I call bullshit. I'm pretty sure players are "run off" quite regularly at most D1 schools. The man has been here for 4 years, UMass would hardly be leaving him high and dry and it wouldn't even register on the map of donors.

You are missing the fact that he is injured. No D1 school worth its salt runs off injured players. It's somewhat of an unwritten rule that injuries don't get your scholarship taken away. Look at how many schools provide for kids who have career ending injuries. Yes. There re times when things don't work out for recruits, and schools do what they can to help kids move on. Running kids off is usually only done when coaching changes occur, or something nefarious but not proven occurs.

Niles - You have been too close to the edge fora couple of weeks! Back away slowly.

I don't know how old you are, but support was lost when Lappas ran off a perfectly health kid, never
mind a kid who is injured. I hope becoming a AD is not on your bucket list.

I'll say it again, Coleman has been here for 4 fucking years, enough time to get his degree. I would love to see UMass continue to support Coleman however they can, short of providing him one of the 13 scholarships the team has to use. Forcing players out, for a variety of reasons, is commonplace in D1 men's basketball.

According to my daughter who has a degree in Sport Management from Ithaca College in NY when a player is given a scholarship it actually is a one year scholarship that is renewable for the four years that you are in school. A coach can choose NOT to renew your scholarship, however it givers the school a bad rep if a lot of players loose their scholarships.

Over recruiting is definitely done. There is a bit more of a pecking order in D1 hoops where major conferences can get away with it more and then kids transfer to mid majors like the A10. But, it does happen even at UMass. That is how Dyson was sent packing. The article you linked to indicates how it is not seen as a good thing though, and while we need players, we also need to keep a good reputation. When it is done at the lower levels for injury related events the way Beilin did it, it is looked upon much differently than how he is perceived as helping a kid who is no longer able to play at the Big 10 level still play at a mid major.

^ I think we have a Michigan/UMass fan here that can verify, but as I recall, no one thought anything of what Beilein did until he told Albrecht that he couldn't transfer out to another Big 10 school.

Right that’s because it is the Big Ten. The restrictions are a problem usually only when it is an injury situation. Healthy guys that are recruited over tend to have restrictions on moving out of conference.

The major basketball conferences and big time players in the Mid majors like UConn (used to be), Gonzaga etc. have always had a different standard when it comes to over recruiting. You said that people didn’t have a problem with Beilein until the Albrecht restrictions. You previously equated that UMass should over recruit and kick Coleman to the curb. If Albrecht hadn’t been injured, the restriction wouldn’t have been needed, because he most likely was transferring because he was not “Big Ten material”. Beilein doesn’t want to face him in conference in case he heals up. Many non-injured players get restricted from going to rivals/conference mates. You’re generalizing from one specific instance and using Beilein as the measuring stick, which doesn’t add up.

^ You don't have a 9k seat arena and $20M practice facility to support a mediocre mid-major program, UMass should not be acting like a mid-major. Coleman isn't being kicked to the curb one year into his college career after an injury, UMass has kept him on scholarship for 4 years. It's time for him to stop counting towards the 13 scholarship limit.

I think what Beilein did was fucked up only because he tried blocking Albrecht from certain schools. First of all, I don't think there should be ANY restrictions on where players can transfer to and it makes even less sense if the coach is forcing the player out on top of it.

You're opinion of where Umass is or should be is not fact. Dayton has a bigger arena and has invested in practice facilities to an almost equal degree. Dayton is still a mid major. The fact is the major conferences (P5 in football) get to play by different rules.

We've had almost 3 argumentative pages on Zach's future. I think that's enough. Let's just chill and see how it plays out. A bad year in BB seems to bring out the worst in a lot of us.

No, Dayton is definitely not a mid-major and neither is VCU. The Big East, AAC and A10 conferences are a step above mid-majors. You could easily make the case that some schools within the A10 have budgets and/or facilities at a mid-major level (i.e. Davidson, Fordham, La Salle, St. Bona etc), but UMass is not one of those.

Yup Michigan basically wanted to move forward but just allowed him to transfer wherever, they put 0 restrictions. So he ended up at Purdue. The same thing is going to happen with Mark Donnal this year and it's discussed by many people who cover the Michigan team. I'd be shocked if Coleman is back. He could just be done with bball all together. Life in NCAA D1 hoops. Happens everywhere.

Shit look at the way they have treated Seth last 2 years. He gets pulled after any little mistake. Some games he plays 15 mins some he plays 5. Freshman play over him. Last years team sucked and he was still never given the full chance. You think he feels part of the plan here? Writing gets put on the wall by the coaching staff. Maybe he will stay too and I think he's a great kid, but this stuff happens.
