UMass transfer portal news - 2024
Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024
If we're stuck playing the game, that's a damn good way to do it.
And who knows, maybe one of us will hit the powerball or mega millions and we'll be able to give them the bag next year.

They're playing MACsketball. We love that MACsketball.

Guy like Majok is good for scholarship 13, for sure. Just hoping he can continue to improve. He's less likely to leave now but we have some big gaps to fill and he's not ready yet, of course. Good teammate and fan favorite.69MG wrote: Thu Apr 18, 2024 5:32 pm Niles, glad to say I agree with you on the 3 most likely transfers. Worthy never seemed comfortable, Foster hardly played and Majok is a long term project. Of the 3, I felt less likely that Majok would transfer unless he went down a couple of levels. I kind of hope he stays because if he ever figures it out he would give us something we have never seen. But that's a long shot.
Frank is on the prowl right now.

Maybe the following would work...
E. Gray, M. Edwards
or
TJ Power, R Ducharme
something like that would be cool.
I kinda like Ajogbor but the Yale center would be coolio...

I kind of feel the same about Worthy that I did for Keon after year 1. Not quite the same player, but I think both are tough kids who struggled a bit freshman year figuring it out. I'm betting Marqui takes a big step further next year, he appeared to be overthinking things last year and got lost in the game. Good size, strong kid, decent handle and can get to the hoop. A good off-season, relax and just play and not overthink, and I think he can be a productive player here. I'm a Worthy fan
My wish list; TJ Power comes back home and Cross comes back, and Frank gets another big one to come for the ride

I would love it, but I doubt we get TJ Power. I think Reid Ducharme and AJ Braun are much more likely.

Are there any local reporters who do a good job covering UMass recruiting these days? Since Matt V moved to Masslive I don’t see anything about who is on visits to UMass for hoops or football. Milt Cole and Matt were always communicating visits back in the day.

Nope, there is pretty much no coverage in WMass these days, let alone coverage for the Flagship.

Another 2 "off-the-wall" potential prospects. Just speculating as I have no idea if we have contacted them. They both entered the portal today.
Sean Stewart, freshman - Duke (6'9, 225). He's from FL and played at Monteverde. Only got 8 minutes a game and maybe looking for PT. Here is some info from his Duke Bio:
Wesley Cardet, Jr., junior (6'6, 204). Plays for Chicago State, the only D1 independent BB team. Also from FL. He has entered his name in the NBA draft, but I doubt he gets drafted.
PTS 18.7
REB 4.5
AST 2.6
FG% 44.4
Shot 34% from 3
They played a good schedule, and he dropped 30 on Northwestern, 28 on Valpo, 18 on DePaul and 19 on K State. His worst game of the year was agains Duq. where he was 2/14 for 5 points. I won't hold that against him.
Again, I'm just having fun looking at guys who recently became available. Maybe we get lucky and reel one in.

Named a McDonald’s All-American, scoring six points for Team East while also grabbing a game-high eight rebounds
I realize we probably have zero chance, but maybe Frank can do a Jedi mind trick on him.Holds the program record for standing vertical at 36 inches, breaking the previous mark -- 35.5 inches -- held by Zion Williamson

Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024
A Full Ride scholarship is a huge value, no doubt. But I'd be unhappy with a law or industry regulation that prevented me from being paid a fair market rate. Especially if that regulation was governed by people I had no direct influence over (ie. the NCAA is not a player's union).Floyd wrote: Wed Apr 17, 2024 8:20 amIs is it free labor if the value of the free ride and all the perks are worth 50, 60, 70+K per year? Think of a kid getting out of school and their first job pays that. Corporations make big money off their employees, should they have to share the profits with all the employees? I get it, everyone wants a cut of the profits, but the value of what they get in a free education and all the rest of it is hardly getting nothing. I know lots of people who would love an opportunity like that

Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024
^ understandable. I just think sports is a different animal than everyday corporate business. Somehow to keep things competitive and people interested there's got to be some sort of way to level the playing field, thus some regulation. Fair market value is different in different markets, so the haves will generally always outperform the have nots, decreasing competitiveness in my eyes. Then people lose interest. Not saying athletes don't deserve anything , but there's quite a bit of value in a free education to set yourself up for life after the playing career is over, coupled with some sort of compensation from income generated by the NCAA. I just can't see how having no structure to compensation is good for sports in general.

A possible transfer to keep an eye on is 7’1” former Duke Center Christian Reeves from Charlotte, NC. He took an official visit to South Carolina with FM when he was in high school.
He received limited playing time at Duke and had a foot injury this season. 3 Years of eligibility remaining.
