Pat Kelsey
Re: Pat Kelsey
“We never received a letter of resignation,” Halpin said. “So his contract has not changed. He and I never even discussed it."

This story just gets weirder and weirder. How did Kelsey and the Winthrop AD never discuss his resignation? The guy announced publicly on Tuesday that he was taking the UMass job and signed a MOU and didn't back out until Thursday. So in all of that time he never spoke to the Winthrop AD about resigning? I can't believe anything Kelsey or anyone connected to him is saying right now.

Re: Pat Kelsey
Winthrop does not have the internet yet. Their AD seems to be playing Bamford for a fool.
Re: Pat Kelsey
I do not believe for one second that he didn't resign. They are obviously trying to get out of the buy out. In my head I see Halpin with a zippo, "letter what letter?"
Time to let the lawyers fight it out and Folkens is already litigating it in the press it seems.

Re: Pat Kelsey
Thats what I was getting at, I think Winthrop is concerned about the buyout being enforced. It is all forked tongue bs right now.
Looking forward to winning seasons again!

Re: Pat Kelsey
The resignation thing is strange. Strange that the Winthrop AD hadn't interviewed Prosser or anyone else yet too. Fell for Prosser, I wonder what his father would think of this whole thing from a kid ( yes a 41 year old kid, grown men don't act this way) who considered him a mentor??
Hire Matt McCall!
Re: Pat Kelsey
The conversation may have gone something like this:
Wednesday:
PK: I've taken the Head Coaching job at UMass.
Winthrop AD: Good luck to you.
Friday:
PK: Can I have my old job back?
Winthrop AD: Well we never received your resignation letter, so I guess you never really left...wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
See? He didn't resign.

Re: Pat Kelsey
I'm ready to move on, but I have to say, this whole thing reflects very poorly on Kelsey and is a very bad PR move for him. The whole thing puzzles me - not so much by what he did, but how he did it. A lot of these problems could have been avoided if he had made the decision at the appropriate time (cancel signing the MOU). Instead, he chose sign what amounts to a contract and then embarrass himself and everyone else involved by putting on an elaborate show, and then cutting out 20 minutes before a well publicized press conference. To me, that just doesn't seem normal. At the very least, it shows a lack of judgement and foresight. And if that's the case, it might be for the best that he won't be the one leading the program.
Re: Pat Kelsey
Wonder if/when he's going to actually face the music on this instead of shooting texts to a reporter from a friendly newspaper.
Re: Pat Kelsey
...Also, if by some chance this a calculated move to position himself for as Xavier's next head coach, it wouldn't surprise me if this move backfires. I might be overestimating how bad the optics look, but I think it's possible that Xavier won't want to be involved in this story, even if at some point he was their top choice for a replacement.DEM wrote:I'm ready to move on, but I have to say, this whole thing reflects very poorly on Kelsey and is a very bad PR move for him. Re: Pat Kelsey
From my point of view:
Bamford did the right thing and fired DK (though I really wished it had worked out for him but in reality he needed to go).
Bamford conducted a good search without a lot of media hoopla.
Bamford picked a good coach for UMASS and the future looked bright. His choice was universally praised.
Kelsey acts like a jerk and resigns. Glad he resigned then rather than 3 months form now. Good riddance.
Bamford handled the resignation with class and dignity which reflects well on UMASS.
Kelsey is a forgotten memory for me. He is nothing more than a minor footnote in the record books. My guess is he will have another future event that will reflect bad on his character.
UMASS moves on and will hire a coach.
End of story. No more nashing of teeth. His resignation is all about him and not UMASS.
Moved on.

Re: Pat Kelsey
In hindsight, there are two things that I wish Bamford had done differently.
1. I wish Bamford had waited until Kelsey & his family had visited UMass before making an agreement/MOU and announcing anything.
2. I wish Bamford had been able to see Kelsey for the fraud he is. I think this is something the vetting process maybe should've helped to identify.

#2 is BS. I won't even address that.NilesGold wrote:In hindsight, there are two things that I wish Bamford had done differently.

#1 - I have no idea how common it is for a coach to see the campus/facilities before being offered the job. Furthermore, we don't know why he left. What I do feel pretty confident saying is that Bamford wouldn't parade every candidate around campus like he did with Kelsey once he agreed to become coach, and I'm guessing it was at some point during that process that he realized he didn't want to be here.

If Zag is correct we can put the Mack to IU rumor to bed (and Kelsey to X). He says it's Alford now that UCLA is out.
