He also points out that this will change our scholarship plans, as Samp will redshirt this year and plans to come back in 2013-14.

Matty wrote the following, but it is a little misleading:MikeUMA wrote:Resurrecting the Sampson thread, for the not good news.

This will not effect the scholarship situation for the coming season, as Samp would have been a senior and on the team anyway. It effects the situation for the year after, 2013-2014. We'll have only three schollies to offer for 2013-2014 rather than the the four we were expecting to have. I guess that's what Matty means about losing a scholarship to offer next year. That is, we offer them next year (2012-2013) for the year after.Redshirting Carter means UMass will have one fewer scholarship to offer next year as he'll join Raphiael Putney and Chaz Williams in the class of 2014.
That said, losing Samp this year is a big deal. He was playing really well and had the numbers to prove it. We will miss him. Discuss: I think he was turning out to be the best of Kellogg's five initial recruits.
"All credit to my teammates, all glory to God."-- Chaz Williams
Hope he gets healthy and comes back better than ever. I agree Len....Samp has a subtle game, but was starting to contribute all over the place. Love that he'll have 2 years left when gets back healthy.
Not a horrible thing, program/scholly wise.....we would have lost 4 guys at once who get reasonable minutes (at least reasonable first half minutes
)....not a bad thing to space it out a little better.
edit: scratch that.....forgot about Morgan.....we'll still lose 4 guys at once.....

I think this is a big blow to the team. Sampson is arguably the most versatile player on the team and he's a real competitor who makes tough nosed plays. He also has a knack for getting to the line and making his FT. I think he could have made a difference in the Miami game where it was physical and a lot of fouls were getting called.
I suppose it gives us a chance to be better two years from now but it's only going to hurt us this year and I'm already tired of "waiting until next year".
Bummer - get well Sampson!

This is the most enjoyable losing season ever!
